    Driving to Cornwall

October 18, 2017 in the United Kingdom ⋅

Bleak wet day for our drive south to Cornwall. Morning stop at Weston-super-Mare, strange name for a town but a lovely seaside town south of Bristol. Amazingly they have a sand castle competition running all summer. Lunch at Port Isaac, a small fishing port on the west Cornwall coast (also the little town where Dr Martin is set and filmed)- I had a great lobster sandwich.Read more

    Doc Martin fan

October 18, 2017 in the United Kingdom ⋅

We set off from Bath at 8am to get a good start to the day as we had plans to visit quite a few places on our way to Penzance today. Best laid plans as they say! Peak hour traffic, an accident and a GPS that insists on sending us on narrow one lane roads put us back by a couple of hours so we had to bypass Lynmouth, Lynton and Allerford. We had a breakfast stop at Weston-super-Mare, a lovely seaside town south west of Bristol, and got to see what remained of their Summer sand-sculptures. The town has a great pier too and quite a nice sandy beach and, although it was an overcast slightly wet visit, you could imagine what a nice holiday spot it would be in Summer. We then set course for the Doc Martin location, Port Isaac on the Atlantic coast of north Cornwal, which Alan and I were excited to see being fans of the TV show. It didn't disappoint. What a charming village! Final destination, Penzance, our home for three nights (two days). The drive to our door was down a very narrow but long street with barely enough room for one car but somehow Alan managed to miss all the parked cars. Mind you he had to drive half road half footpath to do it! Well done Al.Read more

    Driving to Penzance

April 3, 2017 in the United Kingdom ⋅

After leaving London and the stop at Stonehenge, the driving got much easier. Less traffic and pretty countryside and towns to pass through. I stopped at one little village and grabbed a coffee from an old hotel. It had a fire roaring in a snug like room and I was tempted to just sit for a while. But the road beckoned and I was happy to get to Penzance just before dark. The bed and breakfast is very nice and the owners welcoming. A quick meal at a local Thai restaurant and then I was soon tucked up in bed.Read more

    Where it really all began

April 4, 2017 in the United Kingdom ⋅

Some of you may know that I was born in Penzance Cornwall fifty mumble mumble years ago. This morning I visited Penzance hospital and also the house and village that my dad grew up in called Pendeen. I remembered the address somehow and found the lovely stone terrace house nestled in the narrow lane just as I recalled it (from a visit at 10 yrs old). I chatted to a newer resident and she said many of the old traditional houses were being bought by "city folk" who can telework these days. I know nana would have been pleased that her old house is still the original stone and not painted bright blue or reclad like some of the neighbours. Apparantly the old ways of village life is disappearing as it is in many places as technology shrinks the distances.Read more

After a VERY trying day we are arrived in Penzance, which looks very neat and nice.

A walk along the promenade and fish and chips finished the day, which featured a magical mystery tour diversion to absolutely bloody nowhere, getting lost in a maze of back country lanes, and almost getting bogged in field that wasn't actually at the edge of hell - but you could sure see it from there. It took us about 7 hours of driving to relocate about 200 miles. Car is looking a bit the worse for wear, thank goodness we took the full insurance!!!Read more
