      Etappe Najera nach Granon

      August 14 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

A moment in the sun.

Day 12 - Azofra to Granon

      June 2 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

I've had a bit of a blah day today... my body is feeling it, and old injuries are flaring up.... but you just keep going right! 1 foot in front of the other, 1 step at a time!

The clouds were filling up the sky with their full 50 shades of grey today, not helping my mood! I even got my poncho out for the first time when it started spitting! But thankfully, that's all it did.

Today, I had to really remove myself from the pressure of the fast walkers ... that competitive side of me that wants to hurry along with them... but why?! That's where my work was today.... unravelling this pattern, slowing down & doing the pace that was best for ME!

In fact, 4kms from the end today, Karen suggested that I lay down on a bench, so I took her advice and I rested! I actually drifted off for 10 minutes! I'm getting the hang of this siesta thing! 😴

I took what will maybe become my fave camino photo today, I was quite proud of my creativity! It's probably been done before, but heh, whatever! I proudly shared the idea with other pilgrims! 😝

Finally, I had a decent meal today, too! I must admit the food selection has been quite dismal, but today I had a yummy risotto for lunch, and a big garden salad for dinner! 😋... and of course, lots of patatas frittas! (Chippies)

      8. DAY | 23 km

      May 6, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

      Elli

Day 6: Najera to Granon. 28.5 km

      September 6 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Another long day to follow up the two previous 28 km days. Our bodies are just holding up. We’re stiff and sore at days end; I’ve got a throbbing right knee from past patella tendon issues that I’m nursing and the blister by my left big toe is finally healing. No discomfort there, which is great.

The scenery remains pretty static - vineyards, fields of sunflowers, plowed fields and small villages, with the church at centre on hills. These villages can be a grunt to get to - especially after walking in heat for 6+ hours.

What’s not changing are the pilgrims on the trail. There are alot of them. We wake up and think who’s bumping into us, what discussions will be had, on today’s 25+ km walk…

Up there today was the American, apple pie mom living in a 7 member blended family in Cincinnati. Let’s call her Kate. Kate’s first husband became paranoid, controlling and threatening towards during their separation. It gets ugly for Kate. He began telling his workmate that he wanted to be rid of his ex-wife. The workmate detects something strange is going on, becomes concerned and secretly informed the authorities.

What next happens is that he the FBI do surveillance on her ex. They become really concerned. They ask the workmate to tell her ex that he knows someone to do the job and can arrange a meeting. The meeting goes ahead with an FBI undercover agent, her ex explains on camera that he wants his wife disposed of and hands over $8000. The FBI swoop and long and short is that he gets 10 years for aiding and abetting an attempted homicide. Kate reckons the whole process took three years off her life. She recalls the FBI swooping on her after school pick up and informing her of what’s happened with her ex.

Kate then takes over the care of her three daughters, meets a new man who has four boys and she gives up her marketing work to be a full time regular American mom, coaching volleyball and doing pick up etc. This is how she presents today

She now looks back and says that she thought she was more to him than the $8000 offered!

Camino Moment: During today’s walk I got an email from our albergue to say they’ve overbooked. They’ve given us a welcome upgrade to an apartment: outdoor pool, clean sheets, real towels, washing machine etc. No two person cupboards with shower tonight! After a week on Camino, we need this lift.

Day 12 - Grañón to Villafranca Monte de

      May 27, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 11 °C

      At a glance:
Cultural highlight: stayed in a pilgrims tradition hospital San Anton Abad
Food highlights: chicken in orange sauce
      Kilometres walked: a measly 12k
      # of steps: 15,596
      Elevation gain: 213m
We need to skip the equivalent of 3 stages (days) in order to get to Lyon where they have train services. So we are skipping 12 kilometers today by taking a bus then walking. That is, if we can find the bus stop and if the bar tender read the schedule correctly.
Ricardo left behind an ear bud which I passed on to a fellow Italian pilgrim who knew Ricardo. Unfortunately, this evening we ran into Ricardo, and his name is not Ricardo, it is Lorenzo! I should have kept the ear bud as Lorenzo hasn't seen his fellow pilgrim who has his $200 earbud.
We sat next to two men at dinner and when one mentioned BC Liquor stores, we chatted with them. They grew up in Victoria, one, Steve, ended up in Abbotsford and Mike in London but kept in touch with each other and when they retired they decided to do the Camino together.

      Granon

      September 5, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C

Kury natychmiast ożyły, dostały piór i odleciały głośno hałasując.
Do czasu az zamówiliśmy pyszne Tinto de Verano w barze naszego miejsca spoczynku dzisiejszej nocy.

      Belorado

      September 20, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 75 °F

Today's walk (14-ish miles) involved a couple more small towns, always centered around a church, with a restaurant/bar conveniently located across the plaza from it. The churches pictured today include one in the town where Santo Domingo was baptized. (He's a big deal because after being rejected by the Benedictines twice, he went on to build infrastructure in service to pilgrims.) The same baptismal font is still used today. The other church, with a similarly ornate altar, is here in Belorado, where one can leave a written prayer intention, as MB did.

Lots of fields (with more sad sunflowers) straddling a highway today, with a very windy stretch at the end. Also crossed over from La Rioja into Castilla y Leon.

We may have to stop taking pics of churches as they are all starting to look alike. But we are definitely taking pics of the better casas and rooms where we stay. Tonight's is so charming and pretty. Unless there is a fireworks show right outside our hotel after we turn in, as happened last night, we should sleep well. I'm beat.

BTW, Google Translate (and Google Lens, for menus) are excellent companions, as fewer people speak English in the towns we are now walking through.

      Santo Domingo to Belorado

      September 30, 2023 in Spain ⋅ 🌙 14 °C

After all the fun and food yesterday we were slow to roll out and didn’t start walking until 7:00. Which meant an extra hour at the end walking along unshaded roads under a hot sun. But! The morning started so beautifully, with that giant full moon hanging in the sky ahead of us in the dark, and then a deep orange sunrise building behind us. The mornings have been magical!

After days walking through the Rioja Region we left it today - that’s what the tall marker in the photo indicates. No big change yet in scenery. The walk was not too eventful, just eventually very hot! It did take us through the birthplace of St. Domingo. And also it was fun to encounter a pharmaceutical vending machine, loaded with all sorts of things often needed by foot weary pilgrims.

Everyone on the path was buzzing about the albergue with the - gasp! - swimming pool!! Which is where I am now, and I will say, soaking my feet in that very cold pool felt very good. We also carbo-loaded at the pilgrim dinner, so I’m ready for a good walk tomorrow, hopefully with a 6:00 AM start.

      Day 13 Granon to Tosantos

      October 3, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 57 °F

Today was much cooler, with a cloud cover most of the day. We have left the Rioja region and crossed into Castilla and Leon. This area has acres and acres of sunflowers. We missed them in bloom though. We walked through numerous small villages and had lunch in Belorado. We had delicious salads with prawns, salmon and avocado. We met up with "the last patrol", our veteran guardian angels again. We also had a nice family style/home cooked meal at our Albergue Los Arancones and met up with our French friend Jackie. The albergue was Les than half full.Read more
