Exploring the Lake Geneva Shoreline with Richie

Took the train around to Montreaux (same montreaux as "smoke on the water"). Took a cable train up to Roche's de Naye, at 2000m elevation could see everything, including Switzerland's 3 biggest mountains (though they looked tiny from a distance). Had a walk along the water edge in Montreaux and visited the Freddie Mercury statue and Queen Museum.

Fun fact of the day: in the Alps there are heaps of empty shacks for hikers to stay in if they are stuck in the wilderness overnight.Read more

Said goodbye to Izzy and got on the bike heading to Grindelwald. On Izzy’s recommendation I paused at Lavaux and Vevey before heading to Montreux to check out Freddie Mercury’s statue. Queen had a history at Montreux. They owned a studio at the casino there and it now houses a Queen exhibition. The casino was the inspiration for the song Smoke on the Water when it caught fire and the smoke billowed down onto the Lake.Read more

Ein lang gehegter Wunsch geht in Erfüllung. Ein Konzert der Blues Legende Buddy Guy - musste der Gute erst 87 werden bis ich ihn sehe😬
Statt findet das ganze auf dem Montreux Jazz Festival, dass ein spitzenmässiges und sehr breit gefächertes Programm hat. Und zu allem Glück steht auch noch Joe Bonamassa auf der Setlist. Besser geht es wohl kaum ☺️. Der nächste Wunsch wird auch noch erfüllt, die beiden spielen zusammen einen Song. Pipi in den Augen vor Glück 🥲
Das Festival ist eine tolle Veranstaltung, in einer traumhaften Umgebung. Leider sind die Preise auch traumhaft hoch - die spinnen die Schweizer 😂.
Viele Konzerte aufstrebender Talente „for Free“, lecker Streetfood aus der ganzen Welt (hatte tibetanisch 😋), gute Getränke und eine spitzen Atmosphäre (auch wenn es sehr voll war).
Das Programm sollte man im Auge behalten😉Read more

Wenn du es eilig hast, geh langsam!

Beim Blick auf den Kalender mussten wir ernüchternd feststellen, dass uns gar nicht mehr so viel Zeit bis zur Rückkehr nach Hamburg blieb. Die Wettervorhersage mit anhaltenden Temperaturen um die 30 Grad in Frankreich und Italien machten allerdings wenig Lust auf lange Autofahrten, um wie geplant, auf unserer Tour bis ans Meer zu gelangen. Die Tage am Thuner See hatten uns mal wieder gelehrt, wie wenig man auf einer Reise mit einem Baby braucht, um wunschlos glücklich zu sein und jeden Tag Erholung zu erleben. Daher beschlossen wir, dem idyllischen Genfer See mehr Aufmerksamkeit zu widmen und legten statt dem ursprünglichen Tagesausflug nach Genf einige Zwischenstopps ein, um das Flair der Schweizer Rivera richtig genießen zu können.
So strandeten wir nach unserem Aufbruch vom Thuner See direkt am östlichen Zipfel des Genfer Sees in Montreaux. Mit Blick auf die Alpen und das Chalet Chillon flanierten wir entlang der Uferpromenade dieser wunderschönen, kleinen Seestadt. Zwischendurch gab es Glace für 4 CHF pro Kugel und immer mal eine Abkühlung im Genfer See. Es überrascht uns nicht, dass Queen hier 6 Alben produzierte und sich Freddy ausgesprochen wohl fühlte. Auf den Spuren von Freddie Mercury

Benni hat heute einen ganz berühmten Mann getroffen. Na ja, zumindest seine Statue. Der Megastar hat sich einst in Montreux niedergelassen. Die Stadt liegt genau gegenüber von Genf. Sie ist viel kleiner, hat aber die gewaltige Kulisse der französischen Alpen im Hintergrund. Bei einer Schiffsfahrt kann man das ganz in Ruhe auf sich wirken lassen. Dies war unser letzter Tag auf unserer Reise bevor es wieder nach Hause geht. Es war ein schöner Abschluss für alle.Read more

Une baignade à Montreux !

Quai des fleurs, c'est le nom donné à la promenade bord du Léman à Montreux. C'est plus qu'un nom, c'est juste incroyable l'enchaînement de tableaux floraux ponctués d'arbres majestueux.
Nous avons trouvé la plage, les derniers rayons de soleil sur le Léman magique avec ses oiseaux mais aussi ses algues ! Et ses courants d'eaux....moins chaudes.Read more

Beautiful lakeside village

Home of the Queen museum & statue of Freddie Mercury. Queen produced their last albums here.

Enjoyed exploring the life of Charlie Chaplin ~ visited his home & beautiful gardens in Vevey. A surprising highlight of the trip!

Lake Geneva Views at Montreaux

Lake Geneva, (Lac Leman to the French), is the largest lake in either Switzerland or France. This side of the lake has miles of vineyards along the hillsides leading down to the lake. There are ferries as well as pleasure cruises on a steamer.

Along the shore is 400 year old Chillon Castle on a small island next to the shore.Read more

Basel to Montreux

Today marks the first day of our journey overland all the way to Australia. Even though we left the UK a few weeks ago, it’s all only starting to feel real now as we leave my dads house near Basel. Our first day takes us all the way to Lake Geneva, where we stop in Montreux to have a walk along the shore of the lake. What a lovely city! It’s so calm and beautiful and since it’s a Monday there’s barely anyone around as well. After quite a long walk we make our way to camping Moratel in the small town of Cully where we set up directly on the shore of the lake and with a temperature of 18 degrees we have the perfect scenery to end our first day.Read more

Day 50 - Geneva to Montreux, 58 miles

50 days up and what an experience it's been so far and still plenty to see and do!!!

Day 50 was a mixed bag (quite literally) on the bike today. Great ride round Lake Geneva to the very affluent area of Montreux. Love riding at weekends as you really see the small towns and villages in all their glory as everywhere seems to have something on. Today there was a 1920's festival (stayed and watched the show for a bit, can't think why!!), an antique markets, a car show, a fun fair and lots more little events and markets. Also amazing seeing some of the houses around Lake Geneva, some serious money in this little country. Can see why UEFA headquarters have their headquarters nestled on the lake here.

Didn't really get a good view of the mountains around the lake until the evening when the clouds cleared in Montreux and wow what a setting. Very jealous of the one guy out on his boat.

The mixed bag part of the day was catching one of my panniers on a broken road barrier and ripping it off the rack and breaking the catch on the bag. After a few choice words shouted across the lake I needed to work out how to fix this as this was going to be a big issue with no way of hooking the pannier back on bike. Luckily due to a bit of advice given to me almost in passing by a guy in a bike shop back in London I remembered I'd packed some cable ties. Those little bits of plastic saved the day and with pannier now (permanently) back on the bike I was able to crack on.Read more
