      Cadavedo to Luarca

      1. september 2022, Spania ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

We wake to a beautiful day; the sun is shining, the birds are singing, and our shoes have dried out overnight. We hit the trail just before 10am walking on quite country roads that lead us through quite country towns. We break at a playground and enjoy a mid-morning snack then decide to have a go on the swings and other equipment at the park, it's nice to tap into my inner child, remembering what it's like to be a kid, swinging on a swing with the wind in my hair, building momentum, getting higher and higher. We then kick on, I am absolutely loving this Camino, the constant up and downs are challenging, but I think I am getting used to it, the countryside is so beautiful, the trails we walk on, the quite paths alongside rivers, the different shades of green we see throughout our days, the sound of the birds every morning as we walk, the passing of fellow pilgrims and locals, mostly with a smile and a 'Buen Camino', the barking dogs of all shapes and sizes, protective as we walk past their yards, the Camino markers and yellow arrows thoughtfully spaced, pointing us in the direction of our final destination, there is just so much to enjoy and appreciate out here on trail. I feel like I have stepped back in time, life seems simple, back to basics without all the distractions and constant grind that has become daily life. I truly think this is the main reason I feel an enormous pull of talking, planning & walking Caminos, for me it provides a reset of mind, body and soul. We finally get to the outskirts of Luarca, we are positioned above the town and the view from up here is stunning, Luarca is picture-perfect! It is quite a steep descent down into the town with many steps, this has been the case with many coastal villages, towns and cities along this Camino. We locate our hotel, book in then go exploring. Whilst we are out and about, we decide to find our bus stop ready for our trip to Santiago de Compostela tomorrow. We are going to meet up with George and his family, I can't wait to meet them & hear all about their Porto Camino.Les mer

      131. Etappe: Luarca

      19. november 2018, Spania ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

      Evening in Luarca

      7. juli 2019, Spania ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

After walking back to my room to put on pants and a jacket as it was quite cool this evening with a breeze - I walked along harbor and the dozens of restaurants with signs that dinner is served at 8:30. So funny. In Folsom it is challenge to find food after Yoga at 8:45. Here it is a challenge to find food before 8:30. I headed to an outdoor cafe and had a cafe con leche and watched the world go by. I then ordered another. Then switched to Vino Tinto as I was pretty chill. Then another. Finally decided I should get some food around 10:45. I asked for my bill. $5 euros. I told him I think he forgot to charge me for something. He printed a tag. 2 wine 2 coffee - 5 euros. I was expecting at least a $20 tab. Walking back was too lazy to sit for dinner. Next to the hotel was a small hole in the wall to go shop. I got some pasta and a drink to take back to my room for $4 euro. He asked if I was a pilgrim and said he would give me extra for my important journey to make me strong.Les mer

    • One day on the Norte

      28. juni 2019, Spania ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

While most of Europe, and the rest of Spain, are sweltering under a deadly heat wave, were still enjoying sunny skies and temperatures in the low 60s to mid 70s. Apparently the mountains we’ve been skirting for many days are holding back the heat wave.

We had very little elevation change in today’s walk from Cadavedo to Luarca, which was most welcome to our legs! Yesterday we went down and up 7 times, about 70-100 meters each time.

Fans of the Camino like to say, “The Camino provides,” meaning that what a pilgrim needs (not wants!) will somehow appear. It’s become kind of a joke. But sometimes it seems to be true. This morning, as we came to a yellow arrow showing a turn off our road, an older lady appeared and motioned for us to go a different way. That way would be much shorter, less climbing, go through that overpass, turn right, follow the signs... all of which turned out to be a great trail, past an old church and cemetery.

Here are some pics that will show you what our day was like —

Camino Del Norte - Day 19

      28. juni 2017, Spania ⋅ 🌬 17 °C

Camino Del Norte - Day 19

      Soto De Luna to Luarca
      Distance 35.5km (10 hours)
      Total ascent 370m

Our little band of peregrinos set off from the Albergue at 6.30am. My international band consisted three Italians, one Northern Ireland , a German and me.
The kind hospilardo gave us a complex briefing the night before on the confusing fechas (yellow arrows) and the best route to take. Unfortunately, some people didn't listen and then got angry because the hospilardo got peeved off repeating himself.
We quickly set off up into the hills and onto the coastal route. Although, it has rained overnight and there were very dark clouds on the horizon, our first few hours were stunning on the Camino. We chatted away as we made our way up and down ancient sunken lanes, through eucalyptus forests and along lane ways. Locals greeted us with waves, beeping car horns and waving insanely at us.
We stopped briefly for breakfast around 9.30am. We had already been walking for 3 hours. The weather took a turn. It was either absolutely glorious or lashing with rain.
En route, we stopped near a cliff top view point called Novellana. It was stunning. Everyone's spirit just lifted. It was incredible. Here we were, a small group of peregrinos who threw themselves into this adventure and we sharing this wonderful experience. Little did we know that this was change......
We eventually arrived in a town called Cadavedo around midday after walking 20km but descending/ascending into numerous stunning bays and back up to the minor roads. We practically raided a little grocery store for food and drink while we waited for Nicol (Generalismo) to arrive. Unfortunately, he developed a hip pain and could no longer carry on. Gerry from Northern Ireland also decided to call it a day. We said our farewells in the Albergue and carried on. Our little intrepid group now down to four.
The weather took a real turn for the worse. It was now pocho time as rain storms rushed in from the Bay of Biscay. We had to shelter behind trees because of the driving rain.
We eventually arrived in a small fishing town called Luarca. It is a stunning location. We were lucky enough to get the few remaining bed in the Albergue. Admin completed, we were out immediately for tea and cake (no medals) and to buy food for the trail tomorrow.

I hope you enjoy today's pictures. It was probably my best day on the Camino in some many ways. I am only sorry to say goodbye to some great people.
