      Eisriesenwelt, Worlds Largest Ice Cave

      We were slipping up to the Ice Caves. We curved in and out of the mountain on a 40 minute hike to the short cable car ride. Walking up the exactly what you would imagine. It was steep and it was tough but it was beautiful. Fog came in great layers at times, but once cleared, it was worth the wait. We stopped at the little restaurant, Wimmerhutte at the top of the first hike for some carbs and of course, some beer.
      By the time we finally reached the top of the mountain, summer became winter. Inside the caves, it was cold and it was dark. Every 4th person gets a lantern and it's just enough light to see the stairs. We had 1400 stairs to climb during our time at the caves, 700 up and 700 down. The guide only used magnesium strips to light the caves so you could see them. No flash photography was allowed inside the cave. It was kept in it's natural condition. The tour took about an hour.

      Eisriesenwelt Ice Caves

      Time to leave Salzburg today, which meant we were homeless until we could check in at our next place after 3pm. It was also raining, so an indoor activity was required. What better activity than to visit the world's largest ice cave?

      The slight flaw in the plan was that after driving to the parking lot of the ice cave and buying a ticket, there was a 20 minute uphill walk to the cable car. After going up the cable car (very steep!) there was another 20 minute uphill walk. Both walks were in wafty rain with clouds coming and going and remnant of overnight snow on the ground.

      The ice cave tour was incredible. Lasted about 70 minutes and during that time we walked up another 700 stairs, the guide saying by the time we finished we had walked the equivalent of a 40 storey skyscraper today. The temperature in the caves is a consistent zero degrees all year around, so we were suffering from cold noses and lack of feeling in our toes by the time we got down to the warmth of the restaurant.

      It was quite incredible seeing the speed with which the clouds were wafting up and down the mountains.

      We relocated to an AirBnB overlooking Lake Mondsee. The apartment is on an organic farm, so we have arranged for a litre of milk direct from the cows to be delivered at breakfast tomorrow! There are a number of cats living here, and within minutes of arriving one of them had made itself at home on Kate, then walked into the bedroom and taken up residence.

      Both then followed us down to the games room. Kate has named them Felix and Garfield. Felix kept jumping up on pool table and rolling around right where you wanted to play your shot. I suspect they are used to lots of guests giving them lots of attention.

      The other interesting thing about today is that it is Sunday... in Austria... which is like Sunday in Queensland in the early 1980s. Nothing is open! Luckily we were able to cobble together some sort of unleavened bread thing + a sausage and some cheese for dinner which we had in our grocery supplies.      Read more

      Reisi planeerides ei saanud üldse aru, et sellest kohast nii hull matk sünnib, kui see oli. Lõõmava kuumusega parkisime auto Werfeni külla ja mõtlesime, et läheme võtame selle shuttle bussi, mida Eisriesenwelt pakub, et ei peaks autoga nii kuumaga 5km 21% tõusus jändama. Selleks, et tõstuki peale saada pidi kõndima mäest üles päris pika maa, tõstuki juurde jõudes olime läbimärjad. Sõitsime tõstukiga üles ja siis sealt veel edasi pidi kõndima veel järsult tükk maad üles. Kohale jõudes tilkusime. Lamp kustus ära ja ise pidi enda keha väga kõva jõuga suruma. Sees ootas meid 700 trepiastet väga järsult üles ja väga kõrged koopad täis jääd.       Day 11: Austrian Ice Caves

      Our first challenge today was to go through these caves in Austria with amazing ice formations. Once inside the caves, there were about 700 steps (up and then 700 down) and about a mile and half of walking to do the tour. However, getting to the caves themselves was an even more strenuous walk (and a short, but steep, cable car ride), but the views into the valley below were absolutely gorgeous.

      The ice formations themselves were quite impressive and the tour had a really funky vibe. They handed out these carbide lanterns with an open flame that looked like they were from a hundred years ago and when the guide wanted to illuminate something even more, he would light a piece of phosphorous. Very old school and gave you a bit of an understanding of what the original explorers saw when they entered the caves back around 1910.      Read more

      Heute nacht hat es ein kleines bisschen geschneit. Noch etwas Neues für meine Fellnase 😉
      Was machen wir heute, unserem letzten Tag? Da wäre doch die Burg nett.
      Jaaa, die Burg...
      Die toppt natürlich alles - ist geschlossen bis April 2019! Was nicht so schlimm ist, spart Geld: keine Bahnfahrt rauf und runter, kein Kaffee mit „Mööhspeis“ (österreichisch für Kuchen = Mehlspeise). Ich gehe mit Strolchi spazieren, der hat sowieso Reizüberflutung bei all dem Neuen hier.
      Zu hause 🏡 gibt es dann Kaffee ☕️.
