      Hedgerows and biodiversity day

      After a lovely sleep, today was a long walk over a few hills and along the side of a fast flowing river into Pamplona. We are off to explore shortly. I am feeling a bit stiff, but otherwise, the walk is really enjoyable. There is so much biodiversity here. The hedgerows have about 20 different plants per square meter, and are really beautiful. The section before Pamplona was all honeysuckle and dog roses and smelt lovely.
      We are starting to recognise people, and have met people from all over the world. Lots of Americans, flip flop man fom nz who has walked it 7 times in flip flops, lots of taiwanese and a Peruvian from Cuzco in her local dress including sandals made from rubber tyres. I am going to try to meet someone from all 51 US states and all European countries. We have also made friends with an Australian from Richmond, but there aren't too many English people which suits me.      Lue lisää

      Rest Day Pamplona!

      Day 5 - Rest Day

      We spent a lovely day being tourists in Pamplona. Another hot one so we decided we needed to shop for something cooler to wear...any excuse 💃😉
      Highlight of the day was visiting the bull ring. Great informative self tour, gave good insight into the passion surrounding the sport.
      Very pleased we took the day to explore this beautiful city, however as far as rest days go we failed in that department as we still clocked up over 10k for the day!
      Planning a 6am start for tomorrow as it looks like a tough day with some big hills to climb along the way! Back into it!! 😁      Lue lisää

      Encouraged by the kindness of pilgrims

      Today was a beautiful day - sunny and in the 70s. Everything felt easier with sunshine after two days of rain. The walk was more level today and was a welcome relief from the ascents and descents of the past few days. It was a beautiful walk through different patches of forests and passing by farms and through little villages along the way.

      I walked for a bit with some people I met from Germany and Spain on my second night in the hostel. Their pace ended up being too fast for me, so I lagged behind. My knee started hurting pretty badly so I stopped to try to fashion a compression band out of my buff. I was feeling pretty worn and tired by the time I was getting to the last few miles for the day. As I was walking slowly through one of the little villages before Pamplona, the German man called out my name from a cafe and invited me to sit with them for a coffee. I walked with them the final mile into Pamplona and was grateful for the companionship and not having to focus on finding my way and just following them.

      Pamplona feels like a big city after the tiny villages I’ve been staying in so far. I wandered into the old part of Pamplona to find somewhere to eat and saw some people I met from Ireland sitting at a restaurant outside. They invited me over and I asked if I could join them for dinner. I think the longer I’m on the trail the more kinship there will be with other pilgrims I’ve already met and new people I’ll continue to meet. I’m grateful for the companionship today.      Lue lisää

      The Road to Pamplona

      Zubiri to Pamplona
      Day 4 - 21 km

      We had an early start today as we wanted to get to Pamplona before the 31 degree heat set in. It was a good day walking with all the fellow pilgrims we have met along the way. Our first mission was to find a coffee shop but alas we were either too early or they were closed on Tuesday’s. 😧 We still ambled along past little villages and then into the big metropolis of Pamplona by 1.30pm. Our accommodation is great at Hostel Alho right in the middle of Pamplona and planning a rest day for tomorrow so we can check out the sights. Great night looking around the busy town square with a few wines and our first taste of Paella.Lue lisää

      Made it to Pamplona!

      Day 4 and 5 Pamplona - Had to make up for the easy day before - walked 32 kms from Bizkaretta to Pamplona - with some significant climbs and a serious descent! Luckily I ran into a woman who had done this route before and she knew where to find the elevator that takes you up to the walled city of Pamplona. Saved me about a hundred steps up 😀. Spent 2 days in Pamplona to recover from it!
      Having listened to Hemingways book en route and to the vivid description of the 7 day bull festival I decided to check out the bull ring. They had a self guided tour with photos and videos of the whole process including the famous bull run. I’ve added a video of a small section of their show.      Lue lisää

      Jakobsweg Tag 3

      Heute starteten Michelle und ich gemeinsam. Er ist 70 Jahre alt, kommt aus Frankreich und wohnt in Kanada.

      Er erzählte mir gestern das man hier für 5€ sein Gepäck zur nächsten Unterkunft per Taxi schicken kann.
      Und da ich mir bewusst war, das ich keine weiteren 20 km mit vollem Gepäck schaffen würde nahm ich diesen Service in Anspruch.
      Er lieh mir einen kleinen Rucksack indem ich das nötigste verstauen konnte und dann ging es los.

      Meiner Hüfte ging es (dann Akkupunktur? 🤔) super gut!

      Wir wollten nach ca. 5 km in einem Café Frühstücken, aber dieses war zu. Danach kam keins, dann war wieder alles geschlossen...

      Eigentlich wollte ich nach dem Frühstück alleine weiter laufen...

      Gegen 14.30 Uhr fanden wir auf unserem Weg einen Mann, der gegen eine kleine Spende Obst, Nüsse und Getränke anbot. Und so aßen wir eine Banane, einen Apfel und einpaar Nüsse. Ziemlich spätes Frühstück! 🙈

      Und so liefen wir den ganzen Tag zusammen.

      Die Sonne schien heute und es war sehr warm und so wollten wir unsere Kleidung wechseln. Allerdings gab es unterwegs nicht wirklich eine Möglichkeit dazu...
      Auf so einer langen Reise ist einem nach einiger Zeit manches ziemlich egal, und so zogen wir uns einfach auf dem Weg um 🤷
      Ich zog meine Hose aus um mir meine Short anzuziehen und Michelle wechselte von Pullover zum Hemd.
      Gerade als ich dabei war mir meine Short hoch zu ziehen und er sich sein Hemd zu knöpfte, dachte ich nur bei mir: "Hoffentlich kommt jetzt niemand vorbei!" 😂🙈

      In dieser Pause nutze ich die Gelegenheit um meine Füße zu inspizieren und konnte direkt eine neue Blase begrüßen! 😩🙄
      "Herzlich Willkommen an Bord! Hinsetzen, Klappe halten und bitte möglichst schnell wieder verschwinden! Danke!"

      Als wir Abends in Pamplona ankamen, kaufte ich mir einen kleinen Rucksack und einpaar neue Blasenpflaster.
      Dann organisierte ich den Morgigen Transport für mein Gepäck (denke das ich das noch die nächsten 2-3 Tage machen werde, bis es meinen Füßen besser geht).

      Später gingen wir noch gemeinsam mit John (49, aus Manchester) nach Burger King 😂 und anschließend in eine Bar. Dort tranken wir noch Wein und Bier.

      Wir liefen durch die Gassen in denen hier die Stierläufe stattfinden. Schon ein komisches Gefühl an diesem Ort zu stehen.      Lue lisää

      Walking under the stars

      Started early today, out on the street by 6:00.
      Stopped and appreciated the Spanish stars! Much better day today with the early start, I got my 18km under my belt by 10:40 and have just wandered around Pamplona until I can check in.Lue lisää

      3.5 h train ride to Pamplona

      Fast, 200km per hour train ride. Security and tickets check points before getting to the assign platform. Comfortable ride, not crowded, I would say a class less then Polish Pendolino 😊. Beautiful scenery, some parts reminded me of Wyoming. It was hard to keep focus on outside views due to high speed... Made me feel dizzy 😅. But I cought few pics while we slowed down. One of our stops was definitely another storks country 😍. Rest of our day will post tomorrow, as we have a little time before the bus at noon... We are exhausted now, Tom is soundly sleeping and I'm joining him now, too..

      The Camino Provides

      My feet continue to misbehave. Maybe they are meant to be helping me stay in the moment. Getting fitter was never going to be a walk in the park.

      Last night was the end of my pre-booked accommodation. It is a fine balance on the Camino Frances in September post covid and a holy year. You want the freedom to walk without booking ahead but being slow you want the security of not missing out on a bed and having to walk to the next town.

      I decided to head for Pamplona even though it was a bit further than I thought I could walk. I knew I could get a taxi through the suburbs and then have a full rest day in Pamplona. I wanted a private room, I'm mixing it up between private rooms and albergues. Accommodation was scare but I found a nice looking apartment in the historic centre and decided to spoil myself because I'm worth it. Jody, who at this time was sitting next to me with her feet soaking in the pool, was also searching for two days accommodation in Pamplona. I asked her if she would like to join me in my two bedroom apartment. After contemplating for a while the odds of me being an axe murderer or something similar she said yes. I told her to pay whatever she wanted towards her stay.

      Now I just had to make it to Pamplona. The walk was beautiful again. We followed the river all the way and I spent an hour soaking my feet at a gorgeous spot. Shops were shut or absent so around lunch time I was getting pretty tired and starting to think about how I was going to get a taxi without speaking Spanish. I plodded into a picnic area at the bottom of a big hill and sat down for another rest. There was a pilgrim lying on a picnic bench looking exhausted. We had passed each other a few times but never spoken more than a buen Camino. I asked him how he was and he said he had just figured out how to get a taxi into town. Needless to say, we shared that taxi and Thomas from Germany would not let me pay a cent.

      At three o'clock I meet Jody at the entrance to our Bnb and we scored the best Pamplona apartment we both could have imagined. Jody insisted on paying for half of it as well. We both love it so much we are now buying one together.

      Pamplona

      😱 busture i Pamplona! Hold på hat og briller. Jo jo... Der er ståpladser i bussen, men det er da kun for vovehalse. Og tidsplaner.... Jo jo.... De findes da også, men til hvad???? 😂
      Vi kom forbi tyrefægter-arenaen og forventede måske at det var en fantastisk bygninger. Måske var den smuk indefra, men udvendig en den lidt kedelig. Der er tyrefægtning hele denne uge og ligesom tyreløb er det bestemt ikke noget for mig.
      Faktisk havde vi store forventninger til Pamplona og så heldigvis også mange smukke gader og historiske bygninger. Men generelt syntes vi at byen var lidt en flad fornemmelse.
      Gaderne bærer præg af at de bliver brugt til tyreløb, der er ikke noget i 2 meters højde der ikke kan flyttes.
      Der var 2 stjerneformede fæstninger. Den ene indrammer den gamle bydel på smukkeste vis. Den anden er omdannet til en grøn oase mit i beton byggeriet.
      Midt i centrum ligger en kæmpe park, stor og smuk. Med legepladser, søer, smukke træer og blomster. Og en lille cafe. Dejligt sted at holde middagspause. Han glemte at lave vores mad, så vi fik en gratis øl 🍻. Men da maden endelig kom, smagte det bare ekstra godt.
      Camino de Santiago går gennem byen, så vi så flere vandrere med tunge ben.
      Aftensmad, blev til en snack i den flotteste bar/ restaurant. Der hænger skinker i hele barens længde.      Lue lisää
