  • Great ocean drive

    3 december 2024, Australien ⋅ 🌙 14 °C

Wow what a day, early start to meet our minibus tour to the 12 Apostles along the Great ocean Road, built by 3000 returning 1st WW1 soldiers. Walked down Gibsons steps to the beach, hard walk back, few more stops for great views then to the 12 apostles , only 6 now.. had a little moment here as it was such an incredible sight & 1 I had held in my head since 1971 as a small child being given a book on Australia by my grt uncle visiting from Oz. Saw wild Koalas up in the eucalyptus trees, Jimmy Chang our driver & guide was great, but drove pretty fast .. and more great views along the Great Ocean Road.. ,long day finished off with a drink in one of the roof top bars in Melbourne.. lovely vibe but little bit too young for us oldies lol..Läs mer

Rest day today , breakfast at Ernest’s, very lovely, then walked it off walking the high street & back and looking in the shops, booked a wine flight (tasting) at Somerled winery.. the winemaker (84 years old) was head wine maker at Penfolds & Wynns before Penfolds was sold to a conglomerate.. we tried 5 wines each, all quite delicate & lovely but we both likedthe Chardonnay reserve, much like the Oz wines when they 1st hit 🇬🇧 30 years ago.. supper at a German restaurant.. far to big portions.. then finally saw our first kangarooLäs mer

    8 december 2024, Australien ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

There are so many wineries in this area and it it would be difficult to choose which one to go to, thankfully Teresa had recommended The Lane winery which we did today. The winery was about 5 minutes from us set in the hills with great views from the tasting room. We both tried 5 different wines, much lighter in style due to the climate, and liked the Chardonnay’s.. after the tasting went in for lunch which was really very good , and we could see why they had won so many awards. The food was flavoursome with some many delicious elements. The wines with the courses were great too.. we even had sprouts with our lamb which was divine.. the best meal so far in Oz and quality of quantity..Läs mer

  • Seaford & Brighton beaches

    9 december 2024, Australien ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

Had a lovely drive along the Onkaparinga scenic Road through lots of small villages. Stopped off at the Simon_Tolley winery as we really liked this wine & decided to get a bottle for tonight., beautiful location. We then carried on country roads through the Adelaide hills until we picked up the motorway & down a very steep motorway towards Adelaide & Seaford beach. We had to do this when we saw it in the map. Beautiful beaches, windy like out Seaford beach, but it was a lovely 26. We carried on the coast road to Brighton & Hove , and dipped our toes in the ocean and a walk along the Brighton beach. Drove back to the CBD of Adelaide to find our hotel. Adelaide so much quieter than Melbourne which is lovely. Who knew that car parking could be such an issue when using the multi-storey car park opposite us, tickets on out.. all sorted & checked in for the next couple of days. Off out to find something to eat .Läs mer

  • Adelaide to Alice Springs

    12 december 2024, Australien ⋅ ⛅ 33 °C

Checked out of our hotel, and had a drive around the north part of Adelaide, found tree lined avenues & Wellington square,(park).so stopped for a coffee & walked around the park. Headed off to the airport for our flight to Alice Springs, I’ve been intrigued by this place, partly the terrain, partly because it is the home to the Royal Flying Doctors, and I used to watch the children’s programme back in the 70’s about the flying drs, during the long summer holidays, & partly due to watching Priscilla Queen of the desert. Sadly as we had to wait so long for a taxi to take us from the airport to the hotel, by the time I got to the museum for the flying drs it was closed. The heat hit us as we walked across the tarmac from the plane to the terminal. 38 dry hot heat..
the flight from Adelaide was incredible, to see the coast line then the arid landscape of desert & red surface & rocks was something I’ve never seen. We flew over a big lake that seemed to have large ships( oil tankers) crossing it. Then dried river beds & dried lakes like salt lakes .. very windy landing with cross winds as we came in.. & finally our 1st swim in the hotels pool..

  • An amazing day.. Alice Springs to Uluru

    13 december 2024, Australien ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Up early & on the bus .. there were just 4 passengers on a 50 seater.. sat at the front for a perfect view of long straight roads.. we turned right and left twice in 6ths of travelling. Started on the main Darwin to Adelaide Road then after a stop at a local watering hole turned on to the road for Uluru.. we saw camels , budgies & other birds, no kangaroos though. It had rained recently so there was plenty of green & even some water in the rivers., we stopped off at Mount Conner & looked at a salt flat,,no picture does this justice.. you can see why they call this the red zone, the earth is red everywhere…the drivers also kept us informed about the cattle stations, some of the farms are over 1000,000 hectares..it was such an amazing journey, but I did drop off once or twice.. out side temp was 38/9. Arrived at hotel, little swim in the pool, & then a nap before going out for the field of light dinner & sunset at Uluru .Läs mer

  • Sunset @ Uluru & Field of lights

    13 december 2024, Australien ⋅ ☀️ 37 °C

Picked up at hotel & drove out to the national park of Uluru (Ayers rock) we were greeted with canapés & glasses of fizz , as we sat & watched the sun setting .. we were only a small group so plenty of space to view and take in the splendour of this rock as gradually changed colour with the setting sun. Not sure why people have to speak so loudly if at all, as nothing is more awe inspiring than what we watching. Once the sunset we headed along the path for open air dinner under moonlight, we chatted to fellow travellers on our table whilst being served some good food & wine, including kangaroo. During dinner we were able to look through the telescope at stars, not too many out as the moon was so bright. after dinner Wendy the astronomer talked about the stars we could see, pointing them out with a very powerful laser. She talked about Aboriginal beliefs & that life on earth is reflected in the stars.. she was very interesting to listen to.. we them wandered through the Field of Lights, an art exhibition of small lights by Bruce Monroe, an English guy who had seen a double rainbow over Uluru on one of his visits & wanted to replicate it as art installation.. I am not convinced it added anything , was interesting . We then headed back to the coach & back to the hotel by 11pm for a quick sleep before having to go back to at 4.30 for the sunrise tour.. I was expecting loads of people & flies & had even purchased a net , but they weren’t too bad & we didn’t see tone else apart from our small group, all well managed .Läs mer

  • Sunrise at Uluru & Kata Tjuṯa

    14 december 2024, Australien ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

Up far too early & on the coach to take us into the national park to watch the sunrise .. we drove closer to the rock and circumnavigated it until we came to our viewing spot. We watched as the sun rose changing the colours of the rock, which was more colourful than the sun set. It was also quieter, think as people were still waking up. Again not very busy & plenty of space to take in the views. Once the sun had risen we headed off to Kata Tjuṯa another large rock formation in the park, & larger than Uluru.. we then tracked through the gorge of this rock face despite the pesky flies which seemed more abundant this morning, & I had forgotten my net.. it was a reasonable hike especially in the heat. We even saw a lizard. On our return we stopped off at a couple of viewing spots to take it all in.. another well organised trip, not too many people despite seeing quite a few coaches going into the park .Läs mer

Off to the airport with the plane almost at touching point from the lounge. Jetstar to Sydney 3 hrs great flight over the desert and salt lakes.. the ground looked like the ripples left by the sea on the beach, which did happen here..

  • Wollongong to Goulburn

    16 december 2024, Australien ⋅ ⛅ 34 °C

Woke up to great views of the sea & bright sunshine in Austinmer .. and headed off towards Goulburn our next destination to stay with Suzi for a couple of nights. Suzi had given us a scenic route to take along the coast which had some stunning views, & beaches along with pretty little towns such as Berry. We paddled in seven mile beach which was so beautiful, I could only see 6 people on the beach, the natural beauty was incredible and I must admit had a little moment there. The drive through Kangaroo valley was awesome, up and down the mountains with spectacular views.. no kangaroo’s 😂.the photos can never show how magnificent the actual view was. We stoped at Fitzroy falls, which literally took my breath away as you walked along the path and suddenly came to an opening and the path suddenly became a platform looking over the gorge & waterfall to the side.. .. we continued our drive to Goulburn & supper with Suzi & CraigLäs mer

Had a lovely day with Suzi & Craig. Craig drove me around Goulburn seeing the sites, great view from the war memorial which was up high giving views across the town. Went to Bunnings which was a huge B&Q type store, better value than the UK. We also drove around looking at some of the older properties in the town.. we then hooked up a caravan to take to Craig’s piece of land that he is hoping to build a place on out in the country at Binder.. lovely drive out there and it’s quite high above sea level and gets cold & snow in the winter. Went through a lovely little typical Aussie town called Crookwell and stopped for a pie. Met up with Alison & Suzi, who done their own thing in the morning. Drove back and went for a few beers with the guys in a typical couple of Aussie pubs..dinner at the local Thai followed by a tour of the local Christmas lights.Läs mer

  • Sydney day 2

    19 december 2024, Australien ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Had a morning tour of the city, mainly all around the shore line starting at Miller’s Point and the observatory, which gave a good view of the bridge we then went past the NSW parliament & art museums etc the old barracks & Hyde park, all museums are free , we continued round the coast mrs Macquarie chair, which gave great views of the bridge & opera house, perfect place to be for NYE fireworks. We headed round to Potts point & Woolloomooloo, beautiful houses, Russell Crow has a place there so decided not to buy.. saw a lovely Aston Martin parked in the drive of one of the houses, beautiful tree lined roads , expensive shops. We moved on to King’s Cross, once a renowned red light and drug area, but now more sanitised, though plenty of bars & the remnants of sex shops around.Darling Bay, Rushcutters Bay & rose bay, followed before we came to Vaucluse, very exclusive area.. at Watson’s bay we looked out to the pacific & the entrance to Sydney . Opposite us was Manly. From there Dover Heights & down to Bondi Beach. My great uncle Walter lived here, & I remember my gran saying she used to go for a swim most days when she visited him back in 1977. Lots of surfers about, but pretty windy.. the old buildings surrounding the bay are lovely once you go above the shop fronts. From there it was back through Paddington , lovely old streets, & houses with wrought iron railings & balconies, trendy & expensive place to be, through Surrey Hills & Darlinghurst where the Gay pride takes place each May & back to our drop off. Having watched Luxe listing-selling Sydney we seemed to be familiar with these areas & we’re looking out for the estate agents that appear in the programme.
Had a short rest then I went out to see some of the buildings not too far away. In St James church it was interesting to see some plaques of Captains who had been speared by the blacks (sic), and another of a captain’s wife who had died on the way back to England, her longitude & latitude of death were recorded on the plaque. Walking into the NSW parliament, one of the security guards took me into the chamber bit like our house of commons, & gave me a brief history & talk about the NSW parliament.. all free & just wanted to share his knowledge, despite the closed sign on the chamber. I walked along to the old barrack museum again free, but only had a short time there as was meeting Alison. We walked along Pitt street , looking on various shops, some of the department stores had some lovely art deco architecture. Back for a short rest before we head out to see the Sydney Christmas tree and what late night shopping is all about in Sydney

Got up, breakfast across the road & did some laundry. Got the tram to circular quay, saved us a walk down. Walked through the Quays to the opera house. Tours had sold out but we were able to go inside and have a look but not the auditorium. We walked around the edge to the front of the opera house which have some iconic views. It is very impressive. Did some retail therapy, & tram back to hotel to wait for Jack & Paige, and despite their 4 hr delay and us looking out for them they suddenly appeared. So lovely to see them as we haven’t see Paige since last October. . We went back on the tram to circular Quay so they could see the bridge & Opera house, then caught the ferry to Manly. Great ferry ride to manly.. and once there took a paddle in the sea. The bars were heaving being the last Friday before Christmas. We found a roof top Mexican and had a tower of margaritas, though perhaps they forgot to put the alcohol in! After dinner we got the ferry back in the sunset, there is a light show in the sails of the opera house but having hung around nothing seemed to be happening so went back to the hotel.Läs mer

We then walked the coastal walk through to Tamaramra beautiful cliff walk to this lovely beach as featured in Luxe Listing on Netflix. Houses over looking the bay go for several million $, can see why it’s beautiful. Up & checked out of our hotel, really enjoyed our days in Sydney & the hotel. Loaded the car and set off to Heatherbrae for a pie for lunch, which was on route to Port Macquarie. The road took us over the Sydney bridge which was unexpected but great to drive over. Traffic was busy on the main road took us to Heatherbrae where we stopped off & queued for a pie. These had been recommended & they were good. Jack then took over the driving & went on a detour to port Nelson, which had some lovely bays, driving up to the lighthouse, which had some fantastic views. Was originally going to be the main port of Australia but Singapore port became the main port instead . We then headed back past 1 mile beach and its sand dunes with camel rides to port Macquarie.
