      Isla Christina

      Nach langem Überlegen und abwägen, wie wir mit den täglichen Hiobsbotschaften zum Corona-Virus umgehen, haben wir nun entschieden, die Tour fortzusetzen und quer durch Andalusien, vorbei an Sevilla in Richtung Portugal zu fahren. Die Landschaft war ganz anders als erwartet, von den felsigen Küsten ging es stets bergauf und dann wurde die Landschaft fast eben. Unendliche Weiten und Olivenbäume in unendlichen Mengen. Die Temperaturen waren heute mit 32 Grad schon heftig. Sevilla haben wir nach 14 Uhr erreicht und somit auch den "Feierabendverkehr" voll miterlebt 😉
      Aber alles ging gut und als es wieder ruhiger wurde, suchten wir eine Einkaufsmöglichkeit, da unser Wohnmobil fast leer war. Nachdem der Großeinkauf verstaut war, gab es noch ein Leckerli zum Kaffee und wir machten "Lagebesprechung" Das Ergebnis war, das wir noch einmal in Spanien, kurz vor der portugiesischen Grenze Station machen. Also ASCI befragt, Platz zwischen Meer und Salinen ausgesucht und hin gefahren.
      Kurz vorm Ziel haben wir viele Störche gesehen, die hier auf den Strommasten Rast machten. Offensichtlich sind sie schon auf dem Weg in den Norden und bringen den Sommer mit. 🤷
      Der Platz ist ein Naturplatz mit viel Pinien, die wir aber angesichts der Temperaturen gut gebrauchen könnten 😉      Lue lisää

      Kids in a sweet shop!

      The shops often shut at 1pm and open again at 5 pm, so we went into town this morning so I could buy some material, and we looked around the bazaars. So we got lots of bits and bobs, fabric, art and craft stuff, braids, beads, make-up, and came home with an almost 'grown-up' equivalent of a 'Claires Accessories' stash!
      I think we maybe (or I did anyway) missed out on some stage of our development. 😉
      But come to think of it, Claire's Accessories didn't exist when I was growing up. Fred Aldous was the closest thing to it.

      30th night at Isla Cristina

      So a fairly lazy day here before we move on tomorrow. Went down to the beach to collect my stash ... the pieces of pot I had 'planked' yesterday. I thought there was an 80% chance they'd still be there and John thought a 100%.
      They'd gone! 😞😠😩. We're clearly not the only ones who like these things. One piece had a J on it, and I'd walked all the way up to the restaurant and back with it. Hey ho. But there was still another piece which I'd hidden nearby, plus John had found a new piece with lettering on today.
      We said a brief goodbye to the lovely Dutch couple, Harda and Arna, who were in the middle of preparing food for six people. 'Ohh rayt' he said in his Scottish accent when we said we're off tomorrow. They showed us inside their camper, built by a boatbuilder to a very high standard with blinds built in to the cab and the awning is made of pillars with air in. I.e. a structure of inflatable pipes, which were rock hard.
      We showered and went out for a quick shop at Lidl before tucking into a meal at Casa Pedros. Only to find it had no diners, just drinkers. We didn't want a repeat of last time we tried to eat there, so we came home and ate the rest of our mojama tuna.
      John is a font of knowledge of the makes and cost and pros and cons of all the campers that come and go on site.

      Cadiz und Isla Christina

      Den Vormittag haben wir sehr gemütlich mit Kaffee auf dem Teppich am Bus verbracht und der Plan für den Tag geschmiedet: Stadtbesuch und dann bis zur portugiesischen Grenze fahren.
      In der kleinen Hafenstadt Cádiz wurden tolle Straßennamen entdeckt und Flo hat aus freien Stücken eine riesige Fischplatte bestellt. Lili hat sich gefreut und Flo hat bereut… so viele komplette Fische mit Kopf und Gräten und dazu noch ganz viel frittierter Oktopus, das hatte er sich anders vorgestellt.
      Der schöne Ort war schnell umrundet und erkundet und so düsten wir weiter zu einem Platz an der Isla Christina, an dem wir schon Anfang März standen. Zum Glück kannten wir uns aus und sind mit den letzten Sonnenstrahlen schnurstracks an allen anderen Vans vorbei zu unserem einsamen Platz im Sand gefahren. Sundowner in den Dünen und sehr spätes Dinner im Nüsschen - wir haben uns schnell wieder an die spanischen Gepflogenheiten gewöhnt 😅
      Am nächsten Morgen wollte Flo trotz spiegelglatter See aufs neue Brett. Also hieß es Paddeln üben und der Lili somit einen entspannten Vormittag mit Tagebuch schreiben am Strand bescheren.      Lue lisää

      Sea calling again

      It's John's fault ... he said he was going down to see the beach at a different time of day with the tide out. So I couldn't resist joining him for a chance to paddle. John stayed dry today. He found a strange thing on the shoreline. We can't find what it is.
      The plovers attracted me again. I love the way they skirt around the waves. Running away around the edge as they break and speedily grabbing their chances for food as the waves recede. Simple delights.
      Back along a path through the trees today. Hey, we know how to ring the changes.      Lue lisää

      Beach saunter, lazy day

      Fairly lazy saunter along the beach towards the bridge and back along the boardwalk, just 3.5 miles. The shells are so beautiful and the plovers are still racing the waves. John photographed a beetle and looked it up. Seems to be from the Brachycerus family.
      I forgot to bring a sunhat, so improvised with a scarf to protect my head and hair a little.
      Finished my necklace with a dab of nail varnish. John took the van to fill up and empty water.
      I tried some Spanish and finally learnt how to ask for the bill but have already forgotten, so I'm recording a screenshot on here.

      Seashore / seafood

      A full day of walking a full 8 miles up and down the beach, admiring shells, watching plovers, admiring seagulls (they were just standing facing Mecca waiting for something) plus avoiding dead ray fish, birds and other creatures.
      We stopped for a break at 'El Patio' fish restaurant and ordered prawn fritters and anchovies in a tempura batter. Thank you Google Lens, translate! Mind you, it was only after my visit to the ladies that I could use it to discover that they wanted me to knock before entering as the lock didn't work.
      When I ordered my coffee, I forgot to mention or to mime 'large', so I was presented with a mere thimble of very strong coffee, even though it was 'decafinado', I'm sure it spurred me on for our return journey.
      We tried taking some videos. I am not really cut out to work for David Attenborough but good for memories of plovers, one of my dad's favourite birds, and fast becoming mine too (along with kingfishers of course). The ones today were Kentish plovers, not ringed plovers, as he'd shown me in the Hebrides. I love the way they run fast as can be across the sand. It's as if their legs are made of wheels.       Tag 41 - Isla Cristina

      Endlich sind die spanischen Osterferien vorbei.
      Heute Vormittag gab es noch ein paar Besorgungen zu machen.
      Und dann ging es für uns an den schönen Strand 🏖️. Sehr weitläufig, leicht abfallend und mit vielen tollen Muscheln 🐚 und Austern 🦪 im Sand.
      Ok. Es war schon arg windig, aber voll schön mit der Sonne ☀️
      Das Wasser ist zwar nicht ganz so schön blau, wie an manchem Beach in Asien, aber auf jeden Fall eine Reise wert. Irgendwann geht es zurück zum Platz ca. 2 Fahrrad Minuten 👍🏼.
      Mal schauen, was uns der Abend heute noch so bringt.
      Ein köstliches Abendessen von Rudi gekocht 😋😋 und ein weiterer Erfahrungsaustausch mit unseren netten Münsterländischen Platznachbarn… vielleicht mit einem kalten TINTO DE VERANO.      Lue lisää

      Staying ... Isla Christina

      I've just written at length about our day and restaurant experience, then lost the lot. So ... nutshell:
      Walk along beach and paddle, then into town to eat at Casa Pedros.
      A local downmarket, no frills type pavement restaurant with a rather brusque, make-your-mind-up waiter, but kinda friendly too. Lots of interesting characters there. We had good food and came home with a 2k box of strawberries for €5. John had taken pity on the guy who'd come to our table and we declined. Then a nearby table haggled him down to €4, and John thought it mean as €5 was a good and fair price. So called him back and said "yes please".
      The box weighed a bit less by the time we got home. 😉
      Strangely it was really hard to get the bill from the restaurant. There was a youngish guy kept singing, I think to do with carnival as they have contests.
      We weighed up our choices, the weather, the warmth and made a decision to stay another week. Then, as you can get 30 nights for the price of 20, we've paid for 20 and will decide later re how long to stay. A bonus is there's a carnival parade on Sunday and as we missed the first one by an hour or so, we're rather pleased to get a 2nd chance.      Lue lisää

      3 Tage am Meer

      Wir haben den Liedtext von AnnenMayKantereit beherzigt und sind drei Tage am Meer geblieben. Es waren für uns erholsame Tage, schon alleine weil wir nicht täglich den Camper startklar machen und uns nicht auf irgendetwas Neues einstellen mussten. Sich die Meerluft um die Nase wehen lassen, am Strand aufgrund der Fülle die schönsten Muscheln aussuchen und Sandburgen bauen. So haben die Tage sich gefüllt.
      Greta hat hier auf dem Campingplatz Carlo und Titus (2 deutsche Jungs) kennengelernt und war die meiste Zeit mit ihnen stromern. Für Greta haben die Tage hier eindeutig zu wenig Stunden, so gerne und so viel spielt sie mit den beiden.
      Marcus und ich haben heute die kleine Freiheit genossen, alleine das Naturschutzgebiet Paraje Natural de las Marismas de Isla Cristina und den Fischerort zu erkunden. Da der Ort für die Verarbeitung von gesalzenen Fisch und Thunfisch bekannt ist, haben wir diesen in einer - nun ja - religiös angehauchten Standbar auch gleich probieren müssen. Mit diesem Segen war der Fisch natürlich delicioso 😋.      Lue lisää
