      Viana

      18 settembre 2022, Spagna ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

Cezar Borgia zginął w czasie oblężenia miasta a był on synem późniejszego papieża Aleksandra VI.
To tyle z ciekawostek.😊
      Jutro wchodzimy do krainy win.😁😍❤️
I thought we were in wine country already for at least 3 days😍! Everywhere around were grapevines with different types of grapes, mainly the dark tiny ones, people are growing them on the balconies and above the garages, too! It looks beautiful ❤️
They have been lifesavers for us, when on the road we needed some extra sugar, numerous times we just grabbed cluster of 🍇 to fullfil the carbs deficiency 😋. Same with figs, blackberries and almonds, all just in the reach of the hand...
As they say: don't praise the day before the sun sets, after yesterday's kind day to my feet, today I developed first 2 blisters😳. Dr Tom just finished wound care for them, and hopefully today won't be a painful day😊. I'm posting few more pic from last day in a new footprint 👣. Thank you All for walking with us🥰❤️

Day 8 - To Los Arcos

      16 settembre 2022, Spagna ⋅ 🌙 17 °C

Day 8 - To Los Arcos
      21.6 km; Temp 21-22°C;
      Difficulty rating 2/3.
A sidenote, if you click on the map at the top of my trip and then zoom in you will see each stop I make.

This morning only 3 km out of Estella was an amazing wine fountain!
“Bodegas Irache”. I am well into the wine vineyards now, and I went through more beautiful forest paths today. Notice the yellow arrow on the tree, guiding our way. A church atop a mountain has me wondering why it was built there and how many people actually attend. I was lucky enough to hear the bell ringing from such a vast distance.
The intense walking every day makes me thankful for my water being so accessible; that I don’t have to search/reach for it. Alas I arrived in Los Arcos. It was so quiet!! I guess it was still siesta time. But the guard dog was on duty. There was a really amazing church in Los Arcos where I hoped to attend. But there was no mass yesterday. So I lit candles.

Sandi had a rough start she has strained her neck but she is a real trooper and walked on one foot at a time. Buen CaminoLeggi altro

      Viana

      29 luglio 2022, Spagna ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

On my way to Logroño, I started the day walking with an older German couple. They started walking in Munich!!! That would be 2,700k to Santiago, and they have done over 2/3 of the way, in a bit over 3 months. They started with very heavy packs, as they had to be equipped for the snow. Then they shipped the winter gear home. Legends!
At one point they decided to stop for a coffee, but I kept going. I walked the rest of the way on my own, at a slow and steady pace.
I stopped here for a break and a snack at Viana. It was getting very hot, and just sitting in the shade for a while felt great.
Although I was walking on my own, I exchanged many 'buen caminos' with other walkers, and I could recognise some faces. Then, at rest stops, we can count on those familiar people to look after the backpack while one goes to the toilet, for example. We may not know each other's names, but we're all part of the same big thing and we look after each other.

Inglesia Santa Maria de la Asuncion

      28 maggio 2022, Spagna ⋅ ☀️ 75 °F

The church of Santa María de la Asunción located in Viana ( Navarra , Spain ) is a religious building built between 1250 and 1312.
Of course my interest was to find the grave of Cesare Borgia the son of Pope Alexander VI and for all purposes the Machiavellian Prince

César Borgia died during a treacherous ambush, in Viana, on March 12, 1507.
Initially buried in a Sepulcher inside the church in the sixteenth century his remains were dragged out and buried in the plaza before church
later on reburied again at the top platform of the steps to the church with the inscription that you see here

      59. Wandertag

      26 maggio 2023, Spagna

Leggi altro

Humidity, Mud, a Surprise and Bulls!

We thought today would be a bit easier, since it was a little shorter, but our feet are TIRED! There was a huge thunderstorm last night and then it rained until 6:30 this morning. We ended up leaving a bit later than usual, so that meant the sun ☀️ hit us earlier in our walk. So, in the order of occurrence, we had:

Humidity = tough to climb the hills, sweat, tough to drink enough, more sweat, and eventually heat rash 😡

Mud from the Storm = wet clay build up on the bottom of our shoes and a very slippery path - so slippery a Camino friend fell and was covered in mud on one whole side of her body and face. She felt the mud would be good for her skin. 😂

A Surprise = An Italian couple serving cold drinks and snacks along the path just when we were desperately wishing for a cool breeze and a place to just rest.

Bulls = Fiesta in Viana with the Running of the Bulls today! Our hotel room looks down on the end of the run and it seems almost all the residents are dressed in white with red bandannas and sashes.🙂

We had our first croquettes of the trip today 😋😋and bought some wonderful, small bocadillos from some young girls raising money during the fiesta. 3 € for two of them, and it included tiny cups of red wine. 🍷

      Tomorrow, we walk to Navarette.

p.s. I’m going to try adding pictures of some of the people we have met.

    • Day 11 - Los Arcos to Viana - 18km

      9 settembre 2023, Spagna ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

Today felt like a long day again, even though it was only 18km and I started at 6:30am.

It was a rough night of sleep. It was so hot and lots of snorers in the room. I finally broke out the ear plugs and they work well. The only trouble, is I could also not hear myself, so I wasn’t sure if I was being loud with all my moving around.

My plan was to leave around 7, but everyone was already awake at 5:30 and it was impossible to sleep anymore so I decided I might as well get going as well. At 6:30am it is still dark and I wore my headlamp. It was actually quite nice. Just the right temperature and the path was a straight gravel path so easy to navigate. The one downside is all the moths and flies that hang out in front of your face because of the light.

I was at Sansol (7km) before 9am and stopped for the daily Coke Zero and a banana. I didn’t eat the banana, I instead ate the chocolate muffin I had bought yesterday along with the bread I had left over.

I was off again, with a few rest stops and had a bigger stop with a sandwich at a food truck about 5km from the end. I arrived in Viana just after 1pm. I still felt the effects of the sun as if I had been walking all day in the sun. I have to be sure to drink lots of water today, perhaps I am suffering a bit of heat stroke.

I was originally going to go 22km tomorrow, but I have decided to break it up to two days instead. I have a few blisters on my toes that are bothering me a little so giving them a break should be good.

I took a nap this afternoon (I don’t often do that), so maybe that will help. I am in a top bunk today in a room of woman, hopefully I will catch up more on my sleep.

Throwback to 2009 from Julie’s Journal

Today was hell!!! I am in such a bad mood at the moment, I am hoping this beer will help. We were up at 6am as usual and again as usual, I was in a ton of pain. I packed by 6:30 and was down for breakfast. Today was a day for tears. We were off by 7am. Most of the walk today was on gravel roads which was hard because it was kind of boring. …

I convinced Joerg to stop in Torres del Rio and then do the 20km to Logrono tomorrow. I am going to stay in Logrono an extra day. It sounds like Joerg does not want to so it may be where we part. I thought he understood that I wanted to stop once a week. I guess he didn’t. Anyway, we will see. My heart is aching as I love him and I love his company but I cannot keep his pace. I think it is time to let him go.

Well, the rest of the evening was fine. I am determined to get a hotel room tomorrow. We went for a little walk then dinner. We were pretty quiet after the fight we had at the entrance to the hostel. I said something along the lines that tomorrow would be our last day together and he said that was fine as there were lots of other woman on the trail. I then said “That is fine, I have been trying for 10 months now and I give up.”

Anyway, when dinner was complete we were sitting alone and I apologized for not being nice and he apologized as well. After that we were better. Dinner ended about 9pm, we then headed off to bed.

I Viana stop walking. So I did.

      9 giugno 2023, Spagna ⋅ ☁️ 77 °F

I had a reservation and an inclination to walk to Logroño today.

I stopped 10km short because Viana is a cute town and i just haven't been feelin it today.

Also, I remind myself, I am in no hurry!

Instead I had a delicious lunch that took two hours because the waiter had 3x attitude and 0.25x aptitude. It took him 18 minutes (yeah, I timed it) to bring me a fork. Darn it! I shoulda harvested one in Sansol.

But the food was tasty and priced well*. The beer was cold. I enjoyed the people watching. It got a little windy but high 70s and windy is pleasant to me.

After lunch I bumped into Dean and we had another drink. Fun to know people and validating to see that I'm not alone in wanting rest. Today was hilly.

The walk itself was a good chance to be alone with many thoughts.... Today was deep and largely related to how I want to invest my energy.... Professionally, creatively, romantically, and how I want to continue to foster my own personal growth. Good stuff.

Various times today I am reminded that I made a good choice; coming to Spain, stopping for coffee, staying in Viana vs. Logroño... It seems a bit self deprecating but after making many not-so-great choices last year, I feel reassured by clear evidence that I can/do make great choices, too.

My next great choice is probably a nap under a tree near a ruined cathedral.

*Pricing... Many restaurants along The Camino offer a pilgrim's meal. Typically 3 courses (starter, main, dessert) with bread and water or wine, for 10-15€. It's usually hearty fare and euro-large portions. Lovely

Staying in the Albergue Municipal at 9.5€ seems like a clean and comfortable choice
