      Navarrete

      2. Oktober 2022 in Spanien ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

A shorter walk today, about 13.5 kms from our hotel, to Hostel Villa de Navarrete.

Only one ridge to climb today, then down to the next valley and a short climb up to the small hill town of Navarrete. Walked into town just after 1 PM.

Met a Austrian man whole started walking in Austria, said his total trip will be over 3000 kilometers. He walks with his pack on a two wheeled cart, that clips onto a hip harness. He walked through some of the Alps with his setup. Today's ridge he described as a "bump"!

      Update:

Added some photos of the inside of the Navarrete church!

Then we had a beer with our friends Patsy and Kevin of Portland ME, and James, an Anglican Minister of the Church of Ireland of County Kildare, who is walking the Camino!

      2. Oktober 2022 in Spanien ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

Rest stop at a café in Ventosa. About 7 km of walking so far. 11km left to Najera.

There are lots of vineyards in Rioja, who knew. Still some grapes left to harvest.

Bright sunny day, temps about 60 now, will get up to the mid 80's this afternoon. We should get a whole week of this weather!Weiterlesen

      22. Etappe: Navarrete (34,3 km)

      18. November 2022 in Spanien ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

So was wie öffentliche Toiletten gibts hier leider kaum 🙁

      Day 12: Navarette to Nájera

      29. Mai 2023 in Spanien ⋅ ☁️ 57 °F

      Mileage: 10.5 miles or so
      Elevation gain: 722
      Elevation loss: 791
Weather: beautiful and sunny until we were already in Nájera, when it rained pretty hard for a little while
      Total mileage: 121.75

Today’s walk of under 11 miles and not too much climbing felt almost like a day off! I’m also figuring out how to help my feet feel better, which is a relief.

We were expecting rain today, but clear skies met us on our leisurely 8:00 start. There was a bakery next to our lodging but they didn’t have coffee!! We had a couple of nice breaks today and the first one included cafes con leche, so it worked out.

Even with the leisurely start we arrived in Nàjera relatively early, so we enjoyed some treats and actually did a little shopping! Nothing exciting - I’m going to try some new socks and we had run out of chocolate. Another great day.

      1. Not so many wildflowers now but these hollyhocks wished us well as we left Navarrete.
      2. The eponymous gate of Puerta del Cementerio.
      3. Detail from the gate. Was it St. Michael who slayed the dragon?
      4. So. Many. Vineyards today. Made for a beautiful walk.
      5. The town of Ventosa from a distance.
      6. and 7. More beautiful vineyards
      8. These distinctive stone huts served as shelter for farmers at one point, apparently.
      9. We enjoyed pinchos (tapas) and sangrias (which we saw hilariously translated as “bleedings” in Viana) at an outdoor bar before the rain started.
      10. Street in Nájera after the rain

      Navarrete

      16. Juni 2023 in Spanien ⋅ ☁️ 86 °F

Just a quickie. Walked after dialysis to get part of tomorrow’s climb out of the way. Stopped in Navarrete—a lovely little village. I’ve attached pictures of the church here as well as the BEST dinner we’ve enjoyed on the Camino, which is saying quite a bit! We enjoyed paella along with a number of finger foods (I went slightly crazy picking out a bunch of things from the display case with no.idea of what many were!).

Taking a breakfast break as I write this then on to Najera, after an early start to the day.

      Navarrete

      1. September 2023 in Spanien ⋅ 🌩️ 21 °C

Another village on a steep hillside.
All the churches are massive, and the decorations inside are over the top.
While we waited for our accommodation to open, we had a delicious lunch, bacon, and eggs. Every pilgrim meal consists of hot chips with a piece of meat, not inviting at all.
We are staying at Bein Camino Hostal in a private room with proper beds and our own bathroom, with a full-size towel. It is glorious.
We had just finished dinner when the thunderstorm and rain started. We can hear rolling thunder, love it.

      To Navarette

      11. September 2023 in Spanien ⋅ ⛅ 73 °F

We found out today from a woman that the group of people she has been walking with call Alan the “Smiling Man” 😂😂 Plus, another man came up to him the day before yesterday and commented on his smile and good energy. Is this the same man I’m walking with??😂😂

We have entered the Rioja region of Northern Spain, which is best known for barrel-aged red wines made from Tempranillo and Garnacha grapes. 🍇 We have been walking by many fields of grapes and it looks like they are very close to harvest time!

Instead of staying in the big city of Logroño, we are in Navarette. Tomorrow, we will only walk 10 miles to Najera 🙂 That will give our feet a bit of a rest.

      Another easy walk

      23. April 2023 in Spanien ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

We are now at Navarrete after an easy 13 km walk. This is a lovely little town on a hill surrounded with vineyards and the rich red Rioja soil. We walked quite slowly so as not to be too early, arrived at about 12.30, stopped for coffee and also for fresh OJ before checking in and room ready, bags here, and we have settled in!

It was a perfect temperature for walking, coolish and quite a lot of cloud cover. It actually feels cold now, and I am wearing a fleece that I thought would never be worn again once we left the Pyrenees…weather app says 19° but it is wrong! It has now become a little drizzly, but doesn’t matter, and tomorrow should be dry and still cooler for our 17 km walk to Nájera. We walked out through the outer suburbs of Logroño- you realise it’s quite a bit city and not just the historical centre - and through a big park and bird sanctuary…very pleasant. And also passed the big bull structure high on a hill that is equivalent maybe to our big banana …. you can see it for miles in all directions…anyway, a very good and easy walk…our hotel has a pilgrim menu for dinner so all is well.

      A Walk in the Park

      29. September 2022 in Spanien ⋅ 🌧 16 °C

Today was quite literally a walk in a park. After a kilometre or so in Logrono suburbia the Camino took me to a city park followed by the Grande Parc Logrono which spread past the city outskirts into the nearby fields. Another five kilometres and I was at my next nights stay in Navarette.

The new sandals were a dream and I set Logrono talking with my stylish sock and sandal combination. My wide feet, already splayed more that normal from those barefoot years in Indonesia's steamy climes in my childhood, may be permanently even wider if I walk 600km in sandals but at least my toes aren't numb and ready to fall off at the end of the day. No hobbling was involved. Mind you I felt pretty good the first day after a rest day last time too so let's see how the week pans out. It was flat and mainly paved too so no dust and loose gravel in the sandals on day one, take two.

I saw squirrels. 😍😍😍 And ducks. The water is low and Spain and it's vineyards are looking a bit worse for wear after their intense summer heat wave. It been trying to rain for several days now but never more than a few drops falls, not enough to wet the pavement. It's colder than I expected but it's a bit early in the season and it's supposed to warm up for a week or two in a couple of days.

My accommodation for the night is on the main street in another old town on a hill, next to the church whose bell will chime late into the night. I love standing on my little balcony overlooking the Plaza and the street and watching life in Spain. My little balcony on the first floor is about level with the bar across the street that has tables out on the paving in front of the church. Could be a noisy spot tonight.

This town Navarette, has a bit more life to it. So many of the town's I've walked through so far have seemed almost closed. There has been hardly anyone around except pilgrims and a few shops and bars for pilgrims. Most buildings in these old hilltop towns are shuttered and I wonder if anyone lives there or if they are holiday homes. Maybe the occupants head off early to work in the cities. Navarette is a bit more alive but it feels more industrial and maybe there are some jobs around that keep it going.
