      Seats, Cells, and Italy for Lunch

      I wake up early and go find myself a bench with a view of the Matterhorn for breakfast. I sit for hours before I eventually tear myself away to go get packed and head for my train. I’ll admit I’m sad to leave the magic of Zermatt behind… until I realise I’d need to take out a mortgage to buy lunch in a cafe and that point I high tail it out of there.

      My base for the rest of my time in Switzerland is Chur (pronounced ‘whoor’ apparently. I kid you not) in the East of the country. At this point I have no idea which language I’m supposed to be speaking and have resorted to some weird mix of French, German and Italian, none of which is convincing anyone. Switzerland has 4 official languages German, French, Italian and a wonderful little language called Romansh which has 6 different dialects despite being spoken by less than 40,000 people. My journey for the next couple of days has me weaving in and out of Romansh territory although sadly it’s hard to find any sources to learn enough of the language to get by.

      After one of the most scenic train journeys I’ve ever taken, I spend my night in the cells of Chur’s former prison, now converted into the town’s newest hostel. A friend who grew up in the region has armed me with itineraries and things to do and so I spend the next few days hopping on and off train platforms and hanging out of train windows with a camera in hand. The alpine air and smell of pine making me smile. I take the Glacier Express route across the length of Switzerland and the Bernina Express route down to Italy for a quick bit of lunch (see note about lunch in Switzerland requiring a loan 😂) before once again hanging out a window. It’s a beautiful introduction to Switzerland and one that has me absolutely head over heels for the country.      Les mer

      Hinauf zur Sulzfluh

      Auf der Hütte werden wir übernachten. Aber zuvor wollen wir noch auf die Sulzfluh steigen. Wir lassen die Rucksäcke zurück und nehmen nur das Nötigste mit.

      Start kurz nach 1. Es geht gleich steil hinauf. Danach einige Zeit über ein Felsplattenplateau. Angenehm zu gehen. Dann steigt der Weg wieder steil an. Hardy und Rainer ziehen davon. Mir wird seltsam. Die Sulzfluh rückt immer näher. Dann folgt der letzte Anstieg. Steil. Unwegsam. Man muss nicht klettern benötigt aber bisweilen die Hände für den Aufstieg. Ich lasse Trinkflasche und Stöcke zurück. Mir wird zunehmend unwohl und schwindelig. Auf die letzten Meter will ich aber auch nicht aufgeben. Mit einiger Mühe erreiche ich gegen 15:30 den Gipfel auf 2800m an der Grenze zur Schweiz. Rainer und Hardy warten schon.

      Über die Alpen - Albulapass

      Und dann war es soweit: das, je nach Wind, recht entspannte Fahren flussaufwärts hatte ein Ende. Wir mussten irgendwie über die Alpen. Dafür hatten wir uns den Albulapass vorgenommen, der weniger befahren schien als andere namhaftere Pässe. Als Verstärkung kam unsere Nichte Helena in die Equipe, die vor dem Studium noch gut Zeit für sowas hat.

      Sie hat die Strampelei bergauf hier aus ihrer Perspektive geschildert:

      Am Tag nach meiner Ankunft in Chur (bei der wir erschreckend feststellen mussten, dass die Beiden mir ein Zelt ohne Gestänge mitgegeben haben und wir deshalb kurzfristig mit Bambus, Haselnussästen und Seilen improvisieren mussten) ging es in Richtung Albulapass.

      Das hieß für uns circa 2000 Höhenmeter in 2 Tagen, die durch malerische Bergdörfer wie Bergün oder vorbei an wunderschönen Bergseen führten. Aber auch die zum Teil endlos wirkende Passstraße zu überwinden.

      Nach einer Übernachtung mitten in der Natur auf 1700 Höhenmetern (bei der ich gefühlt erfroren bin😂), erreichten wir am 2. Tag die Passhöhe (2315m) und belohnten uns mit einem kühlen Getränk im Berggasthof Hospiz Albula.

      Der anstrengende Teil war geschafft, wir waren alle etwas erschöpft, aber stolz und dann kam endlich die langersehnte Abfahrt ins Engadin, bei der wir einen atemberaubenden Ausblick über das Tal hatten. Der Albulapass war abschließend gesehen jede Anstrengung wert. Unser Stopp für die nächste Nacht war 20 Kilometer weiter in Morteratsch und wir mussten lernen, dass größtenteils flach bei Google Maps leider doch noch einige Höhenmeter beinhaltet 😂.      Les mer

      Auf den Spuren vom Glacier Express

      Nach einer regnerischen und kühlen Nacht (4 Grad) auf dem Furka Pass und einer ca. einstündigen Morgenwanderung ging es die enge Passstraße runter.
      Ab Andermatt sind wir dann dem Streckenverlauf des Glacier-Expresses hinauf zum Oberalppass und weiter zur Rheinschlucht gefolgt. Diese kann man leider nur einmal ganz kurz während der Fahrt sehen. Hier fährt der Zug die schönere Strecke. Zu Fuß kann man wohl auch einige schöne Aussichtspunkte erreichen.
      Gelandet bin ich dann auf einem schönen Stellplatz mit traumhafter Aussicht in der Nähe von Thusis.
      Von hier aus gibt es Morgen drei Optionen: 1. Diavolezza - Bernina Pass und dann weiter nach Italien.
      2. Lugano und von dort aus Richtung Italien oder 3. Richtung Lichtenstein und weiter nach Österreich.
      Entscheidung fällt spontan.      Les mer

      Wiwo-Spiegel auf der Autobahn verloren und kein Standstteifen vorhanden. Mussten bis zum nächsten Parkplatz und auch noch durch einen Tunnel fahren, abkoppeln und nun fährt Oli mit PKW zurück, um den Spiegel zu finden.
      Fuck, fuck, fuck!

      ...provisirisch...
      Wir werden offensichtlich einen Campinghändler aufsuchen und einen neuen Spiegel kaufen. Vorerst geht es unter italienischen Verhältnissen weiter.      Les mer

      Übern Reschenpass nach Samnaun

      Wer kennt ihn nicht den Film „Und täglich grüßt das Murmeltier“. Daran denken wir meistens wenn wir in Südtirol unterwegs sind und über den Reschenpass fahren. Natürlich erleben wir nicht jeden Tag das Gleiche, aber immer wenn wir dort fahren machen wir die gleichen Dinge:
      Äpfel kaufen beim Bauern, Bozen und Meran auslassen müssen mangels Parkplatz, in der Forst-Brauerei ein Pause machen, übernachten auf einem Stellplatz bei „Camping am See“ in Sankt Valentin auf der Haide, lecker essen und trinken in deren Restaurant. Am nächsten Morgen frische Vinschgauer kaufen zum Frühstück und in Graun am Reschensee einen Fotostopp an der versunkenen Kirche machen. Danach hoch nach Samnaun in das Schweizer Alpendorf. Der „zollfreie“ Ort liegt auf 1850 Metern im schönen Engadin. Hier wird günstig getankt, die tolle Bergwelt bewundert, in der Sonne relaxt und der Spirituosenvorrat wieder aufgefüllt.
      Eine geile Zeit für Genussmenschen wie uns. 🥳      Les mer

      A Frosty Morning Welcome

      Our journey to St. Moritz in the enchanting Engadin region began with a late arrival, but it was the next morning that truly marked the beginning of our holiday. I awoke to a magical sight – a gentle dusting of snow had fallen during the night. It was a tantalizing preview of the adventures that lay ahead.

      While the world outside was still cloaked in dawn's embrace, I decided to embark on a quiet morning adventure with Awen, our loyal Border Collie. Together, we trekked to the breathtaking Laj Stalej da Staz, hoping to capture the essence of this serene landscape at sunrise. The moment the first light touched the Engadin valley, we were treated to a panorama that took our breath away. Wisps of fog danced gracefully over the valley, while the trees showcased their vibrant autumn hues. The recent snowfall had adorned the landscape with a delicate white veil, creating a captivating contrast with the warm autumn tones.

      Later in the afternoon we decided to take in the snowy wonderland at Muottas Muragl, a destination known for its stunning panoramic views. Awen and Nessy, our two faithful Border Collies, eagerly joined us on this snowy adventure. The ascent to Muottas Muragl was an experience in itself, with the pristine surroundings and the soft crunch of fresh snow beneath our feet.

      Upon reaching the summit, our senses were overwhelmed by the awe-inspiring vistas that stretched before us. The Engadin valley, framed by snow-dusted peaks, seemed like a picture from a postcard. The crisp, clean air invigorated us, and we couldn't resist building a snowman with the dogs, their energy and excitement infectious.

      After a memorable day exploring Muottas Muragl, we made our way back to our cozy apartment, eager to warm up and relive the highlights of our day.      Les mer

      Capturing the Beauty of Lake Sils

      Our journey continued with a leisurely stroll along the shores of Lake Sils, a place that had already captured our hearts earlier in the week. However, today was different; the elements were in constant motion. The brisk wind played a symphony with the rustling leaves, and the everchanging sky painted a dynamic backdrop to our walk.

      The rapid shifts in weather and light provided a unique opportunity for photography. The play of clouds and sunlight, combined with the steady breeze, lent themselves to capturing breathtaking long-exposure images of the lake. Each frame told a story of the lake's mercurial nature, transforming from serene to dramatic in a matter of minutes.
