      Serengeti Tag 3

      Seit gestern Abend wissen wir, warum man ab Dämmerung nur mit Begleitung zum Haus darf: auf dem Weg dahin standen 2 Büffel neben uns. Möchte man nicht alleine sein.
      Heute geht’s los zur Dämmerungsfahrt. 6:08 Uhr los, 6:18 Uhr bereits ziemlich hell. Hier in Äquatornähe geht das ziemlich schnell. 6:36 Uhr dann Sonnenaufgang. Unser Miteisender Schweizer Franz ist schon mit dem Ballon unterwegs.

      Day 12

      Abflug nach Sansibar

      Seronera Serengeti: Flugplatz mit Graspiste, na dann guten Flug 🙈
      Der hatte Verspätung. Mal schauen , wie das klappt. Unsere Koffer haben keine Kennzeichnung. Außerdem müssen wir in Arusha umsteigen und ob der Anschlussflug noch klappt, steht in den Sternen. Aber: Hakuna Matata!

      Hat alles geklappt, mit nur einer Verspätung von 1 Stunde. Mal von meiner Panikattacke in dem Miniflieger abgesehen.
      Im Maru Maru Hotel erst mal in den Rooftop Pool und dann raus, was essen. Danach noch eine Runde durch die komplette Altstadt, weil total die Orientierung verloren…
      Vor lauter Gässchen und Winkel. Wir mussten irgendwann fragen, und der Einheimische war natürlich „Guide“ und wollte uns gleich eine Bootstour für den nächsten Tag verkaufen…      Read more

      Day 11

      Serengeti/Lobo-Lodge

      Beim Eingang zur Serengeti gibt es eine lange Wartezeit. Irgendwas funktioniert nicht mit dem Internet und es fehlen noch Dokumente. Wir sind uns an das Warten schon längst gewohnt und machen das Beste aus der Situation. Wir essen, unterhalten uns und laufen hoch zu einem Aussichtspunkt...etwas Bewegung schadet nicht...obwohl die Schrittzähler durch das Gerumpel verfälschte Rekordzahlen vorweisen 😜
      Es ist eine lange Fahrt und wir sind enttäuscht, denn zu dieser Zeit gibt es kaum Tiere hier. Nur am Anfang dürfen wir eine Löwin fast kraulen, als sie um unser Auto stolziert. 🦁 Die Stimmung in der Gruppe bleibt aber bestens. So sind alle sofort bereit für Oliver zu seinem 14. GEBURTSTAG ein Ständchen zu singen. Sogar Salehe singt mit. 🍰🍹🍹Die 4 deutschen Mitfahrer und der Fahrer sind uns alle schon sehr ans Herz gewachsen. 🥰

      Wir sind froh, nach zwei Zeltübernachtungen heute in der Lobo-Lodge übernachten zu können. Die Anlage ist wunderschön und ÜBERRASCHUNG: Der Klaus ist auch da 😅🤣 wir essen gemeinsam mit seiner Truppe und es wird viel gelacht...und wir wissen, dass Landeline ihr Guide ist....plötzlich steht er vor uns und Karin und ich sind wie zwei Rehe 😂 Mein Muskeltest muss wohl etwas missverstanden haben 🤏🏼 kidogo

      Anmerkung Karin: das Abwerben von Landelin blieb leider erfolglos... aber Hauptsache der Klaus war da!! 😂🤣 Was für ein lustiger Abend 😅 Und was für eine unbequeme Nacht; ich habe noch nie auf einer soooo harten Matratze geschlafen und wünschte mit mein gemütliches Feldbett im Zelt zurück 😬      Read more

      Safari dag 1 en 2 Serengeti

      Prachtige tocht over de Serengeti, heel veel dieren gezien. Eigenlijk alle big five, zelfs een slapend luipaard in een boom. Het was magisch mooi, dit is wat natural high betekent. S'avonds gingen we in het midden van de Serengeti onze tentjes opzetten, we werden omringd door het geluid van wilde dieren en zagen een hyena langs onze tent lopen.Read more

      Day 21

      Migration

      Today we are heading off to look for the Wildebeest migration. But just as we got down the road from our lodge there were two cheetahs on the road so we had to stop for them and then a few minutes more and a group of Lions. So many animal on the way, eventually David put his foot down, I think he thought we would never get there.

      All of the roads are bumpy but some are horrendous. This one was the later but after about an half an hour of corrugations we started to see a few Wildebeest and then more and more. It’s unbelievable how many animals there are, they stretch from horizon to horizon.

      We found a river the Wildebeest were crossing and stayed to watch them for a while. While we were there a young Lion came down to try his luck catching one. Think he got a bit bamboozled with how many there were and couldn’t decide which one to go for so ended up with nothing. There were so many cars there, and our driver David was getting cranky with some of the other drivers coming too close to the river and eventually got out and started directing them back so the animals had more room to get to the river.

      Wildebeest are so funny, let’s go, let’s not go, and then whoop I’m going and then they are all in and then all out and then maybe all in again. We thought it’s would all be over once the Lion turned up but David said No just wait, they will forget about the Lion in ten minutes.

      David found us a spot to have lunch with the Wildebeest so they bleeped all round us for an hour or so. Then I wanted to go back and see another river crossing. I’m glad we did because it was only us and one other car there.

      We came back a different and more scenic way in time for a cocktail and a fire before dinner.      Read more

      Day 4

      Serengeti - Sehen wir die Big Five?

      Der Start war etwas hektisch. Meinen Wecker hatte ich überhört.
      Nun standen uns ca 11 Stunden Autofahrt bevor. Teilweise Asphalt, oft aber mit "Tanzanian Massage". Schönen Gruß von meinen Bandscheiben.
      Bei Vodafone noch schnell eine Daten-SIM geholt. Weiter geht's.
      Am zeitigen Nachmittag erreichen wir dann den Serengeti Nationalpark. Jetzt geht's los mit Tieren.....
      Antilopen aller Art, Elefanten, Giraffen, Büffel. Aber immer wieder müssen wir weiter. Unser Camp liegt über 2 h vom Eingang des Parks weg.
      Unser Fahrer stoppt, 6 Löwinnen liegen faul 2 m neben der Straße. Sie waren kaum dazu zu bewegen ihren Kopf zu heben. Nur nicht bewegen...
      Wir kamen gut durchgeschüttelt im Camp an aber waren von den vielen Tieren begeistert.      Read more

      Serengeti. We hadden en 6u lange rit om in Serengeti te geraken. Eens daar hebben we veel dieren gezien. 2 leeuwinnen verstopt onder een brugje en in een buis, een leeuw, leeuwin met kleintjes, hyena's, nijlpaarden, en veel andere dieren die we gisteren hadden gezien zoals zebra's, olifanten, giraffen,...Read more

      Day 109

      A perfect end to our first Serengeti day

      As our safari continued, we saw:

      • Tawny eagles
      • Five lions sleeping under a tree
      • A den of hyenas (a pair with their pups)
      • A male lion, sleeping
      • Several Coke’s hartebeest (this was a new species for us)
      • A leopard and her cub up a tree. Unfortunately, she came down and disappeared into the bush before we had chance to take photos.
      • A lilac-breasted roller – the national bird of Kenya
      • A group of ground hornbill
      • A leopard in a tree with her kill – a small gazelle
      • A leopard walking through long grass close to the road

      The last two sightings were incredible, but they caused some friction between our driver, Mankinga, and Nash. Despite Mankinga’s explanations over the radio, Nash couldn’t find us. Amos, the driver of the other 4x4, was less experienced than Mankinga and didn’t know the names of all of the small roads and tracks in the Serengeti. Nash wanted Mankinga to give up and go straight to our campsite. Mankinga is passionate about what he does and wanted to give us (his clients) the best possible experience, so he continued to where he knew the animals were. Nash wasn’t impressed, but we were very grateful as we saw the animals and those in the other vehicle didn’t!

      We got to the campsite after dark, so we had to get sorted out using our head lamps. Luckily, the guy who drove Ibrahim to camp had put our tents up for us! Dinner was mushroom soup followed by lamb stew with mashed potato. Both were very good. Mark was on washing-up duty, and I was on flapping and packing. It was 9.30pm by the time we’d finished. The facilities were none too clever, so we skipped a shower and went straight to bed, knowing we would only have a few hours before we had to be up again!      Read more

      Day 110

      Early morning game drive in Serengeti

      August 24, 2023 in Tanzania ⋅ 🌙 15 °C

      We got up at just after 5am, but we’d already been awake for about an hour. We were woken by Kim’s voice as she went off for her hot-air balloon ride! We had a light breakfast of bread, butter, jam, and bananas. While we were eating in the kitchen, an enormous Maribou stork (one of the ‘ugly five’) flew over us and landed just outside. He strutted around for quite a while and happily posed for photos! 😂

      Talking of photos, we were going to have to be a bit selective about what we took today as we hadn’t been able to charge the camera or my phone properly.

      We boarded our 4x4s for our morning game drive. We could hear baboons barking as we drove out of camp. We saw several balloons above us. Mankinga wasn’t impressed. He said the animals are always scared by the sound of the jets.

      During the morning, we had an amazing time and saw:

      • A white-bellied bustard
      • Buffalos
      • Zebras
      • 3 hyenas
      • A family of warthogs
      • Giraffes
      • Lots of guinea fowl
      • Some hyrax sitting on top of rocks (these were too far away to photograph as we were trying to make our camera battery last). We saw them at Spitzkoppe Camp in Namibia.
      • A solitary eland, the biggest antelope in Africa, weighing up to 800kg! We saw some at the Cape in South Africa, but they were quite far away, so we took the opportunity to snap this one close up!
      • A leopard walking away from a tree and another stalking a gazelle. Both of these were fascinating to watch, but too far away to photograph properly.

      While we were seeing all this wildlife, we were driving through vast open grassy plains with isolated mature trees and odd rock formations.      Read more

      Day 110

      Cheetahs in Serengeti

      August 24, 2023 in Tanzania ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

      Our next sighting was of a female cheetah and her three cubs! Cheetah sightings are pretty rare, so we were all excited to see them. Once again, the other vehicle was unable to get close to them like we did, so words were exchanged over the radio between Mankinga and Nash. We reassured Mankinga that we were on his side and thanked him for all his efforts on our behalf.

      We then saw a group of elephants on a grassy plain. Mankinga explained that you can easily distinguish between male and female elephants. Males have round heads, and females have square ones!      Read more
