      feelin the heat en route to Belorado!

      Grañón - Residencial El Cuartel

      Another good day weather wise. A few sprinkles that never turned into rain. We stopped by the road and met a man with a blue unicorn who gifted it to Mia. We stopped in Santo Domingo de la Calzada for a delicious lunch at the Wanderlust Restaurant that I'd heard about. We pushed on to Grañón and settled into the Spanish version of the Bates Motel. We walked into town and found a tasty dinner so all is well.

      Otro buen día en Camino con el clima. Algunas chispas que nunca se convirtieron en lluvia. Nos detuvimos en el camino y nos encontramos con un hombre con un unicornio azul que se lo regaló a Mia. Nos detuvimos en Santo Domingo de la Calzada para un delicioso almuerzo en el restaurante Wanderlust. Continuamos hacia Grañón y nos instalamos en la versión española del Motel Bates. Entramos a la ciudad y encontramos una sabrosa cena, así que todo está bien.      Read more

      Grañon, die grosse Herbergsfamilie

      Bin dann also mit Ruven in Grañon und der Herberge abgekommen…
      Da war es etwas interessant… die Herberge war Teil der Kirche vor Ort. grundsätzlich wurden wie sehe herzlich begrüsst, gleichzeitig war es etwas chaotisch… manchmal erhielten wir infos, dann redete sie wieder mit jemand anderen und dann wieder mit uns… weiss nicht ob ich am Schluss alle Infos mitbekommen habe… jedenfalls war es ein Erlebnis… das Abendessen wurde gemeinsam gekocht, Schlafen taten wir auf Matten auf dem Boden, Abwasch fand am Tisch mit einer Waschstrasse gemeinsam statt, gemeinsames Rapsingen und dann nach dem Essen gemeinsamer Abschluss des Tages mit Andacht… eine grosse Pilgerfamilie eben… ein ruhiger und lebendiger Ort zugleich… war sehr spannend diese verschiedenen Energien mitzuerleben…

      Hier treffe ich auch wieder auf Sabine die tolle aus Deutschland… ich kenn sie cshon vom Vorabend… mit ihr ist es immer lustig und lehrreich!      Read more

      Camino Conversion

      I'm a convert but not the kind you might be thinking off. I went from walking pilgrim to cycling pilgrim.
      Took the bus down to Logrono, the bike was all set up by Eugenio, and we added two bags and I was out the door in less than half an hour. It feels great to be back on the road again. I feel bad about not being a walking pilgrim. However the intention of the pilgrimage remains the same. The Camino has its reasons. Upon coming through Santo Domingo I met a group of cyclists who waved me to join them. They are from Chile and I'll look to ride with them tomorrow.Read more

      Day 12

      Granon to Atapuerca

      I got 9 hours of sleep. Even rode up the steep hills. Riding is so different from walking. It's not the same experience on the Camino, but it's the experience I can get and it's sure better than taking the bus.

      I meet the 80 year old lady from Maui again. She is the light of the Camino, she radiates and glows of happiness.

      I run into Mike from Germany my bunk mate at Roncesvalle. He's doing well with a big day yesterday and a shorter one today. I pass many walking pilgrims on my bike and that makes my trip feel weird.

      I was going to go to Burgos, but I ran into Eric whom I met on the train the first day. He has been well on track and with my offset schedule I got behind him. Now I ride slowly next to him and the conversation starts. We find out about the best water in the region and Eric almost takes a ride on a wheelbarrow. When he gets to his destination in Atapuerca I decide to stay there as well. Good move. We had a great bunch of conversations. A fun filled evening.      Read more

      Grañon

      In Santo Domingo bin ich früh los: kurz nach 6. Jetzt bin ich in Grañon, einem kleinen pittoresken Ort und sitze neben einem Foodtruck und genieße mein Frühstück.
      Auf dem Weg habe ich alle meine Morgenlieder gesungen, die mir einfielen.
      - Sonnenlicht, wer zu dem Lichte strebt
      - Es tagt, der Sonne Morgenstrahl
      - Aus der Nacht tief dunklem Schatten (aus Loheland) - das muss ich noch üben
      - Auf, auf Sonnenlicht: da kenne ich nur den halben Text und auch die Melodie verliert sich
      Für „Ein heller Morgen“ habe ich doch tatsächlich 4 km gebraucht, bis es mir wieder einfiel. Je mehr ich es finden wollte, desto mehr entzog es sich.
      Eigentlich suche ich noch ein Lied, das die Sonne in der Erde und die Sonne im Himmel verbindet.
      Nun ist es halb 9 - ich gehe weiter: Ultreia.      Read more

      Grañón

      In Grañón übernachten wir in einer alten Kirche. Eine der Abende/Nächte die definitiv in Erinnerung bleiben.

      Nach der Ankunft genieße ich erst einmal in Ruhe die Sonne und ein Bier gemeinsam mit Matteo.
      Anschließend geht’s zurück und die Herberge, wo alle Pilger gemeinsam kochen. Vor dem Essen gibts dann noch eine kurze Pilgermesse in der Kirche und anschließend wird gemeinsam gegessen und abgespült.
      Das wirklich besondere an diesem Abend ist aber das Ritual, das nach dem Essen stattfindet. „The Pilgrim-Candle“. Wir sitzen im Kreis in einem nur von Kerzenschein erfüllten Raum und es wird eine Kerze herumgereicht. Derjenige der die Kerze in Händen hält teilt seine Gedanken und/oder Gründe zum Jakobsweg mit den anderen. Das ganze ist sehr emotional, auch wenn ich nicht alles verstehen kann, da es so mancher Pilger bevorzugt in seiner Muttersprache zu sprechen, aber das spielt keine Rolle, die Emotionen sind auch so greifbar. Ich verliere völlig das Zeitgefühl aber vermutlich dauert das ganze ewig, da wir annähernd 50 Personen sind.

      Hospital de Grañón

      Spending a night in a donation based, volunteer staffed hostel was a delightful contrast to the 4star experience of a few nights ago.

      I enjoy both, for very different reasons.

      Highlights include a family style dinner for about 40 people with pasta made by Italian cooks, salad made by Americans, a lentil/nettle stew made by Spaniards and French people, along with wine and bread. Conversation flowed in a mashup of European and hand-gestures and smiles.

      The Camino has a tradition of getting stamps in a "Credential": A paper passport. This Hospital (from the word hospitality) offers hugs instead... It had a distinctly sedate Burning Man feel to it in a nurturing inclusive way. The evening culminated in a candlelight ceremony in the choir section of the church (Cathedral? Big place for a town of 250 people) where we were seated in the hundreds-years-old choir stalls, sharing a bit of insight into our journeys. It was moving.

      I am glad that I stopped and feel richer for it.      Read more

      Grañon from Cirueña

      I intended to take a detour but bumped into Kristen (we met in Pamplona) and I decided to walk with her instead. After a few days solo I'm craving company and hers is delightful.

      On that line of thinking, I stopped in Grañon because it has a famously social albergue that is all about a warm familial environment.

      ...and I immediately opted to sit in the shade of an umbrella on the plaza to read! Sometimes my own mind surprises me, but I guess I need a little me-time before the socializing. Okay, then.

      The tortilla here was delicious and watching the hubbub is always a pleasure.

      Before Grañón, strolled through Santo Domingo de la Cruzada and enjoyed a fantastic tour of the Cathedral. Their collection of treasures is remarkable. Some was truly beautiful.

      My favorite part of the Cathedral is the enclosure *in* the main part of the church that houses, I kid you not: a live hen and cock. They are white and they look pretty darn bored in their little chicken prison. I am told that they swap the poultry out weekly. I don't know what happens upon retirement.

      Ok, my *other* favorite part of the self-guided tour was finding a door that took us up into the battlements (defenses) it was like being a kid scrambling through secret passageways. Very fun.

      The walk was not particularly remarkable beyond Santo Domingo. It felt easy, not very much up/down and nearly all of it was decent quality gravel.      Read more

      Villafranca Montes de Oca - San Anton

      Our longest day yet, 18 miles in under 8 hours. We went a long time before our first breakfast and ended up skipping the second breakfast. We enjoyed lunch and a long break where we could take off our shoes and give our feet a break. We had 4 beds reserved at the albergue so that took away the rest of trying to race through the miles. We also know what we're capable of too and feeling pretty good about ourselves.

      Nuestro día más largo hasta la fecha, 18 millas en menos de 8 horas. Fuimos mucho tiempo antes de nuestro primer desayuno y terminamos omitiendo el segundo desayuno. Disfrutamos el almuerzo y un largo descanso donde pudimos quitarnos los zapatos y descansar. Teníamos 4 camas reservadas en el albergue, así que eso nos quitó el estrés de correr a través de las millas. También sabemos de lo que somos capaces y nos sentimos bastante bien con nosotras mismas.      Read more
