    Norham to Berwick. Last day😟😃🥰

    May 15, 2024 in England ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

219.6miles. 10.1 miles today. We’ve arrived. Lovely walk along the Tweed. Past the world’s oldest suspension bridge. Last bit quite narrow and nettley. Then 4 bridges at Berwick. Beautiful day. Prosecco and pizza. Fantastic. Nearly missed the train🥺.
Great journey again. Thanks to all our helpers. Invaluable. 😘😘.
Helen won’t do the coastal path next year cos it’s been renamed the King Charles 111 coastal path 🥺

  • Westnewton to Norham

    May 14, 2024 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

15.5m.Delivered safely back to Westnewton by Les,Nancy and Mavis dog. They went to do some of St Cuthberts way and we went north for our route through nettles and whin. After some time I realised I had had a rather silly error of nevigation. 🤔😟. We then had to redraw a route on slightly more wee roads. Heh ho. But it took us past the Battleof Flodden sight. Another history lesson. In short 1513 battle England won and Scotland lost10000 men including King James1V. Onwards through lush farmland to the mouth of the Till nearly. Good castle at Twizel. More nettles as we followed the Tweed to Norham. Met by L& N at the pub😊Read more

  • Cheviot to Westnewton

    May 13, 2024 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

15m Perfect camping spot. Shame it rained heavily and kept me awake a little. But a beautiful morning. Set off up to the Pennine way ridge then onto the flagstones. Decided to go to top of Cheviot on a lovely morning. Came off northwards into a pretty Glen of Lambden Burn, surprised by metalled Road and onto College Burn Glen. Swapped onto a lovely riverside path. (A bit up and downy and not near enough the river!) eventually to where we could dip our hot feet and have a bite to eat. River goes into a fairly spectacular gorge. Path went through a ford then Out at Westnewton where Les was kindly waiting. 😊. Lovely evening at Anderson’s and great to see Colin and Finn too.Read more

  • Rothbury to Usway Burn Cheviot

    May 12, 2024 in England ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

17.1 miles. Hearty breakfast and we were off along the River Coquet. Some Road some footpath got us moving quickly through Thropton and onto Sharperton for a quick stop before the bridleway took us across the river. Opted for flipflops. Onwards past Harbottle and on a lovely path past a lime kiln to Alwinton and the pub. Had a drink and some packed lunch and then started off speedily up Clennill Street- a delightful grassy Roman Road. It led onto a metalled forest road harder on the feet but quick progress. We rounded the corner to where we had planned to camp and saw a fantastic pool in the river below a waterfall. Heaven. Quick skinny dip( a first for Helen) we were hot but slightly cooler air temperature now. Popped the tent up in a perfect location.Read more

  • Elsden to Rothbury

    May 11, 2024 in England ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

14miles Wonderful start to the day with another fantastic breakfast. Eggs Royale with spinach. Beautiful. Heard the waitress say she lived in Rothbury so we asked her if she would take our bags. Fantastic. Had a tour of the B&B - newly done up beautiful rooms. Bird in Bush gets top marks. Hot day from start. Soon into forest with multiple blockages so hard going. Took detours along forest tracks then eventually onto St Oswalds way where the going improved. Met a fella going the opposite direction going to Ravenglass. Had a good ‘walks we’ve done ‘blether. Managed to get into thick Heather for a while then dropped down to a busy carpark. Lots of local walks up Simon Side. Look nice. Last few kilometres into Rothbury where we had a welcome ice cream and a foot dip in river. On to the pub we’re staying at after buying local cheese and bread at the deli.Read more

  • Day 9 Wark to Elsden

    May 10, 2024 in England ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

17.34 miles. 474m ascent. What a splendid night we had at Battlesteads. Fantastic food. Wonderful breakfast but we had to leave. Off uphill to Birtle and then over farmland and moorland, through an estate and onwards to Forrest. Shoes got covered in ? Pollen. Nothing remarkable really but pleasant if a little hot. Reached a half way lough- but it was hidden so went further to a remarkable sheep fold with tiny door and filled with huge marked boulders. Apparently an Andy Goldsworthy sculpture. Lunch here. And onwards past an old railway line , upwards by forestry then very tussocky stuff. Saw a very brave row deer. Eventually reached the A68 and crossed this with a down and up (snipe)and down and up and down to a welcome pub at Elsden. Well deserved drinks.Read more

  • Day 8 Hexham to Wark

    May 9, 2024 in England ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

16.8miles. Walked into Hexham for a Greggs breakfast- of course. And various supplies. Then off along the South Tyne. Pleasant flat river path then onto the North Tyne before heading north towards Hadrians wall. A welcome break and coffee at Brocolitia fort. Not a lot to see. Onwards and still up across moorland then along a wooded area and river crossing. Into Wark where we are in Battlesteads pub. Very posh- until we arrived. A wonderful shower and clean up.Read more

  • Day 8 Allenheads to Hexham Racecourse

    May 8, 2024 in England ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

16.2 m After a full English at the hotel we set off upwards back to the moor. Excellent tracks made walking east past an owl, curlews, lapwing, golden plover and a chatty wall builder. After a few hours we headed down into farmland and sheep and then wooded areas and mud! Good walking past some happy quiet cows and eventually to the Diptonmill pub that was conveniently still open. Had a pint of cider that tasted like Apple juice so had another and discovered it was 5.8%. We giggled our way uphill to the visible from miles away racecourse via lots of wild garlic. Helen chatted to the groundsman but no discount on the £25 /night fee. 🥺. Nice night. Rice and Wensleydale cheese for tea to the sound of the curlew.Read more

  • Day7 Garrigill to Allenheads

    May 7, 2024 in England ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

12miles. Brighter start to the day. Everything dry thanks to great bunkhouse. Upwards immediately to the sound of the curlews and a few lapwing. Over a soggy moor to Nenthead, an old lead mining village, where we got supplies and a cuppa from a friendly community shop. Then onwards on Isaac’s tea trail ( not a lot of tea now) to Coalclough with more mining remains and then on a lovely moorland path up and down and round to Allenheads. A long village, at 1300 feet the highest in England. Into a fabulous and friendly tea shop, Hemmels before getting to our pub for night. 1770’s building with owners of same era. Cosy though.Read more

  • Day 6 Dufton to Garrigill

    May 6, 2024 in England ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

15.8miles A bit of a dreich drive over to Dufton with hills in mist but a dry start. Gradual ascent up Pennine way. Into mist. Did last bit on road and very steep. The golf balls of Dun fell appeared briefly Our route took us north and down from here past many lead hushings. Softer under foot than Pennine way route. Saw and heard many birds curlew, lapwing, Pippits skylark golden plover dipper wagtail sandpiper short eared owl , wren and grouse.
Left the Tees and up a little to source of Tyne. We chose the river route with many waterfalls and some beautiful Birds Eye primrose. Then the rain started. Very heavy. And continued for the next hour till Garrigill with some close lightening. Got to a closed bit of footpath- no bridge. Thankfully a short diversion via a big waterfall and viaduct. At Garrigill we are hugely grateful for the village hall bunkhouse with drying room, kitchen etc. Camping would have been less fun

  • Day 5 Ravenber Askham to Dufton

    May 5, 2024 in England ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

14.9 miles. Forecast was rain so set off in waterproofs but soon came off and no rain all day. Went past Lowther castle - an impressive structure in process of restoration. Then a red sports car careered towards us- Huw and Allison 😊 They had been at Leighton Moss for a dawn chorus walk and came to find us. Short walk with them, then onwards and met them again near Morland, where we had a tea and toasted teacake with them. How lovely. Then off again through fields and tracks. Through a farm with a friendly farmer and over A66. Some boisterous cattle caused a little detour then into Dufton. 3 times we’ve been here previously via high cup nick on Pennine way and LEJOG. Simon and Lesley were at the tea shop to meet us😊. Home again for the wonderful platter and dinner.

    May 4, 2024 in England ⋅ 🌫 10 °C

12.9miles742m ascent. Forgot to say we heard my first cuckoo yesterday 😊. The promised storm didn’t arrive. A bit of wind and rain but no lightening. A wren woke me early, singing away in the mist. The farmer was around again on his quad. We set off steeply up to High Street. Met some Wainwright coast to coasters who were a bit lost and one with a huge rucksack, and a carrier in his hand🤩. Carried on in mist over High Raise with a slight clearing then back to mist. Onwards and down to Askham where we met Simon and Lesley at the Queens Head. Wonderful pizza. Back for a bath and the wonderful platter. 😊Read more

  • Day 3Skelwith Bridge to High St bottom

    May 3, 2024 in England ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

17km 568m Lovely morning. Lightning forecast and farmer strongly advised us not to go up high. We had planned this evening at top of High Street. Set off to Ambleside on lovely old track. Ambleside not too busy. And a Greggs. Marvellous. We even got given an extra roll by a friendly worker. Set off to Troutbeck on another delightful track with great views over Windermere. A tea shop was encountered entering into Troutbeck so we had to sample the wares. Very nice too. Still no rain but getting muggy. Decided to heed the farmers warning so plenty of time to get along the Dale to the highest bit we would get flat ground. A nice early finish. Both much fresher. Feet no worse for me. Helen Ok with her vast amounts of Vaseline. We’ve fetched pasties from Ambleside to enjoy for supper.Read more

  • Day 2 Wasdale Head to Skelwith Bridge

    May 2, 2024 in England ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

15.5miles 1348m ascent. Breezy start today and got windier as we got up higher towards Great Gable. Great views from top but being blown about a lot. Down to Sty Head and onwards to Sprinkling Tarn and Angle Tarn. Great views. Too many people for a skinny dip. Down to Old Dungeon Gill for a well earned pint then onwards along good paths to Skelwith Bridge. I ran out of energy - not helped by the thought of a 25%hill to get to the campsite. Lovely spot when we got there. Lots of fighter plane activity today. Lots of ☀️. Forecast a bit ropey for tomorrow.Read more

  • Ravenglass to Wasdale Head 24.11km

    May 1–2, 2024 in England ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

Helen and I met at Carlisle for another (shorter) extravaganza. Train late so 1 hour later on wee train to Ravenglass. Great wee train in sunshine ☀️ at last. Great route through Muncaster castle in full rhododendron glory. Then onwards to Eskdale Green and along NT river and woods to Dalegarth station for an ice cream.
Then up and over with the sky getting darker past a wonderful yarn to Wasdale in light rain.
Feeling the packs but already feeling better with a 🍺
