    Die Gailberghöhe Hotel, Kötschache

    October 23, 2016 in Austria

We set off south hoping to cross the Hohe Tauren mountain range on the main road after having been refused entry to the more scenic high road yesterday. Thankfully it was second time lucky and for an €11 toll we still got to see some beautiful sights but from the safety of a wide road untouched by snow.

Soon after we were over the range we swung off the north south road and on to a smaller east west route marked as scenic on the map. Our stopover was run by Die Gailberghöhe Hotel and we were treated as guests and encouraged to make use of the facilities. We parked up at a spot where we could see a rocky snowcapped mountain (when the clouds allowed) and because electricity was included in the price, we plugged the van in. It was the first time since we left the UK nearly 4 months ago that we'd had mains electricity and so for tea Will plugged in our Remoska, a little electric saucepan with a heated lid that acts as an oven. It also meant we didn't need to worry about the fridge whose gas flame had been struggling to light due to low air pressure caused by high altitude.

As the light was fading we went and sat in the comfortable hotel lounge to use the free wifi. Unfortunately it wasn't a good enough connection to do much but we did enjoy stretching out in the plush armchairs with the log fired stove burning in the corner and the contented talk of others around us.

    Dobriach to Petodnighutte

    June 15 in Austria

    17 km/7 hours/ 1166m ascent/124m descent
We tried to think of today as a ‘rest day’ ambling along 17km of relatively easy walking, after yesterday’s assault.
We are sleeping again tonight in a delightful mountain hut which is 90 years old (including the furniture).

  • Day44

    Alexanderhutte to Dobriach

    June 14 in Austria

    25km/8 hrs/ 584m ascent/1796m descent
A killer day today of more exposed ridge line, poorly marked trail, unmarked detours and nearly 1800m of descent.
We were grateful that we could bathe our very sore feet in the waters of Lake Seeboden.

  • Day47

    17km/1062m ascent/ 1500m descent
Today we decided to take an alternative mini adventure and go off track to arrive in Bad Kleinkirchheim a little earlier so that I could fulfil my wish of spending time at a Therme (swimming baths). It was glorious to slip into the warm water to sooth aching feet and legs and to spend time relaxing on the sun lounges.

  • Day32

    12.5 km/173m ascent/1,267m descent
Day one was everything I hoped for, plus more........more rocky tracks, more icy river crossings, more slippery ice slopes, more cow poo covered, icy slippery rocky slopes .... the challenges just kept coming but we did it and it was incredible.

  • Day43

    Seeboden to Alexanderhutte

    June 13 in Austria

    22km/8 hours/1670m ascent/466m descent
We walked up into the clouds today with wonderful views of the lake below and the mountains all around. When we arrived at a mountain hut at midday the owner suggested that we might need to take a shortcut because of a forecast storm. The mountain Gods held off just enough for us to continue on the 2100m ridge line. It was very exposed, cold and rainy but a great adventure. Arriving at our final destination, Alexanderhutte was a wonderful and welcome sight and we retreated out of the rain into a warm cosy room to hot soup and, of course, schnapps. We then spent the evening dining with Bruce and Isabel watching (through the big picture windows) the clouds passing below us and revealing beautiful views - as if we were in an aeroplane.Read more

    Huhnersberg to Gmund

    June 11 in Austria

    14km/255m ascent/563m descent/3.5 hours
An easy day of walking but still very hot in the full sun. Gmünd is a pretty Artists’ town but things were still fairly slow and sleepy because it’s only the beginning of their summer holiday season. Once again we are the only guests in this grand old hotel and it is the most luxurious accommodation we’ve had so far.

  • Day42

    Gmund to Seeboden

    June 12 in Austria

    14.8 km/ 4.5 hours/ 310m descent/460m ascent
We really made the most of our last relatively easy and short stage.
It was hot and sunny for our few hours of walking but unfortunately another storm came through just as we arrived in Seeboden which put a stop to our swimming plans (temp of lake water is around 24 degrees in Summer). The weather cleared in the evening and we enjoyed dinner (beautiful fish from the lake) at a lovely lakeside restaurant, watching the sun go down over the water.Read more

  • Day38

    Mallnitz to Obervellach

    June 8 in Austria

    17.7 km/230m ascent/730m descent/6.5 hours
Today was a spectacular day as promised, with a walk out to a mountain lake (Stappitzer See) and then continuing on through 2 river gorges. This path was described as ‘audacious’ which we now understand means ‘hanging off a cliff face over raging torrents and waterfalls’!
