      Changing the Guard

      August 21, 2023 in England ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

The Changing of the Guard is the official ceremony when the Foot Guards currently guarding the monarchy (the Old Guard) are released from their duty, to be replaced with new soldiers (the New Guard).

Whilst Kings had always had an army of men protecting them, it wasn’t an official institution until Henry VII made the Royal Body Guard a permanent job role. This means that these soldiers have been guarding Kings and Queens for over 520 years – in other words, they’re pretty good at their jobs.

The Old Guard hands over the responsibility for protecting the palace to the New Guard – along with a ceremonial set of keys to the palace. This is officially known as Guards Mounting.

The King's Life Guard, mounted on immaculately groomed horses with swords drawn and breastplates shinning in the sun, can be seen at Horse Guards.

Horse Guards, named after the troops who have protected the Sovereign since the Restoration of King Charles II in 1660, is today the official entrance to Buckingham Palace and St James's Palace.

The King's Life Guard change on Horse Guards Parade, which was originally the courtyard in the middle of Henry VIII’s Royal Palace of Whitehall, and is now the ceremonial parade ground used for royal and ceremonial events throughout the year.

Royal Academy e mais umas voltinhas

      December 29, 2023 in England ⋅ 🌙 8 °C

      “Home sweet home”

      Sightseeing

      August 5, 2022 in England ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Nachdem ich gestern überhaupt nicht fit war und im Hostel geblieben bin, war heute ein sehr laufintensiver Tag. London - Day 1

      July 29, 2023 in England ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Up and about this morning. Straight to the Hop-on Hop-off bus. We covered a lot of places. The photos below are of, in order:
The River Thames, Tower of London, Big Ben,
      Gate to Buckingham Palace,
      Trafalgar Square.

There are thousands of people here. The line-up to the Tower of London was huge.
We are heading back out tonight to have another look.

We met up with a friend, Rev Betty, from Australia who we haven’t seen for years which was lovely.

      London - Day 2

      July 30, 2023 in England ⋅ 🌧 18 °C

Today we took the train to Herne Bay to meet up with Wayne’s friends, Paul and Hayley, who he has been chatting on Skype with for twenty years. We also met Hayley’s daughter Kristy, her husband Sam and their little baby Alex. The countryside is beautiful and the fish and chips by the sea was lovely. Thanks so much Paul and Hayley for your hospitality. We had a great time.

The Clock Tower, (photo below), is believed to be one of the earliest purpose-built, free-standing clock towers in the United Kingdom. It now serves as a memorial to the fallen of the Second Boer War.

Back at the hotel now planning what we’ll do tomorrow.

      London - Day 2

      July 31, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Out and about today having another look around. We went to Platform 9 3/4 at King Cross Station to see if we could board the Hogwarts Express - no luck today I think it decided to go without us. Went shopping at the Harry Potter Shop for Betty (aka Casey) and Audrey (aka Mikayla).

We then wandered around the area where our motel is, looking at all the different touristy things and visited a souvenir shop - I love souvenir shops.

There are literally thousands of people here and the traffic makes Sydney driving look easy.

We had a day of sun, wind, rain then back to sunny and windy. Days are about 20 degrees which is just nice.

We had afternoon tea in the little coffee shop in the hotel. Shared a raspberry and custard tart and a cappuccino each. Check out the hanging cup and saucer display hanging from the ceiling of the shop (picture below). It’s so cute but I’d hate to be cleaning it. Would you like me to bring you one home Sandra?

      London - Day 3

      August 1, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

Up and off this morning to meet our Tour Director and check in for our Tour which starts tomorrow.

We then jumped on the hop-on hop-off bus again for another tour of the city. This time we got off at Buckingham Palace. Wow what an impressive building. Apparently King Charles didn’t get the email we were coming and to prepare the High Tea as he was not in residence. How rude!!!

At the front of Buckingham Palace are four Guard Boxes, when the King is in residence all four of these have guards in them. Today there were only two. This indicates the King has left the building.

Below is some photos for you to view. I also included a video of the Guard change at one of Guard Boxes.

Just down the road from the Palace we stopped at a little cafe and had bruschetta and a milkshake for lunch. Omg those milkshakes were to die for. I haven’t tasted one as good in a very long time.

Back on the bus and head back to our Hotel which took longer than normal thanks to the amount of traffic.

      Another great day.

      Day -1 in London

      April 19, 2023 in England ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

The flight from Doha to London was good. For my first travellers tip: don't bother with lounge access if you have a short stop over. I only had 3 hours between planes and wasted my money. The weather in London is lovely, though I had to laugh when I walked out of the terminal and it was raining (very short and very gentle). Managed to navigate both ticket collection and the two trains I needed to catch to Victoria Station. Then I found my accommodation easily - thank you, Google maps. I'm about 15 minutes walk from Buckingham Palace, so I headed straight there after I dropped my bag off. Preparations are well underway for the London marathon.Read more

You know when you are in London......

      May 29, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

You know when you're in London when you see...........( photos)........

Hey Arfer, you seen anything of Graeme?

I haven't Terrance, I haven't! Thought he might have called at the Safari club for a pint of Ruddles and to off-load some expired Immigration permits he had from 1986.

Reason asking Arfer is that Delboy said Graeme wanted to rent the Reliant Robin.

I hope Delboy charged him a pretty quid Terrance. He never can trust those Colonials to deliver it back in one piece.

It's been a hard days night........

      May 30, 2023 in England ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

....and I've been sightseeing like a dog...........

My first full day in London and I had to make a stop at Abbey Road Studios. While tours of the studio were not running, I did the famous walk across that crossing and visited the gift store.

After checking out Abbey Road, I went to the Natural History museum. Whoever would have thought that such a museum of old bones, rocks, and skeletons would hold so much interest. I had to queue for 2 hrs to get in the door, and then it was a " bun fight" to get around inside. Altogether I spent 3 hrs there and could go back for more. I saw the oldest and largest complete skeleton of a dinosaur ever discovered, and that only occurred in 2014 in Argentina. It has only recently gone on display. It's called a Titanosaur. It's massive, and you wouldn't want that running through the Redwood bush in Tawa... NZ got a mention as to some very old rocks, etc, and I saw some of the worlds biggest uncut diamonds and jewels. The museum was just amazing. I was fascinated that Britain has so many mineral deposits that they are trying to mine for electric car batteries.

Speaking of cars, I passed by the Lamborghini sales office, and they also sold Maseratis as a side line. Very nice!

Those excertions filled my day, I forgot about crowds in London, the time on the underground and busses and those queues!
