      Großglockner

      Heute ging es über die Glocknerhochalpenstraße Richtung Großglockner. Wir sind gegen 7:00 Uhr los und waren relativ zeitig an der Mautstation. Mussten nicht warten und konnten gleich hoch fahren. Unser erster Stopp war auf der Edelweißspitze. Dann ging es weiter bis zum Endpunkt der Straße auf der Franz Josef Höhe. Gut 5 Stunden haben wir ober verbracht. Dann schlug das Wetter um und wir machten uns wieder auf den Weg nach unten. Als wir wieder gut unten angekommen waren entschlossen wir uns zu einem Besuch des Wildparkes Ferleiten. Ist ein sehr schöner Wildpark. Leider ist die Hälfte des Parkes gesperrt. Dort gab es 2019 Überschwemmung und Murenabgänge bei Starkregen. Dabei wurde der hintere Teil des Wildparkes zerstört. Der Wiederaufbau dauert an!
      Den Tag ausklingen lassen haben wir wieder auf unserem Balkon mit herrlichem Blick auf das Tennengebirge!      Read more

      Sehr hübsch, aber es ist auch ein Hindernis Rennen durch gefühlte tausend Probierangebote für Wein und Obstbrände. Wenn man alle mitnimmt, handelt man sich vermutlich eine amtliche Alkoholvergiftung ein... weil wir lieber Fahrrad fahren, haben wir alle Angebote ausgeschlagen.Read more

      Dürnstein & Danube River

      Our first stop this morning was the medieval town of Dürnstein. It has a beautiful abbey, but its true claim to fame is that Richard the Lionhearted was imprisoned and held for ransom in the castle on the hills above the town. England paid the ransom (currently valued at roughly $3B) to Austria to secure his release.

      Wachau Valley, Austria

      What we did:
      - Woke up to catch an 8:15 train from Budapest to Vienna. Got to the train station with plenty of time to spare but Sally and Trent got separated from Steph and Doug and got lost somehow? Those two…SMH (shake my head). Got on the train with two minutes to spare after finding them again. First train that Steph and Trent took with seat troubles. Likely because this is such a popular route, people pay extra for seat reservations. As a result, all four of us got kicked out of seats multiple times before we decided to upgrade to first class and ride out the remaining three hours in peace.
      - Arrived at the Vienna train station, threw our stuff in temporary storage lockers, and boarded a train to Wachau Valley! We had been communicating with a guy named Erwin who would drop off e-bikes for us at the train station and then pick them up at another train station later in the day. However, Erwin decided to stop responding to us the day leading up to the bike activity, and we were unsure if we were even going to be able to do the biking up until 20 minutes before when he sent us an “all good - enjoy your ride!” message.
      - Doug and Sally walked Trent and Steph through the basics of an e-bike and we were off. WOW! Trent and Steph are completely sold on e-bikes and don’t know why people bother with normal bikes anymore. Boring. The e-bikes make it so much more relaxing and really allow you to enjoy the scenery! And, my goodness, the scenery! So pretty! Perfect crisp fall day, following along the Danube river, through rolling hills with vineyards. Such a perfect day - shoutout Sally and Doug for pitching and planning this activity!
      - Steph was dying of starvation and caffeine deprivation (and not being quiet about it) so we stopped at a little hotdog stand on the river. Such a nice group of Austrians who ran it, and great vibes! Split some hot dogs, pastries, and got some coffees while we enjoyed the view. Got back on the bikes and took a (ferry?) across the river. More like a floating barge utilizing a pulley system to get it back and forth across 100 feet of water.
      - Grabbed lunch at a beer garden in Spitz and then went on our way. The second half of the bike trip was definitely the most scenic as this is where the vineyards and small towns really started. We ended up stopping at a winery for a quick glass of wine. Lots of people in an outdoor garden and very picturesque! Steph is still unconvinced that we didn’t crash some sort of neighborhood gathering, but hey everyone was very nice when they tried to talk to us in German.
      - Hopped back on the bikes and cycled through the valley during golden hour and sunset. Lost the men for a bit when they decided to stop and admire a local soccer stadium. Found Erwin back at the train station, dropped of the bikes, and hopped on a couple of trains back to Vienna.
      - Train ride allowed Doug to get some shut eye while the rest of us people watched. A group of young Austrian boys hopped on the train and one let out a giant burp, and unable to stop her natural instinct, Sally proceeded to say “EW!” loudly enough for everyone to hear which made the whole train car chuckle (including the boys)😂. Sally then thought the way the boys were talking sounded like Arnold Schwarzenegger so she took a video to send to Jenna and Joe (J&J have been into Arnold after watching his documentary on Netflix).
      - After getting semi-lost in the very large Vienna train station, we made our way to the hotel and stopped at an Italian restaurant nearby for dinner. After a long day, we called it a night to get some rest for exploring the city of Vienna the next day!

      What we ate:
      - Train breakfast and coffees
      - Imbiss Aggsbach Dorf: hot dogs, some sort of cinnamon twist pastry, coffees, and beers
      - Gasthaus Spitzerl: Radler beers for the women, Austrian beers for the men, sausages, skillets, and a burger
      - Weingut Famile Hermenegild Mang: Wine at a vineyard! A couple of reds and a couple of whites.
      - SOTH.kitchen: pizzas and a salad for trent and Steph, pistachio pasta for Sally, and lasagna for Doug

      Fun facts:
      - Arnold Schwarzenegger was born in a suburb about 20 minutes outside of Vienna.
      - Wachau Valley is one of the biggest wine producing regions in Austria.      Read more

      Grein --> Wachau

      Nach dem Frühstück gings direkt zum Fahrradladen. Der Besitzer hatte kein Personal, stellte mir aber seine Werkstatt zur Verfügung, sodass ich selbst einen neuen Schlauch montieren konnte.
      Danach fuhren wir mit der Fahrradfähre auf das andere Donauufer. Dort legten wir bei trockenem, aber nicht zu heißem Wetter auf tollen Wegen mit reichlich Verpflegungs- und Eispausen fast 70 Km bis in die Wachau zurück.
      Nach einem leckeren Essen in unserer Unterkunft (Gasthaus Zur Wachau) und einem kleinen Spaziergang geht es jetzt ins Bett.      Read more

      19. Okt.: Dürnstein

      Wir sind am Morgen früh in Dürnstein angekommen. Gleich nach dem Frühstück sind wir mit einer Fremdenführerin losgezogen um das kleine Städchen zu erkunden.
      Dürnstein ist eine Stadt mit 792 Einwohnern im Bezirk Krems-Land in Niederösterreich. In Verbindung mit der landschaftlichen und architektonischen Schönheit der Wachau ist der Ort eines der bekanntesten touristischen Ziele in Österreich geworden. Der blaue Turm der Stiftskirche gilt als Wahrzeichen auch der Wachau. (Wikipedia).
      Nach 1 Stunde war die Führung beendet und wir wurden am Stadtrand ausgesetzt. So blieb noch genügend Zeit noch etwas durch die Gassen zu schlendern.
      Um 11:30 löste sich unser Schiff aus der Umklammerung.

      Aufgeschoben = nicht Aufgehoben

      Aufgrund vom Glüüwürmchenlook, auch Sonnenbrand genannt, wurde im T-Shirt geradelt. Mann schaut ja auf seine Gesundheit - und Mami liest mit 😉😘 gestern durdte ich überall Menschen kennen lernen. Am morgen auf dem Camping einen Holländer und unterwegs Lasslo einen Rentner aus Ungarn, der mir aus seinem Leben erzählte und ich ihm bei seinem Navi geholfen habe, welches er bereits seit 7 Tagen brauchte. Auf dem Camping lernte ich Charly ein Franzose welcher bereits von Paris nach Passau und nun von Passau nach Istanbuhl radelt und mir sein Hängematte-Schlafkonstrukt erklärt hat (was aufgrund fehlenden Bäume in diesem Camping komplett nicht auf ging 😉). Somit war ich so mit Diskutieren beschäftigt, das ich gar nicht zum schreiben kam 😉☺️. Solche Begegnungen lassen meine Projekte jeweils Richtig anfühlen. Ich schätze den Austausch und es ist immer toll zu wissen, nicht die Einzige zu sein. Zudem bin ich nun Stolze Besitzerin eines pinken Messers und war, nach einem Videogespräch mit meiner Familie, zum ersten Mal in der Donau baden.Read more

      Der Stift Melk ist eine Benediktinerabtei oberhalb der Stadt.Die Abtei wurde 1089 gegründet.Heute befindet sich ein Gymnasium,die weitaus bekannte Stiftsbibliothek die uber16000 Bücher und eine umfangreiche Sammlung von handschriftlichen Schriften , Besonders sehenswert ist die Stiftskirche leider war das Fotografieren in den Innenräumen verboten.,heute ist die Abtei eins der meistbesuchten Gebäude von Österreich auch leben hier noch 23 Mönche die aktiv arbeiten und beten.Read more

      Durnstein

      Now sailing through Austria and there is a change to the riverbank. The water level is still low so seeing “beaches”, but behind them a wider variety of larger trees and forested hills. This scene is broken up by small villages with the vineyards in the fields and terraced hills nearby. Durnstein is one of these small villages although perhaps one of the oldest ones as dates back to around 800. We arrived here overnight and have an hour walking tour, then an hour to get back to the ship before it leaves at 11:00. The main claim to fame is that the castle (now a ruin being destroyed in the Catholic / Protestant wars) overlooking the village was where Richard the Lionhearted was imprisoned for 3 months on his return from the crusades. The village naturally now has a hotel named after this famous visitor. This hotel in the small main square was originally built as a convent for the Poor Clares then became a grain store and then a wine store. A new “castle”, more realistically a palace was built in the village and this is now another hotel, although it does have the benefit of a nearby watchtower used to monitor the river. The small main square has a pillory stone, (you can see the steel ring where offenders were hung from for a while as an example to others). The mint coloured building was the village bathhouse hence the painting above the door. There is only one of the gateways remaining from the period when the village was surrounded by a wall, Dürnstein abbey with the blue church tower behind, is no longer used as a monastery and is now just the village church with other buildings used as the village primary school and for meetings.

      Von Melk nach Tulln 81 km

      Es ist immer wieder ein schönes Gefühl, morgens mein Fahrrad unbeschädigt im Abstellraum zu sehen. Einen 1/2 Tag in einer Stadt ist genug, dann freue ich mich wieder aufs Rad zu steigen. Auch heute, super Bedingungen, warm, Sonnenschein, top Radwege und durch die Wachau zu radeln ist ein Glück 🍀. Mittelgebirge zu beiden Seiten der Donau und der Radweg führt durch Obst- und Weinanbaugebiete, links und rechts Burgen, Schlösser und Stifte. Auf der Burg Spitz soll Richard Löwenherz gefangen gehalten worden sein. Allein das ich mit einer durchschnittlichen Geschwindigkeit von 20,4 km/h geradelt bin, sagt alles über die Bedingungen heute. Die Burgen besichtige ich nicht, die liegen nämlich alle oben auf einem Berg oder Anhöhe. Tulln ist eine mittelgroße Stadt und der Geburtsort von Egon Schiele. Das kleine Museum war gut organisiert, hatten aber wenig Exponate. Die Unterkunft ist top.Read more
