  • Kaikoura

    16. November 2019, South Pacific Ocean ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

We had an early start. The reason: whale watching 🐳 yay!! Since babies‘ were not allowed we split up. Matilda and I went this morning and Thomas will be on tomorrow‘s early morning tour.

Unfortunately poor Matilda got seasick. But brave little girl managed to wait and finally see a whale (in fact we saw 2 😊). To be precise it‘s a male sperm whale and the other one‘s a humpback whale. Also a couple of albatrosses crossed our way and a seal decided to put up a show while we waited for the humpback whale to turn up again.

In the afternoon we explored the Kaikoura peninsula. Drove as far as possible. Parked the motorhome and started climbing over the rocks the low tide revealed. The peninsula‘s home to seal colonies and to shore birds. On the way back the official peninsula coastal track offered a stunning view.

  • Kaikoura to Nelson

    18. November 2019 in Neuseeland ⋅ 🌧 0 °C

Thomas had an early start and went this morning to a whale watch tour. And lucky him he did not only see the sleep whale as we did yesterday, but also Orcas and a couple of different dolphin species!! He was so happy and yes, driving to Kaikoura was quite a detour, but so worth it.

Today we wanted to go as near as possible to Abel Tasman Nationalpark and decided to stop in Nelson for the night and fill up our groceries the next morning.

On the second picture: the not so joy of a camper‘s life: dumping...

  • Stuck in Stoke/Nelson

    18. November 2019 in Neuseeland ⋅ 🌧 14 °C

Our fridge never properly worked on the route. But since Kaikoura it decided to give up. We were directed to a close by workshop and a very dedicated electrician tried to fix the problem. We were told to return the next day, as they needed to order a special electronic board. So we headed to a nearby campground and explored the little town Richmond and its playgrounds (New Zealand offers at every corner a playground) and had nice Thai food.

No pictures today: it wasn‘t spectacular 😬

  • Stoke / Marahau (Abel Tasman)

    19. November 2019 in Neuseeland ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

The good thing that we got stuck: we got to visit Pic‘s peanut butter factory, which was just around the corner of the workshop.

Interestingly the fridge decided to work properly overnight so the extra ordered electronic board was no longer needed. (Well, that was a mistake... more to that in a later story).

But now it‘s finally time to head to Abel Tasman NP. To be precise: Marahau, the gate to the Abel Tasman NP. We found a cozy campsite (The Barn), where we finally didn‘t have the feeling that we weren‘t among the youngest or inbetween permanent campsite residents. The Barn‘s a mix of backpackers and Campervans. We booked for 2 nights, as we intended to do a full day of tramping.

  • Abel Tasman NP

    20. November 2019 in Neuseeland ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

The pre-ordered shuttle took us verrrrry early (8:30 😂, based on the previous days and weeks that was early) to the nearby Aquataxi base. Waiting for more people we were ready to board a speedboat 🚤, a tractor‘s 🚜 going to pull us to the beach and push us into the water (it was low tide). Everyone including the kids were asked to put on the lifejackets. First stop: Split Apple Rock. (Luckily we could skip the drive there, as it should be a bumpy road and very little space to turn around.) On the second stop we could spot some fur seals. They blended in perfectly with the stones...

After 30minutes bumpy ride over the Tasman sea we arrived at Anchorage, our starting point of today’s walk to Bark‘s Bay, which is part of Abel Tasman Coastal Walk. The girls were excited to have golden sand under their feet and it was hard to persuade them to start the track, but we had to, as we needed to cross Torrent Bay during low tide as we otherwise needed to make an 1,5hr detour.

Crossing the Bay was good fun. We saw boats on land, loads of mussels and we waddled through streams. The path continued through rain forest along the various bays and saw one beautiful beach after the other. After loooong 8,5km we arrived just in time for our aquataxi, which will bring us back to Marahau, but also meant no further time to spend at the beach... the girls were a bit sad. Especially Matilda, as she walked all by herself (proud mom moment) and was very looking forward to the sand.

    21. November 2019 in Neuseeland ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

The weather‘s currently treating us well and we decided to slow down a bit and stay an extra night.

We explored the beach in Marahau. Built small sandcastles (only to discover later the day that the high tide washed it away). After a pizza (the best pizza we had so far in New Zealand) lunch break we again headed into Abel Tasman NP, just this time we walked the first 1-2kms to the first beach 😁Weiterlesen

  • Marahau / Pohara (Golden Bay)

    22. November 2019 in Neuseeland ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Time to go further north, but unfortunately our fridge decided to give up, again... so we tried to get hold of the rental company first (tricky, as the phone reception was lousy). After an unsuccessful try to repair at a workshop (we could at least drive to beautiful backland) we finally headed to Golden Bay.

Pohara, a small Village between Takaka and the northern part of Abel Tasman NP. And the campground was located behind the sanddune. Perfect for a quick walk to the beach and a swim. Matilda couldn’t wait Greta sat in the sand and started digging 😂

Wharariki Beach, one of the most interesting and beautiful beaches we’ve ever seen. We were lucky it was a rather sunny and calm day. Normally the wind‘s blowing a lot at the northernmost tip of the Southern Island.

From the carpark/campground it‘s about a 20-25min walk to the beach. On our way there we passed by a lot of 🐑 on farmland, forest, and finally ended at the sanddunes. Matilda couldn’t be any happier.

Also saw a couple of seals close by, who chilled at the beach.

We returned after dinner to the beach for a magical sunset 🌅

From the Northernmost point of the South Island we can only head into one direction: South 😂 since it‘s going to be the same route as we came up, we‘ll try to get as far as possible.

We passed by Golden Bay again and filled up our groceries in Takaka, a cute little town, but then needed to cross the Takaka „hill“, where we came to the limits of our brakes. 😬 Along the southern side of the Kahurangi NP (for next time!) we finally made it to Murchison. It was a looooooooong drive.

Near Takaka we had a quick stop at Pupu springs. Crystal clear water. 😍

  • Murchison / Greymouth

    25. November 2019 in Neuseeland ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

Almost made it to the West Coast.

We‘ve seen a couple of oversized transports in our lives. But this one is a special one. When „moving house“ gets a new meaning 😂

First stop: Truman walk. Just a little bit north of Punakaiki. First we thought: ok, just another hike through rainforest. At least the girls were happy and Greta wanted to explore every centimeter. So we kept on walking for a couple of minutes when you suddenly exit the forest and arrive at the beach! Stunning! Rocks, waves, wind.

A little bit south of Punakaiki: Pancake rocks. Lots of people, but well organized. And yes, it was worth the stop. It‘s fascinating how nature creates this kind of stonewalls.

And since we were a bit under time pressure (needed to be in Wanaka by Thursday/Friday for the workshop appointment to get our fridge problem solved), we kept driving to Greymouth. We arrived well after 6pm and the city felt like a ghost city. Stores were closed for the day, if not shut down and it was hard to find an ope restaurant. We ended up at Monteith‘s brewery.

  • Greymouth / Franz Josef Glacier

    26. November 2019 in Neuseeland ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

Greta gave us quite a shock, as she developed quite a rash on her upper body. We first thought that she might have caught measles (currently there‘s a heavy measles outbreak in New Zealand), as she had a couple of those symptoms, but luckily it was just the typical rash after the 3day fever. 😬

After 2 hours driving we finally arrived at Franz Josef Glacier (named after Franz Josef I from Austria-Hungary). We were expecting to be in mountainous area, but we were still admist rainforest 😂 As the weather forecast for tomorrow‘s rain, we quickly headed to the Glacier valley, as we wanted to see some ice. The track was easy (as most of the popular walks in NZ) and signposts along the way showed us how far the glacier went back due to climate change. It‘s a bit frightening.

The night we spent at the Rainforest Holiday retreat. A nice campground in the city surrounded by rainforest.

The original plan was to stay at Fox Glacier overnight, but happy that we did it in Franz Josef. Apparently the main tracks in Fox Glacier were closed due to slips and it was raining anyway. We had a stop at Lake Matheson, where you normally would have an amazing view of the glaciers.

We prepared ourselves to walk in the rain and it sounds weird, but a rainforest during rainfall is magical... we treated ourselves to hot coffee ☕️ and cake 🧁 after the wet experience.

The following drive to Haast was long and we witnessed the scenery to change from rainforest to farmland and coastal area.

From Haast to Wanaka it‘s only 2 hours drive, passing the Blue Pools and the Haast pass.

On a sunny day the Blue Pools would be blue, too, just on a rainy day it‘s a light grey, muddy 😂🙈 Well, it was a quick walk and we got some fresh air.

After passing the pass the weather became better and better (reminds us of going to Italy, we start rainy and after passing the tunnel, it‘s sunny 😁) and soon Lake Wanaka and later on Lake Hawea were visible. Just stunning!

The rainy weather also had its downside, we had a wet bed... luckily we got a quick appointment the same afternoon and got this issue fixed. And the fridge is interestingly working since 2 days. 🤔

We‘re waiting, waiting until the fridge can be fixed. So we got ourselves to the workshop and it turned out that the rental company sent the wrong part for the fridge 🙈 we still decided to get the wrong part exchanged, so we can eliminate this source of error (since we don‘t know exactly what‘s wrong with the fridge).

During the repair we waited in a nearby cafe. First I thought the Kiwi fascination for Pies is strange, but I‘m a fan now, since they put everything in pies, also Green Thai Curry 😂

Finally we were ready to start our day (by 3pm 😏). We headed west of Wanaka to do the Diamond Lake Walk, going up to Lake Wanaka Outlook. It‘s an 1,5 hour return walk. With kids and photo stops, it‘s an 3 hour walk...

And it was finally time for me to drive for the first time with our campervan. It‘s not that bad... Only Thomas reminded me that I was driving 60km/h only, instead of the allowed 100km/h 😁

  • Wanaka to Queenstown

    1. Dezember 2019 in Neuseeland ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Time to move on again! But first a visit to the Puzzling World. They also have a huge outdoor maze. I think we adults had more fun than Matilda, as all she wanted was to play inside 😂

On the way to Queenstown we passed by some skiing areas and we were questioning, where are the skiing lifts? I guess that we are very spoilt in Austria...

Finally we made it to the campground in Queenstown (the town center was in walking distance, but the campers are packed like Sardines) and it‘s raining and we were not so motivated to get out 😂

Queenstown‘s a cute town and when you find a Louis Vuitton you can bet that there were lots of tourists (especially Asian 😁), but the good thing: you find decent Asian food, too. So we ended up at a Vietnamese restaurant at the water front and the Beef Pho was delicious!

Also an ice cream always finds some space in the belly 😄 Matilda’s kiddy cone was huuuge and I was like, ok we‘re sharing 😂

Luckily the weather improved and it stayed dry. The kids had a great time at the playground by the lakeshore and we also witnessed a lovely sunset. Good night Queenstown.

  • Queenstown to Mossburn

    2. Dezember 2019 in Neuseeland ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

Unbelievable but it‘s sunny! 😄 so what to do: either boat ride or going up the hill by Skyline. We opted for the second one and a four person gondola, which we can find in the Austrian Alps took us to the top of the hill. But before we do anything else, first coffee 😂

Matilda was super excited to go on the luge ride. Another chair lift took Matilda and Thomas to the top, while Greta and I waited for them to come down and see, if Matilda liked her first luge ride. And yes she loved it, but only wanted to go again with mom, as daddy‘s too wild 😂

Mossburn‘s our next stop, as we needed an extra night somewhere, as the weather forecast for Milford Sound‘s not the best. So we ended up at a lovely campsite, where we could see 🐑 🐄 🦙 🐓 and even feed them (and only half price of the one in Queentown, but with lots more space).

  • Te Anau to Milford Sound

    4. Dezember 2019 in Neuseeland ⋅ 🌧 4 °C

Finally... finally we‘re driving to Milford Sound. On our way it rained and rained and it was windy. Not just a little bit. We saw hundreds of waterfalls, which wouldn’t exist without all that rain. We saw snow. And one place more beautiful than the other. One would say, hey all this you could have at home, too. Yes, that might be true, but the difference is that nature’s still intact and unlike in Austria less people, which also means less buildings/infrastructure.

    A couple of days ago I pre-booked a
campervan site at the Milford Lodge. The only campsite in Milford Sound and the place is limited. Normally we would just show up and ask for availability.

Due to the weather (it changed from rain to dry to hail to wind to rain and every other possible direction and combination) we didn’t even bother going for a walk and stayed at the kitchen/lounge area and waited for dinner time 😬.

  • Milford Sound to Monkey Island

    5. Dezember 2019 in Neuseeland ⋅ 🌧 9 °C

The hail woke us up in the morning and it was a very early start. Based on the weather forecast we booked the first tour in the morning with Real Journeys (they had breakfast included 😁). Since Matilda got seasick during our whale watching tour we opted for a bigger vessel and she was all fine. And due to the early start there were only a few people on board, as it takes about 2 hrs from Te Anau to be in Milford Sound. (We also saw day tours coming from Queenstown!! This means 5 hrs in each direction + 1,5-2hrs boat tour)

The boat tour itself was amazing. Even with the big vessel the captain drove as close as possible to the waterfalls. And we even „tasted“ some Tasman Sea 🌊. Spotted 🐬 seals and 🐧. The best part: it stayed dry during our cruise!!! It only started raining again when we came closer to the harbour.

A shuttle bus brought us back to the P+R and off we go again. Some snow should be after Homer tunnel. Let’s see 😄

It‘s nice to be early on the road again, so we could go as south as possible - along the Southern scenic route. For tonight we found a nice freedom camping spot at the beach - right in front of Monkey Island. Could spend a couple of days here.

  • Monkey Island to Curio Bay

    6. Dezember 2019 in Neuseeland ⋅ 🌧 17 °C

I think this was the best freedom camping spot so far. Right in front of the clean beach, peaceful and quiet. There was a public toilet, which we didn’t use, as we had our own. Luckily 😄

While I cleaned up the mess from breakfast Thomas went to the beach with Greta. Greta‘s always the first one to leave the Campervan and Matilda only if we force her to 😂 Since yesterday Greta decided to prefer walking to crawling. For a couple of weeks already she‘s walking bit by bit.

On the way to the Catlins we passed by Invercargill. It‘s fine to pass by 😁 And as Greta was sleeping we kept on moving to the next possible dump station.

A couple of weeks ago we‘ve been to the Northernmost point of the South Island a visit to the Southernmost point was therefore obligatory 😄 And it was there were we met a family again. The first time was at the Golden Bay. Since then we‘re meeting every other day by coincidence. It‘s like, if we‘ve matched our travel itineraries to the hour 😄

The night we spent at Curio Bay Campground, as it‘s just a walking distance to see the fossiled forest and penguins 🐧 (blue penguins and yellow eyed penguins, which are endangered).

The fossiled forest is only accessible during low tide and was pretty impressive and we were even fortunate to see a yellow eyed penguin waddling from the sea to his nest.

  • Curio Bay to somewhere in the Catlins

    7. Dezember 2019 in Neuseeland ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

I love these free maps and guides from the local I-sites. They provide lots of info of what to do nearby and are often better than any travelguides. And the best part: I can scribble my notes on it, while I hesitate to do so in books (and even more difficult to do so, if you only have the electronic version of the travelguide).

We continued our way through the Catlins and stopped at the McLeans waterfalls. We stopped counting the number of waterfalls we‘ve already seen on this trip. It was a nice short walk through lush green forest. And there we met the unintended-following-each other family again 😄

Further stops: Tautuku Estuary Board Walk (ok, but necessary a stop. It took longer to park and getting out than actually being out 😂), Lake Wilkie (only Thomas got out, Greta fell asleep and Matilda and I endulged into some ice cream in the meantime 😁), Purakaunui Falls (yes, another waterfall 😂, but it would‘ve been less interesting without that meditating guy on the rock in the middle of the waterfall 😂)

  • Nugget Point to Dunedin

    8. Dezember 2019 in Neuseeland ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Check out time at most of the campground‘s 10am, which we in 99,9% never manage and never has been an issue. Today was the first time the campground host knocked at the door at 10.05 🙈 This kind reminder lead us to a speedy getting ready 😂

So, first stop of the day: Nugget Point. Quite impressive. Thinking of the people 130 years ago, when they came to that area of New Zealand on a stormy day. Must have been quite a trip.

A bit later we finally managed to arrive in Dunedin. We urgently needed to dump and fill up fuel. Just at that moment the dark rain cloud with the heavy rainfall, which we only escaped a bit earlier, caught up again and Thomas ended up a bit wet, while dumping 😬

That rain wasn’t too inviting for a sightseeing tour through Dunedin and we went shopping instead and draw a plan for later the day and tomorrow.

Also a big bonus, if you come to a bigger town in NZ: there‘s plenty of Asian food and they‘re always good value for money 😁 And what‘s more inviting on a rainy day than a hot bowl of Vietnamese Pho 🍲 (noodle soup)? 🤤

  • Dunedin to Otago Peninsula

    9. Dezember 2019 in Neuseeland ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

What a night... As we didn’t manage to do proper sightseeing yesterday we decided to stay at the freedom camping spot in the city instead to move to one of the holiday parks outside of Dunedin. In fact it‘s just a car park located between the train station (should mean sth already) and a main road. As we arrived on a Sunday, there was less traffic and we thought it can’t be that loud. It was ok, but more annoying were the other campers, who slamshut the port-a-loo (glad we have our own toilet 😁) doors and the walls of the campervans are on the thinner side... and sleeping with ear plugs next to a baby, which wakes up during the night is not the option... ok, noted: never again to camp in the middle of the city on a parking lot (our experience in Wellington should have been enough, I just guess that we didn‘t want to realize the truth 😂)

So the first stop of the day: coffee ☕️ & breakfast 🍳

We strolled through Dunedin and ended up at the Otago museum before we decided to leave Dunedin earlier than planned and heading to Otago peninsula instead.

We arrived at a cute little campground. After the last days with barely any amenities we needed to catch up. Never been happier before to use a hot water washing machine (hot water wash machines are not common here).

The main reason why we came to the Otago peninsula: Royal albatrosses and blue penguins. The latter we didn’t see, as we didn’t do a tour. We just drove to that albatross Center where we were greeted by hundreds of sea gulls. The parking lot‘s just next to their breeding zone, no surprise they‘re not too fond of the visitors. And lots of birds also mean lots of sh*t. 🙈

It was a quick out-grab a photo-back to the campervan. And enjoyed the flying royal albatrosses (wingspan up to 3m!) through the window. 😁

  • Otago Peninsula to Oamaru

    10. Dezember 2019 in Neuseeland ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

Next stop in Dunedin again: the former steepest road in the world. We didn’t dare driving there 😬

Also on the Agenda: Moeraki Boulder Beach. One would wonder, how it‘s possible to create these smooth round or sometimes eggshaped stones.

Oamaru: another opportunity to see blue pinguins. We therefore chose a campsite close to the blue penguins colony. Also next to it is a huge playground. Matilda was in heaven and not just her 😂 The old town of Oamaru reminds me somehow of the Netflix series Lemony Snicket. We‘re quite surprised and really liked the charme of the town.

A quick check on google maps (what would we do without google nowadays...) led us to a surprisingly delicious Italian restaurant. We were in food coma 😄

Since the penguins only return to their nest at dusk we had enough time to prepare ourselves (means: putting on extra layers) for the night. The original plan was to see the penguins at the colony, but as soon as we got closer we already heard voices in various languages through loudspeaker explaining the penguin life. We looked at each other and were like „are they serious“? On top they wanted to charge 40$ per adult. No thanks. So we went a bit back where we saw a couple of people before. Not long and the first penguin came out of the water and was kind of running to his nest hidden in den bushes. A bit later 7 fellas came and hid under the carriage. They acted like the penguins in the movie Madagascar. 😂 A few more came until we decided to return to our cozy campervan.

We walked a couple of meters and suddenly a penguin could be seen on the walkway. Looked left and we saw another one, probably waiting for him. While the first penguin waited a third one bumped into him. It was like: hey, what are you waiting for. Goooo! After a pause 🐧#3 started walking and suddenly paused, so 🐧 #1 bumped into #3. #2 at the bush must have thought 🤦🏻‍♀️😂😂😂😂

Almost at the campground we saw another 4 penguins. This time they crossed the street. They looked like the Beatles on the famous picture, just minus the crossing.

In comparison the blue penguins were running, while the yellow eyed penguin waddled.
