• Fairfax Heritage Track

    2023年5月12日, オーストラリア ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

My cliff top walk finished in a closed lookout. I was a little disappointed as it was supposed to be one of the better lookouts across the valley.

The route back to the main area was either a road or a different walk. I had an hour or so before the next bus so I decided to take the long way.

This was a paved path that cut through the forest of gum trees. A different landscape to the one I was just going through.

At the end was a visitor centre with an art gallery. The photography displayed was quite astonishing.

Back at the hostel I packed my bag and hid in my nice warm room. A lot of people had been doing the run today so it was fairly quite in the hostel.

  • Final travel day!

    2023年5月13日, オーストラリア ⋅ 🌙 18 °C

The day is finally here. Tomorrow I start in Port Macquarie, so today is my final travel day.

My train down to Sydney was at 2,30 so I had quite a while to wait. I had breakfast and relaxed in the hostel. Then went out to walk around the town. I got a coffee and biscuit from a cafe. The coffee was surprisingly good and spent a bit of time reading my book.

When it was time I got my train down to Sydney and waited in central station for my bus. My bus to Port Macquarie was at 6pm, but thankfully the city wasnt too cold so I was happy to wait in the station.

My bus was far from enjoyable. I was seated next to a guy who would not shut up. Unfortunately he was also getting of at Port and seemed to think we would be best friends. I was far from pleased.

Completely exhausted, pissed off and cold I arrived in Port at midnight. A quick walk up a hill to my hostel and i could sleep. Well sort of. One of the guys in my room snored like a freight train all night. But i still got more sleep than on the bus so that was something.

  • First Day

    2023年5月14日, オーストラリア ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

I woke up early after not sleeping. When reception opened I went and introduced myself. Everyone is super friendly and I agreed to do a shift today. I didnt really want too because I had barely slept but it's good to start of on the right foot.

The work is basic housekeeping and this is hardly my first rodeo so it was pretty chill. It was also only 2hrs so cannot go wrong with that.

I also moved into my new home for the next 4 weeks. It's a dorm room but only 4 of us so that's nice. I got a single bed right next to the window so I'm glad.

After my shift the sun was shining beautifully so I joined some of the girls sun bathing by the pool. Unfortunately the pool was ice cold. And not the 'it's fine once youre in' cold, the 'this is a plunging ice pool' kind of cold.

In the afternoon, I put my laundry on and went to woolies to get food. Unfortunately I put everything in the wash because it all needed cleaning, but this means I have no clothes left which isnt so great.

In the evening we went out for a drink. I got a passion fruit mocktail. The bar was right on the water front and as the fun set some dolphins swam through the harbour. I had no clue Port Macquarie had anything like that. We are also entering whale season so I a few weeks we should be able to see some of them.

I was exhausted by this point and just wanted to go to bed but the girls put on a movie so I joined them. I'm spending the next few weeks with them, itll be good if I can make friends with them quickly.

I decided to head out after my shift housekeeping to try and find a job.

Places seem to be hiring but not sure how much success I will have. Its entering winter so less job possibilities here.

I also went to get groceries. Woolies is a bit of a walk but I looked around for job possibilities around there. There is a big shopping mall so I might be able to get a job there.

Today was just pretty chill. Getting used to the town, where stuff is and settling in. Everyone here is really nice as well which helps.

  • Interview

    2023年5月16日, オーストラリア ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

I woke up pretty early today. I'm liking having a couple hours before work in the morning. I'm not used to working at the start of the day so it's a little strange but I like it.

I made a fun breakfast. I'm trying to eat a mix of different things. Anything that's colourful and not bland.

Work was super easy, not surprising from the last few days. Making beds and cleaning bathrooms is hardly taxing, it is just time consuming. But even then it's only 2 hours a day. Anyone can do that.

I had lunch with Berber, a girl in my room who is also volunteering. Then got changed and headed to an interview. It went well until I said I worked between 10am and 12pm at the hostel. Unfortunately that put a downer on the interview.

Back at the hostel I was kind of annoyed. I really want to get a job and the way the interview ended wasnt great. Surprisingly the company called me a few hours later in the afternoon and offered me a different job. I was very relieved and now just need to wait for word from them over the paper work and hours involved.

Didnt do much in the rest of the evening. Just hung around the hostel with the girls and chilled.

  • Walks to Koalas

    2023年5月18日, オーストラリア

After work today we decided to do something with our afternoon. Olivia, Camila and I walked through town to the Koala hospital.

Our first stop was the bats. In the middle of the city is a little strip of greenery full to the brim with bats. It was the most unnerving thing. Extremely loud, kinda creepy and massive. They hung above our heads, probably thousands of them. We did not enjoy the walk through, far too creepy.

After the bats we reached the Koala hospital. It is a nice idea but I was expecting a bit more. Not to be rude, but it was just a handful of cages with Koalas in. There wasnt much info on them and there wasnt that many so I was just expecting more. But I guess it's good there arent many sick Koalas.

We walked back to the hostel and decided to go out tonight. One of the bars does a backpacker night meaning that the beer is cheaper than a coke. I wasnt best please but there we go. They also do cheaper food and I got the vegan nachos. Now they were good. Breaded cauliflower nuggets, melted cheese and enough salsa to drown a person. Top tier.

They also had a big fire and the workers gave us some free marshmallows to cook over the flames. We all felt like little kids gone camping.

Me and Femke decided to dip around 8pm. It was super cold and the guy we had been gossiping about had just arrived so we felt a bit awkward. The others arrived back a little while after us as the bar closes at 8,30 anyways. Why it closes so early I'm not sure, but probably cause the place was empty except for our backpacker group.

Back at the hostel I played Femke at pool, she won. Then we did some articulate, a very strange game, but I did win. Then the others decided to go out out and I went to bed.

  • Painted rocks

    2023年5月19日, オーストラリア

Today was my day off so I hit the town. So to speak.

I decided to finally walk around the coastline to the beach. I've been focusing in the town trying to find somewhere to work and havent got so far yet.

The walk begins where we went for drinks my first night here at the 'painted rocks'. These rocks extend along the shoreline from the main area right to the beach. All unique and painted for a reason. Some are commemorations of people or events. Some are messages, prayers or love notes. And some are paintings or recreations of something.

They cover the coast in so many colours, lighting it up. Something a little different.

  • Beach walk

    2023年5月19日, オーストラリア ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

There is a long walk that goes along the length of the coast for a couple km. The painted rocks is the sort of start, then it extends south.

Town beach is stunning. There were a bunch of people doing a body boarding competion. I was not aware that were was more to body boarding than just riding the wave in, similar to surfing. But there were people doing spins and all sorts. I was impressed.

The rocks protrude into the water making some shallow spots good for swimming with kids. Behind the rocks further out were the pro surfers. Now they are cool to watch.

There is also a lookout above between the Town beach and Oxley beach. It was were the 'settlers' of Port Macquarie declared the area as Port Macquarie and owned by the British. It is an excellent view point, a good choice.

  • Forms to complete

    2023年5月19日, オーストラリア ⋅ 🌙 15 °C

I decided to stick around Town Beach and grabbed a coffee and a cookie. I picked up a load of paperwork for my new job yesterday and decided to spend a bit of time filling it out in the sun shine. Frankly the amount I have to do feels excessive but we jump through the hoops we have too.

The coffee was amazing but the star of the show was the cookie. Chocolate chip chunks with a sprinkle of sea salt on top. Cannot beat it.

I read of a while in the sun. I'm rereading the hunger games books. There is a new movie coming out soon and so I'm rereading the books. I first read them when I was 14 or something so I dont remember much but I still love them. Something very unique about a ya dystopian book done right.

I wandered back to the hostel through town. I'm still trying to get a lay of the land but seem to be getting better now I have walked it a few times.

Back at the hostel we chilled for a bit and decided to buy dominoes for dinner. Did we need dominoes no. But it was great. We ate it while watching pocahontas which is a movie I havent actually seen yet. We finished the evening off with jackass 4.5. A really nice day off.

  • Sunset

    2023年5月20日, オーストラリア ⋅ 🌙 14 °C

Today was Saturday. More people checked out this morning than before so we were busy but still not difficult.

After work, Camila and I decided to go for a walk down to the beach. We spent a few hours relaxing in the sun. Berber went surfing before joining us to sun bathe.

We decided to finally get up around 4pm as it was beginning to get cold. We then agreed to meet a the marina to watched the sunset with drinks. We missed the sunset by a few minutes so only got to see after.

We then went back to the hostel to eat and relax before going out. I ended up borrowing a jacket from my roommate Zuri. She has more clothes than the other three of us combined. We did a typical mirror selfie, played some pool and headed put. The bar was horrible. A bunch of 18 year olds and 50+ all plastered. My feet stuck to the floor and the music was awful. I lasted an hour before leaving with Berber. We were both sober and not interested in putting up with all that.

We decided to buy dominoes again. Got a pizza and watched movies. We watched a really dreadful movie about Americans going to spain to party. It was not good. And then put on Pirates of the Caribbean which was good. But noone was really in the mood so we all just split up and did our own thing.

I didnt do much for the rest of the day. Just lay about, read and did a bit of meditation.

  • Coastal walk

    2023年5月22日, オーストラリア ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

After work, Berber, Camila and I decided to finally do the Coastal walk.

Port Mac has a collection of things to do, we have done them all except the Coastal walk. So we made a packed to finally do it.

The reason why we havent done it yet, its 2.5hrs long. But we did it.

The coastline is stunning. All blue waters, black rocks and greenery. I felt like I was back in Bali a little. It gave off a similar vibe. If a little cooler.

We managed the walk in roughly 2hrs 15 which we were proud of. Especially as we kept stopping to take photos and werent exactly going fast. The trail was paved or steps most of the way so wasnt difficult at all, only long.

  • Lighthouse

    2023年5月22日, オーストラリア ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

I'm gonna be honest, when we reached the light house I was disappointed. I was expecting big, red and white stripes and it too dominate the hill top. And it didnt. It is tiny.

But the walk was worth it and we had a really nice time.

At the lighthouse we met some of the others from the hostel who had driven down. We sat and watched the water while the sun set. Somehow, Berber managed to spot a whale which was amazing. We had heard they were here as it's that time of year but we hadn't seen any yet. There seemed to be two, maybe more. They blew loads of water up before finally doing some tail flips and a few jumps. I did not managed to get a photo, but one of the girls has a proper camera and she got the shots.

Berber went back with them in the car and Camila and I waited for the bus. It was super cold once the sun had set but we of course had to get an icecream to share while we waited.

  • Finally surfing

    2023年5月23日, オーストラリア ⋅ 🌙 17 °C

I woke pretty early before work and enjoyed the morning rays warming me up. Work was fine.

After I spoke to Amelia, a long termer in the hostel and also the one with a car. She was going surfing with Jack, another volunteer. I decided it was finally time I went surfing.

The board I got was a lot thinner than the one I am used to and I didnt enjoy it so much. Couldn't find the balance on the different size board. But got there eventually and enjoyed riding the weaker waves in. The waves were either really weak and tiny or massive today, no in between. But we had fun regardless and thanks to wetsuits werent cold.

Back at the hostel I changed and grabbed my cvs. I found out this morning that after all of my work with the paperwork and getting my vaccine done, I cannot get the job. I had to do a final check and I dont have the correct paperwork to do that check. You have to have Australian papers, foreign ones arent excepted. Sometime there are exemptions but I dont qualify for those so I cannot get the job.

So I hit the town once more and handed my cv into a few restaurants and bars in town. Noone is really hiring currently as it is winter but hopefully something will happen.

I decided to stay out and watched the sunset again. Read my book for a bit while it went down before I got too cold and went back to the hostel. The sunsets here are nice but without any clouds in the sky, they lack some of the usual pinks and purples.

  • Sunrise yoga

    2023年5月24日, オーストラリア ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

So today I decided to wake up and do some yoga. Instead of being normal and doing it in the hostel gardens or maybe a studio or gym, I decided to go down to the beach.

A woman runs a sunrise yoga down on the beach. I am a 25 minute walk from the beach so I woke up nice and eay at 5,30 am and practically ran to the beach as it was so cold. Without the sun it is very cold and even worse just before dawn. It was about 10° as I was walking which is the coldest I have been in months.

The yoga was so nice though. It's been a few weeks since I've done any or even stretched which made me suffer at the start but I soon loosened up and relaxed into it. With the class comes a coffee afterwards which was an excellent incentive. I was by far the youngest participant but I'm fairly used to hat now. The ladies were all nice and even gave me some recommendations of where to try and find work which was helpful.

After coffee I walked back through town and stopped into some of the cafe that are open early. I currently cannot do morning because of my work for accommodation but I've only got two more week so that so I am hoping something happens for after.

At the hostel I made some breakfast because I was starving and get ready for work.

After work, Camila, berber and I went down to a pancake cafe for lunch. I got a savory chicken pancake and a hot chocolate. It about balancing the sugar. Also I would never made a chicken crepe at some so it seemd like a good choice. And it was. Super cheese and tasty. As soon as I get a job I will be returning here and trying a different one.

We then did a bit of op shopping before going back to the hostel. All eight of the long termers happened to be there for the first time in a while so we chatted for a bit in the sun before it started getting cold. The sun is only up for about 10hrs here and without it, it is very cold. Winter is definitely coming to Port Mac, but hopefully that'll mean everyone leaves and I can get a job.

  • Relaxing days

    2023年5月25日, オーストラリア ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

Yet again, the sun was shining gorgeously so i decided to read my book by the pool. It ended up being quite a group of us sunbathing and reading by the pol.

Then in the evening, i was sitting in my room not doing much, when Zuri came in in her chaotic way that she is prone to do and said that she was meeting Camila down by the water for drink. We met at Little Shack again and watched the sunset. We actually managed to get an ok view today. Usually we are too late and the view bit if full but today it wasnt.

I had the passion fruit mocktail again, it was very nice as thr sun went down. But then Zuri had to go to work. Camila and I stated a little longer and we decided to buy some chips because we could smell the and we really wanted some .

We finished, went for a walk along the water then she joined me as I dropped some more CVs off. By the rocks we found a new one we like and Camila managed to get a great shot of it.

We then got back to the room and Berber and I decided that we needed Dominoes. She was feeling bad and i'm not in the best of spirits right now so we just decided to get pizza. We ended up eating it in our room watching our own things. Not very social but something we both needed. I ended up for getting the margarita because I havent had that one yet and i was excited for it. But I didnt realise there was tiny chunks of tomato and veg so it wasn't just a plain cheese margarita. I didnt mind it but it wasnt what I thought I was ordering. I did get the cheese crust though. It was more expensive and unnecessary but so good!

  • Days of interviews

    2023年5月26日, オーストラリア ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

So today was my day off supposedly . I woke up nice and early at around 7 a.m. because i have a trial at 8 a.m. are my thought it went well i think that it was ok the

The trial itself was very good it was a bit longer than i was expecting she said only an hour and ended up being nearly two which isn't ideal but there we go . Everyone seemed really nice and the place looks really but i don't have one issue . She micro managers . I know it is her business and she's per a lot of effort into this but i all my god she was quite intense . I am hoping that it was only while i was doing a trial it's not usually like that, but she said that she's in very often.

Anyway at the end of the trial she oftered me the job which is always good but then she put a stipulation in. I can have the job but only if i commit to 3 months . She will not give me the job if i can not confirmed that i stay 3 months . What she will do if i don't stay for 3 months i'm not entirely sure but she did very much make it sound like a threat . As though she may not give me my final pay if i left before my 3 months that i had agreed too. I intend to stay for those three months it's not too much of an issue but that feels like a big red flag . I'm not quite sure how i feel about it but it is an offer so i will take it .

I finished my trial around probably 10 am and went down to the beach.

I'm not sure if it's just a winter thing or a Port Macquarie thing but it's so quite. I like that. I decided to go in the water around mid day because it was a lot warmer by this point. The sea was actually warm, I was expecting it to be mcuh colder than it was.

That was my first time going in the sea while being here. That was very nice and then i decided to continue my walk. I had looked at the weather and it said it was going to rain around 1 and it was 12:30 so i decided to walk back.

As i past the library, the rain began intensely. So I decided to go in and set up a library card . I also decided to join a book club. It is a new book club so it hasn't had any meetings yet, which will be nice because it'll be a first meet for everyone and it won't be too much of an issue when I only stay a few months.

However while I was in the library I received a phone call from Rydgers Hotel. They offered me a interview for this afternoon which is exciting. Unfortunately the storm caused a power cut to the library. So we ended up being kicked out because the library could not stay open without any power. Thankfully an exceedingly nice woman in the library offered me a ride back to the hostel which was very kind of her as it was in the complete wrong direction to where she needed to go.

At the hostel the rain finally stopped so I walked down to my interview had a very nice interview and got offered the job. This is ideal because it would mean I can keep the work for accommodation and work in the evenings at the hotel which is something I have done before and I'm very used to. He said he would email me at some point this weekend with a confirmation and hopefully I can start next week.

I then decided as it was almost sunset to take a seat by the water and watch as the sun set. I did manage to glimpse 1 dolphin but it was not a very successful look. Camila came down and we had a bit of a walk and talk before going back to the hostel for the evening.

  • Saturday's

    2023年5月27日, オーストラリア ⋅ 🌙 13 °C

Camellia and I decided to start the day with toasties. The sun was shining beautifully down us this morning and everyone in the entire town seemed to be out for the morning.

We had a very nice breakfast and I will definitely be returning once I have some money. It was an amazing toastie and was far too big for just breakfast so I got lunch as well.

I did my usual morning work at the hostel before deciding to eat my toastie for lunch and going for a bit of a walk through town.

Back at the hostel, I ran into Amelia who was about to begin a workout and invited me to join. She wanted to go to the gym but her gym is closed between 12 and 3 every day and on Saturdays and Sundays which seems exceedingly stupid to me but there we go. She decided to do a home workout and I decided to join her. Berber also joined us for the workout. We ended up doing 10 minutes of various different workouts. At the end, for some reason I decided to join Amelia in the swimming pool. The swimming pool is basically freezing cold because it is not heated and the sun only touches a third of it for some of the day so it is a very cold pool. I did not enjoy my dip, I was very vocal about that but we managed it and it was a nice way to spend an afternoon.

In the evening I finally began my crochet top that I've been thinking of making and enjoyed some bridgerton.

  • Birthday sunsets

    2023年5月28日, オーストラリア ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

Today began as per usual with the work in the hostel, before I decided to spend most of my afternoon in the TV room watching some movies. I did not want to do much and it seemed, neither did anyone else so we did not much, together.

However in the afternoon it was Berber's birthday so we went out to the waterfront to watch the sunset time get pizzas. Amelia and I managed to distract Berber with a dolphin siting and lead her away from the group. They then stealthily lit the cake we had got her and we all sang. We drew the attention of everyone and she was throughly embarrassed but loved it.

The sunset was one of the best with the clouds and we had a lot of fun. It began to get pretty cold as per usual so we left quickly and headed to the pizza place. We got takeaway so we could eat our pizzas at the hsotel with a movie. We watched the Princess Diaries 2, as we had watched the first one a few days before.

  • A goodbye

    2023年5月29日, オーストラリア ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Today was just not a great day.

I ended up working in the white house which is a house on the hostel property but not apart of the hostel. They are currently renovating this house and are using the free labour which is fair to be honest but I ended up in the kitchen. Who ever left the house last, did not clean up after themselves. There was food everywhere and the fridge, as I took photos of, is disgusting. There was a large amount of food just left, which was all out of date and various stages of decay. It was not fun to clean and I did not enjoy it.

After I had some lunch which did end up being very nice and then I spent the afternoon just reading and relaxing. I seem to be finding that I'm not doing much except relaxing which I quite enjoy.

Unfortunately I did receive an email from the cafe I have done a trial for on Friday revoking the offer so that was less than ideal and I have not heard from the hotel either.

In the afternoon, I went down to the hotel to ask what was going on and apparently he has been in meetings all weekend. He will supposedly contact me when he gets the next opportunity but they don't know when that's going to be. I am not holding out much hope.

We went for another walk down to see the sunset this evening as it was Camilla's last day. She is returning to Sunshine Coast where she is living and will then be taking a flight to the middle of nowhere to work in the mines for 2 weeks. I knew she was not staying for long, and I have really enjoyed hanging out with her and will be thoroughly bored now that she is gone and noone is willing to come on walks with me all the time.

  • Finally

    2023年5月30日, オーストラリア ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

Today I finally got the call I had been waiting for. Though it was not the one I had expected. The Greek Restaurant where my roommate Suri works called and offered me a shift for tonight. He seemed very insistent on the phone which makes me think he is very desperate but I will take any shifts he can give me.

The hostel work was same as it always was and i spent the afternoon doing a workout with Berber and then completing my RSA bridging course for NSW. It is exceedingly annoying and expensive to do but super easy and took little more than an hour. I was far from thrilled to be doing it but as it gives me I job I will.

The job itself was exceptionally easy. I am used to 5 star and silver service which this place is not. I was a little confused as to why he insisted on me watching this evening. I was not allowed to take orders only run food and make drinks. Not ideal but I got paid the same I dont care too much.

  • Busy day

    2023年5月31日, オーストラリア ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Today ended up being one of my busiest today's since arriving in Port Macquarie.

I began my day with the sunrise yoga again. It was not that cold this week and the yoga we did was more of a faster flowing practice which I enjoyed. I got my coffee from the cafe as per usual amd decided to also buy a cookie today. I then took my cookie and my coffee for a bit of a walk along the beach and decided to sit down watch the surfers.

The weather seems to be constantly bright and sunny here which I am loving. Did the painted rock walk and found more I like.

Back at the hostel I did my shift at the hostel but as soon as I was done I had to rush off. I needed to get to a small area around 30mins out of town to get my RSA accredited. Why I have to get it done in person I dont know but there we go. The walk didnt take long it was just not very nice. Along main roads the whole way.

Back at the hostel, Berber and I did a bit of a work out and then I headed to work. Work was mildly better than yesterday. They still wont let me do anything which is really annoying. Also today there was one girl with an RSA and she was also taking all the orders. So I was only allowed to run food which another girl was also doing that. So actually I didnt do a lot. Which was really frustrating. But I got paid for it.

  • Fridays

    2023年6月2日, オーストラリア ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

    Today was my day off.

I started off the morning in with reading some more of my book club book. 'Oh William' is ok. I'm not loving it, I think its because the characters are all in the 60s and 70s I'm just a little removed from their situation. The main premise of the book is about family, what you choose to do with your life, how family influences how you can change your life and what you really know about your parents and their lives before you. Overall it's ok but I'm not loving it is what I'm saying.

I went down to a cafe called Drury Lane I've not been there yet but it's one that Lucy works in. The food menu was a little strange for a cafe so I just got a coffee. The coffee was very good and Lucy wrote a little note with the coffee that she made for me so love that. I then came back to the hostel and sat by the pool for a little bit
I went inro the shade because it was very warm again today and I read some more of my book and watched a bit of TV. Didn't do at lot.

I then went back into my room as I was feeling very tired after all of sun and heat. I did some more of my crocheting, one sleeve ia coming along well.

Then yesterday Femke took a photo of all of us on our camera and she sent that photo of that photo to me. Femke ended up leaving this morning as she is going up to Byron Bay so we have a little bit of a party last night and say goodbye to her.

  • Long weekend

    2023年6月3日, オーストラリア ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

    Saturday was great.

I made breakfast and found someone had left a jar of real marmite in the hostel free bin. I was so happy. A depressingly large amount!

Work was chill as per usual and when I finished I decided to go down to the water. All morning music had been playing and I could hear it as I worked, so I followed the sounds. The music was coming from a massive festival style area. There were loads of stalls all supporting local aboriginal artists and the musicians were all aboriginal as well.

I found a small walk that I hadn't done before that wrapped around from Settlement to the wharf which I loved. A very cute quite walk with a new view for me.

I decided to walk around the headland to Town Beach and had a little picnic/main character moment. I had my podcast playing teaching me about the mummification and tombing of the ancient Egyptians (egyptology is fascinating). I crotched until my ball of wool ran out and read some of my book.

I didnt do much for the rest of the day. Just relaxed and enjoyed my saturday.
