29.01 Day 135 . . . Winter Walk

We woke to lovely sunshine bathing us through the bedroom window - the first sunshine we have seemed to have had for ages.
We rang the changes having croissants and jam for breakfast, not had these for a while either - as we had over indulged in the first weeks out here.
Next up I undertook some more intensive knife sharpening . . . three on the list this morning. To be fair as before they were all sharper than when I had started, but they are not slice paper from five yards sharp. Not sure if it me and my technique or the fact that the knives were so bloody blunt I am on a rescue mission. More YouTube to view and further attempts to follow.
In the meantime Tre had made a lasagne with mince as normal but also with lentils mixed in. A few years ago I would have passed on the whole lentil thing but I have to say I don’t mind them now. They are also a good way of bulking meals out when there is just the two of us and half of every meal we make seems to end up in the freezer for another day. The way this bulked up I thin we may be having two days of lasagne over the coming weeks.
FA Cup Sunday meant I got the chance to watch even more football while Tre pottered around, but the weather was too good to miss. So we stuck our boots on and headed out for a walk around the nearby lanes - some we had not walked before. We headed East out of our hamlet generally towards Les Alleuds.
The sun was still out and it was turning into a stunning late winter afternoon. After spotting a few men in vehicles I wished we had put hi-viz on, as the Chasse were obviously still about. I took comfort that Tre had her bright red walking jacket on, so I kept close to her :-).
We did see some deer in an adjacent field, who once having seen us vanished into the smallest bushes ever. How they vanished was amazing.
As we walked into the hamlet that is Les Alleuds, we were continually barked at by an Alsatian who was on the other side of a very long L shaped hedge. He followed us along its entire length, running up and down the other side of the hedge. Despite my desperate attempts to calm him down, he continued to bark even after we were well clear of the house and his garden fortress. I bet the neighbours were well pleased.
As we walked towards home we marvelled at the wind turbines again, set against the ever closer sunset. It was also about this point that I took a detour onto the farmers field to acquire some of his very rich, dark brown, freshly ploughed soil . . . I need some for some seeds back at the Gite. I had gone out prepared with a carrier bag and a car de-icer (makeshift pocket size spade) scraper to achieve this. Mission accomplished we headed for home. A lovely 2 mile walk to finish the day.
Home we sat to have the lasagne which was delishhhhh!! We both had second helpings !!
We also opened the one of the bottles of red we had purchased yesterday. Tre noticed it was a numbered bottle of ‘Les Ormes De Cambras - Merlot Pays D’Oc 2021’ Cuvée Réservée 091748. This little bottle had been €3 something and had been reduced to €1.79 . . . . It was blooming lovely - we’ve got another bottle of this!!
A lazy evening in front of the TV and we were off to bed . . . very full.Читать далее

28.01 Day 134 . . . Oh Deer, Oh Deer!

So for another day we both woke quite late and after a period of discussing the improving weather and life in general, we finally dragged ourselves out of bed to get showered and dressed.
After a late breakfast of porridge, I watched some very very old TV whilst Tre finished getting ready. The Big Match Revisited and World of Sport brought back some fond memories of growing up in Crawley, especially football pitches resembling a ploughed field rather than a lush green turf covered masterpiece.
About 2pm we hopped into Roxvanne, the injection warning light still popping up immediately on ignition. We took the back roads over to Sauze to go food shopping.
On route we saw the Chasse were out in force, passing one field that had a hi-viz wearing huntsman in each viewing stand - all looking into the adjacent wooded area. We always take note of which way they are facing due to reading articles about deaths caused by the chasse - to drivers passing by in vehicles. Stray bullets from high powered rifles don’t differentiate between humans and wild boar or deer.
We passed safely by and drove possibly another minute before in an adjacent field we saw five or six deer walking calmly across a ploughed field. If only the chasse had known 😂
Into Sauze and subsequently SuperU we stocked up on pellets for the burner in the Gite, together with food for the week. No unknown foods for us to investigate this week so we opted for new cheese - Tomme de Normandie.
On driving home using the road to nowhere rather than the back lanes, we saw even more deer, these standing right next to the main road - they obviously had heard the chasse were elsewhere.
At home the dreaded I loading of the pellets took place. I will be so pleased when we can get the pellets in the van anywhere near the front door of home - rather than a little stroll with them.
At home we had some of the cheese - which was lovely. If you asked Tre she would say it was a little fruity . . . She told me about five or six times 😂
Next up I decided to attempt to sharpen some of the knives we have in the kitchen. Last week in the UK I had acquired Teresa’s Dad’s very old bench stone - a double sided block with two grades of coarseness.
Now I’m not saying it was an outstanding success, but the knives I tried were definitely sharper than when I began. Every days a school day so next time it will be better.
During the afternoon we made a batter for some new recipe Yorkshire Puddings we had found - and put it in the fridge for an hour as instructed.
About 6.30 we set the Yorkshires off and running and subsequently had them with some chorizo sausages and salad . . . with a new untried salad dressing . . . all good!!
In between some FA Cup football, we watched Michael McIntyre, Ant & Dec and then Lethal Weapon 2 on the TV for the evening. We are so living the high life - exciting to the extreme. All joking apart it is lovely spending time with Tre in the evenings, despite it being winter like here, just chilling and chatting, with no work the next day to be worrying about.
If the house comes off, we will be heading into the summer and a whole new life will be opening up for us.
Can’t wait 😎Читать далее

27.01 Day 133 . . Another Day Slips By

The minute my eyes opened I was onto Youtube to check out how to use the Autel MaxiScan MS309 OBD2 Code Reader and Engine Fault Checker (ordered yesterday)which had been going over and over in my head whilst partly asleep. The issue with Roxvanne is on my mind almost constantly and will be until I resolve it. Satisfied I knew what I was gonna have to do - I sort of put it to bed until the bit of kit arrives first few days in Feb.
We were both then up - not too early and had brekkie.
I had been been putting off doing my business accounts for a couple of weeks and it had further slipped due to being back in the UK to sort Tre’s parents place. But today was now the day.
It always seems to take me so bloody long to sort the statements, complete the spreadsheet for my accountant and reconcile, before sending everything off to her. To be fair it always comes back super quick and I was then into paying my personal tax and vat together with accountant invoices.
Add to this some other admin Tre and I needed to sort, moving a google online account from the business ( easier said than done), cancelling one of my online photo galleries and the morning and early afternoon had slipped past in a flash.
We were going to go for a food shop but we decided to leave that another day.
Both of us I think were still knackered from the UK trip, the garage clearance and the drive back to France. The UK had been full on yet again.
It wasn’t long before we settled to watch a film and Tre snoozed off - apparently I am her new favourite cushion 🙄
During the late afternoon I had a chat on social with Glenn back in the UK, who was working but bored . . . His go to remedy is football quiz questions. I found a couple of complete anorak questions on the web and sent them to him. Within ten minutes he answered all of them, correctly and with added information. He does need to get out more 😂
Dinner was cobbled together from the cupboards emergency stash . . . and so ravioli it was.
Surprised to find FA Cup on the telly I settled to watch Man City v Arsenal, whilst Tre researched French car sales. The issue with Rox is obviously on her mind also.
Another nothing day done, mainly because we are running on empty after the UK trip. Tomorrow will be a better day.Читать далее

26.01 Day 132 . . . Nothing To See Here

Both of us woke at about 9.45am, pooped from the previous day’s 15hr door to door journey. Although Tre enjoyed the boat journey route both ways, I think it is a really long journey. Flying has got to be first choice, with the tunnel next . . . The downside is the distance to the tunnel - 2hrs further than Dieppe.
Anyhow once awake we had emails to send to our Notaire regarding the emails we had received from Beaux Villages Estate Agent and also some update on progress in the UK.
I also messaged Warren to get the details of the diagnostic tool I need to get. He came back immediately with it and so ordered up was a Autel MaxiScan MS309 OBD2 Code Reader and Engine Fault Checker - whatever that is!! I need to do some homework.
Hannah had also messaged as she was going back to the UK for a few days and needed to pop to see us before leaving.
We had a very weird brunch type breakfast, bits and pieces that no-one in their right mind would put together for a meal. We were tired and so that was our excuse . . . Anyway it was good.
Hannah then popped in as promised - with post, stoping for a chat as always. I also drained her of any info she had on mechanics and buying car parts here - Roxvanne may need a fix. She promised to email some details . . . and she never fails to deliver.
We had decided on the last knockings of the drive home last night that today was going to be a chill day, so we stuck to that and found a film to flop and watch for the afternoon.
The late afternoon and evening were very much the same, neither of us wanting to do anything very much - so it wasn’t long before the evening had gone and we were back in bed.
Not looking forward to tomorrow as it’s business accounts day!!

18.01-25.01 Day 124-131 . . Not France

18.01 124. Up at before 6am and out the door just before 7am - still completely dar here in France. Straight onto the N10 and then A10 northbound generally Dieppe bound, our first time trying the ferry. The weather was fab until just outside Rouen when it started to snow. By the time we hit Dieppe it was absolutely lashing down with rain. We were early and so sat at the port for what seemed like hours - well2.5hrs anyway before boarding. A four hour crossing, thankfully not rough and then we arrived in Newhaven at 2145hrs. Off and straight up the road to East Grinstead to Tre’s parents house. Inside, heating put on and straight to bed - we have some busy days ahead.
19.01 125. Up at 7am to be clearing ice from Roxvanne and also our Kia on the driveway. Both to Haywards Heath in Rox and the Kia. We dropped the Kia at the garage for the clutch to be replaced. Both then back to East Grinstead to go to estate agent then some shops for food and cleaning supplies. Home to Tre’s parents house. Tre made calls to pension companies while I sorted issues with IONOS. At lunch we took delivery of the skip. Start clearing garage but within an hour got a call to go collect the Kia which was finished. Both in Rox to Haywards Heath to collect the Kia. Then to Sainsburys for cardboard boxes for packing. Tre drives home to East Grinstead in Rox while I have to go back to garage to get the locking wheel nut for the Kia which hadn’t been replaced and then to Jewson’s for plastic sheets. I then finally drive back to East Grinstead - nearly out of fuel on route so detour for fuel. Home to Tre and start garage clear. 5.30pm finish and in for food. Shower and bed as up early to take Roxvanne for a service in morning.
20.01 126. Up at 7.30am to drop Rox to Warren for service. Walk home to Tre’s parents and continue sorting garage and house which continued all day. I shot out to get boxes from Robert Dyas. Warren at garage called to say Rox has an oil leak at turbo and needs new pipe - which means not ready now until Tuesday. So new plans re dropping car to mum and dads needed and devised - now go Sunday and get train home Monday . . . . From Birmingham. For dinner we went to see Munch in Tonridge for a KFC and ice cream parlour visit for pudding. Back home to bed.
21.01 127. Continued sorting the garage and house all day. Booked Easistore for some bits to store on Tuesday - bits we want from the garage sort. Working our plans around Roxvanne still being fixed and how to get to see everyone.
22.01 128. Up at 7.30am Load tour old TV into the Kia and drive to East Grinstead tip for opening at 9am. Drop TV and then to Haywards Heath to meet eldest Daniel for breakfast at 10am in the Orange Square. Caught up on loads of news including 204 Chanctonbury Road has been sold and the kids don’t live there anymore! Left Daniel at midday and drove to Mum and Dad’s in the Kia to give them the Kia. New plan involves no Roxvanne to drive home from Mum & Dad’s - we gonna use the train, as Rox still being fixed. Arrived about 5pm and took Dad out for a spin to get used to Kia. Back to Mum and Dad’s. Dinner and chatted until bed at 10pm - we’ve got another long day tomorrow.
23.01 129. Up at 7.30am. Try sort dDads bank account online - painful. Breakfast. Drove by Mum & Dad to Bloxwich North rail station. Took train to Birmingham Internation. Our intended first connection train was cancelled. An hour later finally took train to Euston. From Euston took tube to Victoria. At Victoria board displays all East Grinstead trains are cancelled due to a landslide. Decided to take train to three bridges as closest alternative. From Three Bridges a taxi to East Grinstead. Once indoors we had some pasta and watched Vera on iPad. Bed.
24.01 130. Up at 7am to get a taxi which collects at 8.15am to Easistore in order to collect a van and take out (hire) a unit. Drive to the van to East Grinstead to load van of Garage keeps. Then drive to Easistore and unload van into store. Same taxi driver called to drive us to East Grinstead. Lunch. All completed at the house and garage we have iPad for hour and snooze for hour. Call and find Rox fixed so walk to garage to collect Rox. Drive home shower and then into East Grinstead town centre to meet Mary & Paul and all have a curry at Monsoon. Im given lovely birthday presents and we have Pinau to give to Mary & Paul. Drive home at 11pm and straight to bed as up early . . . . again!!
25.01 131. Up at 6.30am and drive in Rox to Newhaven Ferry Port having dropped bottle of coins at British Heart Foundation. Sat at Newhaven doing Penguin notes and then realised I’m on a wifi that I’d not requested. Checked to see what wifi connection and on GOV Wifi as per Manston. UK Gov will be after me 😂😳
While on the ferry crossing Kate (Estate Agent) emailed to ensure 31st March for Compromis de Vente was ok. Forward to Christophe our UK Notaire.
Hit Dieppe at 4pm and were very first vehicle off the boat - result.
Problem with van when hit Rouen - warning lights on. Call to Warren who to his credit answered and gave advice despite the time!!
A few hours into drive Tre said she could drive some of the journey and more than an hour. After driving just over the hour and the discussion about driving an extended period she said maybe we should stop as ‘she couldn’t really see very well in the dark’ . . . . we stopped at the very next services - which couldn’t come fast enough 🙄😳😬
Got home to Chaignepain at 2330hrs France time so 15rs door to door.
On walking through the door Tre received an email to say grant of probate had been received - Perfect timing!Читать далее

17.01 Day 123 . . . The Long Wait

Rubbish start to the day with some aggro back in the UK that needed sorting, this stuff is so negative.
To brighten my mood I decided to go and tidy the van and inflate tyres etc ready for our imminent return to the UK. Good idea but when the large battery unit I have for the van turned out to be flat fair to say my mood darkened. So that unit went inside to be charged . . . oh and then it doesn’t like being charged by the French power supply . . . FFS.
Anyhow Tre had her first hairdressing appointment today and due to issues with phones I didn’t want her to go on her own, so we agreed I would take her and wait somewhere . . . probably in a bar nearby. She guessed she might be 2 hours in the barnet shop.
So at about 2pm I dropped Tre off in Sauze at the salon and I ventured onto SuperU primarily to get some gifts to take back to the UK for some friends (yes we have some).
I decided to check out foot pumps in store . . . 39€, bit steep I thought. So other gifts acquired I left SuperU to go to Bricomon across the road. Everything else to do with cars available, but no foot pumps. New idea . . . drive to an air line somewhere. As I left Bricomon unbelievably, I saw a car wash and airline behind SuperU, something Id not discovered before. So having collected Rox we parked up on the airline . . . . after five minutes of button pressing it was obviously
Not Blood Working!!
Anyhow 39€ less well off I left SuperU again, this time with a foot pump.
I drove to a car park in Sauze and spent the next hour sorting tyres and other bits and pieces within Roxvanne. All sorted and fully inflated tyres I drove and parked up waiting for Tre.
I sat happily in Rox, reading articles on my phone, playing the occasional game and also having a little nap. I was only disturbed at one point when a staff member from the hairdressers came out to tell me they were still way off finishing with Tre.
Just before 6pm Tre appeared at Rox and climbed in, apologising for the 4 hour wait . . . I really hadn’t noticed, I had quite enjoyed my little quiet time.
From Sauze we drove to check on the house at Chenay. Due to the near constant rain over the past days there had been some localised flooding. On arrival all was good and the general area also seemed fine, which was reassuring for us.
Back at home we had dinner and then packed for our trip in the morning - off back to the other place as we affectionally call it. A little TV and an early night - we are up early again tomorrow.

16.01 Day 122 . . . It’s My Birthday !!

It’s my Birthday, It’s my Birthday! - So we didn’t hang around for once, as I wanted as much attention as possible in this 24hrs - so we got up and ready relatively quickly. Cards opened and placed in pride of place, just awaiting the mega present to arrive later 😂
We had decided yesterday to head to Confolens and later the Reclamation yard. We were on the road about 11am, travelling east across to Sauze Vaussais, to Civray, dropping down and skirting Charroux, then onto Pressac before finally onto Confolens. The weather which hadn’t been brilliant on waking had brightened as we got towards Confolens. We stopped just outside in a small lay-by just before heading into the town and had a wander over the main bridge - Pont Medieval, Rue Antoine Babaud Lacroze.
Located in the north-east of the Charente, at the confluence of Vienne and Goire, Confolens, with its dungeon, its Romanesque churches and the remains of its fortifications, testifies to the role it had in the Middle Ages. Confolens enjoyed prosperity due to the activity of its tanneries. On both sides of the Pont Vieux, about sixty half-timbered houses and numerous private mansions attest to this period. In the 19th century, it became sub-prefecture, it occupies administrative and commercial functions, which modifies its urban physiognomy. Since 1958, its festival of Arts and Traditions of the World attracts tens of thousands every year in the first fortnight of August. In 1895, Auguste Redon created a cake of almond paste called Kroumirs, from local specialty.
We walked back to Rox and parked up in town and then found our way into a patisserie for baguette and quiche. After another stroll we headed back to Rox. On the way out of town we stopped at a roadside small brocante, which transpired to be full of old tatt. I’d seen better stuff at local tip.
We ventured on heading towards The Reclamation Yard, which we had briefly visited a couple of days ago. Our journey lasting all of five minutes we arrived. We spent over an hour walking the numerous floors of just about everything you could want to find. It is very much a glorified house clearance venue, but bloody hell has it got some quantity of clearance items. There is an entire floor dedicated to doors of every shape, size and design and a basement full of sinks, baths and toilets, not to mention a full wood yard. So if you need an item for a quick renovation and not wanting to spend big bucks - this is defo worth a visit. We will be back without a doubt.
Heads swirling with ideas we hopped back into Rox with Tre having another drive. We were chased all the way home by the rain, we could see it behind us and we had the occasional shower - but we continued heading into the brighter skies.
Back at home Tre and I played with the Ninja again, this time preparing and air frying pastries full of brie, bacon and a touch of tomato puree - lovely!!
A couple of glasses of our now favourite Rose - Roche Mazet, a little TV and I’d had quite a lovely day . . . not such a bad first birthday in FranceЧитать далее

15.01 Day 121 . . . Nipples

Having made an earlier promise to help when possible - and having opened our eyes at 9am dragging myself and Tre out of bed at 10am, we joined Hannah our lovely landlady outside at 1015am to help her with a log delivery she had received the day before. The remaining mountain of logs actually reduced quite quickly with the three of us loading two carts and taking them to Hannahs stores. After about four runs back and forth with both wagons, the mountain had vanished. Both of us had really enjoyed being outside in the sunshine doing some manual labour . . . it was still particularly fresh temperature wise!
We finished up about 1130-midday and returned inside having said our goodbyes to Hannah. Tre cracked on with some more washing while I took a leisurely read of some social media.
A short while later Tre started on the evening meal prep and I shot upstairs to grab a shower. I hadn’t even got into my birthday suit before I heard a scream from downstairs . . . . “Andy can you come down quickly - the pork has got nipples!”
Giggling to myself I returned downstairs to find Tre standing as far as she could away from the piece of pork on the kitchen counter, as if it was about to launch and attack her. After a quick examination I concurred - yep the joint had nipples . . . teats. Not something you often see in the UK on a Sainsburys joint. With the aid of a very dull knife I attempted (hacked) at the joint to remove the offending articles. Once removed Tre returned across the room to continue her prep while I scurried upstairs for my happy birthday shower.
The afternoon weather took a turn for the worse and the rain started. We settled in for a film on the sofa.
Evening meal time arrived and the pork belly arrived (minus bits), gloriously lovely and cheesy cauliflower cheese with smashed potatoes, smuvvvered in garlic.
Rubbish TV on the sofa was the order of the evening and a not too late bed time . . . . tomorrow is a big day!!Читать далее

14.01 Day 120 . . . Reclamation Yard

I'm still breathing, I'm still breathing
I'm still breathing, I'm still breathing
I'm alive . . . .
. . . So says Sia in her song ‘Alive’ and fortunately despite the issue with the fridge yesterday morning so were we, last nights chicken/bacon/sausage meat masterpiece hadn’t done us any harm.
As Tre has sorted to collect the pottery last night we decided to leave at about 11am and make our way towards Le Dorât. So having got ourselves sorted and breakfasted we made tracks, picking up fuel at Sauze on route.
We’d not been this far east so once we passed Civray and Charroux we were pretty much in unchartered territory.
The weather again had been pants all morning and continued during our drive east. Not long after Charroux I noticed a large artic lorry was behind me and when I say behind me - I mean by about two feet. For mile after mile he sat right on the backside of Roxvanne simply because I was sticking to the speed limits. So two can play that game and so I purposely slowed down on the approach to hills, simply to make him struggle and give me some space as we ascended. After five minutes or so he would have caught me up and so I waited to the next hill and played the same game. This went on for miles!
At about 1230 Tre messaged the guy to ensure the pottery was going to be at Le Dorât. - he replied that Le Dorât wasn’t open on a Saturday afternoon . . . Not what he had said last night. So after a little bit of heated exchange in Rox we decided to drive to their other store about another half an hour further - to La Souterraine.
Before we got to the store in La Souterrain we stopped for a coffee and a quiche in the town centre. La Souterraine seemed quite a a nice town with a lot of shops, which may make us drop back here at some point for a further investigation.
After coffee we drove to the store ‘Bonkers’ and entered. We were shown the bowl and jug that Tre has asked for to be reserved, which was lovely. Put on the counter for payment, we then had a further look around the rest of the store - sort of an antique/second hand affair. Half hour later we decided there was nothing more for us to grab and so we paid up for the bowl and jug and made tracks.
Back at Rox we made a quick decision to drive back to Confolens and to a place I’d seen called The Reclamation Yard. According to the sat nav we would get there with under 30 minutes before closing time.
Still driving through torrential rain we headed back west to Confolens. Confolens is one of the towns we still want to visit as it is known to be quite picturesque with a river running through it.
The yard was outside of Confolens at 64 Ansac-sur-Vienne, as we arrived with it still pouring with rain. We had 25 minutes to rush around.
As we entered the initial open yard the owner appeared. We apologised for being so late and could we have a quick 10 minutes to see roughly what he had - so we could come back another time better informed. He was cool and on realising we will probably be wanting a lot from him when and if the house sale goes through - he was more than happy for us to stay as long as we wanted. The place was huge with about four to five large warehouses some with four floors and basements. It had everything from beds to chandeliers, all sorts of cut timber to huge pieces of cut bark, machinery to concrete lintels and pretty much everything in between. We realised we were gonna need ages to investigate this place and so after about 15 minutes we found the owner again, informed him we would be back Monday and wished him a good evening.
The place was a real goldmine of everything we might want, we both drove home talking about the small amount of bits we had actually seen. We hadn’t even done outside due to the crap weather.
Within an hour we were back at our place, still raining we ran for the Gite and the dry.
We were both not really hungry and elected that cheese and biscuits, some chorizo and a bottle of red from the ‘off licence’. (Hannah’s store room) was all that was needed.
We spent the now evening, still listening to the rain, sorting some issues back in the UK and enjoying our comfort dinner whilst watching the final episodes of The Killing.
Tomorrow if it’s not raining we have promised to help Hannah with moving some logs that have been delivered. We don’t need them, but she really needs some help. So fingers crossed it’s lashing down all day tomorrow 😂Читать далее

13.01 Day 119 . . Will We Make Tomorrow

I woke fairly early as Cinderella slept on. Once finally awake, Tre went down to make us both tea and then shouted up to me that the fridge had been slightly open all night. The bloody thing has a habit of not closing properly . . . Well it doesn’t shut if you don’t make sure it’s shut. So we were a bit concerned about what was in there - particularly the expensive chicken thing we had purchased at Angoulême the day before. We decided it would get cooked that evening 🫣
Once up I needed to book some car hire which seemed to take forever due to the wifi, then we booked further hotels for when my mum and dad come over. Then we had a message session with Loz re booking we needed to make with her and Pete for February. Loz was then off and running to book those. Then spoke with my mum re the bits I had booked and some questions my dad had raised - that conversation then moved onto us getting rid of the Kia back in the UK and my mum and dad then deciding they might want it due to issues with their car. So after another mega session of internet trawling, calls and messages I then remembered I needed to move Roxvanne as Hannah had a wood delivery arriving tomorrow. Only issue was Tre and I wanted to unload some more stuff from Rox, so she was empty for our IK trip on Wednesday.
So at about 1pm fortunately just before the rain started, Tre and I completed a couple of runs each back and forth to Rox to unload some boxes. That done I moved the Rox to the other parking spot this keeping Hannah happy.
Once the boxes were put away Tre and I settled down to a binge session on iPlayer of The Killing. We wanted to finish this before going back to the UK. I could then free up the iPad downloads ready for some new downloads when we arrive in Blighty. Seemed we made the right call as yet again it was hammering it down outside. The rain has been non stop for days - or so it seems.
Tre put the now possibly dodgy chicken thing in and we sat to have that about an hour later.
Should there be no further output from me on Penguins - it will be due to getting food poisoning from the chicken!! 🤢🤢
See if I’m still here tomorrow.
Anyhow the evening passed by, we finished The Killing series 2 - so can now move onto series 3 once back from the UK.
We do obviously keep an eye on UK news but all it seems to be is talk of the various strikes - nothing else seems to be news!
I think we need to spend a bit more time trying to understand French news channels, to see what’s going on and most importantly improve my French.
Hope to see you all tomorrow - chicken allowing!Читать далее

12.01 Day 118 . . . Angoulême

The alarm sounded at 4.45 and after a snooze we were all up at 5am and getting ready. We bundled into Roxvanne at 5.40am and set off - Bordeaux bound . . . Yet again.
Stopping only briefly at SuperU in Sauze for fuel, we found ourselves on the N10 heading south. Apart from some traffic on the approach to Bordeaux itself and the almost constant rain the journey was as painless as ever.
We rolled in and parked at Merignac Airport at about 8.30am. It took only minutes to walk into the terminal and see Did’s off through security, his visit seeming really short and sweet. We have definitely got this airport run off to a fine art now.
Tre and I had decided to stop at Angoulême on the way home. We had not been there since one of our very first visits to France house seeking.
Angoulême is quite a large town and has it’s centre above the main town, up on a hill top, which gives views across the surrounding area.
By about 1030am we were parking - we’ve not found a car park on either visit, so street parking has to be found. After a hassle with the parking app we finally walked towards the centre.
We walked up to to a small patisserie passing a small church Eglise Saint Andre in route. The patisserie, Julien Galon we think we visited last time we were here. We shared a baguette with a couple of coffees and Tre ordered a fruit cup cake. Tre very kindly shared some of the cupcake which was bloody delicious and I wished I’d ordered one as well. It had a crumble too just like on an apple crumble - in hindsight we should have bought another two to take away with us.
We walked from there towards the market, passing the Mairie’s/Town Hall building which is truly stunning.
Angoulême Town Hall and Mairie (Hôtel de ville Angoulême) . . . The Château d'Angoulême was a castle in the town. The only remaining parts are the keep of Lusignan and the tower of Valois, which are part of the Town Hall of Angoulême, together with a construction of the 19th century.
The rocky outcrop on which Angoulême sits, which dominates the river Charente and the Anguienne has been a strategical position for a long time. The first fortress on this site was built at the end of the Roman Empire. A rampart protecting a 27 hectare area has been maintained until the 13th century. The medieval castle was founded in around 886 by Count Alduin.
From the 10th to the 13th century, the Counts of Angoulême, the Taillifer then the Lusignan, strengthened the fortifications of the town, and enlarged them to include the Saint-Martial quarter.
Important additions to the castle were undertaken by Hugh X of Lusignan in 1226. In 1308, after the death of Guy de Lusignan, the county of Angoulême returned to the French Crown. It was then given to Louis d'Orléans in 1394, and then fell by inheritance to his son Jean de Valois, grandfather of Marguerite d'Angoulême and Francis I.
The duke of Épernon, governor of Angoumois, received Marie de' Medici when she escaped in 1619. After, the castle became the residence of the governors.
In 1840, the town bought the castle to house the Town Hall. The mayor, Paul Joseph Normand de la Tranchade, commissioned the architect Paul Abadie to develop the project, who dismantled a portion of the medieval buildings. The keep and a tower were preserved thanks to the pressure of the Archaeological and Historical Society of Charente.
We found our way to the indoor market which we had also visited previously. As always there were foods to be discovered that we had not previously seen. Today was no exception - as I, to Tre’s dismay selected a small piece of Irish Guinness Cheese to try later at home. We also purchased from one of the butchers, what we think is sausage meat or similar wrapped in ham or bacon, which is again then wrapped in chicken - all then hand tied. The butcher had been making these as we passed which is why it caught our attention. A little shocked at the price when we paid, but we want to keep trying new local dishes.
From the market we walked to the Cathedral - which Tre wanted to visit.
Angoulême Cathedral - Cathédrale Saint-Pierre d'Angoulême sits proudly at 1 Pl. Saint-Pierre, with views out over the surrounding area.
Angoulême Cathedral - Cathédrale Saint-Pierre d'Angoulême is a Roman Catholic church. The cathedral is in the Romanesque architectural and sculptural tradition, and is the seat of the Bishop of Angoulême.
A first cathedral was built on the site of a primitive, pre-Christian sanctuary, in the 4th century. The edifice was destroyed when the town was taken by Clovis after the Battle of Vouillé (507). Another cathedral was consecrated in 560, but this was also set on fire, maybe by the Vikings/Normans some two centuries later.
A third cathedral was then constructed under bishop Grimoard, abbot of Saint-Pierre de Brantôme. The new church was consecrated in 1017. However, at the beginning of the 12th century the citizens started to consider it too small for to the wealth of the county. The designer was bishop Gerard II, one of the most important French figures of the time, who was a professor, Papal legate for four popes and also a notable artist. Works began about 1110 and finished in 1128.
The church's original appearance was modified in the following centuries. One of the bell towers, for example, was destroyed during the Wars of Religion of the 16th century. Further alterations were made during the restorations by Paul Abadie in 1866-1885, including the addition of the two towers with conical tops, but the façade remains mostly medieval.
I never cease to be amazed by the way in which these buildings were constructed, taking into account the period in which they were built and the tools to hand at that time. Large domes always amaze me - simply due to the shape, height and detail - these here being tiled completely.
After leaving the Cathedral we walked Angoulême for a while before deciding to make tracks for home. Both of us a little jaded due to the early start this morning.
The weather turned for the worse on the way home and the rain started . . . Again.
Once home we did a few chores and then sat to try the Guinness cheese which remarkably was actually quite good. It almost tasted as if there was marmite within in - guessing just the malt taste coming through.
The evening passed by, both of us happy not to have a late night.
Tomorrow we need to book even more things, car hire and further hotels, also clear some bits from Roxvanne before we travel to the UK next week.Читать далее

11.01 Day 117 . . . Lunch At Voyageurs

A slow, slow morning getting ourselves up and ready - primarily Did’s obviously. Its weird - when people are here Tre and I wanna get up and get going with them, when actually they just want to chill. When there is no-one here Tre and I struggle to get up.
Anyhow we had a lunch booked at Hôtel Des Voyageurs in Chef Boutonne for 1230pm - so there was no rush.
We arrived in Chef at midday and had a quick spin round the shops before heading for lunch. Tre very obviously kicked me out of the only shop in Chef B that sells birthday cards . . . I wonder why?
In Voyageurs we were greeted by the ever pleasant staff and seated in the rear restaurant, which was already busy with other general visitors, workmen in overalls and office staff, obviously from nearby.
We opted for the plat du jour - the formula three course - all three of us light of any breakfast.
First course was the cold meats, cheeses and salad bar, as much as you wanted. For main course Did’s and I had pork steaks in mustard with chips and salad, while Tre had a homemade minced meat burger . . . not exactly what she was expecting and I think she would have opted for the pork if she had known. I did offer a swap but she turned me down. Tre and Did’s then had creme caramel for pudding whist I had ‘the island that floats’ a very light meringue that sits in a bowl of cold creme anglaise. The meringue melts in your mouth almost immediately.
Tre had offered up to drive, so I encouraged Did’s up for the strong Leffe Blonde at 6 point something percent . . . I was slightly amused when he said he wanted a second. That said he did drink it - although confessed he did then feel quite pickled.
After coffee and chocolates we paid and left - completely full.
As Tre was driving she got to decide where we were going and then sprung upon me the idea of going to look at cars at a nearby garage. So off we set. Literally 50 yrds around the corner we came across a broken down car in the middle of the road - and by that I mean it’s wheel although still attached, was hanging off at a 45 degree angle. Tre kicked Did’s and I out of Rox to go help push the car off the road. The owners transpired to be English as well and to the best of my attempts I could not shift the wheel into any form of position that we could push the car. By now half the street seemed to have appeared and were all helping, one French guy took over the owners phone to speak to his Insurance company on his behalf. After about 20 mins it was obvious nothing was going to happen until a tow truck appeared - which was now on route, so we left them in the same state pretty much that we had found them. They were grateful for our efforts.
We then drove to Bouin to look at some cars - but there was nothing too exciting and so we didn’t stay long.
We then took the back roads via a few villages towards home, passing through to Montjean where we stopped to buy Did’s a Pine cake. Much to his relief the patisserie had none in stock. We did get into conversation with an old guy who lived in Montjean. He was admiring a new statue that had been placed in the centre of the village. Apparently an elderly gentleman had recently lost his wife and commissioned a statue of her to be placed in the centre of the village. To be fair if the statue was anything like her at the time of her death - she had aged particularly well . . . which was why the old guy was admiring the statue so keenly.
We then drove home via Sauze Vassais and through Melleran.
We skipped dinner for the evening as we were all so stuffed from lunch at Voyageurs, simply chilling and chatting. We weren’t too late going to bed as Did’s is off home in the morning and we have a very early start.
So not looking forward to that alarm !!Читать далее

10.01 Day 116 . . . Wet, Windy & Foul

We’d decided to get up and go to Niort for the morning. The market was due to be on - but as it was a Tuesday we weren’t sure to what extent - Did’s had not been there!
The morning was could - we had woken to rain and it was still lightly falling as we jumped into Roxvanne at 9.30am.
The drive to Niort was wet, misty and grey and on arrival it had not changed. We first visited the market - which as we guessed it might be, was very short on stalls, we’d never seen it this quiet.
We hopped into our usual coffee shop ‘Munch’s Crush’ and had hot chocolates.
We decided due to the ever worsening weather that walking around the shops was going to be painful and so elected to go to Decathlon so Did’s could get some bits.
Back into Rox - we headed to Decathlon. Inside I managed to find another fleece type top for me, Tre and Did’s were more happy playing a very poor game of table tennis on the shop display table. 🙄
From Decathlon we drove to the retail park nearby and visited a few of the shops, grabbing a few bits and pieces as we went. Tre also eyed up one of her top ten purchases for when we get a place here - it has to be in pink apparently.
Lunch beckoned and so we hit the nearby patisserie and grabbed some quiche (chorizo quiche here is to die for).
We then drove to what turned out to be the wrong store. A 30 minute drive to Centrakor, at Azay le Brulé turned out to be a total waste of time . . . it wasn’t what we had expected at all. We had it turned out spelt the shop name incorrectly on our google maps search - hence our result. After a very quick five minutes around a very small store we headed for home. Fortunately the error in finding Centrakor, had at least taken us in the right direction home.
We received an email from the estate agent re the house, as always it was changing something we had thought was already agreed - so we need to sort that tomorrow 😡
We stopped in Sauze briefly so Teresa could pop in the now open hairdressers to make and appointment - only to find our neighbours sitting in there, Jackie having her nails done!! For a big country we seem to constantly bumping into people we know wherever we go! Anyway - appointment now made, so next Tuesday will see the skills of the French hairdressers I. Taming Tre’s locks.
Back to home, we all just chilled, before making even more bookings for flights and sailings, car parking and hotels. We seem to be doing this constantly at the moment 😂. Tre made dinner a little later - my favourite merguez sausages. For pudding we had a cake Tre and I had picked up on Saturday. Tre thought it was something to do with 3 Kings day - which meant nothing to me. However after nearly cracking my tooth on an enamel object within the cake, which had a picture of a ‘pharoah’ depicted on it we had to do a little research.
On January 6th, people across France celebrate Epiphany day by eating “une galette des Rois” King cake.
L’Épiphanie sometimes referred to as “La fête des Rois” three king’s day or “le Jour des Rois” Kings day, is celebrated on January 6th, exactly 12 days after December 25th.
This religious celebration marks the time when the three wise men or Magi “Les Trois Mages” visited baby Jesus in Bethlehem bearing gifts and to worship Jesus after they saw a star in the East which they recognized as a sign that a king was born— a messiah and God. It’s also the day when John the Baptist baptized baby Jesus in the River Jordan
Hidden in each king cake is a small figurine, called a fève (bean) which is baked right into the king cake. (Originally an actual bean was put in king cakes. Around the 1870s, it was replaced by porcelain figurines and more recently sometimes by plastic toys.)
The person who gets the slice of king cake containing the fève, gets to wear the paper crown which is always included with a King cake purchased at grocery stores and French bakeries in France. Tre had unfortunately found the paper crown within the packaging and thrown it away, so I missed out on that award.
We finished off with an evening of TV - and the weather was still grotty outside.
Hopefully tomorrow will be a better day for Did’s - we have lunch booked out.

09.01 Day 115 . . . Chenay With Did’s

After the nightmare we had trying to call HMRC the other day we set the alarm so we could wake and call them as soon as they started taking calls.
Tre finally managed to get through to a young lady who although very nice to deal with, was not entirely on it when it came to understanding the problem. Anyhow after about 20 minutes the issue seemed to be resolved.
Next up was more admin, whilst Did’s slept peacefully upstairs. I spoke to my mum and dad re their impending visit, booked their flights both ways, mine to the UK the day before they travelled and mine to travel with them here. We then booked hotels at Gatwick and looked into ones for the night before they returned to the UK in Bordeaux.
Then spoke to Lauren re her and Pete’s arrival in a couple of weeks, confirmed the dates of everything we were doing and looked into accommodation in Toulouse and Marseille - Loz said she book these up.
Finally Did’s awoke from his slumbers and after some food we took him to see the house at Chenay. The weather was thankfully fine and we took even more photos of the wind turbines near to Chenay. The house looked cold as before - simply due to no-one living in it, that everything was wet from days of on and off rain and just waiting to be loved.
From Chenay we drove to Sauze so that Tre could pop in the hairdressers and book herself an appointment. She wanted to go in rather than call, just so the hairdresser could have sight of what she was going to have to contend with. Chez André’s had been good during lock down, but now was the time for an overhaul.
From Sauze we drove to Chef Boutonne for a hot chocolate in Voyagers - our favourite little cafe/bar/restaurant/hotel, but decided to have a late and still available Christmas flavour Grimbergen instead . . . Tre stayed on the hot chocolate.
As Did’s had had such an exhausting day he opted for a trip back to ours for chilling and food.
So as the light faded to evening we sat down for huge pieces of pork belly with smashed garlic potatoes (again 😋).
More catching up with life in the UK for Did’s was the main topic of conversation before Did’s elected that horizontal on his bed with his iPad was what was called for.
Tre and I finished the evening with a glass of pinau and some more rubbish telly before hopping into bed.Читать далее

08.01 Day 114 . . . Did’s Arrives

At 2am I was woken by the sound of torrential rain, you could almost feel the vibration of it hitting the building and especially the windows. I suddenly had a panic on about the velux windows in the bathroom and one of the bedrooms and so jumped out of bed to go check on both. The one in the bedroom window was slightly wet on the seal but the other was fine. Panic averted I returned to bed but then couldn’t sleep.
At 9am we were both awake, I felt like I hadn’t slept at all and Teresa said she hadn’t had a good nights sleep either . . . the last few nights have seemed ok 😂
Teresa had a message on her phone from our new Insurance company warning us of an impending storm in the early hours of the night to come, advising of how to minimise damage . . . not often insurance companies are ahead of the game.
We did our usual stop to grab fuel at SuperU Sauze before getting on the N10 south to collect Did’s. We seem to spend our life on this road at the moment. With one quick comfort stop on the way we arrived at Bordeaux to see Did’s flight was on time and watch it land.
It wasn’t long before Did’s was suitably embarrassed in front of the other people waiting in the arrivals hall - by his mums huge hug! Still red faced Dids walked with us to Roxvanne - his first visit to see us since September when we arrived.
Once in Rox we headed north back up the A10 and I was glad to hear one of Did’s first questions to Tre being, would we be home in time to watch Chelsea v Man City. I knew at that point I was safe for another afternoon of football on the box 😂
With only the one stop on the way home, we were back indoors, pellet burner on and beer in hand ready for kick off.
The weather for the entire journey home had been grey misty and wet, Did’s had seen hardly anything on the journey. This evening, the weather had not changed and we all three hunkered down for the evening, catching up on Did’s news.
The evening slipped by and we retired to our beds . . . Did’s experiencing his first head clatter of the the room beam while climbing into bed 😂Читать далее

07.01 Day 113 . . . Scratchings!

So I woke at about 8am to a bedroom glowing red. I dashed to the window to see a beautiful morning sunrise. The photos just didn’t do it justice.
As is the norm for the Princess now, she woke at just gone 9.45am . . . Which to be fair was slightly earlier than previous days.
We scuttled downstairs to grab some breakfast and had a look at Teresa’s laptop at the same time - her emails weren’t arriving, although they were on her phone. We decided I needed longer to look at it later.
After breakfast we drove to SuperU at Melle to get supplies for the arrival of Dids tomorrow.
Whilst shopping we heard a very recognisable Newcastle accent shout to us and turned to find Gilly and Paul behind us. We then spent the best part of 3/4hr chatting about what had been going on since our last catch up.
Pork was the big offer in SuperU for the day, pigs heads and pigs trotters included in the fridges. We grabbed two massive pieces of pork belly which would probably do us about 4 meals, I also snaffled and hid some pork rind into the trolley so I could make some home made pork scratchings in the air fryer when home.
After the shop we headed home - it was raining!!
Once home I spent about an hour fiddling with the settings on Tre’s laptop, finally getting the accounts to refresh and her emails flowing in again. I think the laptop needs an update but we daren’t do that on the wifi we have at ours currently.
All working Tre was able to book Did’s in for his flight out to us the following day. We also got an update from Kate that she had got some Dr Martens, along the same line as Tre’s . . . But in floral. The Dr Marten club has commenced.
I then set about scoring and salting some pork rind before popping it in the air fryer.
Hey presto 15minutes later we had lovely (and warm) pork scratchings.
So the evening was then prepped for an episode of The Killing followed by a little bit of footy - Liverpool v Wolves . . . beer and pork scratchings.
Some evenings are simple and perfect.Читать далее

06.01 Day 112 . . . Government Gateway

I think France has broken Teresa!
Her internal clock has just stopped working - well the waking up part has at least. This morning I wrote yesterdays penguin, listened to a live album I’d not heard before, edited an image and put up an Instagram post, checked Twitter and Facebook thoroughly, watched a couple of YouTube tutorials and sent a few messages - all before Dozey decided to open her eyes. She didn’t wake up until 10am . . . again!!
Anyhow, following our now mid morning breakfast routine, we needed to update some details on the UK Government Gateway - nothing too difficult or so we thought. It was all to do with Teresa’s account and so she duly logged in on my laptop, as to make the morning a little more problematic - her laptop was double keying letters and so couldn’t log in with a password! So while she did that I fiddled with resetting her laptop. After about half an hour I asked why she was taking so long sorting the little task on the Gateway. So together we spent another hour half an hour trying to input details we knew were correct but the system said we’re not. Really frustrating. So we finally opted to call them - knowing what was to come! After 45 mins of waiting and listening to a recorded message we gave up and decided to try first thing Monday . . . If Teresa can wake up. Oh and the broken laptop is now ok 😎
As an aside to all of this I saw that sad news of the passing of Gianluca Vialli - a brilliant footballer and manager, a legend at Chelsea and a lovely real gentleman as well. 58yrs - no time at all.
Tre and I got ready and set out in Roxvanne, Sauze being our destination. Parked up we sought out the hairdressers that Tre wanted to visit - closed for Christmas and most of January it declared on the door.
So we had a walk around a little of the village we had not walked before, we found the Mairie’s office, which was closed as were most of the other shops and businesses. I’m not sure France opens in January.
So after grabbing a couple of items of food from the one shop that is always open we drove to the lawnmower showroom. The mechanic was there but no one to assist with information on sales of new or second hand machines - we’ll have to come back. We then decided to visit Bricodom the hardware store. We’ve avoided all of these so far as I til we have a home permanently it’s not worthwhile - but today we broke that rule, just to see what lay inside. Well, in all honestly pretty much what we expected but quite a bit more as well. I think Tre’s eyes would have glazed over again had I spent any more time in the air compressor, electrical tools and other boys gadget section.
Out of Bricodom (now known as Brit Condom) we drove to the lake and recreational park we had heard of which is just north of Sauze. The park wasn’t as big as we thought it would be, but had a decent size lake to walk around or fish, a crazy golf course, a number of BBQ’s for use when visiting and generally quite a nice place to visit - more so when the sun is out on a lovely warm day.
We assumed we could get to the house at Chenay using the backroads and so we set off. At first the backroads were decent backroads, I then decided to go off road and along farm tracks - which to be fair did bring us out right near the Chenay house, but also has now made Rox a very dirty brown colour 🙁.
We drove past the house without really stopping, just a slow drive past and then onto Mairé-Levescault the closest village - for a drive around. It’s not the biggest village to be fair and so it didn’t take us long to drift around the main roads and then start heading home.
Once home and the fire put on we both flopped onto the sofa with thoughts of what to do this evening. Those thoughts didn’t really amount to much and as both of us were not too hungry we lapsed into a night of cheese and biscuits, crisps, nibbles, pinau and beer - accompanied by rubbish re-runs of 80’s telly and a live FA Cup game to finish the evening. By the time the game had finished it was gone bedtime for us. Tre was already in bed by the end of the game - possibly as she had got up so early 🤔
What a hectic day!!

05.01 Day 111 . . . Losing Time

This was a day that really didn’t amount to too much - just one of those days that drifts past. The weather all day was sort of . . . Well . . . . Urghhh!
We had got up and had breakfast. We had intended going for a long walk but the weather was just really depressing so we decided to leave the decision to later.
I started on some Penguin catch up, I always make notes but sometimes don’t get the time to do full write ups. Tre was busy with some more washing and ironing from our week away and lots of other jobs around the place.
I messaged the stand in Landlady and Landlord (Hannah is still on her hollibob’s) to ask for an outside broom which was duly delivered about fifteen minutes later. As a result the patio got a well deserved leaf deep clean, we had meant to do this before we went away for New Year. That done and whilst in clean mode I hit the pellet burner which was stripped down and cleaned out.
So back to some Penguins!
Tre and I settled in to watch a couple of episodes on Netflix having decided the walk in the afternoon was not gonna happen due to the weather.
Those done, Teresa smashed out another top dinner, which we had whilst discussing some news from the UK. We have a daily routine at the moment of pinching one another - just to remind ourselves how lucky we are at the moment to have this experience.
A bit of TV and the evening was gone.
It’s very easy to lose days here - must try harder!

04.01 Day 110 . . . The Leak

Another late wake - well for Teresa anyway, I was awake at 7.30am but dozey didn’t open her eyes until 9.45am. I think the last few days of late nights has caught up with Princess 😂
Anyhow after getting up, we cracked on with all the stuff that needed doing - day’s away are lovely but there is always a price to pay. As a result Tre made numerous trips back and forth to the washing machine, we took all of the Christmas decorations down and packed them away safely, sorted a few bank related things including paying our car loan off early - which we’ve been angling to do for a while.
I decided to catch up with a few of these penguin posts an it was at this point that Tre discovered water on the floor, near to the outer wall in the lounge. We have never had a leak here before despite some heavy rain sessions. I could see it was wet near to a ceiling beam, but none of the ceiling was wet. As it was raining I guessed it was penetrating from outside. I had a quick check outside but as I mentioned - it was raining, so had no hope of seeing where it was coming in from. We decided not to bother Hannah the landlady who was on her hollibob’s in the UK and also not to bother the temporary guardians of the estate Lorna and Alan. We would wipe up the wet and see how much more came in. About 30 minutes later Tre told me she had solved the leak mystery. It would appear one of the sheets Teresa had washed in the washing machine during the morning, had a plastic section running around the lower edges. This plastic edge had a puddle of water held within it, which had meant that when Teresa hung it upstairs to dry - the water had leaked out onto the upstairs floor and found its way down the wall and ultimately to the lounge floor. That won’t be happening again and really pleased we didn’t pester Hannah, Lorna or Alan with it !!
The afternoon drifted into not very much at all, I did quite of research on the web about a whole host of things from flooring and repairing floor joists to roof tile types their fitting and spacing . . . I won’t bore you with anything else.
I had a slightly weird social media update that the joint chairman of West Ham had died. Weird in as much that I was only talking about him the other night to Craig and Kate and telling them the story of my driving him in his Rolls Royce earlier this year. He was a lovely fella that evening as was his fiancé - sad news!
We had chilli for dinner - Tre made sure she had similar pots this time, not a chilli and curry mix 🙄
The evening slipped away and we finished it off with another Netflix series . . . now starting The Killing Series 2 . . . subtitles are not advised in the late evening, as I think Tre managed about 15 minutes before the eyes were firmly closed and heavy breathing had started. That will be another re watch tomorrow!
Another day done . . .Читать далее

03.01 Day 109 . . . Heading Home

We were leaving Craig and Kate today, we didn’t want to outstay our welcome despite assurances that were weren’t. The guys had things to do and we needed to get home and sort some bits before Did’d arrived at the weekend.
After stuffing our little cheeks with breakfast we said our goodbyes and hopped into Roxvanne at about 1030am.
We made a very brief stop at a shop in Aignan, before heading out west bound, generally across country along towards and through Termes-d’Armagnac, further west to Saint-Germé before picking up the A65 somewhere near to Aire-Sur-l’Adour. We then travelled about 65km carefully watching the decreasing fuel gauge until finding the first services on the A65, where we stopped for fuel and nibbles for the journey. We set off again generally north west / north towards Bordeaux remaining on the A65 until on the outskirts of Bordeaux we merged onto our beloved N10 north.
Forever northwards we drove, before off we got to travel the road to nowhere D948 towards home. On the way we encountered som really weird fog banks that came from nowhere and then we’re gone.
We decided to have a drive past the house at Chenay - just to remind ourselves and to see it in the sunshine. I also grabbed some photos of the roof tiles so I could discuss them with Craig.
From there it was straight home, where we unloaded Rox and stuck the pellet burner on . . . it was a tadge chilly back in our stone house!
We had driven for best part of four hours from Craig & Kate’s to our without not one traffic jam or piece of congestion, we couldn’t quite believe it.
We spent the evening nibbling cheese and bread, chorizo and olives - with a couple of glasses of wine and beer . . . Good to be home. That said we had had the most brilliant time away and had a fantastic New Year with Craig & Kate.
We couldn’t of had a better first New Year in France.
Time for bed - it had all been too much for Tre 😂Читать далее

02.01 Day 108 . . . A Day At The Table

Well, we are now showing our age, as the last couple of days have really caught up on all of us. I woke about 9am and then dozed until Tre woke about an hour later. We decided to stay in bed snoozing until we heard Craig and Kate moving around upstairs in their bedroom. So at midday we were all finally up and sitting in the kitchen/diner chatting and having some brekkie.
We carried on chatting until the subject of the evening meal menu came up. We opted for a lasagne and some other bits and so after a short while Craig, Tre and I ventured out to go get supplies in Aignan. Food bits purchased we returned and again sat chatting and drinking more vino.
Kate’s chilli infused lasagne was bloody lovely in the early evening - just what we all needed. Now totally stuffed we continued to just sit and chat and catch up. We hadn’t moved from the table all day apart from the visit to Aignan.
Midnight came upon us and we all folded - completely whacked and belly’s full we all hit our beds.
A brilliant day of doing nothing but sharing time with great friends.
I had today found one little quote while sifting social media in bed during the morning . . . It seemed to sum up our plans for 2023.Читать далее

01.01 Day 107 . . . New Years Day 2023

Due to our senior years we are not that used to getting into bed at 6am any more . . . nor the partying all of the night before that.
Getting up at midday after this was even more of a wrench, but we needed to get back to Demu to clear up, although we had done quite a bit before we left last night.
We left to get to Demu for 3.30pm, aiming to be there a little before some others arrived at 4.00pm. Once there it was just a case of glasses being washed up and put away, candles and holders collected up, other bits and pieces sorted and then the surplus drink and food sorted and split into parcels for some of the guests and those that had worked so hard to get the night together. It wasn’t long before Christian and Pascale arrived to add their efforts. So in no real time most was sorted and a fair amount of standing chatting and wine drinking took place . . . again! Teresa had a quick 20 minutes of French conversation with the guys to add to her ever increasing skill level, whilst I as usual grabbed the main thrust of the conversation, hearing the odd word or two that I could understand. David and Mira popped in from next door with the mad dog, just to say hello, as they appeared to have only just got up.
All done we packed up the car and said our good byes to Christian and Pascale. On route home Craig and Kate dropped some goodies to Ping, the other parcels had gone with Christian and Pascale for guys living closer to them.
I guess we got back to Castelnavet about 6.00pm, where we took up residence in the kitchen at the table once more. All a little jaded we sat and had some of the left over nibbles from the night before and other bits and pieces . . . obviously with even more wine. Trying to work out the best way to sharpen Craig’s new knife set was possibly not the best of ideas in this jaded state 😂
We sat chatting until 2.00am at which point we called it a night, although I quite honestly had lost track of all time.
So the 1st day of the New Year had passed in a blur . . . we are in 2023 . . . will we see our own house this year?
Fingers crossed.Читать далее

31.12 Day 106 . . . Our First New Year!

So after a not too early nights sleep, we all four emerged for breakfast. Today we needed to get over to Demu to finish setting up for the evenings party.
We left Castelnavet at about 11am and drove over to Demu.
First thing to be done were balloons . . . and I mean balloons. Kate produced two packets that were full of them, that needed blowing up. Some had glitter and reflective pieces in. These however were a little less robust than the others and it wasn’t long before one or two had popped and the contents strewn around the kitchen.
The next hour or so was taken up with the balloons, napkin folding, fire lighting, collecting additional logs, candles in jars and opening and re-corking wine and fizz bottles for ease of use in the evening. Also required was a team effort to gather mistletoe from a tree and getting this tied and hung around the house. We were joined fairly early on by Pascal and Christian and a few others to help with everything.
Craig and Kate had also told us before we arrived that the evening was to be fancy dress, Tre and I obviously had nothing with us having travelled light to France in September. Kate had told us she had dug some ideas out for us back at Castelnavet, which was a little scary as I suspected Craig had found me a pair of budgie smugglers and some swimming arm bands . . . or similar!
We returned to castelnavet arriving about 4pm.
Tre and I tried on our located fancy dress options which weren’t as bad as I had suspected. A Father Christmas gig for me, which suited my slightly rotund waistline and beard, Tre a cowgirl outfit, which she was well pleased with.
Showers were next, with Craig and Kate then also prepping some additional canapés to take over.
At about 7.30pm we hopped in the car with quite a few bits and pieces and the canapés and headed back over to Demu.
Guests had been asked to arrive around 9pm for a sit down three course meal prepared by one of the group - Joele, who to his immense credit had taken on the task of cooking for 24, a three course meal - having never cooked for a group like this before!!!
Christian and Pascal arrived shortly after our arrival and we all finished off the last bits and pieces for the evening.
At 9pm the other guests started to arrive with some brilliant fancy dress attempts.
Soon the wine was flowing and the room was a complete hubbub of chatting and laughter.
It seemed not long after that we were all seated and the first course arrived. Time had slipped as we were still enjoying the first course as midnight arrived.
Champagne now flowing we saw New Year in with laughter, hugs and kisses.
The night continued with another two brilliant dishes from Joele, music and dancing - lots of wine and even more champagne. My French improved - or at least it seemed it had in my slightly squiffy mind. Tre was in full flow, her French now relaxed was really impressive, at times I had no idea of the conversation I was nodding and laughing along to.
Slowly during the early hours the guests started to thin out and at about 4am it was only the hardcore that remained.
We started the clear up and some washing and drying up I. An effort to make tomorrow (today) an easier clear up.
By the time we left the vast amount had been done and we rolled back into Castelnavet just before 6am, where without and delay we all hurried for our beds.
A brilliant, brilliant night - lovely guests and a stunning meal. A fantastic way for Teresa and I to celebrate our very first New Year in France.
Here’s to many more!!Читать далее

30.12 Day 105 . . . To Craig & Kate’s

We got up relatively early this morning. Teresa had decided to make use of the bath in our room, as we’ve not got one at our home. I convinced her to take her time, as there was no rush and to have a lovely deep bath. Next time I decide to be charming and caring, I need to have a word with myself - as when I had a very very ice cold shower due to no hot water, I was a little upset with my decision making!
We said good bye to the very helpful staff at reception and drive from Pau, deciding to visit Tarbes on route to Craig and Kate’s.
I immediately took the wrong turn and got onto the toll road - only for one junction, but none the less Teresa found it amusing 🤨
On our way to Tarbes the mountains looked lovely ahead of us and round to the west. Still not a lot of snow up there though. We grabbed some photos on the move, but they never do justice to the view your eyes take in. At one point there was a lot of mist swirling around the lower slopes and the low lying fields. In amongst this we saw a stunning church just poking out of the mist - so we decided to go and have a closer look and to get a stunning photo. Well the stunning photo never happened as the mist is apparent from a distance but not close up and also the church - on arrival in Ibos, the village in which it was - was not the most picturesque. It was very square and angular, certainly not as we had seen it from some distance. Eglise Saint-Laurent is not one we will return to.
Tarbes - well Tarbes was a disappointment, either we were not in the right part of the town or it wasn’t that brilliant. As a result we didn’t even stop, after a drive around what we thought was the centre - we headed out.
Not far out of Tarbes we stopped to grab some breakfast at a roadside patisserie. The young lady within was obviously amused at our English chatter to each other before we ordered - as when we hit the counter she put on her best over the top London accent (with a French twist) and exclaimed ‘Milk and Sugar’ and cracked herself up laughing. It was quite funny - she was a real character.
After grabbing drinks and some cash from across the road, we started to head east towards Craig and Kate’s. We passed through Vic En Bigorre, on towards Maubourguet and then skirted Auriébat Tre mentioned she had never been to Marciac, famed for it jazz festivals and so we made a detour on route to swing through. A great emphasis is placed on jazz in the town, which is taught as a regular subject in local schools. The town itself is known for its annual Jazz in Marciac festival, held for a fortnight in August. A marquee ("le chapiteau") capable of seating 6,000 is erected on the rugby field, with concerts hosted there every night for the duration of the festival, and free music from 11:00 till 20:00 every day. Stalls selling a variety of related and non-related merchandise are erected in and around the centre of the village square, where free concerts are given during the day. Other musical events take place around the town at the same time, such as the "Atelier de Jazz".
After a brief stop in Marciac to admire the square we headed on to Craig and Kate’s arriving about 3pm in Castelnavet.
After a couple of glasses of something we headed out early evening. Craig had booked us into a pizzeria in Nogaro - Pizzeria Chez Quentin. We had a fab evening and the food was lovely.
Back at Castelnavet we sat and chatted until stupid o’clock, before realising we had a fairly busy day tomorrow setting up for New Year and most likely a very late night.Читать далее
