      Edinburgh

      Edinburgh is a place we really liked. It has so much history and interesting streets.

      Our day started with a coach tour of the city with a Scottish guide and then we were off to Edinburgh Castle, one of the oldest fortified places in Europe, having been there since the 12th century.

      We were the first group let in and so had front row spots for a 21 gun salute from the castles cannons given to a visiting dignitary, which was lucky and quite special. The army band played 'Scotland the Brave', which added to the occasion.

      We then explored on our own and saw the Scottish Crown Jewels, known as The Honours. King Charles will be crowned with these in another ceremony in August.

      After a couple of hours in the Castle we walked down the Royal Mile to Holyrood Castle, the official residence of the King in Scotland, where we timed it right for another ceremony for the same bloke we saw at the castle.

      We had a look around Princes Park and some local markets to finish the afternoon.

      Edinburgh Castle

      Today we visited Edinburgh Castle. Set on a rocky outcrop in the middle of the City, you can see why the Scots chose build a castle there. From the outside the castle bore a strong resemblance to Hogwarts, but alas there was no magic inside just hordes of tourists. Maybe because we are two weeks in and the novelty of old buildings is starting to wear off... but it felt like the site would have benefited from some more interpretative signage. Interesting fact... inside the castle is the oldest building in Edinburgh "St Margaret's Chapel". According to a reliable source if your name is Margaret you can get married in the chapel for free... for anyone else, it costs £20,000.Read more

      Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo

      The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo is an annual series of military tattoos performed by British Armed Forces, Commonwealth and international military bands, and artistic performance teams on the Esplanade of Edinburgh Castle in the capital of Scotland. The event is held each August as one of the Edinburgh Festivals.

      The term tattoo derives from a 17th-century Dutch phrase doe den tap toe ("turn off the tap") a signal to tavern owners each night, played by a regiment's Corps of Drums, to turn off the taps of their ale kegs so that the soldiers would retire to their billeted lodgings at a reasonable hour. With the establishment of modern barracks and full military bands later in the 18th century, the term "tattoo" was used to describe the last duty call of the day, as well as a ceremonial form of evening entertainment performed by military musicians.       Von Harry Potter zur H.M.Y. Britannia

      Selbstgeführte Audiotour auf den Spuren von Joanna K. Rowling und der Geschichte der Stadt.
      Wir starteten vor dem Castle, wo noch die Tribünen des Festivals zu sehen war. (Quiddich-Arena?)
      The Witchery, (heute ein Restaurant) hat ihren Namen von den Hunderten von Frauen und Männern, die auf dem Scheiterhaufen als Hexen auf Castlehill während des sechzehnten und siebzehnten Jahrhunderts ihr Leben gelassen haben. Die Asche der Leichen wurde im Zement verarbeitet, aus dem die Mauer um den Friedhof ist.
      Weiter ging es zum Writers-Museum, es präsentiert drei der bedeutendsten schottischen Schriftsteller: Robert Burns, Walter Scott und Robert Louis Stevenson.
      Es wird behauptet, Edinburghs Victoria Street sei Vorbild für die Winkelgasse gewesen…. heute eine schöne Straße mit wundersamen Läden.
      Dann ging es auf den Greyfriars Kirkyard mitten im Stadtzentrum. Ein schottischer Friedhof, wie man ihn sich romantischer nicht vorstellen könnte: mit schiefen Kreuzen und verwitterten Gruften, überragt vom Edinburgh Castle.
      Überhaupt wirkt Edinburgh fast wie eine Hollywood-Kulisse. vermittelt eigentlich überall ein „Harry Potter“-Gefühl.
      Schöne Tour.

      Weiter spazierten wir in die New Town und schauten uns The Georgian House Charlotte Square Nr. 7 an. Wir bummelten durch New Town und fuhren dann mit der Tram nach Leigh, nahmen unseren 5 o‘clock tea ☕️ auf der Royal Britannia ein und besichtigten selbige.      Read more

      Day 14

      Last Day in Belfast and on to Edinburgh

      This update encompasses 2 days of our trip. Our last day in Belfast, we didn't do a lot. The highlight was getting to meet up with a distant cousin and his wife who live here in Northern Ireland. We met Pascal and Jacqui a few years ago when they came to Canada to visit the lost Mooney family. When they found out we were coming to Belfast they reached out and drove up to Belfast to meet us for Lunch. What a great time.

      Afterwards we went on a tour of the Crumlin Road Gaol (the old jail here in Belfast during the time of the troubles). Super interesting and very well done. We don't have much in the way of pictures because we weren't supposed to take any (but I think Jenny snuck a few). And after that we pretty much just walked home and started getting ready to check out the next morning. So you see, not a lot to tell.

      Which then takes us on to Edinburgh. For this travel day, we had to catch a bus at city hall and that bus takes us on to the Stena Line ferry and then off to Glasgow. I spent a bit of time on the outside deck of the ferry watching Ireland slowly fade into the distance. Not knowing what lay ahead. Turns out, Scotland looks a lot like Ireland. Who Knew?!?! It really is beautiful here. Glasgow looked really neat but unfortunately we were just passing through. We got to Glasgow by bus so we walked down to the Central train station, brought tickets to the next train to Edinburgh immediately boarded and we were off. Just like that.

      Arriving in Edinburgh was like a dream. Tall buildings all around us. Steep hills and narrow closes to walk through. Amazing. Out apartment is really cool too. 3rd floor walk up with a view of the grass market... although our building is covered with scaffolding so that isn't ideal. We got in and settled then went to a lovely little restaurant called Mums Great Comfort Food for a late supper. Then it was off to buy some groceries, get back to our place and do some laundry. I am really looking forward to some exploring tomorrow.

      That is it for these 2 days. Hopefully more exciting updates tomorrow.

      P.s. 15,401 steps yesterday and 16,953 today. Gonna have to"step it up" tomorrow. HAHAHA.      Read more

      Till‘s und Lady & the Bear

      Nachdem ich auch in meinem Zimmer weiter den Weg von der Queen aus Westminster durch London nach Windsor geguckt habe, bin ich nochmal ein bisschen rausgegangen. ☀️ Ich habe mich dann irgendwie in einem Buchladen wiedergefunden, der gebrauchte Bücher verkauft. 📚 Und… vielleicht habe ich da auch welche gefunden. 🫠
      Danach war ich in einem sehr schönen Café mit echt leckerem Kuchen und Tee! ☕️🍋
      Abends habe ich mit der Familie ein bisschen gespielt und dann gab es Chinesisch zum Abendessen. 🥡
      Jetzt bin ich länger wach geblieben als unbedingt nötig und gehe also schnell ins Bett. 😴 Gute Nacht allerseits und bis morgen! ♥️🥳      Read more

      National History Museum #2

      Als ich dann wieder in der Stadt war, bin ich nochmal in das National History Museum gegangen. 🏛♥️
      Heute habe ich dann einen anderen Teil der Ausstellung gefunden, die irgendwie im Aufbau verwirrend war, aber auch spannend, wo man da dann so reinstolpert - sprichwörtlich gesehen natürlich! 🫢
      Die Holzschnitzereien fand ich total schick und die schottische Strickkunst (sagt das mal dreimal schnell hintereinander…) auch! 🧶
      Die Sanduhren wurden von Pastoren genutzt, um sich die Zeit zu messen, aber durchaus auch mal eine Stunde…⏳ Dann fand ich die Brücken auch cool! 🌉 Und dann stand da auf einmal ein normal-großer Zug! 🚂 Und ein riesiges rekonstruiertes Pumpwerk! 🫢 Der historische Leichenwagen war auch spannend.
      Und dann habe ich es auch geschafft die Dachterrasse ohne Regen zu erwischen! 😂🌦

      Arthur’s Seat

      Bevor ich euch etwas von heute erzähle, erzähle ich euch erst einmal, was ich hier überhaupt mache! 🙈

      Ich bin - verspätet - für (fast) einen Monat für ein Praktikum in Edinburgh bei Familie Jantzen. Thomas und Verena sind beides Pastor*innen der deutschen Gemeinde für Schottland und Nordostengland. Ich begleite die beiden bei den Aufgaben, die Sinn ergeben und darf den Rest meiner Zeit ganz frei verbringen bevor wir dann Abends alle zusammen essen, was ein sehr schönes Ritual ist. ☺️

      So, und jetzt zu heute: Ich habe morgens wieder mit Verena und Thomas gefrühstückt und habe beim Planen für die nächste Zeit zugehört. ✨
      Und dann bin ich mit ein bisschen Verlaufen auf den Berg (!) Arthur‘s Seat geklettert (!). 🏔 Das war eine tolle Aussicht! Und es war anstrengend, aber ich freue mich, dass ich es gemacht habe. ☺️🫠

      Beim Runterlaufen habe ich mich auch kurz verlaufen, bin aber an schönen kleinen Seen und auch dem Holyroodpalace (dem königlichen Sitz in Schottland) vorbeigekommen. 👑      Read more
