      Evening on the cruise by Matt

      We showered and chilled out in our air con rooms with a view. A couple of enterprising ladies circled the ship in a small motor boat offering beers and snacks, but happy hour was round the corner so we politely ignored them. We headed to the top deck to watch the sunset over beers and cocktails, 3 for 2, whilst Millen joined a spring roll making class with his new friend, Yash.

      Utterly relaxed by the serenity of Halong Bay, aided by a few drinks, we admired the view from the top deck as the sun set over the bay. Dinner was a sort of Vietnamese tasting menu, with about 6 courses, including Oysters! The chef then came out of the kitchen carrying a big pan containing shrimps. With great drama he threw in some vodka and set light to the pan, the flames almost touching the ceiling. Then he slammed on the lid, creating clouds of steam that filled the room. Once the culinary performance was over, we each got a shrimp, which was quite nice.

      After dinner some of us tried their luck at squid fishing. Eashan managed to get some of the boatmen to teach him Chinese chess, similar to the Western version but with fewer pieces and an even more restricted king. He was more successful than the squid fishermen but I suspected they let him win 😉      もっと詳しく

      Morning on the cruise by Arushi

      This morning my alarm went off at 5.02 and I opened my eyes to see Millen’s silhouette illuminated by the early morning light filtering through. The three of us opened the curtain to the most spectacular sunrise any of us five have ever seen in our entire lives! It was unreal! The sky was so indescribably beautiful, with streaks of colour painted so delicately against the blue sky. It was breathtaking and could easily be compared to the couples of a campfire with the flaming reds and oranges.

      Millen hurried to wake mum and dad up, as Eashan and I made our way up to the sun deck where we were immersed in the sunrise. We both stayed up there for an hour watching the sky dance around whilst Millen was showering and getting ready (and most likely playing some sort of game).

      It truly was such a magical morning, sharing the beautiful view in our pjs out at sea. A little after 6, the Tai Chi started , where we were joined by Millen, Mum and Dad as well. I’m still not entirely sure what exactly all the motions are (to me they seemed a bit like the sort of moves you might see in interpretive dance), but nevertheless it was still so lovely to stretch our bodies under the first rays of light.

      After a “light breakfast” (more like a full breakfast buffet including pancakes, toast and cereal), we then got to go kayaking at 7.30 around an island next to our boat. We had so much fun racing and splashing each other in the warm water. Millen set off with Yash (they often seemed to find themselves at a close proximity to some rocks), Eashan was with me which left Dad and Mum together. We paddled for about an hour before ditching the kayaks back at the boat for a last dive and swim in the water, still marvelling at the temperature of it.

      We then returned back to the boat to shower and check out before brunch on board as we sailed back towards the port to leave this beautiful bay.      もっと詳しく

      Kayaking in Ha Long Bay

      We really enjoyed the mini kayaking trip in Ha Long Bay. We skipped the fishing village and went into a serene little bay to listen to some kind of bird laugh at us. There were fishing ladies doing something with the little baskets.

      I had to take the life jacket off almost immediately because it was WAY too large for me haha but that wasn't nearly as egregious as you going ashore to pee!

      Zwei Tage Halong Bay und Kommunismus

      Zum ersten mal mit einem Cruise 🚢 ship unterwegs. Zwei Übernachtungen im UNESCO Welterbe. Die Berge, die aus dem Meer herausragen sind sehr beeindruckend. Wir lassen uns durch eine verwunschene Höhle rudern. Auf dem Schiff gibt es reichlich essen und trinken. Happy Hour ab 18:00h.
      Am zweiten Tag fahren wir auf die Insel Cat Ba und machen dort eine kleine Fahrradtour. Wir bekommen eine footmassage mit Fischen. Das kitzelt, aber alle überschüssige Haut ist fort.😀
      Später fahren wir mit Kajaks um die Berge herum, die verschiedene Namen tragen. Benannt nach ihrer Form und Aussehen.

      Diese Ausflüge und auch sonst alles sind erstaunlich gut durchgetaktet und wir fragen uns wie das funktioniert. Wir erfahren von unseren Tourguides, dass die Regierung überall die Hand und ein Auge drauf hat. Alle Ausflüge laufen nach dem selben Prinzip ab und Abweichungen sind unerwünscht. Wer nicht Regierungstreu ist, hat keine Aufstiegschancen. Die, die dem Staat treu dienen bekommen Privilegien.
      Ein Tourguide hatte einen Fluchtversuch nach Hong Kong gewagt und kam dafür ins Gefängnis. An seinem Wadenbein zeugt eine Tätowierung in Form einer Nummer davon. Weil er einigermaßen gut english kann wird er sein Leben lang Tourguide bleiben.      もっと詳しく

      Halong Bay

      Diese Nacht plagt uns noch der Jetlag, sodass wir gegen 3 Uhr hellwach sind. Gerade wieder eingeschlafen klingelt der Wecker und es geht mit dem Bus in die schöne Halong Bucht. Unterwegs halten wir an einer Perlenfarm und anschließend fahren wir auf eines der zahlreichen Schiffe.
      Unmengen an Touristen und ein Schiff größer und luxuriöser als das Andere. In dem Wissen, dass sowas wie eine Kreuzfahrt eigentlich gar nicht unser Ding ist, lassen wir uns für eine Nacht auf den Luxus ein. Es gibt Unmengen an Essen und zu unserem Glück sind nur wenig Leute mit auf dem Schiff. Unser Highlight ist die Kanufahrt durch die großen dschungelbewachsenen Kalkberge und für Nora der Sprung von Deck ins Meer.      もっと詳しく

      Day 2 - Halong Bay

      Dinner last night was fabulous. The service and staff are so attentive and make you feel so special. Today is our second day on our Halong Bay cruise. When we booked, we had a choice between a one night or two night cruise. At 6:30 a.m., was a Tai Chi session on the top deck. Yes, I did Tai Chi, lol. It was actually a decent workout. We went for breakfast at 8:00 then we were scheduled to be shuttled to another boat called the Paradise Explorer for the days expeditions, which is a smaller boat with a main level dining room and a top viewing deck. This was only for poeple who were staying the two nights, Another 2 couples from another boat were supposed to join us but they canceled, so it was just Chris and I for the day on this boat, the guide was a nice 23 year old named Alex and he spent the whole day with us, they also cooked lunch just for us too, it was great! The first stop was the Hang Tien Ong cave, then we stopped at a fishing village, and we were allowed to kayak around for 45 minutes, a nice, relaxing day. We are back at our main boat now. The ship is loaded with new passengers, and there are 31 suites on the ship. We just finished some wine getting ready for dinnerもっと詳しく

      Halong Bay

      Während unseres Aufenthalts in Hanoi fuhren wir für 2 Tage und eine Nacht nach Halong Bay im Norden Vietnams. Diese Bucht ist für seine hunderten Inseln bekannt. Übersetzt bedeutet der Name so viel wie "herabsteigender Drache", denn nach der Legende nach stieg ein Drache aus dem Himmel hinab und erschuf diese Bucht, um die Vietnamesen zu schützen. Wie uns unser lustiger Tourguide, welchen sich uns nur mit seinem Alias "Mr. Ben" vorstellte, erklärte, könne man wenn man Glück hat diesen Drachen in der Bucht sichten... nach voller Ausnuztung der Happy Hour versteht sich :P Wir haben hier einen kurzen Trip auf einem Boot gebucht. Dafür wurden wir am Montag Morgen von unserem Hostel in einem sehr geräumigen Shuttle abgeholt und fuhren nach Halong, jedoch nicht direkt, denn wir machten kurz vor dem Ziel halt an einer Perlenfarm bzw. -manufaktur. Es war nicht schwer zu erkennen, dass es ganz offensichtlich eine Touristenfalle war. Ein kurzer Blick auf Google Maps und meine Vermutung bestätigte sich. Es stellte sich heraus, dass alle Halong Bay Touren hier kurz halt machen, vermeindlich für eine Toilettenpause. Im Sekundentakt kamen hier Shuttles mit Touristen an, die in einer Pseudoführung durch die Manufaktur gejagt wurden. Da wir jedoch natürlich nichts kauften, gingen wir, da wir was über Perlen und Muscheln lernten, nicht ganz leer aus dem Ganzen raus. Nach dem gezeungenen Halt ging es dann endlich an den Hafen, an welchen wir ein kleines Boot bestiegen, welches uns zu unserem Schiff fuhr. Dieses im Vergleich zu den anderen "Kreuzfahrt"schiffen relativ kleine Schiff verfügte über vier Etagen. Wir wurden mit einem 5 Gängemenü begrüßt nach welchem wir gleich wieder mit einem kleineren Schiff hinaus in die Bucht aufbrachen. Unsere kleine Tourgruppe stieg dann auf kleine Holzboote um, die von Einheimischen mittels Paddeln angetrieben wurden. Es ging für uns durch eine kleine Höhle. Trotzdem das Wetter während unseres gesamten Aufenthalts aufgrund von Bewölkung eher schlecht war, war die Höhle und auch die Bucht an sich schön. Nach der kleinen Bootstour hatten wir noch die Möglichkeit schwimmen zu gehen. Dies nutzten wir natürlich aus. Am Abend tanzten wir auf dem Deck noch mit einer indischen Familie im Kreis, sehr lustig xD Am nächsten Morgen gingen wir früh in der Bucht paddeln. Nach dem Brunch ging es dann auch schon wieder zurück nach Hanoi.

      Die kleine Tour war dem geringen Preis entsprechend ganz okay. Die Bucht war schön, hat mich jedoch nicht aus den Socken gehauen. Dies könnte jedoch daran liegen, dass wir während unseres Aufenthalts kein einziges Mal die Sonne zu Gesicht bekamen. Insgesamt war es jedoch dank unseres Guides ganz lustig und trotzdem schön, entspannend und (wenn auch nur geringfügig) informativ.

      Heute war unser letzter Tag in Hanoi. Wir besuchten das berühmte Hotel Hilton Hanoi Gefängnis, welches heute ein Museum ist, sowie Trainstreet, eine kleine Gasse mit Läden durch welche ein Zug fährt. Leider durchfuhr kein Zug die Straße während wir vor Ort waren.

      Insgesamt war Hanoi eine sehr interessante Stadt mit einer packenden Geschichte. Uns gefiel es hier ganz gut. Für den langen Aufenthalt ist diese Stadt aufgrund des Smogs und der schlechten Luft jedoch nicht. Jetzt geht es weiter nach Hue... in einer 14 Stündigen Overnight-Train Fahrt :D      もっと詳しく

      Halong Bay … on a 5 star cruise!

      Fun fact, there are 600+ cruise boats on Halong bay! They get to take 1 of 4 routes through Halong Bay and Lan Ha bay.

      We decided we would splurge to see the world famous Halong bay via cruise boat with Sena cruises. It was an experience with lots of food and random activities like a cooking class and tai chi as well as kayaking, squid fishing, karaoke and a small boat tour through some caves. After having spent the last few weeks backpacking, a room on a fancy boat with fancy people and fancy dining really made us feel like royalty! We had our own little outdoor seating area from our room and a very nice bathroom.

      It was a nice experience but probably one that both of us thought would be a once in a lifetime activity that we needed to do! We prefer our simple life of adventure!      もっと詳しく

      Day 6

      Today we bade farewell to Hanoi, as we finished packing up and had breakfast before being picked up for our 2 hour drive to Halong Bay. It’s a good thing we’re organised because the driver came before 8am as expected. After driving around and collecting two more couples, we left the craziness of Hanoi before reaching the outskirts, and then the open countryside of Vietnam.

      The drive was mostly uneventful but just before reaching the port area, all the drivers made a stop at a pearl outlet (cleverly referenced to as a toilet stop). The toilet stop wasn’t even necessary considering we were only seven minutes from the port! We obviously didn’t buy any pearls, so we joined the tourists from the other 30+ buses in the organised chaos until we continued on.

      Once at the port, we were dropped off at the Genesis cruise desk to check in and pay for the cruise. We needed to wait about half an hour before taking a boat out to our cruise, so I walked to a pop-up shop nearby which was selling drinks and snacks. Since there weren’t any great options, I bought some peanuts to tie us over until lunchtime.

      The transfer boat was an experience, as we all donned life jackets for the half hour journey to our cruise. The ships director Sunny provided some commentary regarding Halong Bay (a UNESCO protected sight) as well as the cruise itself. Upon arrival we were each given a welcome juice before making our way to our cabins. The cruise has two levels of cabins, complete with a dining room and deck on top with a bar.

      We like our cabin a lot, with a king size bed, huge bathtub and good sized bathroom. The balcony is also great, which can be seen through the panorama window while lying in bed. Whilst enjoying the view, we noticed a huge pole that seemed to be coming from the cabin next to us going down towards the water. We assumed they weren’t fishing from over their balcony, but got a surprise when we saw a Vietnamese couple in a speedboat selling snacks over the side of the boat! The long stick was so money and items could be transferred to the cruise passengers. They asked if we would like anything, but apart from being amused, we politely declined.

      After settling in, we went upstairs to the dining room for lunch. Since this cruise only takes about 40 people, the dining room was small but elegant. We were seated next to a Dutch couple, Simone and Robin, who are similarly doing a tour throughout Vietnam. The lunch was amazing as there were so many different courses delivered. Since I’m pescatarian, they replaced the other meat options I had with calamari and fish. And with Vietnamese coffee too!

      After lunch, we tried to have a nap in our room, but a PA, phone call and door knocking reminded us that there was going to be an excursion to see nearby caves via rowboat. We joined about half of the other passengers and were transferred to a nearby pier where we were separated into boats of 8. We loved the cruise - the guide was funny and we saw the limestone cliffs and even monkeys. The tour was even more complete by the Vietnamese hats we wore during the excursion.

      Upon arrival back onto the cruise, we showered and changed before going to the top deck for happy hour. The weather has been a bit hazy but I think it’s a nice change from stifling heat anyway! I didn’t drink much at happy hour, but just being able to enjoy the scenery and company whilst cruising Halong Bay was wonderful.

      Just like lunch, dinner did not disappoint as there were at least five courses of food. Some of the dishes I had included lobster and two types of fish, so I definitely got my fill of seafood. This cruise has definitely been a highlight so far, so I’m hoping we have many more like this.      もっと詳しく

      Hanoi

      Den ersten Tag in der Hauptstadt haben wir hauptsächlich damit verbracht Touren und Unterkünfte für die nächsten Tage zu buchen. Das war etwas anstrengend, da unsere ausgewählten Hostels alle entweder zu ranzig oder schon ausgebucht waren. Am späten Nachmittag hatten wir es dann allerdings geschafft und es ging für uns zum nächstgelegenen See. Dort haben wir noch ein bisschen entspannt und die letzten Sonnenstrahlen des Tages genossen. Ja, Sonne! In Hanoi war es Gott sei Dank wieder sehr viel wärmer! Das bleibt hoffentlich auch so 😊.もっと詳しく
