      South Lake Tahoe

      Because of the late snow in Washington, leading to a late start on trail, we’ve had to make the decision, like most SOBOs this year, to jump ahead to South Lake Tahoe to get through the Sierras before the snow hits and towns start closing down.

      We hitched a ride into Redding to do our town chores and get new gear for the colder weather and then rented a car and road tripped to South Lake Tahoe. Our packs are feeling super heavy again now with the required bear cans and additional clothes but excited for the new views. Hoping we can complete the whole section before things get too dangerous, then we will jump back up to northern Cali to complete the section we skipped.      Read more

      Halloween

      Jeg blekager det er så længe siden sidst I har fået et opslag, men nu har jeg endelig en dag hvor der ikke ern ogle planer. Så I dag er der belevet skrevet en del opslag jeg vil ligge op løbende. Billeder må i på facebook og se, hvor jeg også har en gruppe jeg har lagt lidt billeder op i.
      Tilbage i oktober oplevede jeg en rigtig amerikansk halloween. Jeg er jo ikke helt ”ung nok” til at gå fra dør til dør og sige ”trick or treat” så min oplevelse var en fest om aftenen. Herovre i villakvarterene bliver husene rigtig pyntet op til halloween og de fleste fordøre har skåret græskar ude foran døren med diverse halloween motiver. Ugen op til halloween var jeg inviteret hjem til en kandidat studerende som jeg havde et internship ved. Hun havde lavet mad til os, vi fik blandt andet græskar tærte til dessert, en obligatorisk ting omkring halloween og thanksgiving herovre. Hun havde også fået fat i græskar vi skulle skære, vi blev delt op i 3 hold. Vi lavede det traditionelle ansigt på vores græskar. Det var en hyggelig aften. Jeg købte også et græskar hjem til også som jeg skar, selvfølgelig skulle vi også være rigtig amerikanske og have et græskar udenfor døren. Om aftenen, lørdag i halloween weekenden ville vi så ud og prøve at finde en fest. Min rumbo Jamie, fik malet sig selv som et rådyr i hovedet og havde fået et gevir hun kunne tage på, jeg blev malet som et spøgelse, dog troede de fleste jeg skulle forstille jokeren. :D Herovre har de en masse sororities og fraternaties, lige som man ser i film, så jeg tænkte en af deres fester var da noget der skulle prøves. Dog fandt vi hurtigt ud af køerne var uendelig lange til disse fester. En af dem havde endda politi der gik og tjekkede ID og her var det tydeligt at størstedelen af gæsterne var under 21, så med alt det tumult og lange køer besluttede vi os for at gå ned i byen og se om en af barene havde en halloween fest. Vi fandt et pizzaria/bar hvor der var gang i en halloween fest. Det var en sjov aften, jeg fandt dog hurtigt ud af at halloween blandt unge mennesker ikke (som jeg forventede) gik ud på at have en god udklædning, blandt pigerne gik det ud på at finde et kostume med mindst mulig beklædning, vi så piger rende rundt i bikini. Det var intrassant at prøve halloween herovre, de har bestemt et anderledes forhold til alkohol og fest end vi i Danmark har. Glæd jer, næste opslag bliver om Thnaksgiving! :D      Read more

      Scramento - Lac Tao

      Nous quittons Andrew le matin car il va prendre son avion, le taxi nous dépose dans une petite ville à proximité. Nous allons au Mc Donald pour profiter d’internet, des toilettes et d’un énième hamburger haha !

      Nous trouvons un bon plan ! On va dans un fitness pour faire « une journée d’essai gratuite ». On y fait du sport et on se rend compte qu’il faut qu’on ralentisse sur les fast food quand on voit les kilo de gras qu’on transpire haha ! Il y a hammam, un sauna et une piscine. On en ressort tout neuf !

      Kacha nous rejoint après être allé chercher la voiture de location, et c’est parti pour l’aventure !

      Nous avons loué la voiture pour 7 jours en se disant qu’on allait passer quelques jours dans le parc Yosemite. Nous prévoyons de faire du camping, du coup on part au Walmart acheter le nécessaire 😊 Une fois dans le magasin on se demande ce dont on a besoin, qu’elle température il fera la nuit etc. Là je pose la question qui deviendra mythique « Did you check the wheater ? » On se regarde « heuu non ? ». On regarde et on se rend compte qu’il y a une tempête de neige exactement là où on est en train d’aller !! 🤣 Mais genre routes fermées, -3°C la nuit et des alertes ! 🤣 Des fois on est vraiment trop con ! (C’est censé être le début de l’été avec un temps chaud et sec !) Du coup on se retrouve un peu désemparé, on achète quand même de la bouffe et on part ne sachant pas trop quoi faire ! Il est déjà tard, nous roulons 2h et nous arrêtons sur une petite aire pour la nuit. Effectivement il fait super froid et il y a beaucoup de vent ! Moi et Naty dormons dans la voiture (on pensait dormir dans les hamacs 🤣). Anton et Kacha dorment dans la tente.

      On se réveil le matin avec la pluie, on se dit quand même « qu’es qu’on fout la » haha ! On repart et on décide de ne pas aller au parc Yosemite mais de passer par le haut (Sacramento et de traverser la montagne à cette hauteur). Anton trouve un Couch surfing à Sacramento, génial ! On arrive chez une fille super (Andrea), elle nous fait visiter la vieille ville qui ressemble aux villes de mineurs dans les films de cowboy et on passe boire une bière dans un véritable saloon !

      Le soir on se fait des tacos avec les boîtes de conserve qu’on a acheté, terrible !
      Pour la petite histoire, Anton et Kacha ont acheté une quantité énorme de boites de conserve et les mangent froides 🤣, je n’y aurais pas pensé mais finalement c’est pas mal ! Et Anton achète un paquet de 80 tortillas, elles nous poursuivront pendant longtemps haha !

      C’était super de pouvoir dormir chez elle car, la nuit, il a plu hyper fort ! On repart pour traverser la chaine de montagne et rejoindre le lac Tao. Au fur et au mesure qu’on monte, on voit de plus en plus de neige jusqu’à arriver dans des paysages qui nous font penser à la suisse en plein hiver ! Là on découvre le feu pour chauffer les boites de conserve ! 🤣      Read more

      Sacramento

      Wir verlassen San Francisco im Morgengrauen und tatsächlich liegt heute die Stadt komplett in ihrem berüchtigten Bett aus Nebel. Über die Baybrigde geht die Fahrt jetzt nach Nordosten zum Lake Tahoe. Wir halten vormittags im sonnigen Sacramento, schlendern über einen der vielen Farmers Markets der Stadt und kaufen für die nächsten Tage ordentlich ein. Es ist herrlich warm, 28Grad morgens um 10h, die Mädels führen ihre neuen Flip Flops aus SF aus und suchen eifrig die leckersten Erdbeeren, tollsten Melonen und besten Zucchini aus. Im Park daneben gibts noch ein Picknick mit duftigen Cinnamonrolls und eine Runde Spielplatzturnerei für die Mädels. Dann fahren wir mit der dicken Minna immer weiter hinauf in die Sierra Nevada und stoppen erst wieder beim Viewpoint auf den sagenumwobenen Donner Lake auf 6000f. Die Landschaft hier ist wieder ganz neu: Granitfelsen, Pinien und schneebedeckte Gipfel und dazu flirrende Hitze.Read more

      Napa Valley

      Eerste dag van onze roadtrip, We missen de temperaturen van San Francisco al.. Dan maar weer afkoelen in 1 van de prachtige wijnhuizen. We hadden meteen de beste uitgekozen. Er zijn 4 wijnhuizen die schuimwijn maken ,tussen ongeveer 400 verschillende wijnhuizen, en wij hadden er 1 van uitgekozen.
      We hebben niet alleen aan de alcohol gezeten.. Nee hoor! We zijn ook naar de Old Faithful Geyser gaan kijken. Om de 10 min. spuit hij kokend heet water 20m de lucht in. Prachtig om te zien, alleen.. Veel te heet!      Read more

      Napa valley wine tasting

      I booked an airbnb in Napa a few days ago just because I saw a really cheap one for the area. Afterwards reading up about it and talking with Evi and Hugo, we realised we probably would have been better off going to the neighbouring Sonoma region. Napa is the super famous, fancy and expensive wine region, while right next to it Sonoma has similar wines, but a more laid back atmosphere and about half the price (even one of the sommeliers in Napa itself tod us to go there instead) . But anyway the airbnb was booked, so it had to be Napa after all. We considered renting bikes, but Seamus wouldn't have wanted to drink that much even then (still trying to get his stomach to be normal again) so he just drove us around and I did most of the drinking. We chose an amazing time to visit, as 2 days after the torrential rain, the whole place was ridiculously green. Like greener than Scotland green. There were also all kinds of wild flowers growing here and there. So basically Napa valley is a 30 mile long valley, about 5 miles wide at its widest. The sorrounding hills are all covered in forests, and the valley itself is covered with grape plantations. There's 400-600 little vineyards all around, and all of them offer tastings. Unfortunately while about 10 years ago these used to be free, now they al charge a fee, which at "cheap" places start at 20 dollars from having a small tasting of 4 wines, but easily start from 40-50 at others. We still drove in to multiple wineries (even though we only consumed wine at 2 of them) as all of them have beautiful setup so it was always nice to stop and look around. In the middle of green wine fields, all the houses are beautiful (in a variety of styles, from super modern ones, to cute wood houses, to tuscan villas) they all have big terraces to hang out, try wines or have picnics. We did a tasting flight (that's what they call them apparently) at Black Stallion vineyard, where the sommelier's grandparents were Hungarian, so we bonded over his wish of visiting Hungary and his love of bikaver. Our favourite place was Honig vineyard, I could spend days sitting in their garden. The girls serving us were super friendly and we talked with them for a long time. One of the girls got married in Scotland, on the island of his "husband's clan" ! Here we managed to buy a half bottle of wine instead of the tasting, which was actually better value. They kept bringing out thoughtful stuff, like a cute book on the dogs of the area's vineyards, or just to check on us and chat. Even if the wine was expensive, the experience was definitely worth it for the day!Read more

      On the way from Eureka to Sacramento we chose to drive a few kilometers on the Ave of the Giants to see a bit more of the Redwood trees. We thought we would be a bit more used to the sizes by then but as the trees started passing us we were still as amazed as the day before. We spent some more time looking at them and photographing them before continuing our journey. About halfway we stopped in Willits to have lunch, and since the temperature was around 33 degrees we decided to treat ourselves with ice cream. After being on the road for 6h we reached Sacramento and our motel. We chilled for a bit and then went out to see the historic old town before ordering and picking up food from The Old Spaghetti Factory. We enjoyed the dinner in our room and chilled for the rest of the night.
