      Camino duro

      8 Ogos 2022, Sepanyol ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

The whole room started very early today around 4.30 am! One of the last were a gay German couple who studied catholic theology, which is quite brave, given where the catholic church still is! We had a good breakfast and went quite fast! As almost every day we passed a Korean family! The mother walks fully covered and even wears gloves! I heard it’s about the ideal in Korea to have white skin (which shows you are in the upper class, working in the city! We passed a house where a little dog was looking for some hugs through the fence, which we couldn’t avoid giving her! Really cute - I miss my luna! 🥲
On the downhill areas I realized that my knee and femur mussel of the left leg really hurt! Maybe we ran too fast, maybe it was because of the shoe inlays? However, I need to get it fixed, we are „just“ at 200 km! Our new drug here is Radio Salil! I think that Silvia would be a great Sales person 🙂!
We heard from others that several people already give in! We won’t see them again!
30 Km were tough today! Tomorrow it will be a bit shorter! Did I tell you hoe hard the Camino is? It REALLY is hard!!!
Song of the day was „Walking on sunhine“ but at the end it was rather „I will survive“! When I heard the Disco Boys today I felt homesick as it remembered me of my loving lady! 🥰 „ One more time“

      Marcelino Lobato

      30 April, Sepanyol ⋅ ☀️ 11 °C

He estado un buen rato charlando con Marcelino que me ha contado muchas anécdotas del Camino y de sus otros viajes. Y es conocido mundialmente este peregrino riojano que ya no se acuerda cuántas veces ha hecho el camino. Y tiene su propio sello!Baca lagi

    • Logroño to Nájera

      7 September 2022, Sepanyol ⋅ ⛅ 55 °F

After our rest day we got after it and made it to Najera in good order. We air our feet out with a rest break after a few hours, change our socks after the midpoint and then a socks-off-foot-check-airing at the 3/4 point. It wasn't as hot today so the feet feel a bit better tonight. Now waiting for restaurants to open... Cause we be hungry!Baca lagi

      Stadspark Logroño

      18 Mei 2022, Sepanyol ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Na eerst een hele druk spits in Logroño verlaten we de stad uiteindelijk via een zeer groot stadspark dat meteen een speciaal Camino pad is. We passeren letterlijk tientallen lopende pelgrims. Baca lagi

Sun AM Walk - Logrono to Navarette

      2 Oktober 2022, Sepanyol ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

Bright blue sky and warm temps were what we got today as we left Logrono. Many were out enjoying their Sun morning in the huge reservoir park we walked through. We saw a man playing a ukulele as he walked. There were also ducks, swans & lots of cyclists. It was hot walking, low 80 degree temps. We found some shade & had a picnic w cheese, ham, and croissants compliments of the hotel breakfast buffet. On our way into town through vineyards we met a guy who had been walking from Austria with a tent, and all his gear on a cart. We passed by a bull, a fence that people have used twigs and branches to make crosses, as well as Don Jacobo winery. We could see the steeple of the village church as we entered the village of Navarette. The church bells really do ring here. The inside of the church is beautiful.Baca lagi

      Day 7 Sansol to Logrono

      24 April, Sepanyol ⋅ ☁️ 45 °F

Sansol to Torres del Rio to Vianna to Logroño. 14 miles today in about 5 hours. 35,401 steps, including a bit around Logrono for groceries and dinner (and finding my hostel, which was right in front of me the whole time). But the road around 7:15 today and walked a whole 1 km to the next town for breakfast. My usual Neapolitan pastry with cafe con leche. Two ~11 km (6.2 mile) stretches between towns today. Did the first one at a slower pace than normal to allow a friend who stayed 4 miles before Sansol to catch up at the next town. A pretty little stretch with lots of rolling hills. They call this segment the Knee Wrecker, which I thought odd since it is mild compared to the first 4 days. But my knees were pretty sore still, so maybe it’s the accumulation? Vianna was a nice town, and as the only rest/food pace today, pretty busy with pilgrims. It amazes me how these small towns can have such grand churches - 11 big alters in their main one and it was “just” an iglesia, not a catedral. There was also a ruin of a 15th century church that was really pretty, and still had some of its original murals despite being exposed to the elements. They sure knew how to build things. Pretty flat and not very exciting stretch into Logrono- pretty vineyards and grass fields leading into 2.5 miles of industrial park heading into Logrono. And one last big hill because why not?

Right as we entered, a big group of kids - guessing 13 or 14 years old - mobbed us. At first I thought it was a pickpocket situation, but then a women came up to calm them and explained she was their English teacher taking them in a field trip along part of the Camino to experience it and practice their English. They were really fun and full of questions about America and the Camino (although one girl was clearly hoping I was British). One boy asked if I knew Colin from Michigan. Sadly I do not. They followed us into the city, mimicking our walk and pretending to have backpacks and poles. We felt like quite the celebrities! My hostel room is simple but nice with a wonderful 5 head shower that took me a bit to figure out. And it’s smack in the middle of Casco Antigua (the old medieval town). No sight-seeing today - just took a long shower, rested, ran a few errands and caught up with people back home. Met my friend for grocery shopping and dinner. Finally had some vegetables for dinner - a nice salmon, prawn and anchovy salad. It’s very carb heavy in the smaller towns, which is good for walking, cheap and yummy, but I was craving vegetables and protein.

      Santander here i come

      2 Jun 2023, Sepanyol ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

A trip to the bus station that ought to have taken 20 minutes has taken me an hour and ten minutes panicking that I was gonna miss my bus, picked up the pace and kept asking people on the street "Por favor, Ayudami, yo necesito El autobus estacion gracias...!! The Ayudami politely really works?! People laugh at me, a grown adult asking for help!! Glad to make their day and got here with twenty minutes to spare?

Just a couple of photos of breakfast this morning, so you see Sarah I took your advice! Grapefruit! A photo of the map to get here after I got lost..and the bus station that has people's homes right above it.! Imagine living there!

And we're away! Leaving logrono !! A cool 20 degrees here at the moment in Victoria...on way to Santander.nearly there, now 25 degrees out.. we've been through Victoria, Bilbao, la rozas, and I've seen the sea! What a wonderful sight!

      Bus ride to Najera

      30 September 2023, Sepanyol ⋅ ☀️ 73 °F

So! My report from yesterday about feeling better was a little premature. David is feeling better! I am super sick now though. And with good reason! I tested positive for COVID. So we are hanging out in the hotel room in Nájera waiting impatiently for my immune system to beat up on the little COVID’s! 🦠

We don’t actually have pictures of much today as mostly we were masked and slinking from one hotel room to the bus and into another room. I have to figure out how to get David some food tonight. He gets disoriented so he can’t go on his own and I need to keep my germy self away from other people as much as possible. I haven’t eaten anything but a cup of yogurt and some soda and water in the last day and a half.

It seems like every person I’ve known who’s had COVID in the past few months has had a mild case. I’m not sure why I’m so sick! Hopefully I’ll have better news to report tomorrow!

      6. DAY | 23 km

      4 Mei 2023, Sepanyol ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

      Day 9 - Logrono

      16 September 2023, Sepanyol ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

Another day of big climbing in the hills: some vey steep sections but with nice long rolling descents. Found a squashed tarantula sized scorpion on the road - caution needed before sitting on any rocks. Another early start but we arrived before 3pm. We were greeted by the Rioja wine festival in full swing. The whole city is full and it is clear that red wine has been liberally spread about. Good atmosphere though and we’ll head out later to watch the marching band parades!
      52kms cycled today, 900m up, 950m down.
