Ich habe meinen Weg zu den Nationalparks gemacht und die großen Städte erstmal hinter mir gelassen. Durch Zufall bin ich über diesen NationalPark "gestolpert". Badlands National Park liegt in South Dakota und lag auf dem Weg Richtung meinem eigentlichen Ziel: Mt. Rushmore. Da ich den "America the beautiful"-Pass habe (einmalig $80), sind einige Nationalparks, Monuments oder Parks, umsonst (Pass hat sich so gelohnt hat, da bereits nach dem dritten/vierten Park, die Kosten bereits gedeckt waren.) So auch dieser und zum Glück habe ich diesen Stopp gemacht. Das Wetter war nahezu perfekt, ok etwas sehr windig war es und dadurch etwas kälter, aber durch die Nebensaison, waren wenig Menschen vor Ort. Perfekte Bedingungen für Fotos. :) Auch das Wildlife zeigte sich ungeniert im Park. Eins ist allerdings alleine schwierig: Auto lenken und fotografieren, aber Aufgrund des wenigen Verkehrs, störte es niemanden, wenn man auf der Straße einfach mal stehen blieb.Read more

Les postes à venir seront dédiés à notre visite du National Park de Badlands dans le Dakota du Sud.
Nous avons découvert ce parc par hasard, mais heureusement que nous l'avons trouvé car le paysage était magnifique !
Voici un résumé de notre première journée avec le plus de détails possible.
On roule direction Badlands et déjà au loin on aperçois que le pays monotone de champs et vaches va bientôt changer.
On arrive sur le premier "View point", on descend du camping car et la vue est juste magnifique. On remonte sur Monsieur MegaFord et on reprend la route entre ces falaises et ces rochers étranges.
Deuxième stop, les trails (parcours), on décide d'en faire un pas trop long ni trop compliqué car il fait très chaud et nous n'avons pas encore les chaussures adaptées. Le paysage est toujours incroyable, on dirait qu'on est sur la lune.
Les rochers ont des mini cratères partout, il y a du sables blanc mais dur, la terre est craquelée par la chaleur et il y a pleins de petits cailloux partout (ils les appellent les "pop corn").
Après une petite heure, on arrive à bout de notre parcours et on reprend la route direction le camping primitif.
Sur la route on croise tout pleins de chiens de prairie et, attention, au loin premier Bison que l'on aperçoit puis un troupeau.
Arrivé en fin au camping, après avoir roulé sur des routes non goudronnées, Arnaud et moi sommes tout simplement émerveillé par ce camping au milieu de la nature.
Il n y a aucune barrière entre la nature et nous et d'ailleurs des Bisons sont déjà entrain de manger de l'herbe à quelques mètres de notre camping car. On profite pour aller faire un petit tour sans trop s'éloigner et après être revenu un bison femelle vient gratter sa tête à un poteau à 5 mètres de nous! C'est tellement impressionant que tous le camping regarde ce qu'il se passe.

What a busy day!

Headed to the Badlands in the morning. On the way, there were billboards evey mile or so for Wall Drugs. It was a Must See Attraction in the little town of Wall. It was actually mote of a mall that had grown out of a drugstore. It was about a city block long. They did have a camping goods store and I bought a flyswatter (cause there is constantly at least 1 fly annoying me while driving or relaxing in Vanette), a small purple backpack and a small salt & pepper shaker.

Then onto the Badlands. Jay wore her service dog vest and we did a couple of short walks. BUT as we were walking, I suddenly saw a huge long horn sheep sitting just ahead of us. It was so still I thought it was a statue...but then it saw Jay and stood up. IT DID NOT LOOK FRIENDLY! We slowly backed away. The rest of the tour was a driving tour!

Next we went to Mount Rushmore. It was interesting and we got a little exercise without wild animal threats. I was not all that impressed. It was smaller than I expected and not all that detailed. Could barely tell who was who.

So...headed south with no plan or idea where I would spend the night. I stopped at a FS Campground, they had 1 spot left.....but $30 for a site without any water & only a pit toilet, surrounded by RVs just didn't seem worth it. So I drove on.

It was already after 6 when I got to the Crazy Horse Memorial. They were still open and who knows when I might be back. I'm so gladi stopped. It is much larger than Rushmore and the detail is so much better. It may take another 50 to 100 years to finish it but the story is intriguing and the movie, visitor center are wonderful. The have a restaurant but it closes at 6:30 so I can't say if it is any good. I stayed for the veteran's memorial service and then the laser light show. The show wasn't all that good but the music was lovely.

I hit the road at 9pm and found a truckstop to sleep at.

Traveler Funny. So many of the students and teachers from Japan had to make it to Mount Rush more and were shocked we had never been. I would have picked Crazy Horse too!

After driving through seemingly endless fields of corn, then dozens of fields of wheat and sunflowers, we made it to Badlands National Park! And let me tell you, our second major national park did not disappoint. It's not the biggest or most exploration friendly park, so we were able to do the whole thing in about three hours. With the exception of seeing bison and doing a 10 mile hike, we saw and did everything. Though not seeing bison definitely wasn't for lack of trying! We got to see a couple of small herds of bighorn sheep, giant prairie dog towns and all of the giant, beautiful rock formations. On the way out, we stopped at Wall Drug (of course) and got our free water, 5¢ coffee, and homemade donuts! For those of you who haven't heard of Wall Drug, in the 1930's it was a failing drug store in the Godforsaken town of Wall, SD outside of the Badlands NP. They realized that the way to draw people to their store was to offer the hot, thirsty people driving through the badlands some free, ice cold water, and man did it work! It's a GIANT tourist trap now, so we were happy to be trapped for a little bit!Read more

Nach Rushmore am Vormittag, fahren wir nachmittsgs in die Badlands. Die Mondlandschaft ist beeindruckend. Schön warm wars auch mal wieder nach den kalten Tagen vom Yellowstone bis Buffalo.
