    Got covid at a bar crawl

    Sorry for the lack of posts recently. We went to a bar crawl on our first weekend here and ended up getting covid so spent the majority of last week doing nothing. The other day we emerged from the apartment for a day a sightseeing and saw the Charles Bridge, Prague's narrowest Street and a tower of books. All three were extremely busy and pretty underwhelming but if I didn't do them I'd feel guilty about it so it was still worth. While we were waiting in the queue for the tower of books I went for an explore and stumbled upon the main christmas markets of prague!! It was awesome, I didn't get many pictures because I was rushing to get back but it was so festive and there were people everywhere selling Christmas ornaments, gingerbreads and warm drinks. I also saw the astronomical clock again which I remembered being quite unremarkable from music tour. I was surprised to see its only about 5 metres off the ground, I remembered it being taller. The snow from the first week has all melted away now and today was the first day that our snowman had completely disappeared. I've been starting to see a lot of christmas tree markets getting set up over the past couple of days which is so sick. There's some great Asian food around our house which has been great while we've been sick, we've been able to buy a nice nourishing bowl of soup for $4. Last weekend we met up with a dude we met at the bar crawl (he's from Perth here working with his dad) and went to a rave which was super fun :)).

    Explored the christmas markets

    Today we went for a big walk around prague old town. The first thing we saw was the lennon wall which is a big wall covered in vibrant graffiti next to a john lennon themed Cafe, it was pretty busy so we didn't stay long but it was quite cool. Now that I'm getting out more I've started to notice lots of cool statues of people doing random things around the city. Today I saw one hanging from a power line and another one fishing from a watermill, it reminded me of the ones in Kalgoorlie! Most of the day was spent exploring a few of the Christmas markets. We were roaming around for ages but only ended up buying some mulled wine (worst we've had so far), the atmosphere at the markets was super fun and festive but the stuff they were selling was all pretty avg. We had Chinese again for dinner (at 3:30pm) and then went back to the apartment. Spencer went on a date late at night and I didn't feel like sitting around by myself so I went for a big walk to the Charles Bridge to see the old timey lanterns at night, it was a lovely walk but I forgot to get pictures of the bridge lol.もっと詳しく

    Eiffel tower, made eggnog, spencers bday

    Ever since I landed in prague I've been super keen to get a gingerbread man and try some eggnog and I'm pleased to report I have now done both of those things! I got the gingerbread man from the nicest smelling gingerbread shop while I was out looking for Christmas ornaments on a busy alley near the prague castle. The alley was a real quintessential euro road with winding cobblestones and cool buildings of all different heights. I spent all day perusing through the shops in the alley until I got to the end of the road where there was a great view of the city. The next day we walked up a huge hill near our house to get another good view of the city and then went out to an event coz it was spencers birthday the next day. Spencer slept for his entire birthday so I spent the day making eggnog with christie which was so so so delicious. Once spencer got up we went out for curry.もっと詳しく

    We went swimming in the river!!! (Pt1)

    Had the best day yesterday :). First thing we did was go out for a Turkish breakfast. I'd completely forgotten how much we loved the big spreads they did for breakfast in Turkey so when Ozge suggested we go I was so amped! This one wasn't quite as vast as the real thing but it was still so yum. I needed to go back to the ornament alley from the other day so after breakfast we set out walking there but got lost and ended up at the prague castle. The castle was real cool but the best bit was the Cafe at the end, it overlooked the whole city and the sky was so sunny and clear it turned out being the best view of the city so far! In the evening we went to the Charles Bridge to see a guy that dresses up in an old medieval costume to light the lanterns, it only happens at Christmas and seems like a pretty big deal. We only saw the end but there were like 100 people following the guy around and they gave him a huge round of applause when he finished. It was night at this point so we got dinner from the Christmas markets and then went to a sauna bar which was definitely the highlight of the day. It was on a boat and they let you swim in the river! The river water was so cold it was insane, the longest I spent in the water was like 30 seconds and by the end my whole body was contracting into a ball and I could barley move. We spent the night getting as warm as we could in the sauna and then running out to have competitions to see who could stay in the water the longest. I definitely didn't think I'd be swimming in the prague river this trip but I'm so stoked I got to! After that we went to another bar on the rivers edge, it had a massive glass circle as the door which was so cool, it was terrible at keeping the warm in tho ahah.

    Christmas eve and christmas

    Merry Christmas everyone!!!!

    Bit of a chill week this one, not too much happened. We went out for drinks to say goodbye to Ozge on thursday which ended up being quite an eventful night. We wanted to go to a bunch of bars and order as many weird drinks as we could. I had lots of strange euro spirits, a christmas tree pine needle flavoured beer, a negroni, a Cuba libre and some other cocktails I forgot the name of. At the end of the night we ended up at a club a few doors down from our apartment which we had never noticed before. It was filled with 30-40 year olds and was a pretty strange vibe but that was fine coz it meant we got to have a big, long last chat with Ozge.

    We wanted to make pavlova and eggnog for Christmas so on Christmas eve we set out to buy all the ingredients. What we originally expected to be an hour long errand ended up taking most of the day because all the big shopping centres in prague are closed from Christmas eve to boxing day. This meant we had to search through a bunch of corner stores slowly collecting all the stuff we needed. Eventually, the search for fresh berries took us back to the old town Christmas markets, it was absolutely stunning. The lights and the atmosphere felt so festive and we had a great time soaking it all in, which was lucky coz there were no berries so we walked all that way for nothing lol. On the way home we partook in a bit of shenanigans setting off fireworks and then spent the rest of the night cooking. Overall the cooking was a bit of a nightmare, spencer never got a whisk so we had to mix the egg whites for almost two hours with a fork and then i ate some cookies and got distracted while adding the spices to my eggnog which resulted in me adding way too many cloves and kinda ruining it :/

    For Christmas day we opened presents and then went for a big lunch at the local pub. I had to pretend I wasn't a vegetarian for the day coz the pub didn't have great vege options so for mains we got a pork knuckle which came on a spit type thing, some ribs and some chicken wings. It was all super delicious and really really filling. The bar had such a nice cosy winter vibe and it felt very christmasy with all the lights and decorations, it was the perfect spot to have our Christmas lunch. We stayed for two hours enjoying mulled wines and grogs (hot rum tea I think) before going home to have a big nap. We just finished having the pavlova which was surprisingly good!    もっと詳しく

    Ice hockey and going to budapest!

    Two nights ago we went to an ice hockey game. It was prague vs kladno so I'm guessing it was a czech league but it was in a big arena and it was packed with fans. We were in the standing area behind the goals which was where the passionate cheering fans go so the already electric atmosphere was even better for us. The funny thing about the cheer section is that there's a guy at the front who starts all the chants and he was just so intense and full of energy. We were blown away and were wondering how he managed to be so relentless, then the first period finished and he picked up an almost finished 2L bottle of beer ahahaha. I didn't get a video of him when he was going fully mental coz I figured he'd be going for the while game but I think he got a little too hammered about half way through coz he took his shirt off and became a bit lethargic. Honestly he mightve been even more impressive in the second half though because he had the hairiest chest and back I've ever seen! Prague won the game, there was plenty of aggression but no fights. I think the players would wake up very sore after their games cos they jam their sticks into each other's backs really hard all the time. The funniest thing about the game was when someone from the other team got kicked out the crowd does a chant which apparently means "fuck off" and then they all dance around with their middle fingers up, it was hilarious. The next day we went to a sushi train which was very tasty. Today I'm on the bus going to budpest, the scenery is a bit like driving through the farms down south, lots of big grassy wide open fields, it's also very foggy.もっと詳しく

    Happy new year everyone!!

    Conrad, our friend from prague, stayed with us over new years. We went to the same club for the 30th and 31st, it was great both times :). On the new years night we stashed some sparklers outside the club to blow up after. We thought they were going to be huge fireworks like prague so it was a little anticlimactic in the end lol.     Lazily exploring the areas around us

    So we've been in Budapest for almost a week now and its made a great first impression! A few things ive noticed are:

    The heads on all the beers are enormous, at least 3 finger widths. It's pretty annoying coz u have to wait a billion years before it's drinkable

    There are Thai massage places everywhere, like two on every street. I kinda wanna try one coz they must be so cheap with all the competition.

    Everyone speaks great English here, the best of anywhere we've been so far.

    And all the buildings are astoundingly beautiful, its arguably the best looking city we've been to so far!

    We haven't done too much touristy stuff coz its been new years and we've been lazy but we've done a few explores, seen some nice buildings, chilled on the island area in the middle of the river, walked down a cramped but vibrant market, and made some beats in a very very snazzy library!

    We went to a relly really cool bar the night after new years called Szimpla Kert. It had so many rooms and areas and had such a cool decor. The building was kinda like a third world jail with graffiti and chunks scratched off the walls but then it was busily decorated with heaps n heaps of random accessories. I think it might be the coolest bar I've ever been to! We went with some Austrian people we met on new years. We were all quite hungover so just sat at a table playing cards. (My pictures sucked so this ones from google ahah)

    I also saw some juice in the supermarket that boasted "added sugar". You don't see that everyday ahahaha.    もっと詳しく

    Buda castle

    Today we went to the buda castle, it was very grand. Not sure if this is common knowledge or not but the reason why budapest has its name is because one side of the Danube is called buda and the other pest, we live in pest and today was our first visit of buda. We went later in the day which meant we got to see an awesome sunset and then all the cities lights come on which was beautiful. After that we finally found a place that sold steins of beer!     Goulash, soviet museum, cave church

    Goulash is one of the main national foods of Hungary so we went to try some earlier this week. The restaurant we went to was extremely very well rated on google but in reality it was a pile of crap. It was cramped, overfilled and really stuffy. We got Goulash in a loaf of bread. I'd been quite excited to try the bread Goulash ever since I learned about it but ended up not really liking it. It was just a very salty broth with beef, Carrot and potato and I ended up having more than half a loaf of bread left at the end which I had to deal with. Mums camper slow cooker stews are far better. To be honest I have noticed all the food here is a bit too salty actually, I've had a blocked nose though and it's ruined my sense of taste so i can't really comment on if it's good or not. We've been frequenting a diner that's right across the road from our house and its been super nice and cheap :)) (the green soup in that pic was mind blowing).
    Yesterday we went to a museum called the house of terrors which had a bunch of stuff about the nazi and soviet occupation of Hungary. It was a good thing we chose to go to this museum because spencer and I were both completely unaware that Hungary had endured any kind of recent hardship and were thinking that the reason budapest still has so many beautiful buildings is because they weren't involved in any wars. It turns out Hungary had a very horrible 1900s at the hands of mainly the soviets who shipped almost 1000 000 Hungarians away to become slaves while terrorising all the people that were left behind in the cities. Things only got back to normal around here in 1989. The house of terror was built above a big underground labyrinth of torture chambers, it was very grim down there and they don't like you taking pictures. The one picture I did get was of the "victimisers room" which had pictures of all the bad people that did evil stuff, we had a bit of fun roaming around talking shit about all of them. This was the second time we'd turned down the audio guide and regretted it so we've agreed well just always get them from now on. Today we went to a church inside a cave, we got an audio book which played some monks singing chasing cars by snow patrol! We then went for a big walk around the other side of buda and then enjoyed a beautiful sunset and view on top of the hill, it was a really really nice evening :)).    もっと詳しく

    Things ive seen on my morning walks

    Spencer wakes up so late and I get pretty bored waiting for him so I've been doing a fair bit of solo exploring this week. Apart from all the awesome buildings, castles and cathedrals that are everywhere, a few notable places I've been are the central market hall and the heroes square. I couldnt buy anything at the market because I only had my card but it was still nice to have a look around. The place was packed and it was mostly people just selling groceries The building had 3 levels but the underground floor was pretty inhospitable, all the stores selling fish and pickles are down there and the airflow isn't great so it reeked! I don't know why but pretty much the only thing I remember about budapest from music tour was the heroes square, I went to check it out the other morning and it's exactly how I remembered it (not in an impressive way it's just a bunch of statues, i just found it strange how accurately I remembered it). Right next to the square is a huge open air ice skating rink which I'm so keen to go to sometime soon. There's also a super cool museum building that goes underground in the middle and has slanted gardens that you can walk up on either end. Earlier in the week we made a journey deep into the suburbs to pick up a second hand laptop for spencer. It felt very familiar out there and it reminded me of Northam, we were surprisingly at ease which was a bit weird considering we had no idea where we were or if it was a bad area or not. Even if it was a bad area I doubt anyone would've tried to mess with me because, as you can see from the selfie, I have a mullet now!! I did it to myself but you'd never know ahahaha.もっと詳しく

    We got a snow day in Budapest :))

    We finally got a snowy day!!! We decided we'd make the most of it by going to the Fisherman's Bastion, it's a big white castle at the top of the buda hill and it had a great view of the city. The bastion is about 200m from the buda castle and between them is a really quaint cobblestone street. Walking along that street with the bastion in front of us was a little bit like being in Harry Potter. It was kind of a grey day so the view was a bit foggy but it was still awesome to see Budapest looking all wintery and white. After the bastion we went to the same pizza place we went to on our first day here and then went for our usual happy hour stein at the local pub on our street.

    Ozge came to visit over the weekend and we went out to a nightclub that spencer was told would be "a real hungarian party". It was the most standard club we've been to all trip with the only notable feature being that all the dudes were built super thick. We went with ozge and an Aussie we met on new years. Spencer and the Aussie dude said they had a horrible time because of the big dudes but I had fun :) Ozges friend recommended a hungarian fish soup restaurant which we tried tonight. The soup was really hearty and filling, quite similar to Goulash but better. It's been so cold this week, today some of the paths were frozen and i was able to slide around like I was wearing socks.    もっと詳しく

    Ice skating, basilica, thermal bath

    Our last few days in Budapest have been great! On Tuesday we went back to the massive outdoor ice rink I found near the heroes square. It was so cool ice skating outside in the cold, the rink was just a carpark theyd covered with ice but it was so big that it kinda felt like we were doing it on an actual frozen lake. Spencer didn't take to it too easily and spent most of the time wobbling around in the corner. I watched a bunch of ice hockey players skating, they were going so fast and then stopping so aggressively that it sprayed ice everywhere. I wanted to do it so badly and spent the entire time trying but I never quite got it, I think its coz the hire skates were too blunt so they kinda bog down instead of shaving the ice when you turn sideways.

    The next day we went to a harry potter themed restaurant near our house. We had to wait a week to get a reservation and there has always been a huge line out the front so we were quite excited to check it out. It was a pretty cool night all in all, normal food in a decorated room, some of the drinks had dry ice in them which was pretty cool.

    We also discovered hungarian pizza this week which is delicious (but quite heavy and oily). The base is deep fried like a donut and then they add toppings to that. The toppings aren't melted which made me a little sceptical but it totally worked and it was delicious! I got chilli con carne on mine and spencer got "traditional toppings" which just ended up being ham and cheese.

    The novelty of classical churches and cathedrals has completely worn off for us now and as a result we've kind of adopted a "no paying to see them from the inside" policy for the rest of the trip, but the St Stephens Basilica is right across the street from our house and we walked past it so much that we eventually relented and went to check it out. It was very grand and shiny as expected, im always gobsmacked by how high the roofs are in these places.

    Our last activity was going to visit the thermal baths. We were initially pretty underwhelmed by the whole thing because it cost $45 to get in and it was literally just a warm public pool. I was ready to leave after an hour but it was so expensive we felt obligated to stay, we ended up getting a few morning beers and just sat back n took it all in. The baths did look really cool with the yellow, classical buildings and the Greek style pillars and all the steam coming up from the water. I'm glad we stayed for as long as we did because I ended up really developing an appreciation for just floating around n being warm. I wasn't bored at all by the end and I felt amazing. The highlight of the day was definitely the sauna and ice bath, we spent ages alternating between those.

    I forgot to say this earlier but ive been really surprised by how nice the pastries have been in Budapest, they're always so crispy and flakey, even the ones from the supermarket bakeries.    もっと詳しく

    First day Snowboarding in Turkey!

    We're in Turkey again for the next 13 days going snowboarding on Mt Erciyes! Yesterday was our first day on the slopes and it was so fun! Everything came back so fast I feel like I got as good as I was in New Zealand after like 2 minutes. We spent most of the day making our own trails off the groomed slopes because the snow was so powdery there. I was able to stick my arm all the way into the snow and still not touch the bottom. We were both a little bit surprised how much harder it is to snowboard on powder, it feels like you're floating but it's so easy to bog down and catch a rail. Such a fun day but were so exhausted now.

    The mountain is so cheap, they don't charge by day but by how many times you use the lifts, we got 30 lift passes for $40 and only used 7 yesterday so it was like $10 for a full day of snowboarding!!!

    Also there's there's an amazing Turkish breakfast place right next to our apartment. We were so full after that spread!    もっと詳しく

    Took some slams

    We made a ramp n did some jumps. I got pretty bad whiplash on that backwards one :/ lesson learned I'm going to take it easy from now on. We're both super sore but it's been fun!!!

    Cappadocia pt 1

    Last night we hired a car and drove 1hr to stay in Cappadocia for a night. Ozge is staying with us now and drove which was super stressful, she was driving so badly and was probably the most distracted driver I've ever been in the car with. She was running up curbs, constantly missing turns, drifting over lanes and kept messing around with the radio. Spencer and I had to do some serious back seat driving and were both extremely frustrated by the end of the trip. We arrived at our hotel at 1am in the morning.
    We didn't get much of a chance to sleep because we had to get up at 5:30 to see the hot air balloons take off. Cappadocia is famous for its sunrises where loads of hot air balloons all take off at the same time to give people rides, it was the main reason we wanted to visit. It was quite a foggy morning so the sunrise was a bit grey but it was still pretty cool in its own way. Seeing all the balloons floating over the spiky landscape was pretty magical. There has been a handful of times on this trip when I've thought to myself that I'm witnessing one of the best sights I might ever see (ie. pyramids and athens rock) and I got that feeling again this morning. The landscape in cappadocia is littered with big spiky rocks, it's a little bit like the bungle bungles but they're pointy. Many of the spikes were hollowed out by people living here 2-3000 years ago to make houses. There were also lots of hills with stripy vertical faces that looked a bit like the grand canyon.    もっと詳しく

    Cappadocia pt 2

    After the sunrise we drove about an hour to see an underground city that the ancient turkish people also made. The tunnels were very small, the people living in Turkey 2000 years ago mustve been very short because even ozge was having to crouch and she's only 5'4. The tunnels went down surprisingly far, I reckon 50-100 metres.
    Next we went to visit an ancient monastery that was carved into a mound of spiky rocks. I was really surprised how intricate some of the rooms were, there were roman-like pillars and arches that looked like windows carved into the walls so the caves looked quite similar to a lot of the classical churches we've visited. Some rooms also had faint religious paintings on the roof and walls, I reckon it would've looked brilliant when it was all new.
    After that we drove all the way back to town and tried to see the open air museum but it was closed. We were all super tired so it didn't concern any of us too much. Instead we went to the main sunset lookout and enjoyed some mulled wine and salep, which is a milky drink made from the roots of orchids. I later learned that its very inefficient to make salep, so much so that its even illegal to make in some countries, so i probably won't get it again but it was really delicious. It tastes like warm milk with melted marshmallows in it but with a more silky texture and they put cinnamon in it. Once again the sunset was a little non-existent due to clouds and fog but it was still a lovely place to sit and take in the view.
    For dinner we went to a traditional Turkish meze where we had to sit on the floor. We got a bottle of local cappadocia wine which I ended up having most of because spencer and ozge both wanted to drive home. The atmosphere was awesome and the food was super tasty, it was a perfect way to end a fabulous day :). Ozge drove home but it was fine this time.    もっと詳しく

    Haircut n spencer nose piercing

    Today we went for another turkish breakfast at the same place down the road. It was amazing again and I think it mightve been the first time we've eaten and ozge hasn't complained about the food ahaha. Turkish people seem to be very proud and patriotic about their food and usually get annoyed when we're eating and something's not right. The mountain was closed today because it was too windy so we had to find other things to do. We decided it'd be a good day for us to do some work on our appearances to get ready for krakow and amsterdam so we met up with ozges friend again and he recommended a barber for me and a piercing place for spencer. I told the barber to do whatever he wanted and i ended up getting an exaggerated version of the mullet I gave myself a few weeks ago. I also got a cool line in my eyebrow lol. After that we went to get spencer a nose piercing and then went out to a fancy restaurant to get some good quality local kayseri dishes for dinner. The food was amazing, it was the best manti ive had and we learned how to roll up our gozleme like the locals do instead of "eating it like lasagne" ahaha. It actually did make it taste better. We spent the rest of the night at our house drinking raki and chatting. Very good lay day!!もっと詳しく

    Turkish family dinner

    Arda (ozges friend that we've been hanging out with) invited us over for dinner with his family tonight. It was a bit of a formal occasion so we were kinda nervous going in because this was the first time most of the people there would've eaten with Aussies and we wanted to make a good impression. When we arrived the whole family was waiting at the door to greet us, they were all so warm and welcoming but when I went to shake the dads hand he pulled me in and tilted his head down, I was supposed to kiss his cheeks but I didn't know that so instead I pressed my forehead against his like we were in rise of the planet of the apes or something which was pretty awkward ahaha. The parents didn't speak much English so we were all talking and then everything was being translated. We talked about a bunch of stuff but they were particularly interested in Australia's relationship with the royal family. Apparently arads dad researched australian politics before we arrived and was concerned we might be having to go to war against England for independence at some point. Obviously that's absurd and I found it pretty funny but it was also a little eye opening that he would even think that, like he was projecting problems onto us that he has to worry about. We had soup for entre and then the kayseri lasagne (yağlama) again for mains, it was served with a few meze style dishes to roll in it which were all super tasty. For dessert we had a milky noodle slice type dish called Cold Kadayif, it was insanely delicious, easily top 5 desserts I've ever tried.     Im a skier now!!

    So about a month ago we started getting really psyched for snowboarding and were watching loads of videos of it but it was kinda weird coz, for the most part, I was finding all the snowboarding edits super boring and the snowboarders kept doing super cringe stuff in between clips. It felt a bit like I was watching boogie boarding or something silly like that. I realised that the only reason I preferred snowboarding over skiing was because yr10 me arbitrarily decided that snowboarding was cooler when we were asked to decide which one we wanted to do before ski tour. Out of curiosity I put on a skiing video instead and it was wayy gnarlier, the skiiers were doing way crazier tricks and everything they did was just so much faster and bigger. Fast forward a few weeks and despite this new-found ambivalence, I ended up deciding to snowboard in Turkey just because I could already do it and i figured I'd be able to enjoy it more than starting from scratch skiing. This went well for the first day and a half but I ended up getting insanely bored and by the third day I didn't even want to go to the mountain anymore. I decided to take my snowboard back to the rental place and swap it for some skis! My first day of skiing was the first day ozge was with us on the mountain and she wanted to learn how to snowboard so her and spencer did that and I went off by myself to teach myself skiing. It was really weird at first having to use both my feet equally instead of being goofy. At the start I could only turn one way and i felt so uncoordinated whenever I had to use my right foot, but by the end of the day I'd gotten used to it and could zig zag my way down the beginner slope faster than most of the other people.

    Today was my 4th day skiing and I can now confirm its so much better than snowboarding. It's more stable and easier to stop which means you can go wayy faster. I've been pushing myself to see how long I can go straight down slopes without turning, its exhilarating! I'm so glad I decided to change, I can't believe I disregarded skiing for so long just because it looked less like surfing. All my future snow experiences are going to be so much better now. What a monumental W!!

    Also that lady's name is fatma, we rented lockers from her and she kept trying to have banter with us but she only spoke Turkish so we never got it, she was really sweet :). Also that vid is of my second day btw I got better than that I promise ahaha    もっと詳しく
