      A village hike

      We had such a good night’s sleep and woke up feeling refreshed and ready for the day ahead. We had a 7.45am breakfast ahead of an 8.30am hike and village visit. Breakfast was African doughnuts with syrup and bananas – good for me, but Mark only had coffee!

      At 8.30, our local guide, Steve, arrived to lead us on our walk. Only one of the group opted not to go. We had been told it would be 12 kilometres, and it had been described as a ‘mild hike’! In reality, it turned out to be 16.8 kilometres with lots of steep slopes to negotiate. We did it, but Mark was struggling with the pain in his leg. Had we known it was so long, we would probably have opted out. Having said that, it was enjoyable.

      Steve proved to be a good guide, particularly when it came to the flora and fauna of the area. The Usambara Mountains are sometimes referred to as the ‘Galapagos of Africa’ because of the number of unique species found here. We certainly spotted a number of different chameleons that are not found anywhere else on earth. Steve was also very knowledgeable about the huge variety of trees we were seeing, both the indigenous ones and those introduced by colonials.

      Historically, the Usambara Mountains were inhabited by Bantu, Shambaa, and Maasai people, but in the eighteenth century, a Shambaa kingdom was founded by Mbegha. The kingdom eventually fell apart after a succession struggle in 1862. German colonists settled in the area which was to become German East Africa, and after World War I, it became part of the British mandated territory of Tanganyika.

      We hiked up to the Irente viewpoint, named after a German lady who lived in the area in the 1800s. She farmed 200 hectares in the mountains. When she died, she left the land to the Lutheran Church, who set up several schools in her name.

      The views were spectacular!! I managed to fall over. Luckily, I fell to the right. Had I fallen to the left, I could have toppled off the cliff top and fallen 1500 metres to my certain death!!

      We walked through stunning landscapes, where every square metre was planted with fruit and vegetables. Being a Sunday, we saw church services going on, as well as Muslim ceremonies and festivals. It was lovely to see the Christian ladies dressed in their Sunday best and the Muslim ladies in their colourful hijabs. The bright patterns contrasted perfectly with the vivid green foliage of the surroundings. We also walked through a pine forest that seemed incongruous compared to everywhere else.       Usambara-Berge: Wazungu im Grünen

      Nach 12 Tagen an der Küste Tansanias heißt es nun für uns: Tschüss Meer, tschüss Stadt, hallooooo Berge!
      Nur sechs Stunden Fahrt mit dem Bus (197 km) trennen uns vom Bergglück in den Usambara-Bergen.

      Glücklicherweise trafen wir an unserem letzten Tag in Tanga zufällig einen Bekannten, der uns einen Bergführer für die Usambara-Berge empfehlen konnte.
      Unsere dreitägige, geführte Wanderung bekamen wir so für einen unschlagbaren Preis und unser Guide Said war wirklich fantastisch. Er hat möglich gemacht, dass wir uns spontan einer bereits laufenden Wanderung anschließen, sodass wir nach unser langen Busfahrt direkt von seinem Fahrer empfangen und zum Treffpunkt gefahren wurden. Hier lernten wir den anderen Reisenden kennen: Duncan, einen jungen Anwalt aus Australien.
      Außerdem stellen wir fest: Okay, hier in den Bergen ist es kalt. Bei abends um die 14 Grad sind Fleece und Jacke angesagt.

      Pro Tag legten wir etwa 20 km zurück. Es ging durch Wälder, Dörfer und Felder und wir werden immer wieder mit einem fantastischen Ausblick belohnt. Said ist in den Bergen aufgewachsen und erzählt uns viel über die Pflanzen, Tiere und Menschen vor Ort.

      Der hier ansässige Stamm der Shambaa lebt vor allem vom Gemüseanbau. Monokulturen und Pestizide sucht man vergebens, hier wird stattdessen in alter Tradition ökologisch und nachhaltig auf kleinen Feldern in Mischkulturen angebaut. Verkauft wird das Gemüse dennoch im ganzen Land - hier kann sich Deutschland eine Scheibe abschneiden, finden wir und sind begeistert davon, wie die Menschen hier MIT ihrer Umgebung leben anstatt diese auszubeuten.

      Während wir durch die Landschaft wandern, hallen uns ständig die Rufe von Kindern entgegen: "Wazungu! Wazungu!". Übersetzen kann man Wazungu mit "Umherreisende" und es ist die gängige Bezeichnung für weiße Tourist:innen. Manchmal wollen uns die Kinder nur grüßen, manchmal holen sie sich einen High Five von uns ab oder wollen von uns fotografiert werden. Manchmal rufen sie auch "Take a picture!" nur um sich lachend aus dem Staub zu machen sobald wir unsere Handys/Kameras zücken 😁.

      Verpflegt wurden wir auf der Reise überwiegend mit Avocados 😍🥑. Mittags machten wir uns an schönen Aussichtspunkten immer eine gigantische Portion Guacamole, die wir dann in Chapatis (hiesige Wraps) wickelten. Frühstück und Abendessen gab es immer in den Unterkünften und das Essen - meist bestehend aus Reis, Eiern, Bohnen, Gemüse, etwas Fleisch, Obst und natürlich Avocados - war immer ausgesprochen gut.

      Leider waren Tag zwei und drei - die Tage, die die beste Aussicht versprechen sollten - sehr bewölkt, sodass wir häufig vor einer weißen Wand standen, wo eigentlich ein Viewpoint sein sollte. Das war schon sehr schade, der weiße Dunst in den Bergen hatte aber immerhin auch etwas mystisches und atmosphärisches. Und wir hatten trotzdem viele schöne Ausblicke!

      Insgesamt sind wir auf jeden Fall sehr zufrieden mit der Tour. Wir haben viel gesehen, viel erfahren und drei Tage in sehr guter Gesellschaft verbracht - einfach schööön ☺️.      Läs mer

      Dar Es Salaam nach Lushoto

      Im Dunkeln verlassen wir unseren Schlafplatz und es geht erst mit dem Bus, dann mit der Fähre, dann mit dem nächsten Bus zur richtigen Bushaltestelle. Dort werden wir sofort von ca 10 Männern und Frauen abgefangen und gefragt wo es hin hingehen soll. Wir lassen uns irgendwann weich klopfen und zahlen für unseren Bus viel zu viel. Dann will unser „Ticketverkäufer“ noch frecherweise 4 Euro pro Rucksack von uns haben. An dieser Stelle lassen wir uns nicht mehr übers Ohr hauen und bleiben standhaft! 6 Stunden sitzen und schwitzen wir. Dann müssen wir in einen sehr kleinen Bus umsteigen, bis wir dann gegen 3 Uhr endlich in Lushoto ankommen.
      Mweda wartet bereits auf uns in einem kleinen Café. Durch Dschungel, über kleine Bäche führt uns Mweda in sein schönes grünes Zuhause. Wir fühlen uns auf Anhieb wohl.
      Nach einer Dusche laufen wir in die kleine Stadt, kaufen auf dem Markt frisches Obst (eine Mango= 20 cent, eine riesige Avocado= 10 Cent) und verspeisen es in einem Café von Mwedas Freund. Lauter Kunst, guter Kaffee und eine nette Atmosphäre erwarten uns dort.

      Der Schamane im alten deutschen Dorf

      Lushoto hieß zur Zeiten des deutschen Kolonialismus noch Wilhelmstal. Aus dieser Zeit stammt u.a. die deutsche Kirche, der deutsche Friedhof oder auch Gebäude im deutschen Stil.
      Die Dorfbewohner haben damals jedoch noch ihre Traditionen bewahrt. Sonst ich bei einem Schamanen und ließ mir u.a. erklären, was sie gegen Malaria oder Corona unternehmen.Läs mer

      Kisasa Wasserfälle & Irente

      Mir wurde gesagt, dass die Regenzeit vorbei ist und ich mit keinem Regen zu rechnen hätte, also zog ich zu den Kisasa-Wasserfällen los. Nach ein paar Fotos fing es dann an und ich wanderte auf dem matschigen Boden zurück zur Unterkunft.
      Nachmittags kam die Sonne wieder heraus und ich wanderte zur Irente Farm, die deutsche Siedler vor einigen Jahren aufgebaut hatten. Dort gab es eine Brotzeit und die Vorfreude auf eine schöne Aussicht stieg. Leider war auf der anderen Seite des Bergsattels alles wolkenverhangen. Die Wanderung durch die Eukalyptuswälder war trotzdem super.      Läs mer

      Strange creatures everywhere

      Days pass by like pieces of a bar of chocolate. I didn’t have good chocolate for months though! Two weeks since I returned here and in a few days I have to extend my visa again. I can spend a whole day chasing the dogs or petting the cat, watching the clouds or letting a chameleon climb from my sleeve through the beard on my head. Strange creatures everywhere. Lizards eating spiders half of their own size, for example. In the invasive black wattle trees I found a caterpillar carrying several tiny, vertical cocoons on its back. Nobody knew what that was. I did some research. It turns out to be a caterpillar which has been blessed by a parasitoid wasp of the Braconidae family. Theses wasps lay eggs under the skin of caterpillars. The larvae then feed on the caterpillar’s juices while the caterpillar keeps marching on and harvesting the plants of his desire. Finally, the larvae exit his body and build their cocoons on his outside while he continues his daily business. Here we go. I put the caterpillar in a box and made him my experiment. His name is Donald.

      Meanwhile I planted a few more trees and enjoy the extraordinary food. Eggs on home-made bread, tomatoes and cheese, tons of bush avocado, local orange marmalade, fresh juices and cereals with yoghurt for breakfast. Spinach pies, Polish gołąbki, self-made pasta or potato salads and rich soups for lunch and/or dinner. Banana or guava bread with coffee and chai masala in between.

      One day Jutta and Markus on two German KTM motorbikes came for a coffee. They travel "from north to south", stay in Lushoto right now and were on a day trip around the mountains. As it gets colder Philipp and I spend the evenings at the fire and I regularly use my oven in the cottage. I like to sit in my bed and do crappy stuff on the computer, like writing this blog post, while listening to Stevie Ray Vaughan, Steve 'n' Seagulls, Snarky Puppy or Slagsmålsklubben ;-) Now and then I support the local organisation with geodata expertise and empower the people with QGIS. Preferably also from my bed office. On Monday I will restart working remotely in Germany in far-from-home-office style. Exciting!      Läs mer

      Heading for the Usambara Mountains

      After lunch, we drove on into the Usambara Mountains. As we climbed higher, the views got better and better. There were stunning waterfalls and hair-raisingly narrow roads with sharp hairpin bends. We could feel the temperature dropping. There were crops growing on insanely steep slopes, making us wonder at the hard work required to plant, tend, and harvest them!Läs mer

      Onto to Lushoto

      As much as we hoped this wouldn't be a full travel day, it was. To make our way to Lushoto, we had to bus back to Tanga, then to Lushoto stopping in Muheza and Segera, and transferring onto a dalla dalla from Mombo. Local transportation here stops whenever someone wants to get on or off, which makes for slow moving progress.

      Our goal was to arrive in Lushoto in time to book a hike through the Usambara mountains for the morning, but we arrived much later then hoped. Still - anything is possible as a Muzungu. We got out of our transport in Lushoto and started looking for accommodation as it was getting dark. Within a few minute we were sitting inside a tourist office talking about prices for the hike. The man insisted on accompanying us to find a room for the night, which we usually resist but this time we needed him to hook us up with a hike so we didn't mind.
      25,000TZS for the room, including breakfast. And we negotiated for 50$/day/person (from 65$/day) for a 3 day hike, ending in Mtae.

      During the negotiations, we walked out saying we wanted to get food, really wanting to see what other companies had to offer. But instead, we found out it was market day and we ended up walking around the local market for half an hour, starved and not speaking to any other tour operators... Maybe not the most productive use of our time, but I love markets! We bought a sweater for the mountains since it's colder and paid the amazing local price of 2,500TZS (1.44$CAD). After this useless and wonderful experience, we returned to our tour guy to book everything. So it's 6.30pm and we booked a private guide who will feed us and bring us to housing for 3 days, leaving the next morning at 8am. Tanzania is making this too easy.

      We finally got to eating - it is now 630pm, and all we've had is chapati and banana in the morning, I bought a plain white cake piece and some oranges from the bus window, and that's it. So we sat with the locals and had ourselves some street food. It's the first time we took 2 plates! So far, we've shared the one plate and it's been enough, but this time we hungry! And then of course, like most tourists are familiar with, I ended up spending the night creating symphonies in the washroom, not looking forward to the risk of dehydration tomorrow. Yay for me!       Trek Usambara (jour 1)

      Départ pour un trek de 3 jours entre Lushoto et Mambo(Mtae) avec un super guide. 25km avec beaucoup de montées, c’était très sportif. Au début le temps était très couvert, mais finalement nous avons fini par avoir un rayon de soleil. Nous avons traversé la forêt protégée de Magamba, des petits villages où les gens étaient adorables et une multitude de champs. Ils cultivent de tout ! Tomates, carottes, chou, maïs, oignons… Nous avons aussi aperçu des caméléons et des singes colobus blancs et noirs magnifiques mais trop rapides pour les prendre en photos. Pour les 3 derniers kilomètres, on a pris un moto-taxi sur un chemin très en pente plein de trous et de pierres. Ici ils sont habitués mais j’avoue avoir eu assez peur. Hébergement et repas traditionnel super bons.Läs mer

      Lushoto

      Um 4:30 Uhr klingelte der Wecker, da um 05:30 Uhr schon der Bus nach Mombo bzw. Lushoto fuhr. Die sechs Stunden Fahrt wurden von den zahlreichen mobilen Verkäufern gut verkürzt.
      Nach der Safari geht es nochmal kurz in die Berge zum Entspannen und das Dorf machte bisher einen ganz netten Eindruck.Läs mer
