Eigentlich wollten wir heute Greenway House besuchen, aber leider haben wir übersehen, dass man den Parkplatz dafür vor Ort im voraus buchen muss. Hier ist alles sehr beengt. Also verschieben wir auf morgen und fahren stattdessen nach Brixham.
Brixham ist eine bunte Hafenstadt an der wunderschönen Englischen Riviera von South Devon. Trotz Sonntag ist es entspannt im Hafenbereich und die Menschen sind mit Fish & Chips essen und Krebsfang direkt an der Hafenmauer beschäftigt. Ein Netz in Form eines Eimers über die Mauer ins Wasser geworfen und an der sehr langen Schnur nach einiger Zeit wieder heraufziehen. So einfach. Einige hatten einen ganz guten Fang an Krebsen und Shrimps.
In Brixham kommt der Fisch fast direkt vom Kutter auf den Teller. Die Chips sind noch ausbaufähig aber der Fisch bei Rockwood war super.
Zum Ablaufen der ausgewiesenen Kalorien 🫣sind wir den South West Coast Path bis Berry Head gegangen. Und zwar so rechtzeitig, dass wir dort auch noch einen Tee und Flat White im Café genießen konnten. Man ist ja lernfähig.🤪Wie überall hier beglückt die Küste mit traumhaften Ausblicken und die Flora ist wirklich wie am Mittelmeer.

Die Campsites sind hier rar und so stehen wir auf dem Luxusplatz von Hillhead. Und unser Camp-Nachbar begrüßte uns mit "Guten Abend" und er wäre unter anderem 9 Jahre in Paderborn stationiert gewesen. Ein lustiger Austausch über Land und Leben und wir haben wertvolle Tipps bekommen.Read more

Nachts regnet es mal wieder etwas, aber als ich aufstehe scheint mir die Sonne ins Gesicht. Nach ca. einer Stunde Laufen bin ich mitten in Dartmouth wo ich meine Vorräte etwas auffülle und die Fähre über den Fluss Dart nehme. Es ist schon nach 11 Uhr als die Etappe dann so richtig anfängt, nach einem Stück vorbei an Cottages durch einen Wald geht es übelst steil rauf und runter immer direkt am Meer entlang. Gefühlt komme ich sehr langsam voran, die Route hat es in sich und mein Rucksack ist unerbittlich schwer. Je länger ich mich voran kämpfe desto besser wird das Wetter und desto heißer wird es. Ich verschlinge das Essen, das ich mir für den Tag bereitgelegt habe, denn ich brauche jede Energie, die ich kriegen kann. Irgendwann schaffe ich es dann doch die Kilometer hinter mich zu bringen und komme bei dem Campingplatz in der Nähe von Brixham an. Danach läuft alles seinen gewohnten, mittlerweile routinierten Gang und ich freue mich, dass es wieder ein Tag voller Sonnenschein ist.Read more

Torbay; Torquay, Paignton and Brixham

The three towns of Torquay, Paignton, and Brixham are situated around Torbay and comprise the English Riviera; this post describes additional places seen on diversions whilst walking between them - they are described by the picture captions.

Torquay was originally a fishing port but is now a major, large seaside town comprising several parishes and villages (including St Marychurch, Babbacombe, Wellswood, and Cockington visited earlier). Paignton is a pretty seaside town that merged with the neighbouring villages of Goodrington and Preston as it grew. Brixham is still an active fishing port and extremely pretty.Read more

Brixham liegt eingebetten in grüner Landschaft und strahlt wie ein Strauß Blumen. Die Häuser reihen sich in bunten Farben eng an eng aneinander. Mit dem Schlauchboot fahren Jonas und ich durch die wogenden Wellen des Sturms in Richtung Hafen. Vorbei an Yachten und Booten an Mooringbojen.
Vorbei an der größten Fischereiflotte Südenglands. Vorbei am Yachthafen mit den im Wind klappernden Masten. Hinein im das innere Hafenbecken. Dort ragt ein altertümliches Piratenschiff empor. Es sitzt im Schlick. Der Wasserstand ist so niedrig, dass das halbe Hafenbecken trocken liegt. Für Gezeitengewässer durchaus normal. Wir schlängeln uns durch die Boote hindurch und machen an einer Leiter fest. Dann setzen wir das erste Mal seit zwei Jahren Fuß auf den Boden Brixham's. Das letzte Mal lagen wir hier mit der Thor Heyerdahl. Von hier starteten wir in den Atlantik! Es lässt auch heute noch bei uns die Vorfreunde auf den warmen Süden wachsen.Read more

As soon as I waved off my parents, I met a really wholesome local elderly couple waiting for the ferry who were going off to get drunk in Kingswear. The other side of the ferry even they then waved me off! The path from there took plenty of ups and downs I'd describe as 'fun' but maybe they just caught me in a good mood. I met a real lad called Kieran hiking the whole path in the other direction and we sat on a bench and spoke for a good while. Then I dashed around Berry Head and I've arrived late in Brixham, which so far seems alright, definitely less horrible than Plymouth.Read more

Traveler A very fair assessment of Brixham. Paignton spoons has little to offer other than damp, but the Green Ginger in TQ is pretty and has an outdoor balcony seating area (if you were to fancy a morning pint that is)

I *forgot* to mark this last night, by which I mean decided not to until this morning. But I was camped on a golf course technically on the edge of a wooded area. I had been loitering at Churston cove for a while; people had clearly camped there before but left lots of rubbish and I didn't particularly want the blame, so this was the next best bet. Absolutely the dodgiest pitch for sure so far though. Regardless, no-one knew I was ever there as it's an early morning start today. Also it was too dark to even take a tent pic so enjoy Brixham pics on a beautiful evening instead.

Edit: and a pic in the morning where I immediately discovered this ideal place to camp like 5 minutes away.🤦‍♂️

Yesterday was also the day I reached halfway to a million steps, could be tight trying to reach the full mill though😬

Brixham has a long history of settlement along the Devon coast due to its great harbor. It is still a major fishing port that supplies fish for London restaurants everyday.

We stayed at a site above Brixham Harbour and walked down into the town in the afternoon. A beautiful little spot and the town was busy. The harbour is full of leisure boats and the odd fishing vessel - somewhat different from its heyday.
No wet fish to be seen for sale but large refrigerated lorries were waiting in the harbour presumably to take the catch from the few remaining commercial fisherman direct to markets elsewhere. There are lots of fish and chip shops doing a good trade.

We walked back up to the site via the harbour, where some seals were frolicking about in the water. Then onto Berry Head and back to the site,prior to enjoying a bbq in the evening sunshine.Read more

And we are back.
End of our trip with some fab memories so time to clean and pack away the boat.
Trip back to Poole by train for Sal to pick up the van so we can unload and back to the real world.

After a day holed up with wet weather we decided to head onto Brixham. A stroll onto the beach to check the seascape before departing Exmouth marina at 2.30.
