      Heute ging es nach Mansillas de las Mulas. Der Weg führte größtenteils an der Straße entlang.
      Was natürlich eher eintönig ist . Die Stadt selbst hat auch nicht wirklich viel zu bieten.
      Aber die Landschaft ja was soll ich sagen einfach wunderschön. Später gibt es noch etwas zu essen und dann Schlafen. Morgen geht's nach Leon das wird etwas ganz anderes. Bin gespannt wie es weitergeht.Les mer

      Our Time as Hospitaleros

      We have volunteered to run the hostel for 15 days. The volunteers before us, a couple from Malaga, after a quick run through of the registration and cleaning process took off to Madrid before opening time at 1pm, leaving us to face the milling crowd waiting in the cold outside. Rookie mistake- letting everyone in at once leads to crowded stairs and confusion when counting heads and beds. Result: we checked in 33 for only 32 beds!
      Australian woman came to me - “There’s a man sleeping in my bed”. The Australian couple were great, happy to top and tail. So now 10 at a time inside at once, unless it’s raining of course. We are full, completo, most nights and have had to turn people away.      Les mer

      Domenico Laffi Hostel is run by the local council of El Burgo Ranero. We have volunteered to manage the hostel for two weeks. As we stepped off the train from Leon the skies opened with a cascade of hail and rain! A fine welcome!Les mer

      Addendum - dinner tonight

      Just have to add our dinner…there were the 4 of us, and Phil from Washington DC who is also staying here…our hosts made this wonderful paella just for us, as otherwise they were closed…started with salad, then the paella, then a chocolate cake thing, then camomile (me), coffee or whatever, and of course vino tinto and agua…such fun and just have to add the pics…the paella had prawns, clams, crab, scallops, mussels and was just amazing…Les mer

      Von Sahagún nach el burgo de ranero.

      Buenas a todas. So langsam neigt sich die fast endlose meseta dem Ende zu und der Weg nach León ist nicht mehr weit. Heute war der Weg nach el burgo de ranero angesagt und ich muss sagen, dass dieser keine großen optische Reize zu bieten hatte. Nach exakt 3 Wochen Pilgern, muss man feststellen, dass dieser Weg so einiges bei einem bewirkt. Man geht in sich und denkt sehr viel nach, vor allem, wenn der Weg wenig optische Anreize bietet. Über el burgo de ranero bleibt nur zu sagen, tote Hose 😂😂. Ein pueblo wie im Buche. Nun gut, der camino bietet immer Überraschungen. Eines ist fast immer gleich, Vormittags rennt mann seinem Schatten hinterher und Nachmittags wird man von ihm verfolgt. So ist das, wenn man auf dem camino von Osten nach Westen wandert. Erkenntnis des Tages: Seinen Schatten wird man nie los. Adios y buenas noches.Les mer

      Rest day in Leon

      Yesterday we walked 24 klms along the old Roman road instead of along the highway from Sahagún to Mansilla de los Mulas.
      If you know yer Román roads then you know they are made up of layers and layers of rocks. So it made for a bumpy and slow walk. We had to stop a few times when there was shade (hardly any on the way) and give the feet an airing, it helps to prevent blisters forming. Take boots and both sets of socks off.
      We decided to bus 🚍 the last few clicks into León as we knew it was just car dealerships and factories for another 18klms ,no guilt felt whatsoever. There are pilgrims who walk every single kilometre and feel like they have cheated if they don't, that's their choice, I chose the bus and we booked a hotel for a rest day. The bliss of real sheets a double bed, towels and our own shower.🚿
      León seems like a nice city, it has a nice vibe. Today after a nights sleep we are chilling with a late breakfast, watching the people go by and not planning on doing too much except pottering.
      We have now walked 461 k's which I can hardly believe so we are over the halfway stage, we plan to walk to finisterre(the ocean) which is another 100 so that will be 900 if we can do it all. That's like walking to Sydney from Brisbane, wow. 😲
      Things I've noticed are
      Spanish don't do tea, no kettle and teabags in hotels and hardly a kettle anywhere to be found. I miss tea! 🥤
      They eat a Lot of bread, I love bread but I am getting a bit fed up of it. 🥪
      Europeans in general smoke a lot. 🚭
      Older guys go to the local bar for a few drinks and play cards or dominoes with their friends in the afternoon, I thought that seemed like a nice thing. 🍻
      Spanish ladies can be feisty. 🔥
      Spanish ladies dress beautifully on the whole, lovely shoes and outfits. I have often felt a bit underdressed in my Pilgrim attire that I wear everyday.
      Some days I have even had to commit fashion crime and wear socks with sandals to protect my sore blistered feet. 👡
      Yes you can walk on blisters!
      It's amazing how little you actually need to live.
      I have 2 outfits and 2 sets of socks to wear.
      1pr sandals 1 pr boots. 👢
      My whole pack weighs less than 6 kilos now as I've gotten rid of useless items like a swimming costume, evening top and things I've forgotten about.
      Happiness doesn't require stuff 🧐

      El Burgo Ranero

      Dzisiaj zajęło nam dużo czasu aby opuścić Sahagun. Miejsce, w którym spaliśmy było doskonałe, z bardzo dobrym obiadem i śniadaniem
      Pierwsze nasze kroki skierowaliśmy w stronę biura pielgrzymów, aby uzyskać certyfikat ukończenia połowy drogi. Mieściło się ono prawie na końcu miasta w odrestaurowanym od paru lat Santuario de la Virgin Peregrina. Po odebraniu zacnych dokumentów zwiedziliśmy Sanktuarium, które na chwilę obecną jest muzeum. Dobrze wyeksponowane resztki fresków na ścianach jak również delikatne koronkowe ozdoby pomaurowskie. Duża kolekcja figur Sw. Marii z artystycznie oddanym pięknem osobistym i emocjami twarzy. Figury te, dodatkowo pięknie ustrojone bogato zdobionymi szatami, w okresie Wielkiego Tygodnia, są wynoszone na specjalnych do tego celu pojazdach i uczestniczą w świątecznych procesjach. Już stojąc w sanktuarium robią niesamowite wrażenie.
      Nazwa miasta Sahagun jest skróconą wersją imienia Świętego Fakunda męczennika, który wraz z bliskim sobie Świętym Primitivo, zginęli śmiercią męczeńską za odmowę oddawania czci bożkom, wlasnie tutaj w Sahagun. Byli oni długo ale bezskutecznie torturowani przez Rzymian a potem ścięto im głowy i z szyi popłynęła krew i woda a działo się to w 3 wieku.W miejscu ich stracenia powstał klasztor Benedyktynów. I tam właśnie spędziliśmy trochę kolejnego czasu w przy klasztornym muzeum. Początek Benedyktynów w tych rejonach wiąże się właściwie z obecnością hiszpańskich Cluneys, którzy przez parę setek lat przeżywali świetność dzięki królowi Alfonsowi VI, który bardzo o nich dbał nadając im wiele licznych przywileji. Grobowiec króla i kilku jego żona właśnie tutaj się też znajduje.
      Muzeum ma również wiele ciekawych rekwizytów, ale głównie z XVI-XVII wieku. Najfajniejsze było wyjście malutkimi ciasnymi drzwiami do kaplicy/kościoła Monestario de Santa Cruz zaraz przy przepełnionym przepychem barokowym ołtarzu, który jak tsunami wciągał do środka....
      Po opuszczeniu Sahagun już tylko droga z mijającymi polami kukurydzy, słoneczników i zaoranej ziemi.
      Po drodze mijaliśmy uśpione bezludne miasteczka i w końcu dotarliśmy do naszego schroniska na dzisiaj. Popijamy piwko i inne napoje oczekując na obiad i potem pewnie nic się już nie wydarzy... oprócz pięknego zachodu słońca.      Les mer

      Day 22

      Well.. today I set off intending to be better prepared for the rain than I was yesterday.. I literally didn’t sleep ( nothing to do with having THE most uncomfortable bed ever ) trying to decide what would be the best thing to wear… we’re talking waterproof or not, not some glamorous going out outfit 🙄😬
      Anyway, after being caught short and ending up soaked before I’d managed to even get my coat on yesterday, I set off wearing everything, hoping I wouldn’t end up sweating (lovely 😳😬 ) underneath before the rain set in….
      It was a very poor breakfast, so I left it and decided to get going.. fortunately it was way colder than yesterday and I ended up perfectly dressed 👍🏼👍🏼
      Again, it was more of a head down and just get there day today, so not too many pictures as my phone was buried under my layers..
      On my arrival, I checked out where I was staying, before going back to the pension for a coffee and some toast ( my new found appetite was calling 😳 )
      Whilst eating I meet Eave ( from Denmark ) as you do!!! and was subsequently joined by Rocky.. he’s given me the trail name Hummingbird.. he’s done all of the major American trails, has so many stories, lived an extraordinary life and someone I’m proud to now consider a friend.. I’ve told him I’ll get a hummingbird charm that will always be a reminder of my Camino 🥰
      The rain and thunder were constant this afternoon and so showered and washing done I started reading and sleeping.. I’m such a lightweight 😬
      I had been intending to catch with Rocky, Doc and Bianca for a few Rhummy??!? games, but didn’t want to get soaked to do so..
      No beer today ( it was definitely a coffee day ) I set off 25 minutes early for dinner thinking I’d have one whilst waiting…. I just wanted an excuse to be there early enough to make sure I got a table 😂
      Whilst I didn’t catch up with “ the crew “ I did end up eating with a couple I’d stayed at the same places as a few times earlier in the trip .. ended up having a fabulous evening and we were joined by older American couple who’d been touring ( on foot ) Croatia/Bosnia and somewhere else before joining the Camino in Pamplona..they were on a tight schedule as they were really close to their visas running out 🙄
      So looking forward to sleeping tonight on a more comfortable bed without worrying about “what to wear” 🙄🙄

      Etappe 17 - Villarente

      Super geschlafen, gut ausgeruht gegen 8.00 Uhr gestartet. Erst noch schnell im Café ein kleines Frühstück.
      Bloß gut, denn die nächste Bar war wieder 2, 5 Wegstunden entfernt.
      Die Etappe war erneut sehr unspektakulär und eintönig.
      Bin jetzt am Rio Torio angekommen und habe ein Zimmer in einem kleinen Hotel gefunden. Morgen habe ich dann noch ca. 2 Std. nach Leon. Übernachtungen für die kommenden Tage vorgebucht.
      Saß jetzt mehr als eine Stunde am Flussufer. Entspannung pur!!! Das Wasser ist ganz klar und noch schön angewärmt. Da ist die Lust groß einzutauchen.
      An dieser Stelle danke ich meinen Freunden einmal. Susanne und Matthias haben mich top über die letzten beiden Jahre auf den Camino vorbereitet. Alle in Dresden gekauften Sachen für den Camino haben sich hervorragend bewährt. Ebenfalls danke an Karin und Peter. Ihre erweiterten Tipps auf dem Camino haben mir manchmal weitergeholfen und das Shirt trägt sich super.
      Fazit des Tages: gute Freunde sind durch nichts zu ersetzen. Sie stehen dir jederzeit bei und lassen sich nicht beirren. Dankeschön.      Les mer
