      Day 11: Nothing but rest and relaxation

      So far so good. I’ve managed quite a few days now without doing anything but hang at the beach. The result: I have finished reading one of two books (The Mastery of Love, a MUST READ) and I have red skin 🦞🦀

      The book I have mentioned is about the mastery of self-love and so there is also a chapter about beauty, saying that basically we are all beautiful (because we are LIFE); it’s just our culture and society that have programmed us to judge what is beautiful and what is not.

      Some food for thought. But I fully agree. Trust me, you will too if you think about it for a few minutes (really, read the book). The African people for example, have a completely different perception about what is beautiful than we do, so do Asians etc.

      Weiterreise nach Matemwe

      Wie schon erwähnt, haben wir uns entschieden, per Taxi zur nächsten Unterkunft zu reisen. Die Fahrt nach Matemwe hat uns das Leben hier in Afrika noch einmal gezeigt; Wasser aus einem Brunnen zu schöpfen ist hier Realität. Uns ist wieder einmal bewusst geworden, wie sorgenfrei und behütet wir in Deutschland leben.
      Die letzten Meter zur Anlage erfolgen über einen unebenen, sandigen Weg. Es ist eine kleine, sehr schön angelegte Hotelanlage. Auch hier wurden wir herzlich empfangen. Während wir auf unser Zimmer warteten, tranken wir etwas im hauseigenen Restaurant mit Blick auf Pool und Meer. Unser Zimmer befand sich im ersten Stock mit großem Balkon und Outdoordusche im Bad. Nachmittags entspannten wir am Pool. Auch im Meer konnte man sich gut abkühlen. Den Abschluss am Abend machte ein sehr leckeres Essen mit herrlichem Ausblick.      Read more

      Matemwe, Zanzibar

      We came to Zanzibar with mixed feelings after reading a news story while in Nairobi about how the ministry of health is targeting AIDS clinics to arrest gay men. Horrible policy in every way! Some of the people we love and admire most are gay, so this offended us deeply. We thought of how we might protest by donning rainbow bracelets or t-shirts, but couldn’t find anything suitable (no surprise). Unfortunately, many of the countries we’ve visited have similarly dim human rights records (especially related to gender and love equality). Sigh…
      In any case, we left mainland Africa and flew to Zanzibar from Nairobi, arriving late to a small beachfront hotel on the east side of the island near Matemwe beach. We stayed here a few days with our only plans being to laze around before we start a busy month touring Madagascar. It was great having a few days doing nothing except thinking about where we have been and what we have coming up over the next few months. It was surprisingly easy to get in a routine of waking late for breakfast, swimming, reading, napping, swimming, eating dinner and then going back to sleep. It was pretty great.      Read more

      Day 9: Off to Zanzibar

      The Kilimandscharo chapter is finished now and it’s time to start off to a new one: Me time on Zanzibar 🌴🐬🧜🏻‍♀️

      I am staying at this beautiful place called „Zanzibar Retreat Hotel“ 🌴 - it is right at the beach (Matemwe).

      I seriously have never seen a beach this beautiful. Not even Thailand or Mauritius can beat this beauty! The water is turquoise everywhere, warm like a bathtub and the sand ... oh my ... the sand is as soft as the flour we use at home for baking (no kidding).

      So a week of relax and chill? Actually yes, but it’s going to be a challenge. You know how I need stuff to do. On top of that I’m all by myself surrounded by couples, honeymooners and small groups of girlfriends ... but when the waiter asks for my order at dinner time my answer shall be “yes, just me” ... and I shall feel great about it every day 💛

      This week’s challenge: Be happy all by yourself, alone yet never lonely 🙏🥰👩🏼💛 - without having anything to do (believe me, this is a tough one) 😱😬      Read more

      Day 10: A culture of peace and happiness

      Sorry for the late post...I’ve been busy doing nothing 🤷🏼‍♀️ 🌴🐬😎

      You know what I love about this country? The Hakuna Matata attitude (Swahili, means „no worries“ - so no it’s not just a thing invented by Disney’s Lion King). Everyone seems to be relaxed and happy.

      The best example of this is the many different tribes and religions living peacefully together in this county. Tanzania is home to more than 100 different ethnic groups and while approximately 60% of the population is Christian, there are also 35% of people following the Muslim belief (in Zanzibar it’s even more than 90%). And guess what, no war. No fights. No hate. 🙏💛

      I find this fascinating. This is not exactly a rich country measured per GDP, but still the people living here manage to set an example for the world 👍✌️

      One of the drivers I had told me that his dad is Muslim and his mom is Christian. On Sunday each of them attends a different service and the kids can chose whom to accompany until they are old enough to decide which faith to follow. I think this is fabulous. Absolutely fabulous. And I wish the rest of the world would do a better job in accepting people’s differences.

      Okay so this day was a “critical about society” day ... having nothing to do but think, these are the thoughts running through my head 😂

      PS: Simba is also Swahili language and means „Lion“...Disney apparently did a good research for their movie 🦁👌      Read more

      Heute gab’s nicht viel zu erzählen. Nach einem guten Frühstück ging es an den Pool. Da wir recht zeitig dort waren, bekamen wir sogar zwei Liegen - die sind hier in der Anlage rar. Vor einem Strandspaziergang haben wir noch einen Schnorchel-Trip zum Mnemba Atoll für den Folgetag gebucht - wir sind gespannt. Das Abendessen nahmen wir im Nachbarhotel ein. Auch dort was das Essen sehr gut und das Personal freundlich.Read more

      Day 15: Time to say goodbye

      Well, that’s it, today is my last day in paradise and also my last day in Tanzania - for now! Because I will come back in March.

      I spent my last day at the beach, in the pool and outside of the hotel exploring the surroundings a bit ... see for yourself but to me it was quite shocking that I can stay at this beautiful resort and just behind its walls there is people living ... uhm ... differently.

      Tanzania is a beautiful country. But it’s poor. It needs help. It deserves so much help because the people here are extremely friendly, they live in peace. So I’m already thinking about what I can do ...      Read more

      Tauchen vor Matemwe

      Vom Hotel waren wir nach ein paar Minuten Strangspaziergang an der Tauchbasis. Wir bekamen unser Equipment und Chetti wurde Tauchguide. Abfahrt vom Strand in Richtung Tauchsport "Checkpoint". Schon bei der Anfahrt war zu sehen, dass sehr, sehr viele Boote mit Schnorchlern und Tauchern vor Ort waren. Als wurde uns eingeschärft, unbedingt wieder ins richtige Boot zu steigen. Rein ins Wasser und abgetaucht....
      Und dann kam die Enttäuschung. Nichts zu zu sehen. Keine großen Schwärme von Fischen...... Nichts. Ich habe mich auf einmal nicht mehr wohl gefühlt. Nichts zu sehen - Unwohlsein kam auf. Wann ist der Tauchgang endlich zu Ende. Spaß ist anders. Ich verzichte auf den 2. TG. Birgit taucht noch einmal mit. Aber auch da ist nichts Besonderes zu sehen. Also nichts verpasst. Also bleibt es bei den einem Tag unter Wasser. Aufgrund der jetzt herrschenden Ebbe fuhren uns die Boote an die Riffkante und wir mussten zum Stand laufen. Anschließend wurden wir in Auto verfrachtet uns zur Basis zurückgefahren. Schön ist anders und noch einmal tue ich mir das nicht an.      Read more
