  • A night out in SLC

    2 September 2022, Amerika Serikat ⋅ ☀️ 34 °C

A hot day calls for a refreshing beer - at least that's Fergus' view.

After a fair walk through the heat to the Bewilder Brewery, a beer is even more deserved.

Needed some food too so opted for the American version of bangers and mash. Not bad but not as good as when my chef makes them at home 😬

I tried a Raspberry sour and Fergus had a simple Kölsch. Note the face of Charlie Sheen?
Well, our guide Anthony/Nino Firetto had a story to tell about him too 😂

Finishing off listening to some life music at the Rabbit hole

  • Travelling up North to 'Bear Country'

    3 September 2022, Amerika Serikat ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

Leaving Salt Lake City behind driving up Interstate 15 to Idaho Falls and then across to Jackson (in Wyoming), as our entry point to Yellowstone.

Wide open spaces and huge corn fields in Idaho. Beautiful scenery driving along Teton Pass.
Teton is another national park close to Yellowstone

A few little titbits along the way ...
👆Idaho is nicknamed “The Gem State” for the abundance of rare minerals that have been found in all corners of the state. The state gem is the Star Garnet.
👆Wyoming got its nickname “The Equality State” when it granted women the right to vote in 1869, the first state to do so
👆Salt Lake City is at an elevation of 1300m, roughly half the elevation we will encounter in Yellowstone. Hope the two nights there will help with acclimatisation.

  • Yellowstone - Elephant Back Trail

    4 September 2022, Amerika Serikat ⋅ 🌙 6 °C

Yellowstone National Park is one of the highlights on our trip. We have been looking forward to being here for a long time.

Arriving in the park to see the sun coming over the mountains after a very early start from Jackson was just wonderful.

Elephant Back Mountain was our first hike of the day after being fully briefed by Kinsey, our guide, on how to behave and use bear spray when encountering wild animals.
    First lesson: Don't run!!

Elephant Back Mountain is a 3.6-mile lollipop loop that climbs to a plateau top with unrivalled views of Yellowstone Lake and the Absaroka Mountain.

Elevation change of 244m was a little challenging for the first day. But the views at 2624m are absolutely stunning.

A couple of titbits I remember
👆Yellowstone was the home of one Native American tribe: the Sheepeaters (or Sheep Eaters), so-called for their primary food source, bighorn sheep. They were seminomadic hunters who followed the bighorn sheep migration to high elevation in the summer and back down to lower valleys in the winter.
They used to make spearheads from the obsidian that they found in the soil. Making their weapons strong.
👆The fires of 1988 collectively were the largest recorded wildfire in Yellowstone. Even 34 years later the impacts can still be seen. Some of the areas haven't recovered yet and regrowth is very limited. Also, the burned, dead trees hardly decompose because of the dry air.

  • Yellowstone - Storm point

    4 September 2022, Amerika Serikat ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

It's still day 1 of our time in Yellowstone!

Lunch stop at Yellowstone lake with a view to Elephant Back Mountain. Not that it's easily recognisable as the back of an 🐘

Driving to the next trail head we saw our first Bison standing on the side of the road enjoying the sunshine.

Hiking Storm Point Trail in the afternoon.
This trail begins in the open meadows overlooking Indian Pond and Yellowstone Lake. While walking along Indian Pond we saw another Bison resting in the shore.
The trail continues through the trees and out to scenic, wind-swept Storm Point. And oh boy, it was windy. Hats had to be held in our hands.
Following the shoreline to the west, the trail eventually loops back through the lodgepole forest and returns to Indian Pond.

Driving through Haydon Valley on the way to our lodge in Canyon village we saw a big herd of Bison feeding in the meadow of Yellowstone River.

  • Yellowstone - Mount Washburn hike

    5 September 2022, Amerika Serikat ⋅ ⛅ 8 °C

Day 2 of our Yellowstone adventure.
Hiking Mount Washburn up to 3115m, the toughest hike of the week .

We set off early from the Canyon Village (meet at 6:15) to beat the crowds and the sun. Good strategy as we managed to hike up mostly in shade and cool(ish) temperature.

Gorgeous views over Yellowstone National Park all around. Sadly I forgot the names of the mountain ranges already.

Views got worse during the day with smoke blowing in from the fires in Idaho but still a great place to be.

Made even more exciting by seeing a black 🐻 gorging on pine nuts (only saw moving branches to start with) but got lucky by him descending the tree as we made it up the next switchback

    A few more titbits ...
👆The mule deer is a deer indigenous to western North America; it is named for its ears, which are large like those of the mule.
👆 Yellowstone was established 1872 and covers nearly 3,500-sq.-mile area atop a volcanic hot spot / super volcano. There are:
👉 nearly 300 species of birds, 16 species of fish, five species of amphibians, six species of reptiles, and 67 species of mammal
👉 more than 600 lakes and ponds
👉 over 10000 thermal features - hot springs, mud pots, geysers and steam vents
👉 over 1000 miles of hiking trails - we will only do a minute fraction of it.

  • Yellowstone - Yellowstone Grand Canyon

    5 September 2022, Amerika Serikat ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

We managed to view the Lower Falls and the Canyon from two different viewpoints.

First we saw the falls from the North Rim after a little afternoon stroll from our lodging at Canyon Village.

Later after dinner in the posh Lake Hotel, we stopped off at Artists Point on the South Rim to enjoy the sunset overlooking the Falls.

The Yellowstone Grand Canyon has been formed as a result of erosion by the Yellowstone river and is roughly 32 km long. Parts of the canyon are 366 m deep. And the canyon is still getting deeper, longer and wider by continuing erosion.

  • Yellowstone - 🐺 Tracker

    6 September 2022, Amerika Serikat ⋅ ☀️ 3 °C

Another early start but the early bird catches the worm or manages to see some wolves.

On our way to the north part of the park we stumbled across a group of 'Wolf Trackers, who had pitched up proper spotter scopes along the road watching a pack of wolves feeding on a kill (bison).

We were lucky enough to see some of the wolves walking through the grass and I definitely saw a black one with my naked eye even if it was only a tiny spot in the distance.

The view through the spotter scopes of the 🐺 Trackers was amazing though.

According to the tracker, the pack had five cubs this year. This is amazing as the wolfes struggle with feeding in during the summer as all herbivores are in full strength.

Sadly no pictures to show just one of the 'crime scene' but a few titbits to remember
👆When Yellowstone National Park was created in 1872, the wolf population was already in decline in the area
👆The last wolves were killed in Yellowstone in 1926
👆In 1995, gray wolves were reintroduced into Yellowstone in the Lamar Valley. The reintroduction program was very controversial
👆One of the reasons wolves were reintroduced was to manage the elk population as without a natural predator their numbers became unsustainable

  • Yellowstone - Beaver Ponds Trail

    6 September 2022, Amerika Serikat ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

It's already day 3 - where has the time gone?

Today we explore some of the north of the park and head out on the Beaver Ponds Trail.

It's a 5 mile loop walk through a variety of animal habitats. The Beaver Ponds are actually outside of the park in Montana. Another state to add to our list 😉

We were all hopeful to catch some elk, bear, pronghorn and deer. We saw lots of evidence such as zones where animals bedded down for the night and some bear poo but sadly none of the animals themselves.

It was the hottest day so far and we had a rather a hot and long slog back to Mammoth through Sagebrush with no animal sightings to take our mind off.

But still, the scenery is just stunning.

    One little titbit ..
👆Montana's Nickname is 'Big Sky Country' or 'Treasure State'.
👉 Montana's large gold and silver mines gave ruse to its nickname, the Treasure State
👉 “Big Sky Country” is a very recent addition of nickname and is a reference to the unobstructed skyline in the state that seems to overwhelm the landscape at times.

  • Yellowstone - Mammoth Hot Springs

    6 September 2022, Amerika Serikat ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Still Day 3 and after a short cool-down we explore the Mammoth Hot Springs.

Mammoth Hot Springs is large area of hot springs that has been created over thousands of years as hot water from the spring cooled and deposited calcium carbonate. Although the springs lie outside the Yellowstone caldera, their energy has been attributed to the same magmatic system that fuels other Yellowstone geothermal areas.

    A few little titbits ...
👆At Yellowstone, the rain and melted snow seeps into the earth. The water is quickly warmed by heat radiating from a partially molten magma chamber deep underground.
👆After moving throughout this “plumbing” system, the hot water rises up through a system of small fissures. Some carbon dioxide is dissolved in the hot water, forming a weak, carbonic acid solution.
👆In the Mammoth area, the hot, acidic solution dissolves large quantities of limestone on its way up through the rock layers. Above ground and exposed to the air, some of the carbon dioxide escapes from the solution. Without it, the dissolved limestone can’t remain in the solution, so it reforms into a solid mineral. This white, chalky mineral is deposited as the travertine that forms the terraces

  • Yellowstone - Geyser Gazing

    7 September 2022, Amerika Serikat ⋅ 🌧 7 °C

Our fourth day in Yellowstone - easy day on lungs and legs as hardly any elevation gain to be managed.

Started the day early (again) to catch the sunrise over the hills while walking the boardwalk in Upper Geyser Basin right next to our lodging.

Gorgeous light to take some pictures.

The Upper Geyser Basin is famous for hosting Old Faithful Geyser. The Upper Geyser Basin also boasts the largest concentration of geysers in the world, including many of the worlds largest geysers.

Five of the largest geysers are predicted by the Park Rangers. But some of them with quite a generous time window of up to +/- 90 minutes. Patience and dedication is required 😃

So why do geysers and hot springs exist in Yellowstone?
👆 Far below the surface of Yellowstone exists a magma chamber that super-heats the rocks and water above
👆The super-heated water returns to the surface through fractures and weaknesses in rock layers where it erupts as geyser or forms hot springs
👆While Yellowstone is a volcano, the last major eruption was 640,000 years ago

  • Yellowstone - Lone Star Geyser

    7 September 2022, Amerika Serikat ⋅ ☀️ 9 °C

After walking the boardwalk in Upper Geyser Basin, we made our way to the Lone Star Geyser

When originally named, the geyser was thought to be completely isolated but more geysers have now been identified in the area.

It's a 2.5 mile there-and-back trail, an easy walk along Firehole River and mostly in the shade. We did 'boogie' along though to not miss the action.

Lone Star Geyser has a large cone about 12 feet high, and erupts regularly and predictably about every 3 hours, blasting water and steam up to 50 feet in the air.

It's performance can last up to 30 minutes. The major eruption is often preceded by minor eruption

We certainly had to be patient but the wait was definitely worth it even if it didn't last 30 minutes.

  • Yellowstone - need to talk about food...

    7 September 2022, Amerika Serikat ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Our last night in Yellowstone staying at the Snow Lodge at Old Faithful.

We had table service at dinner in the Obsidian Restaurant. Highlight on the menu: Bison Burger.
A little weird having just seen a🦬 walking outside the restaurant 😳
    But very tasty indeed

And over breakfast the next morning our new American friends finally managed to get us to try 'biscuits and gravy' - a American breakfast stable.

For the uninitiated (i.e. non-American) 'biscuits & gravy' needs a more in depth explanation ...
👆 The biscuit is similar to scones but much lighter and fluffier. More like a savoury sponge cake.
👆The gravy is a white sauce with or without sausage meat or mushrooms.

Well, let's just say that it's not my cup of tea 😬
Fergus didn't mind it too much though.

  • Yellowstone - Old Faithful

    7 September 2022, Amerika Serikat ⋅ 🌧 28 °C

Old Faithful is in the Upper Geyser Basin, one of the three large geyser basins along the Firehole River.

The Old Faithful Inn is a national historic landmark. Built in 1903-1904 with local logs and stone, the Inn is considered the largest log structure in the world.
The towering lobby features a massive stone fireplace and a hand-crafted clock made of copper, wood and wrought iron serving as focal points.
It's just stunning being there and we even managed to have dinner in the large dining room.

Of course, being so close to Old Faithful, one is just always waiting for the next eruption - at sunset, sunrise or during lunch on the terrace overlooking the Geyser.

It's very exciting being so close to the Geyser.

  • Yellowstone - Fairy Falls

    8 September 2022, Amerika Serikat ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

Sadly our last day in Yellowstone. The last five days have just flown by.

Today we are out for an early morning hike to Fairy Falls, an easy 2.5 mile walk from the trailhead and the last opportunity to enjoy the atmospheric early morning light.

Fairy Falls, 200 feet (61 m) high, is one of Yellowstone's most spectacular waterfalls.
Brave souls can even go for a dip at the bottom of the falls. But apparently the water is rather cold.
Thank you Scott, for taking one for the team 😃

The area around Fairy Falls was heavily affected by the 1885 fires and over a hundred years later, not a lot of the dead trees have decomposed due to the dryness of the zone.

  • Yellowstone - Grand Prismatic Spring

    8 September 2022, Amerika Serikat ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

    Grand Prismatic Spring

It's the largest of Yellowstone's many colourful hot springs. It's massive and stretches approximately 200 feet (61m) across. The high temperature of its water 160F (70C°) ensures that the spring is often cloaked in steam.

Deep beneath, the magma from the active volcano heats water that rises to the surface through fissures in the rocks. The hot spring pours almost 1900 litres of hot water each minute into the Firehole River.

The intense blue colour is due to sunlight being scattered by fine particles in the water. The spring often appears to have a blue haze hovering over it. This is caused by the steam reflecting the blue from the water.

And indeed, if the sun isn't shining, the blue is less intense.

The yellow, orange, and brown colours are caused by microorganisms.

    Excelsior Geyser

In the 1880s Excelsior Geyser erupted in bursts 50 to 300 feet high. The thermal violence formed the jagged crater and apparently ruptured the geyser's underground system, causing eruptions to cease after 1890.

On September 14, 1985, Excelsior roared back to life with forty-seven hours of major eruptions. It is impossible to predict when this dormant but powerful geyser's next eruption will occur.

But best not standing too close when is happens 😬

  • Boston - Exploring Downtown

    10 September 2022, Amerika Serikat ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

With Boston, MA being a city with huge historical significance it's difficult to pick some places without making a history lesson out of it.

So just some items I found interesting
👆 Trinity Church - the building is listed as one of the ten greatest buildings in the country. The interior is stunning and has remarkable stained glass windows. At least as remarkable is the contrast of old versus new with mirrored tower blocks standing next to historic buildings
👆Boston Public Library - was America's first free city Library. The building and interior are beautiful. It contains a collection of the 'Documented History of the Presidency' of various presidents, e.g. JFK, Ronald Reagan, George W Bush etc. Didn't find anything from the Trump Presidency though (probably too early for that)
👆Boston Public Garden - was the first botanical garden in US when it opened in 1839.
👆Beacon Hill - in the 19th century described as the "most civilised street in America". The area is named after a wooden beacon that once stood on the hill to warn residents of attacks or fire.
Walking the streets on Beacon Hill, the houses are just stunning properties
👆Rose Fitzgerald Greenway & the Big Dig -
The Greenway consists of landscaped gardens, promenades, plazas, fountains and stretches over one mile through downtown neighborhoods.
The creation of the park is linked to a megaproject (Big Dig) that rerouted the main highway through the heart of the city, into the 1.5-mile tunnel. What an engineering feat.
👆North End - Hannover Street, the Italian heart in the city. Lots of restaurants, cafés, bakeries and bars. Great atmosphere, especially on Sunday when everyone is out for Sunday lunch and a Procession is moving through the streets
👆Quincy Market - was the city's fish, meat and produce market. Today it offers lots of tempting dining options.
👆 Esplanade - an area along Charles River with lagoons and parkland. Busy place at the weekend with people hanging out there. There were so many hammocks that have been put up between trees but we think there must be an early morning race to secure the best place. They looked very cozy though.

  • Boston - Freedom Trail

    11 September 2022, Amerika Serikat ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

Lots of the sites along the Freedom Trail are directly linked to the American Revolution. Walking along the trail is a lesson in partly unfamiliar history. Far too much to remember everything.

So just a few notes with a reminder to self to read up more on the American Revolution

👆 Massachusetts State House - build 1795 - 1798 was a model for the US Capitol Building in Washington.
👆 Boston Massacre - one of the most inflammatory events leading up to the American Revolution. Angry British colonists taunted British guardsmen who opened fire and killed five. Not the sort of number one would expect when hearing 'massacre'.
👆Old South Meeting House - in the days leading up to the American Revolution, citizens gathered here to challenge British rule, protesting against the Boston Massacre and the tea tax.
👆Old State House - was the seat of the colonial British government between 1713 and 1776 as well as a merchant exchange. It's wine cellar now functions as a downtown subway station
👆 Faneuil Hall - functioned simultaneously as a public market (1st floor) and town meeting place (2nd floor). Nicknamed the 'cradle of liberty' as the building hosted revolutionary figures such as Samuel Adams who rallied against British oppression. Faneuil Hall also became a historic forum for anti-slavery and women's suffrage speeches. Today it serves as a site where new citizens take the oath of allegiance
👆Old North Church - played an important role in the first battle of the American Revolution as Paul Revere learns that the British Army is preparing to march to Concord to capture the weapons stashed away by the colonists. Lanterns in the North Church alert the colonists on which route the British are going to take: 'one if by land, two if by sea'
👆Boston Tea Party - was the result of a series of events that steadily aroused the ire of colonists who considered themselves British subjects and should have the same rights and privileges as any subjects that lived in England including representation in Parliament. England was imposing laws, regulations, monopolies, and taxes (like Sugar Act, Stamp Act and finally the Tea Act) on the people of the American colonies but denying them any say in the matters. To protest against the Tea Act, colonists, some disguised as American Indians, destroyed an entire shipment of tea sent by the East India Company to Boston

A lot of history to read up on 😳

  • Boston - Waterfront

    12 September 2022, Amerika Serikat ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

Today, Boston's waterfront is fringed by many wharfs and is a reminder of the city's past as a key trading port.

The 19th century wharfs are now apartments, restaurants and hotels.

What a transformation of the coast line of Boston from the 18th century to the 20th century: most of Boston’s coastline is man-made land.

Structures built on the landfill are supported by dozens of 30 to 40-foot-long wood pilings, similar to telephone poles, that reach down through the landfill to a harder layer of clay. These pilings sit entirely below the water table, which protects them from rotting.

The extent of land filling is hard to visualize, but the two pictures provide a glimpse of the changes.

  • New England - Roadtrip

    13 September 2022, Amerika Serikat ⋅ 🌧 20 °C

Today is the start of our roadtrip in New England - MA (Massachusetts), VT (Vermont), ME (Maine) and NH (New Hampshire) - on the hunt for autumn colours and experiencing the beauty of New England.

Driving out from Boston towards the west - carefully not to hit the toll roads - it feels like a trip through English towns and places with names such as Winchester, Chelsea, Leominster, Worcester .... the list is endless

    A couple of titbits
👆Massachusetts - The pilgrims establishing the first permanent settlement in North America named this area after a nation of people and also took the name for their colony
Massachusetts is also known as "The Bay State" in reference to the Cape Cod Bay where early settlements were made.
👆Vermont - is a state known for its natural landscape, or being home to more than 100 19th-century covered wooden bridges, and as a major producer of maple syrup. So it's Pancakes for breakfast.
The state's name comes from two French words vert (green) and mont (mountain), which explains Vermont's nickname, the "Green Mountain State."
👆Maine - a state of unspoiled wilderness. The importance of seafaring in the region is evident in the many lighthouses along the coast.
Maine's nickname is the “Pine Tree State” because it has over 17 million acres of forests and has recognized the white pine tree as an officially designated state symbol.
👆New Hampshire - state motto "Live Free or Die" is the best expression for NH's individualistic spirit
New Hampshire nickname is "Granite State" because of its numerous granite quarries.

  • MA - Minute Man Monument

    13 September 2022, Amerika Serikat ⋅ 🌧 21 °C

The Minute Man Monument in Concord (about 30 min west of Boston) is very closely linked to the American Revolution and a continuation of the history lesson of the Freedom Trail.

Discontent was smoldering in the Massachusetts Bay Colony during the 1770s as Britain was increasing taxes and control over the colony.

On 19th April 1775, the discontent flared into fighting. The British army left Boston to seize the weapons and ammunition stashed away by the colonists

The colonists were warned of the raid and tried to hide the weapons. The colony didn't have an army but all free men were required to serve in their town's militia company and attend regular training. The name 'minute man' comes from fact that these 'troops' were ready to march at a moment's warning.

Early in the morning on 19th April 1775 several hundred militia men watch from nearby hills as the British search Concord.
The British were burning weapons and supplies but the militia thought the British were burning down their town and advanced to the North Bridge which was held by the British. The British soldiers fired and killed two colonists. The militia officer ordered his men to return the fire - Englishman killing Englishman.

The British army marched back to Boston but militia men along the road opened fire and killed more soldiers.
73 dead British soldiers and 41 dead colonists.

    The war had begun.

Through 1775, the colonists kept fighting to restore their rights as British subjects. On 4th July 1776, the Continental Army issues the Declaration of Independence for a new nation.
Fighting continues until 1782, when Britain and the United States sign a preliminary peace treaty.

In April 1783, George Washington declares the war has ended. Eight years after the fighting started in Concord

  • MA - Mohawk Trail

    13 September 2022, Amerika Serikat ⋅ 🌧 23 °C

The Mohawk Trail is a 69-mile scenic byway that meanders through deep forest and historic towns, passes scenic hikes and dramatic vistas, all the while criss-crossing and paralleling five major rivers— the Millers, Connecticut, Green, Deerfield and Hoosic.

The byway dates back more than 10,000 years, when Native Americans first began hunting and trading via footpaths along the rivers. Obviously, the current road is much newer and very well maintained. Making driving along very easy.

We only travelled along the Mohawk Trail for a short while through the Connecticut and Deerfield River Valleys, stopping at a couple of places to break the journey and marvel at the sights.

👆 Historic Deerfield - for much of the colonial period Deerfield was one of New England's frontier village with quite some skirmishes between the settlers and the the indigenous Pocumtuck nation.
Today, it feels like a 'live-in museum village' dedicated to the heritage and preservation of Deerfield, MA and the history of the Connecticut River Valley. There are plenty of historic houses (i.e. museums) interspersed with homes of people actually living there including a big school.
It felt all a bit unreal.
👆 Shelburne Falls - Bridge of Flowers is a lovely place to wander across. It's like a garden of flowers connecting the towns of Shelburne and Buckland.
Originally the bridge was build in 1908 as a trolley bridge to allow rail freight to be transported across as the nearby iron bridge from 1890 had a twenty ton weight limited. The bridge eventually fell into disrepair in 1927.
In 1929 the local women's club decided to create the seasonal flower garden. And what a great job they are still doing!
👆 Shelburne Falls - "Glacial Potholes" began to form after the last glacier age about 14,000 years ago. The formation of these river-eroded features have been created by the great glacial lake, Lake Hitchcock. After Lake Hitchcock drained 14,000 years ago, Deerfield River was able to cut downward into its delta sediments. This erosive process, which continues today. The river found itself on top of the gneiss bedrock and could start eroding holes in the hard gneiss
👆 Williamstown - the end of our tour along the Mohawk Trail. Just before we got there, the heavens opened and we had the most torrential rain one can imagine.
After a days driving, I wanted to walk to dinner but no way in the rain. Actually, just as well that we drove. It seems to get dark very quickly and in typical American country towns, everything is further apart than you think.

    🍻🍺🍻🍺🍻🍺🍻
So many and different types of beer around. So difficult to choose. Not really a beer drinker but found a few I like - Blue Moon, Pumpkin Ale, Blueberry Ale. No way to know how to choose - so only going by the alcohol content and setting the bar at 5%. Not many around at that level.
But imagine me drinking 6%+ beer, would pull the legs from under me.

  • VT - Hamilton Falls Trail

    14 September 2022, Amerika Serikat ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Hamilton Falls is located in Jamaica State Park - one of Vermont's State Parks along the VT100.

It's a spectacular tiered waterfall with a jaw- dropping 125-foot drop. The out and back trail (roughly 10km) starts as an easy trail on a disused railtrack but went up quite steeply after 2 miles on a path with rocks and roots and lots of water due to the downpours the day before.

The water source for the Falls is Cobb Brook which literally slices its way sideways through deeply cut gorge walls before landing at the bottom.

It was a great hike and scenery. Beautiful scenery and both Hamilton Falls and the West River were roaringly loud.

Can't do without some little titbits
👆 The area around Jamaica State Park was once an important hunting and fishing area along a major transportation route for the Sokoki Abenaki people, who travelled by canoe between the Connecticut River and Lake Champlain.
👆And then there’s the site of The Salmon Hole Massacre. In 1748, the site was one of several areas where skirmishes between British soldiers and Frenchmen and American Indians took place.
While relaxing near the river, 80 British soldiers on a scouting trip from Fort Dummer were ambushed by a small band of French men and Native Americans. Six of the soldiers were killed in what became known as the Salmon Hole Massacre.
👆The trail along West River was once a precarious railroad between Londonderry and Brattleboro.
The railroad was built with cheap, narrow-gauge track to save money, and it quickly became known as 36 miles of trouble for many reasons.
The wood-burning locomotives were not powerful enough to pull the cars up the narrow tracks. Passengers would often get out and walk along the tracks because it was faster than riding. Construction and maintenance problems, along with heavy snow and constant flooding meant that the trains were never on time, and wrecks were common. It got abandoned in 1927

And yes, the trail went through a shady area with lots of fertile soil for mushrooms. So many different ones and not one I recognised. Need some lessons from Kinsey, our guide in Yellowstone 😂
