      Day 3 Cycling Coastal Camino

      20 mai, Espagne ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

Today we are cycling another 50+ km from Viana do Castelo to Oia and our gel seats arrived - yaaay.
      DESCRIPTION
Start the day towards the beachside town of Vila Praia de Ancora, cycling along the coast
to get there and avoiding the challenging climb where the official Camino route goes. Continue with a coastal cycle path
that connects you to Moledo, just before reaching the pretty town of Caminha at the mouth of the River Minho as you head more inland. There is a beautiful parish church
here, the clock tower and the decorative fountain in the charming square of Praca
Conselheiro Silva Torres. Here you have to take the scenic ferry and cross the River Minho, the natural border with Spain. Cycle
through the fishing town of A Guarda to follow the Camino along dirt tracks and tarmac roads to the village of Oia, where a 12th century monastery dominates this
small but attractive village. A small beach can also be found in front of this monastery.

We typically have the same breakfast each day and make a sandwich and take some fruit or yoghurt for lunch. We saw the couple who are following the same route as us with the same company and they are having trouble with the bike seats too and found yesterday very difficult.
We got ready to head out with our gel seats and the first sit felt much better🤗 Macs Adventure set our navigation for the Coastal Route so we apparently bypassed the mountain and looking at it, we were happy with that!! We had an absolutely gorgeous day on the coast. The weather was very warm today even with the ocean breeze. We saw a few round, stone structures right on the shore ( possibly decommissioned windmills?). We came across several Forts all from the same era, looking at their design and square shape. We passed the Praca Fort before stopping for coffee and a snack in Ancora, which also had a fort. Today we had such a fun mixture of paths. We were on smooth bike paths at the beginning and end of our ride today, we cycled on long sections of boardwalk, through some really nice forested paths, we had sections of cobblestone, but not as bad or as much as yesterday. We had one section of it today that we could not possibly ride up. The cobbles were massive. We had a section of zig zags through farmland with cobbles, then flat road. It reminded us of biking on the farmland towards Abbotsford. We had a beautiful ride right along the ocean on boardwalk which turned to deeper sand so had to walk our bikes through that and down some stairs. We had just a few small hills and a few sections we walkwd up because of the steep grade or ginormous cobbles. We had some really nice sections along old walls again, and lots of sections with old lower rock walls bordering properties. Many were breaking apart, but visible. We watched a man herd his sheep across the road, right near us. That was fun. We rode to the ferry which takes us into Spain, but it was broken down so the lady sent us about a km or so down the road to see Miguel and take his "fast" ride over. You can see by the photos that we were in for an adventure. Miguel was just fantastic and friendly. He had such an amazing personality and looked after us all, our bikes, and us "ladies" by giving us life jackets to sit on and also put on. He was constantly checking if we were okay. It was a very quick ride across to a beach. We got ourselves off the boat with Miguels helping hand. Though I tweaked my knee slightly which took me a bit to get warmed up again so it wasnt hurting while riding. Thankfully no worse. Miguel offloaded our bikes and we sat right there on the beach and enjoyed our lunch. We were off our route for navigation, so had to wind our way through the streets of Meledo then through A Guarda to get back on track. From here our ride was so beautiful along a nice gravel path past older homes and the old rock fences just off the ocean. We tried to stop for a beer in Oia, but we were a bit too late because the time here makes us an hour later yet. We are now 9 hours later than home. So our greeting to other pilgrims also changed once in Spain. We are now saying Buen Camino, not Bom Camino (Portugese). We saw lots of pilgrims walking again today.
We found our Hotel Glasgow right on the ocean with a beautiful pool( too cold to go in, unfortunately). We showered then I sat in the sun, did some stretching and journaled. Today was my favorite ride of our 3 so far with the landscape variety, gel seat and fewer cobbles!! We had a nice "Pilgrims" dinner option tonight. We had wine, sparkling water, Hake fish, pork, Russian salad ( similar to potato salad) and squid that was the best we have all tasted. We are all so tired today.

      Ramellosa

We slept for an extra hour, having lost it yesterday, and so left later than usual. Today was a 20km day, most definitely! After a lovely Spanish breakfast (freshly squeezed orange juice and tostada with jamon and queso), we got on our way. It was already quite late, but it didn't matter, it was only 20km!
A walk up and out of A Guarda took us to a rocky headland, which was absolutely stunning. The waves were pretty fierce but the sun was shining and we were doing well. Neither of us had worn our waterproof trousers, but had them handy, just in case... (yesterday's 'light' showers were far from it😱). Well, the time came to put them on, and thank goodness we did - the rain lashed down and the wind blew. We had a great time trying to get our trousers on without the wind blowing them, or us, away 😂. Honestly, it was amazing and absolutely spectacular, but a massive pain to walk in! Still, we soldiered on and on and on... there was almost nothing to stop for until we reached Oia, 15km away. No wonder our feet were killing us! We'd had no option but to carry on walking because there was nowhere to stop in the rain. Not the nicest day for walking!
We stopped at the small Ermita de San Sebastian, just before Oia, and Julie lit a candle for Nigel 🥰. It was good to take the weight off our feet and sit quietly, remembering.
It had started raining again then, so we walked as quickly as our poor little feet could carry us into Oia, where we found a sandwich for lunch.
It didn't take long for us to convince ourselves that a bus or taxi to our accommodation at Mougas Camping was a pretty good idea. It was only supposed to be 6.5km... well, after a taxi ride of at least 10km, we finally arrived. No, we're not camping! We have a small room with a balcony and the most amazing view!
Vigo tomorrow, but that's nearly 40km and I think I'd cry if I had to do that, so we're walking as far as we want (probably to Nigrán, about 20km away) and taking a bus.
The boys arrive tomorrow and I don't know who's in for the greatest shock...😱😂😘

      Galicia!!

      14 avril, Espagne ⋅ ☀️ 73 °F

Nothing better than waking up before daybreak, grabbing your backpack and jumping into a taxi with a speeding driver who is listening to thumping Calvin Harris techno music as he careens down small streets to deposit you at the marina- we’re awake now! Obrigato senhor! Our boat captain was jolly and happy but the young guys that were with us were very concerned that we get in and out of the small skiff without falling in the water 😂 We arrived to the beach (and Spain!) and started hiking. The early morning sandy paths we were walking on were through a pine forest and then out again to the seaside. As waves crashed we could smell the sea salt and feel the spray- invigorating! We marched ahead until the first café and stopped for tea and coffee, banana toasts and empanadas. After refreshments we headed to the town of A Guarda and the beautiful 16th century church of Santa Maria- we arrived just as Mass was finishing but went in for prayers and blessings. The church is filled with paintings, statues, stained glasses and painted wood icon altar pieces- lovely!! So easy to be reverent in these holy places full of beauty. We next passed the chapel of the Virgin de Guia with the Way of the Cross outside complete with tall granite crosses. Now that we are in Spain we also see more granite in the fixed Camino markers that give the exact mileage to Santiago de Compostella- it’s great to see those numbers dwindling ( slowly ) and we sisters are all so determined to keep walking. We encourage each other and laugh and chat. And we pray together and we even have been singing religious hymns from our childhood along the way. I’m sure the Sisters of Mercy from St. Mary’s school in tiny Rockledge, Florida would be proud. We, on the other hand, are grateful for our Catholic upbringing and school and the selflessness of the nuns who taught us. And we keep walking! Some of the paths are rocky and some areas of them are muddy and treacherous from last week’s rains. After 14 miles of glorious weather we entered the tiny hamlet of Oia, a beachside gem. The Monastery of Santa Maria La Réal stands majestically directly on the beachfront. It is Romanesque in design and from 1137- it has been used as a monastery, a place for prayer and a defensive site against attacks from pirates. Tonight as we entered the village, the townspeople were gathered around the town square talking and laughing and enjoying the evening- we did laundry hurriedly and had a delicious seafood dinner with fresh scallops and shrimp and watched the sun set- tomorrow will come early and we must be prepared to keep heading north!En savoir plus

      Day 7 on the Camino

      5 octobre 2023, Espagne ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Started our day with an amazing breakfast at our guest house in Villadesusa after which we headed off down the rural roads on a cool morning. Came across the local town cemetery. Not too far along the same road we discovered another pilgrim cairn with many more stones than what we have previously seen. It seems the local people are contributing some beautifully painted stones. I of course liked the cat one. We walked into As Marinas and stopped for lunch at a beautiful hotel with an upper patio overlooking the water and ordered a couple of delicious salads. Then on to Baiona - another beautiful town of 12,000+ people - where we visited the castle overlooking the city and then had a tapas dinner and some great Spanish Vermouth.En savoir plus

      Corpus Christi decorations in Caminha

      30 mai, Espagne ⋅ 🌙 19 °C

Yesterday we walked from Viana do Castelo to Caminha and came upon the beginning of street decorating in preparation for the Corpus Christi processions today. What an amazing event! Various city/ religious groups decorate different streets using everything from coarse salt in different colours, ground coffee, coloured wood chips, cedar branches, and a variety of flowers or petals. These people work through the night and by morning all is complete. Our only regret is that we weren't able to stay there today to watch the processions and church events.En savoir plus

      Day 6 on the camino

      4 octobre 2023, Espagne ⋅ 🌙 19 °C

We left Portugal and traveled by a "water taxi" to Spain. Another day of beach, forest and road travel with some lovely stops along the way. We took Alayne Sinclair's advice finally and stopped for a "second breakfast" of "pum king" cake and almond cake with cappuccino. We stopped for lunch in Portocelos and had some great food - calamari and a bocadillo - but more importantly we enjoyed a beautiful view. Finally we arrived Villadesuso and our beautiful guest house. Mary and I were the only guests. Our host drove us into town for a great dinner (two amazing salads) overlooking the water and picked us up to bring us home and we are now sitting in the comfy lounge enjoying some quiet time. Finally, Mary's photo of the donkey outside her window at our guest house.

Day 7 - Caminha to Oia

      18 avril, Espagne ⋅ ☀️ 73 °F

I think we were smuggled into Spain today……

Getting up and going today was hard. Probably because we were all unusually sound asleep when the alarm went off. The thought of walking all day had lost its appeal. But today was not a day to dawdle as we had paid ahead for breakfast at the Albergue and a taxi to the river to catch a boat for Spain.

Well breakfast was great and then the taxi showed up as promised. Four of us were loaded in and then sped away through the streets of Caminha like we were in a 007 movie. We held on for dear life and were then dumped off at an obscure place on the river where three guys were waiting for us and yelling 6€! 6€! We had our money ready, threw it at guy #1, was loaded into the boat by guy #2 and guy #3 threw us each a life jacket and just said “policia” which we understood to be he was only giving us a life jacket because it was the law. It was a crazy 15 minute boat ride across a choppy river with water slashing in the boat the whole way. We laughed until we cried 😂

The driver pulled up on the opposite shore (no dock) and we jumped out. He waved, backed away and off he went. We were now standing on the shore of Spain with zero direction where to go. Again we laughed until we cried 😂

This was the beginning of the best day ever. Perfect weather (again), perfect views, amazing second breakfast stop, fun conversations with other pilgrims, another great Albergue with free washer AND DRYER (so no handwashing and line drying today!!)

I don’t want to jinx it but after a questionable start to our morning, this may be the best Camino day EVER. ❤️
