      5. Tag USA - Good Morning Portland (ME)

      September 24, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

    • Day 38

      ME - Portland

      October 1, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

      Our last day in Maine.
We joined a walking tour to explore the largest city in the state.

Portland was created in 1786 even if there were settlements in the bay as early as 1632. It was made state capital in 1820 when Maine was established as a state.

First thing to note are extortionate, sky high parking charges despite seemingly lots of parking being available. It gives the impression that the city wants to keep cars out and instead have more cruise ship visitors. Having a big cruise ship in town, the area around the old port is just jam-packed with people queueing for boat excursions, city tours on funny looking vehicles or 'Holy Donuts'. Imagine more of them 🫣

Portland's motto is "Resurgam" ("I will rise again" as the Phoenix from the Ashes), reflecting the city's resilience after four catastrophic fires from 1690 to 1886. No surprise that the city seal depicts a phoenix rising from ashes.

The last fire destroyed 2,000 buildings and left 75% of the population homeless. Hence Portland has been rebuilt in sturdy stone Victorian style houses.

With lots of the historic houses being destroyed since, Portland feels like a mismatch of styles.

All in all, we didn't think much of Portland. However, I picked up a few interesting titbits
      👆Holy Donut - it's a craze!!
The Holy Donut is a modern-day Maine phenomenon — donuts made from genuine Maine potatoes. Basically, it's a creative used of mashed potatoes. And the queues outside the store are phenomenal too.
👆Lobsters - are big business in Maine and the biggest export item handled by the Portland Customs House. Everybody can obtain a license to fish for lobsters - permit costs about 500 dollars per year and one can't have more than one crew to protect family businesses.
There are stringent regulations which size of lobster can be kept and which has to be thrown back.
Any lobster with eggs under its belly has to be marked (as reproducing) and thrown back.
It's only after WWII that lobster became a delicacy
👆 In 1851, Maine led the nation by passing the first state law prohibiting the sale of alcohol except for "medicinal, mechanical or manufacturing purposes." The law subsequently became known as the Maine Law as 18 states quickly followed.
👆Portland Rum Riot - In May 1855, rumors began to spread that Portland Mayor Neal Dow, an outspoken prohibitionist was keeping a large supply of alcohol in the city. Portland’s large Irish immigrant population were particularly vocal critics of the Maine Law, seeing it as thinly veiled racist attack on their culture (the Irish were known or suspected to be drunkards).
On the afternoon of June 2, a crowd began to gather outside the building where the spirits were being held. The crowd numbered about 200 by 5:00 p.m. and grew larger and more agitated as the day progressed as it became evident that the police had no immediate plans to seize or destroy the liquor.
Police were unable to deal with the growing mob, and Dow called out the militia. The exact details of the climax of the riot have been hotly debated. What is known is that after ordering the protesters to disperse, the militia detachment fired into the crowd on Dow's orders. One man, John Robbins, an immigrant and mate of a Maine sailing vessel from Deer Isle, was killed, and seven others were wounded. In a twist of irony, Dow was later prosecuted for violation of the Maine Law for improperly acquiring the alcohol. Dow was acquitted, but the event was a major contributing factor to the repeal of the Maine law in 1856.

So all of that in the attempt to stop people enjoying themselves. It's rather ironic that Portland today, has more breweries per capita than any other city of the US.

      Portland, Maine I

      October 14, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

As this was our first US port all passengers had to be cleared by US Customs & Border Protection. Although there were nearly 1800 passengers the process was well organized and went quickly. Once again we did a self-guided historical walk in the downtown area and along Commercial Street, the main tourist zone. We stopped for lunch at The Porthole Restaurant where we enjoyed what Maine is famous for....lobster, haddock fish & chips and fish tacos. The restaurant wasn’t fancy but the food was fresh and delicious. JS headed back to the ship; Ed wandered along the waterfront before going back to the ship; while Janet & I did a long walk along the Eastern Promenade that runs along Casco Bay. It was a very scenic area.Read more

      Maine

      August 19, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Our host from the airbnb we stayed in got us some nice pastries we could eat for breakfast, so nice of her!!! We took the pastries in the car and drove up to Camden. A little city, still on the coast of Maine. We sat in the harbour and ate the pastries. It was all foggy and it was gorgeous to see. Got some souvenirs and went on with our drive to Freeport. An outlet center. We shopped around for a bit and than drove further to Portland. That city is just so beautiful and nice. The atmosphere is so good and safe. Had such a good time walking around there. We drank something at a bar and went on with our walk to a new bar where we also had some nachos that we shared for dinner since we are all stuffed from our hamburgers that afternoon.Read more

      Portland (Maine)

      August 11, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

      Day 33 - A Roll & A Movie

      October 10, 2016 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

Today and tomorrow we are primarily relaxing and getting to know Portland, Maine.

This city has a nice feel and we found out that it was a national holiday which explained why it was particularly busy. It was also sunny in an autumnal kind of way. In direct sunlight, lovely, in the shade, positively chilly. We had no real plans and had a coffee as we strolled in to the centre. On the way, there was a minor altercation between two men. Of all the places we have visited, this sleepy city by the sea primarily aimed at vacationers seemed like the last place to witness a fight. It wasn't really a fight though and our view was partially blocked by a bus, more wildly thrown arms and a passerby intervening. By the time Alice and I had walked the length of the road and were near to the scene the police had arrived. Just as quickly as it had flared up it had died down.

Having safely made it to the harbour side we decided to have some lunch. I particularly wanted to try the lobster roll and we found a venue. It was lunchtime and was packed but it didn't take too long to get a seat. I had eaten lobster once before but it was in a rich sauce which I'm guessing defeats the object of eating a delicate tasting fish. The roll when it came was overflowing with lobster and had a single leaf of lettuce and the slightest of smears of mayonnaise. Alice also had the lobster roll and we both agreed they were very enjoyable.

We then walked along the main street popping in and out of tat shops and by the end of the road we weren't sure what to do with the rest of the afternoon. We were near to the cinema and decided on seeing a matinee. We saw Sully, the partly true story of the pilot who safely landed a plane on the Hudson Bay in 2009. A well made movie that manages to explain what happened that eventful morning whilst also squeezing in an epic battle of noble pilot versus scrupulously unreasonable NTSB.

For some unexplained reason we were both feeling tired and decided to buy some food and actually make dinner as we had been planning to do for a while. The chicken stirfry was amazing of course and we rounded off this lazy day with a Netflix and HBO Go marathon. The plan for tomorrow is to try and see more of Portland.

      USA Tour - Portland, Maine

      November 18, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 1 °C

Decided to just walk around the town today - Portland is only a small place, so it’s very easy to get around. I ended up around the harbour area today, which was so quiet as it’s all pretty much closed for the season, including a lot of restaurants. Eventually came across a bar called ‘Ri Ra’ which is an Irish bar that was actually quiet good. I drank miller lite, and watched the NFL like a local. I also got speaking to a couple from Boston who where up here on vacation for a few days. Real cool, super nice people who bought me a few drinks and also recommended other places to go in Boston if I ever go back (I go back in a few days 😂😂)

After all the beer was drunk I needed another walk around the town. I stumbled across a place called ‘duckfat’ which was awesome - ended up getting a huge plate of poutine ❤️❤️
