    Ain’t No Mountain High Enough…

    September 9, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 27 °C

    Estella to Los Arcos
    Day 8 - 21km

We had another early start this morning with our first stop just a couple of kms out of town at the famous wine fountain. Unfortunately we were too early as it doesn’t start gushing wine till 8 😧. We pushed on regardless and had a lovely walk up the mountain. The views, again, were incredible and we had a nice breeze to keep us refreshed. We passed a lovely Spanish lady serenading us with a piano accordion along the path which was a treat to see in the middle of nowhere 😍 We were walking through wine country with lots of Vineyards and Olive trees. After a couple of coffee/lunch stops we arrived around 1pm at Los Arcos which is another quaint little town with lots of interesting streets. We were happy to relieve ourselves of our backpacks at our accommodation and after a freshen up we headed for the town square and had a well deserved jug of Sangria with a few other pilgrims. Early night tonight as we have a big walk tomorrow. 🚶‍♀️🚶‍♀️Read more

    Running from the Bulls!

    September 10, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

    Los Arcos to Logrono
    Day 9 - 29 km

We had a dramatic thunder and lightning storm overnight, which thankfully got rid of some humidity, but left the track rather mucky and tricky to cross in places. We had a big day ahead, with lots of up and down hills, so got on the trail earlyish and had 19 kms nailed by 11am. 👟👟It was then we happened on a little town called Viana, who were having a big festival which included a smaller version of the running of the bulls! We stopped off for a couple of hours ( and a couple of wines 🍷🍷) and thoroughly enjoyed joining the excitement. 🐂 Had a fun afternoon but then had to trek on the final 10 kms in the 30 ° heat. 😔 Had a lovely catch up with camino friends tonight. ❤Read more

Little Ole Wine Drinker Me (& Me)

    September 11, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

    Logrono to Najera
    Day 10 - 30 km

We spent an another amazing day trekking through the wine fields ( vineyards). The grapes, mainly red, were ripe and definitely ready for picking ( in our professional opinion) 😏 and we had another day of spectacular views which meant we must of done some climbing, however it was an easy day ( although long…) on the Camino trail. 😍

This morning, after waiting for the storm to pass, we headed off around 7.15. We walked through the centre of Logrono which was very impressive and after a coffee/ breakfast stop we started our long trek to Najera ☺️. After a couple of refreshment stops, and another busker on the path, we arrived in Najera around 3.30pm. Not one of our favourite stops this far, doesn’t have the same quaint feel, but enjoyed a couple of beers and wines and a nice salad. Looking forward to a shorter walk tomorrow.

    Taking it easssy...

    September 12, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

    Najera to Santo Domingo
    Day 11- 21 km

Cruisy day today, the hike went by in a flash! Strange how 21 kms now feels like a pittance after two 30 kms days! 😆 We arrived in Santo Domingo around midday, stopped in the town square and ate a lovely, carb loaded pilgrims lunch! Loving the Paella 😋
We have great accommodation tonight with a common kitchen and living space so we did the real pilgrim thing, went to supermarket, bought cheap meal and wine and had a night in...so enjoyed it. Officially over 200 kms in now and bodies are handling the physical challenges just fine !!! Wohoo! 👊

    The Hills Are Alive …

    September 13, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

    Santo Domingo to Belorado
    Day 12 - 23.5 km

    With Sunflowers 🌻
Today instead of the vineyards we spent the day walking through paddocks of Sunflowers. Unfortunately they had passed their best but it was still a delightful view, and we appreciated the artistic designs on a few of them. 😊

We started the day at 7.30 after a breakfast at our lovely accommodation. It was cloudy so a nice temperature to walk in. A relatively easy day over rolling hills again. Arrived at Belorado around 1.30 in time to check in to our Albergue and then find some well needed sustenance. 🍺🍺Looking forward to a Pilgrims meal night… 13 Euro for 3 courses including a bottle of wine. 🍷🍷😜

    What goes up...must come down!

    September 14, 2023 in Spain ⋅ 🌙 18 °C

    Belorado - Ages
    Day 13 - 28kms

Day 13 was looking like a stinker with a huge climb ( 3rd steepest on the trail!) and a looong walk to get to Ages. However once the journey is broken down to smaller interesting parts, with the lovely forest walk, surprise food stalls, a couple of bulls on the path!!🐂🐂 nice coffee stop, lots of cute wee villages, and 4 kms from the finish line we stopped for beer and pizza! 🍻🍕 time went by just fine and we reached the gorgeous little town of Ages. We visited the beautiful church...and check out the birds nest on top!! Belongs to a white stork! Had a lovely " home style " cooked meal.
So actually , another lovely day !!! 😆

Gonna have fun in the city..

    September 15, 2023 in Spain ⋅ 🌩️ 21 °C

    Ages to Burgos
    Day 14 - 24km

Left our Albergue at 7am , definitely needed our headlights, couldn’t find breakfast in this village so we walked on to the next and had a coffee and a donut (American style). 😧😊

It was an uneventful walk with only a small incline. We walked through similar countryside as yesterday which was nice but spent a few kms beside the motorway on the way to Burgos until we found the river route which was very relaxing.

What kept us going was the idea of our day off walking to relax and see the sights and “having fun in the city”.

Our first impressions was this is a city not to miss. The Cathedral is amazing, and we spent the afternoon/ night enjoying the vibrant feel of the town square. Looking forward to investigating more tomorrow.

    Burgos - Rest Day
    Day 15

On our way back to our room last night we happened upon a big group enjoying some very cool Salsa dancing 💃, so cool to watch, they were having so much fun!
It was lovely to have a little sleep in this morning 😴 we then sat and finished booking our accommodation on the trail, as it's just too busy to just try to wing it. We found a cafe serving bacon and eggs 🥓🍳 for breakfast and then had a lovely wander through the streets.
The most special part of Burgos by far, is the spectacular Cathedral. ⛪The construction began in 1221 and completed in 1567. We just simply didn't know where to look on our tour, everything was completely mind blowing, room after room after room. An absolute must see, and we were so pleased we stopped long enough to take it in. We caught up with a few camino friends for dinner, now back home and ready for a 30 km day tomorrow. 👣👣👣

Rain In Spain Falls Mainly in the Plains

    September 17, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

    Burgos to Hontanas
    Day 16 - 31 Km

As we found out today, especially in the Meseta!!
We started out around 8am with a cloudy day. Lovely walk out of Burgos by the river. We encountered rain about 5km into our day but only a little. Again we were walking through fields of sunflowers and beautiful rolling hills.
On the way out of the first little village called Rabes de las Calzades we encountered a beautiful little church. Here we were amazed by the lovely nuns who gave us, individually, a very special pilgrims blessing, along with a lovely pendant, which we will treasure. 💕 We were very overwhelmed by the dedication of these beautiful people ( and we both had misty eyes when we left. 🥺)
Our next stop was at a pub around 10km away our destination for the night. It was a welcome relief from the rain so we stopped for a pilgrim meal which included a 🍷 . The rain persisted until about 2pm but by then we were cold and wet. The village we are staying at tonight was a very welcome sight after a 31km day. We had the best host ever, who gave us a wonderful night, gorgeous food and a fantastic atmosphere! Full bellies and ready for sleep 😴

    The Long and Windy Road...

    September 18, 2023 in Spain ⋅ 🌙 16 °C

    Hontanas to Boadilla del Camino
    Day 17- 29kms

Another big day on the track. Two 30ish kms days in a row is hard work!. Had a decent hill/ mountain to climb today, but again amazing reaching the top. 😊
We are currently in an area called " the Mesta " known for its long windy roads, through barren land, no shelter from sun or storms, and a long way between stops. Many choose to skip this part, but we were very pleased we did not today. I know we have talked of the many amazing views, but again today, next level!🌄
We enjoyed the walk today, the last 5 kms of a big walk is always a challenge... you are weary and your pack feels heavier...😩
What a fantastic afternoon/night though once we arrived! Had a fun afternoon playing cards with some Aussie friends ( King and Arse!) And then the biggest pilgrim's get together meal so far, spectator! it was awesome fun!!!
    We will sleep well tonight!!!🍷🍷🥳🥳👯‍♀️😴😴
