      Looking at the pictures

      1. april, Spanien ⋅ 🌬 13 °C

Toddled off for a beer, 'read' the paper to stay awake. Realised an adorable thing they do here, but interestingly only for certain sports, is put the age of whoever they're talking about in the caption.

Also, why do hospitality managers always find a sense of creativity ONLY when it comes to bathroom signs? A particularly wild example here.

      Worth its weight?

      2. april, Spanien ⋅ ☁️ 3 °C

Currently packing up to leave Los Arcos, with 28km between me and Logrono. I finished the third in the Thursday Murder Club series yesterday, after plucking it gleefully from the albergue shelf in SJPP. Now I find myself weighing up (literally) if this will be worth lugging. I have wanted to read it for a while and it feels like another gift from the Camino, but ooft. She thicc.Læs mere

      Estella to Los Arcos

      9. april, Spanien ⋅ ⛅ 43 °F

100 miles done. 400 to go. 20% of the way!!

Nothing starts the day better than a chocolate croissant, a fresh squeezed orange juice, and a cafe con leche. I’m getting so used to this daily routine, I may start having to incorporate breakfast into my mornings back home.

You know what else starts the day right? About a mile into my walk, I found the Fuente del Vino. Yes that’s right, a wine fountain! I dumped out my water bottle and enjoyed a pretty good tempranillo over the next few miles of walking.

Chilly and windy today but I kept my sleeves rolled up because the wind felt amazing on my arms and face as I watched the wind blow through the tall grass around me. The wind was swirling and dancing and it was kind of a magical experience. No, I wasn’t high. Just enjoying the combination of the amazing scenery, crisp air, muscle exhaustion, and tempranillo running through my veins.

Bryan and I have always dreamt of owning a wine bar. Today, I’m thinking that if we did, we would obviously then have to travel the world sourcing great wine from vineyards… and those travel expenses would be a business write-off, right?

Day 8: Estella a Los Arcos

      9. april, Spanien ⋅ ☀️ 50 °F

It’s an odd thing, staying in albergues. It kind of feels like summer camp, except the “campers” are 20-70 year olds who all speak different languages and may never meet again. Tonight’s roommates are a young Romanian medical student, a mid-20s French guy who wants to study Japanese cooking, and a probably late-20s American teacher. Next door is a group of South Koreans, one of whom snores quite loudly. That’s another common occurrence- when you’ve got adults sleeping in the same space, there’s always someone snoring. Thankfully, I can sleep through noise pretty well and have some good ear plugs. Showers also feel like camp- there’s a tiny shower cubicle with no guarantee of hot water. Sometimes there’s a private small space next to it to get dressed in, but you have to try to keep your clean clothes dry while changing.

The last couple of days I’ve been catching up on the Bible plan I’m following this year, The Bible Recap. As I walk everyday and listen to Genesis, Numbers, Leviticus, and Ruth, I think of how God showed his never ending faithfulness. And I think that maybe this time isn’t so much for me to have immediate divine wisdom but to grow my faith more. The walk is early (though I’m close to 20% done!), I still have a long way to go and plenty of time to understand more.

A couple highlights from the day: I went to the wine fountain, which is put on by a local bodega. It was a bit early for wine, so I didn’t have more than a sip. I saw some beautiful landscapes today, met some guys from the Canary Islands who were impressed by me carrying my pack and doing it solo (and who said to let them know if I’m ever on their island), and had a nice dinner with the current roommates.

      Los Arcos

      24. april, Spanien ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

Just completed the walk from Estella to Los Arcos today. 🚶‍♂️💚 The journey blessed us with views of wide open fields, a canvas painted with the most vibrant shades of nature. Truly beautiful!
Though the path is getting tougher, it’s more of a mental challenge than a physical one now. Each step forward is a step deeper into our own thoughts and resilience. Pushing through, one breathtaking view at a time.

      Los Arcos to Logrono

      1. maj 2018, Spanien ⋅ ⛅ 5 °C

Today was an exceptionally tough day. My guide book said: “Enjoy the views as you walk through the beautiful rolling hills of La Rioja vineyards”. Well, that sounds beautiful but it translated to having to hump your pack up and down a lot of hills! My goal today was not to push it to Logroño as it was to far, however I reached Viana where I planned to stay and I could not find a bed or a room so I pushed on with a guy named James from the UK where he had a room booked in Logrono. We limped into Logrono at around 6pm. An 18 mile day which would have been fine had it been flat...but the hills...Ugh! I plan on a shorter day tomorrow...it is only an 8mile hike to the small town of Navarrette so I am shooting for that. Take care, I hope everyone is well. Thank you for checking in!Læs mere

      Third stop - Los Arcos

      2. maj 2018, Spanien ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

      Estella -> 21km -> Los Arcos
Although the walk was shorter than the other days, I feel the third day in my legs. Tired, but happy to have made it so far! I will need a big paella and a glass of sangria to make up for itLæs mere

      Los Arcos

      27. juni 2018, Spanien ⋅ ☀️ 81 °F

We left Estella around 6 am after a great night’s sleep. We had gone to the store last night to get some bananas, snack bars and salty chips to carry today. Yesterday, I didn’t eat enough, and I wanted to not make that mistake again. We motored out of town with another group of young women. We got to a spot where we could go left or right, and we all went right, so we missed seeing the wine fountain. 🙁 We talked to this Irish guy later today, and he said that it was not open this morning when he went by, so that made me feel better.

We stopped in Azquata for breakfast, and noticed, as we were leaving, that we were in quite a bubble of pilgrims today. We hoped that Los Arcos had enough beds.

We spent most of today walking by farmland-vineyards, wheat fields, potatoes, and some family gardens. The family gardens are so perfectly tended to, and we have noticed how carefully they water each row or section. They do not waste any water at all!

A surprising moment was when we came upon a food truck along the way with music playing. The guy running it had food, snacks, cold drinks - even had beer taps! We grabbed a cold drink and continued on. We used our lightweight reflective umbrellas for the first time today to keep the sun off of us. It made a huge difference compared to yesterday when we didn’t use them.

We arrived at our place for tonight right as it opened. Within an hour it was booked full. Our friend, Anja, just barely got a bed at the municipal albergue when she arrived around 3:00. So glad she did, because she looked too tired to go on.

We spent the evening in the plaza having some sangria/beer and watching the World Cup. They had a tv rolled out for the Korea vs Germany game. There were a lot of happy Koreans in our group when Korea won. 🙂 We ended our evening with a meal served by the family here, and then going to the church for a pilgrims blessing. The inside of the church was crazy amazing! It would take years to notice all of the details.

Tonight, we are in a room with 3 bunk beds, and Alan is the only man, which hasn’t phased the Spanish women at all...They were trying to teach him some Spanish and then embarrassed him by saying he was handsome. 😂😂

Tomorrow, we have a 17 mile day to Logroño where we are splurging on our own room with our own bathroom and air conditioning!! Woohoo!!

      Beautiful Walk to Los Arcos

      7. september 2018, Spanien ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

Today was great...it was still 24 kms, but it was undulating with gradual inclines, and through spectacular countryside. I have to say that I am relieved, as yesterday when we arrived at the hotel I was so hot and tired, I wondered if this was going to be fun after all. But today we set off with a different mindset - determined not to push too hard - we didn’t think we had been pushing hard - but today we almost sauntered! And also we stopped for a proper lunch - bacon and cheese bocadillo, apple - I don’t think we ate enough yesterday, just picked on a sesame bar....anyway, we are very happy and feel excellent.

This is quite a mountainous area, there are mountains in the distance in every direction, and so many beautiful little hill towns. I am sorry there no sunflowers now, but there is still a spectacular panorama in every direction. More and more vineyards, with grapes ripening and looking heavy, olive groves, and we saw several fields of asparagus.

This morning, soon after leaving Estella we passed the Fuente de Vino - the wine fountain for pilgrims...a monastery has a tap in the wall where anyone can get wine - there is also a spigot of water beside it! So even though it was only about 9 am we lined up and had a taste (handy that you can then fill up the bottle with water again). We didn’t do this last time...too intent on reaching the destination, and the morning not exactly a wine drinking time! But we got into the spirit of it today, and it was very drinkable wine! There is a webcam there that shows it all....

Anyway, here we are in Los Arcos at a very nice hotel (different from last time) and we have a great room on a corner, looking over a square and trees, and close to everything - this is a very small town. And it is so good that dinners are included...we don’t have to think about where to go, and it is like going to a restaurant each night - the food is so good, many choices, and beautifully presented. And we are always so hungry!!

      Camino Frances 4

      2. august 2019, Spanien ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C
