      Ticking off the big sights - Part 1

      We did things a little backwards in Istanbul compared to usual and we went on a tour of the city today, just as we come to the end of our time here.

      This was probably pretty much Dale Day as other than going to the bazaars (🎵 how bazaar, how bazaar 🎶) this was a history tour hitting just about all the big sites around Istanbul all the way out to the Theodotian Walls and up the Golden Horn to see the Ottoman forts and get a seaside view of Galata Tower that held the one end of the chain that protected Constantinople from attack by sea for near 900 years.

      We did break the number one rule of tours though - “never buy from the first shop the guide takes you to”. Turns out we bought some very overpriced chocolates and nuts at the Egyptian Spice Bazaar…about four (identical) shops down they were a third of the price 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

      Dale thought the Hagia Sofia was absolutely breathtaking - so much history, so much engineering. The Blue Mosque was very pretty, and looked much more comfortable as a mosque than Hagia Sofia did, and it was pretty cool getting to see one of the obelisk’s from Karnak - that we only just visited less than 2 months earlier in Egypt.

      I think we all thought the boat ride was pretty cool though. It really brought home how big and actually quite pretty Istanbul is - and showed us where the richy smichies live whilst Taki bf a break from the heat 😜

      Tag 64.1: Am und auf dem Wasser

      Nachdem wir heute Morgen gemütlich in den Tag gestartet sind, haben wir Matthias („Mädes unterwegs“ heißt sein YouTube Kanal) noch, auf seine Bitte hin, ein paar Fragen vor der Kamera beantwortet. Matthias ist mit einem selbst ausgebauten Feuerwehrauto und seinem Hund Niki unterwegs und auf der Reise nach Georgien. Unsere zwei Jungs waren ganz verliebt in die weiße Schäferhündin, die zwar nicht gut sehen kann, aber alles geduldig mit sich machen ließ. So waren die Kinder auch Dauergast bei Matthias und Niki, wenn wir da waren. Matthias finden wir eine spannende Person und haben uns sehr gefreut die Bekanntschaft gemacht zu haben.
      Irgendwann mittags sind wir dann losgezogen und zunächst mal den Weg zum Flughafenbus abgelaufen, geschaut wo genau die Haltestelle ist, wie viel er kostet, wo man das Ticket bekommt und wann er fährt. Da wir die letzten Tage unglaublich viel gelaufen sind, wollten wir heute mal etwas die Öffis nutzen. Beim Fahrkartenkauf, der etwas undurchsichtige war, habe ich die Idee fast schon wieder bereut und richtig dann beim Einsteigen bzw. Reinquetschen in die überfüllte Straßenbahn.
      Nach einer gefühlten Ewigkeit sind wir dann auf der anderen Seite der Galata-Brücke angekommen und haben uns in das kleine Restaurant am Fährterminal gesetzt bei dem wir an Donnerstag schon waren und uns nochmal mit Kumpir, Gözleme und Getränken gestärkt. Danach haben wir eine Fähre genommen, die über Eminönü (andere Seite Galata-Brücke) hinüber gefahren ist nach Üsküdar auf die asiatische Seite der Stadt.      Meer informatie

      Tag 64.3: Bei Sonnenuntergang

      Bei Sonnenuntergang haben wir die Fähre zurück nach Eminönü genommen und uns nach wieder Ankunft auf dem europäischen Teil der Stadt noch kurz ins Getümmel des Ägyptischen Bazars (auch Gewürzbazar genannt) - bzw. in Seitenstraßen außerhalb - um ein paar Gewürze, Kaffee, Souvenirs und Käse zu kaufen.
      Danach haben wir uns wieder in die Tram in Richtung unseres Viertels gequetscht. In unserem Viertel angekommen, haben wir uns noch auf die Suche nach einem
      Restaurant zum Abendessen gemacht und wurden in einer etwas abgelegeneren Straße fündig. Wir haben im traditionell türkischen Restaurant mal die Gerichte „Pilov“ (ein Reisgericht mit Rindfleisch), „Kiyma Sis“ (ein Fleischspieß) und „Kavurma Lagman“ (ein Nudelgericht) probiert. Für die Kinder gab es wir meist noch Pommes dazu, die hier in der Türkei bisher meist ziemlich lätschig sind. Aber unsere Jungs haben auch alles andere mitgegessen und es haben uns alle Gerichte sehr gut geschmeckt.
      Nun aber zurück „nach Hause“, denn es mussten vor dem Heimaturlaub von Robert noch ein paar Dinge erledigt und gepackt werden und die Zeit war schon mal wieder etwas weiter vorangeschritten als beabsichtigt.
      Wieder ein spannender Tag in Istanbul geht zu Ende.      Meer informatie

      Tag 65.2: Süleymaniye Camii

      Im Anschluss haben wir uns auf den Weg zur „Süleymaniye Camii (Mosche)“ gemacht. Dies ist eine prächtige Moschee aus dem 16. Jahrhundert mit Gärten und einer Aussicht auf das Goldene Horn sowie den Bosporus. Nach einem Blick in die Moschee haben wir nochmal den Ausblick genoßen, und Kurt ausgrubt sowie gestärkt und einem Straßenverkäufer zwei Spielkreisel angekauft, von denen vor allem Otto sehr begeistert war und sich schon darauf freute es zu üben.Meer informatie

      Galata Bridge

      Arriving down the hill across some very busy streets is the Galata Bridge across the Golden Horn, a natural inlet in the Bosphorus River where it meets the Sea of Marmara. The Golden Horn divides “Old Istanbul” (former Byzantium) and the new city to the north. In 1502 Sultan Bayezid II commissioned Leonardo da Vinci to design a bridge to be built at the location of today’s Galata Bridge. However, the Sultan did not approve of da Vinci’s single span design and the bridge was never built. Michelangelo was also invited to design a bridge for the Golden Horn but he declined the project. In 1845 Valide Sultan had the first Galata Bridge built at the mouth of the Golden Horn and called it New Bridge (Cisr-i Atik). This wooden bridge was replaced in 1863 by another wooden bridge. A third bridge on this spot was completed in 1875 and used until 1912 when it was moved upstream to replace the New Bridge. A floating bridge was constructed in 1912 by a German firm but it was damaged by fire in 1992 and taken upstream to make way for the current bridge which was completed in 1994.

      There is a level below the traffic level with some touristy restaurants and stores. From the bridge you can look west to Europe and east across the Bosphorus to Asia and there is a good view of the mosque.

      After you cross the bridge and a large plaza you immediately enter a series of street markets, which are actually the back of the exterior of the Spice Market, on your way up a long hill to the mosque.      Meer informatie

      Rustem Pasa Mosque

      I had some trouble locating this mosque at first as it is just built right into the surrounding markets, but it was worth the extra few minutes as it is just filled with stunning tile work.

      The mosque was originally constructed in 1560 and was the first project of Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan. The interior is decorated with intricate Iznik faience tiles. These tiles are some of the best produced and feature bright red which was one of the rarest and most complex colors to produce in Iznik tiles. The tiles cover the walls, mihrab and mimbar. The mosque has a single minaret and central dome. The mosque doors are carved and feature inlaid wood and gilding.

      The mosque is named after Rustem Pasha (1500-1561) who was the son-in-law of Sultan Suleyman the Magnificent and has gone down in history as the man who plotted with Suleyman’s wife Roxelana to denounce Prince Mustafa and put Roxelana’s son, Prince Selim on the throne. Prince Selim the Sot’s reign signified the beginning of the end of the Ottoman Empire. When Rustem had his mosque built he had to be careful not to rival the beauty and size of the Sultan’s mosques. So, he chose to build it in the marketplace and focus on the mosque’s interior decoration with the tiles rather than exterior grandeur. I'll say it worked!      Meer informatie

      Ich bin zwar völlig im Arsch aber ins Zimmer legen geht jetzt a ned
      War grad ganz allein in einer Moschee.
      Ich habe das Talent den Touristen aus dem Weg zu gehen 😄
      Habe auch noch günstiges Wasser für morgen gekauft. Ned einfach hier. Es gibt alles. Doppelt und dreifach. Aber keine kleinen Läden wo man was kaufen kann. Im Balkan an jeder Ecke.      Meer informatie

      Spice Bazaar

      So, leaving the mosque, it was thankfully downhill through more narrow streets. One thing you see a lot is deliveries are made by men pulling carts. Istanbul is also afflicted with the scooter problem, and it is even more perplexing here with the crowds and the cobblestones and the hordes of motor scooters.

      The next stop is the Spice or Egyptian Market. It was really a neat place.

      Misir Carsisi or the Egyptian Market is one of Istanbul’s largest bazaars. It is believed that the market got its name because it was built using funds from the Ottoman division in Egypt in 1660 and completed in 1664. The profits from the market would be used for the upkeep of the mosque but today the market is a separate entity. Although the name suggests that all the stores in the market sell spices more and more bazaar businesses are selling a variety of goods like cheese, nuts, fruit, sweets, souvenirs and other items. Today there are approximately 85 stores selling spices and other goods. The covered market building is surrounded by small lanes which also have many stores selling interesting goods. On the western side of the market are outdoor stalls selling fresh produce including coffee.      Meer informatie

      Bosphorus ferry tour

      Bosphorus Ferry Ride is a must do when you come to Istanbul. There are plenty of rides that one can pre-book. We did not pre-book anything today. We went to Eminönü and took a ferry from there. An hour and 45 minutes of gentle ride; 60 TL; beautiful. Definitely would recommend. It's a great way to see both the Asian and the European part of the city. Beautiful buildings along the way.Meer informatie

      Bosporus-Schifffahrt 🛳️

      Eine Bosporus-Schifffahrt 🛳️ gehört zu einem Istanbul-Besuch dazu. Vieles sieht man entlang des Wassers: Den Dolmabahçe-Palast, die Große Mecidiye Moschee, die Bosporus-Brücke und auch vieles auf der asiatischen Seite der Stadt. Gerne hätten wir auch diese besucht, doch die Zeit reichte nicht. Auf dem Schiff 🛳 wurden wir auch verpflegt, es gab wieder Mal einen türkischen Tee 🫖 für 5 Lire. Dies entspricht etwa 25 Rappen. Die Inflation ist in der Türkei 🇹🇷 unglaublich hoch. Zum Sonnenuntergang 🌇 waren wir wieder im Hafen ⚓.Meer informatie
