      Get around the Prater

      January 6, 2020 in Austria ⋅ ⛅ 3 °C

Following our jaunt through Augarten to look at Nazi relics, we headed toward the Prater park with the hope of winter markets and possibly an amusement park ride or two (assumed it was mostly closed in the winter).

Sweet Jeebers it was a winner. Roller coasters with no lines. Crazy high chair swings. Bonkers swinging pendulum things, and all the other theme park trimmings.

We could walk up to any ride we wanted and jump straight on. There was a decent little rollercoaster to start, then the mammoth chair swing. It's 117m high, in a chain secured with some small chains with your feet dangling around in the wind, and I was petrified. I couldn't look around, up, or down - just dead straight the whole time. Lex enjoyed that a lot.

To help calm down from this we moved straight on to the giant pendulum thing. Almost as high at its peak, but travelling a lot faster than the chairs-on-chains, with the added perk of tumbling you upside down. Loved the rush of it apart from the bit where it slows down and stops with us right up the top. Panicked a bit.

That was it for heights based rides for me. Had a play with a couple of the go-kart tracks, and then gave a house of horrors/rollercoaster a crack. Being the big horror fans we are (not) this did seem a logical decision. The photo presented to us at the end of the ride proves otherwise (pictured).

Grabbed one more indoor rollercoaster/laser show on the way out of the rides area and headed to the Christmas market for a glühwein weiß (mulled white wine). Great success for a non-planned afternoon.

      Vienna

      January 20, 2020 in Austria ⋅ ⛅ 1 °C

A wonderful stay with Verena and Albert in Vienna.
We met this lovely couple in Italy many months ago when we started chatting in a restaurant. With great generosity and heart they gave us their details and invited us to stay in their apartment in Vienna, at any time. We were delighted to take up this kind offer and we were treated to an amazing home cooked feast. In fact we sat down at this table at 11 am and spent the next 13 hours talking, drinking and eating - such a memorable afternoon and evening with wonderful company.Read more

      Hör auf, es zu genießen

      March 13, 2020 in Austria ⋅ ☀️ 55 °F

"Plenty of people miss their share of happiness, not because they never found it, but because they didn't stop to enjoy it." - William Feather

We slept in today. To be honest, there was a little bit of an urge to do nothing but lay around and mourn the ruins of our honeymoon. But we got some treats from the patisserie downstairs, had some tea, and got moving.

We spent our early afternoon walking around the city center, discovering museums and historical landmarks (that were closed), and enjoying each other's company. We stopped at the Palmenhaus for some lunch, walked around Hofburg palace, and found a spot in the grass to lay down and read.

The rest of our afternoon was filled with more wandering, relaxing, and eating local Viennese food. Then we went to a concert. Sure, it was no Wagner at the Staatsoper, but watching a small group of performers playing the hits of Beethoven and Strauss was a wonderful evening.

Budapest was amazing, to be sure. The sights and experiences were amazing. But we had so much to see and do, the focus was often on experiencing it all. Now, in a weird twisted sense, we're being forced to just stop and enjoy the happiness of being married to each other.

      So thank Coronavirus, I guess?

      ÖV & Velo

      April 25, 2022 in Austria ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

Former residence of the Habsburgs: very magnificent (at least from the outside).
Among other things, the museum of the famous Empress Sissi and the National Library can be visited here. 💎 On the way there was the Art History and Natural Science Museum. 🎨

      Famous Saint Stephen’s Catholic Church
      A choir was singing.
Apparently the Austrians are really tired of being confused with Australia because there are lots of shirts in souvenir shops that say
      Austria-No kangaroos here
Tonight we are going to a Mozart concert at the Opera House — will post more later…

      Vienna

      July 12, 2022 in Austria ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

[JJ] We packed a hell of a lot into our day trip to Vienna. First, we emerged from the hauptbahnhof and walked into the city centre via Belvedere Palace gardens. We then explored the area around the Hofberg and Spanish riding school, before a general explore took us to St Stephen's Cathedral, where we climbed the north tower and saw views over the city. Once we figured out how to navigate the metro, we found ourselves at Schönbrunn Palace, something of a lidl deluxe version of Kingston Lacy, and probably the most impressive attraction of the day. Finally we darted back to the main train station to collect some shopping and dinner to eat just in time for our train off to Budapest.

Vienna was very pretty, filled with ornate pastel coloured architecture.
