      128ème étape ~ Blegny

      Nous avons visité une ancienne mine de charbon qui n’est plus en service depuis plusieurs années maintenant.
      Bien que les lieux aient été un peu aménagés pour les visiteurs, on s’imagine tout de même les conditions inhumaines dans lesquels les mineurs travaillaient.
      Notre guide a été formée par un ancien mineur, elle nous a raconté des anecdotes, elle nous a bien expliqué comment se passait la vie dans les mines.
      Nous avons beaucoup aimé cette visite si instructive.
      Pour finir notre séjour en Belgique, nous sommes allés manger chez Din’Ô Burger, ils confectionnent les plus gros burgers d’Europe, nous vous laissons admirer la taille d’un “normal”. 😱
      Les patrons sont vraiment adorables, eux mêmes campings-caristes, nous avons beaucoup discuté après la fermeture.

      Doornik (franse grens)

      Zo, een volle dag... vanochtend vertrokken uit Lessen (nabij). Einddoel voor vandaag was Hornaing. Vandaag een mix van Garmin en de route op de telefoon, die ook veel meer stroom gebruikt. Een tocht met veel buiten de bebouwde kom, heerlijk dus. Omdat ik toch minimaal 1 keer per dag mijn credential moet stempelen een dorpje aan de route bezocht, Tongre-Notre-Dame of all places. Wat een mooie oude kerk.......maar waar krijg ik nu een stempel..? In de directe omgeving een huis...aangebeld (trekbel) en een op leeftijd zijnde non, incognito gekleed, deed open. Ik liet haar mijn credential zien en het was duidelijk voor haar waarvoor ik kwam. Ik werd uitgenodigd en er werd een verse pot koffie gezet.. enkele nonnen schoven aan en er werd gesproken over de wonderen die daar waren verricht (medaille miraculeuse) werd het genoemd en voor ik het wist kreeg ik een medaillon.... Na een 2e kop wilde ik vertrekken maar de soep was klaar.... of ik een kop wilde... tja oui natuurlijk... de gepureerde soep bevestigde de leeftijd van de bewoners.... 😀 😀 maar werd in dankbaarheid aanvaard. Zo, tijd voor een kaarsje natuurlijk en wat foto's van de kerk en door.... Ik werd echt uitgezwaaid en mijn sollicitatieformulier heb ik niet ingevuld.. 😀
      Na een behoorlijke tijd fietsen toch nog even een check garmin /telefoon..... toch enige discripantie waarvan akte dus werd het een beetje bijsturen. Ik was dus mijn eindbestemming van die dag voorbij dus dan maar door naar het eindpunt van traject 1, Doornik of Tournai zoals de Fransen zeggen. Toch een pittig tochtje maar rond 17.45 uur ingecheckt. Morgen iig weer een stempel halen en dan de Franse grens over richting St Quentin.

      Liege

      A very very wet day. Followed the Meuse cycle path over the undefined border into Belgium and onwards. Dinnat was pretty cool and apparently where Alberto Sax- of saxophone fame- is from: who said there are no famous Belgians? The valley became more gorge like with limestone cliffs , and the occasional chateau- but it was really too wet to notice- or even care -after a while. Found a great cycling cafe for lunch at the bottom of the Mur de Huy- at 19% I'll leave that for another day. Reluctant to get back on the bike into the persistent rain- and justified as the path deteriorated in and out of industrial complexes and back streets all the way to Liege. Whilst rushing to get to a bike shop before it closed an 80 year old tripped up over a kerb and tangled himself up in my bike , breaking his hip in the process!! After we sorted all that out( impressive ambulance response times here) I found my warm showers host, Mark and had a lovely evening talking about Tibet, Trappist beers and Marillion!Read more

      Luxembourg... Take 2!

      We are on our way to Luxembourg. During this trek, we will be touching ground in Germany, France, Belgium, and Luxembourg.

      Some highlights to expect...
      -Pictures in all 4 countries in honor of Uncle Paul.
      -Lunch in Luxembourg.
      -Visiting my great great uncle, James (Jim) H. Goehl, in the Lorraine American Cemetery and Memorial where he was buried after dying in Europe during WWII. As far as my grandma and I know, I may be the first relative to visit his final resting site. It is an honor to visit and pay tribute to him.

      *Side note: I have been feeling a bit under the weather so I took a COVID test just in case and it's negative. We think it's partially the "traveler's flu" and the pollen season. I've never really reacted to allergens all that badly in the states but Europe is next level. I had some warm water with lemon and honey and took some medication to soothe my throat. I shall power through! Too many non-refundable adventures await. 😅      Read more

      Am Ufer der Ambleve

      Warum fahren die Deutschen Wohnmobilisten eigentlich kaum nach Belgien? Wir wohnen nicht so weit weg von Belgien, daher waren wir hier schon oft unterwegs und sind immer wieder überrascht worden. So auch jetzt.
      Wir sind an der Ambleve in der Nähe von Spa auf dem Camping Eden. Der Name ist Programm.
      Der Campingplatz ist nach der verheerenden Flut vor 2 Jahren neu aufgebaut worden und liegt wunderbar ruhig direkt am Ufer der Ambleve. Überraschenderweise ist der Platz fast leer. Uns soll es recht sein      Read more

      Kayak down the Lesse

      Went for a quiet canoe trip down the river next to the camp site. Train trip 12k up river then paddled back. Found that lots of others had the same idea so it was a bit crowded. More like dodgem cars than canoes but great fun with some dramatic rapids. No sign of Health and Safety here!Read more

      Namur

      Heute ging es vom angenehm ruhigen CP mit dem Roller nach Namur. Das sind nur 17 km immer an der Maas entlang. Zuerst geht es auf die Zitadelle. Hier oben hat man natürlich eine tolle Sicht auf Fluss, Stadt und Umgebung. Heute ist ein großer Triathlon mit Zieleinlauf auf der Zitadelle, dementsprechend viel ist hier los. Mittlerweile kann man übrigens auch mit einer ganz neuen, modernen Seilbahn von der Innenstadt gemütlich hoch fahren. Die Zitadelle ist ein sehr großflächiges Gebiet und es lohnt sich sehr hier oben ein wenig herum zu spazieren. Aber auch die Innenstadt ist lohnenswert, erst recht wenn so tolles Sommerwetter ist wie heute. Zudem ist Markttag und ein französischer Markt rundet das Ambiente ab. Fazit: wunderbarRead more

      40 Jahre Freundschaft

      Ziemlich genau vor 40 Jahren haben wir uns hier in St. Vith kennengelernt und diese Freundschaft hat, auch über die große Distanz, all die vielen Jahre gehalten.
      Die ersten Jahre wurden elendslange Briefe geschrieben und mit der 🐌Post verschickt. Dann kam das Email und nun WhatsApp und trotzdem hat sich die Form unserer Briefe nicht wirklich geändert, eben jetzt elektronisch. Wir sind da beide halt etwas oldschool... Dazwischen haben wir uns alle 1 bis 2 Jahre gesehen. Die Treffen sind nun doch etwas seltener geworden aber wenn wir uns mal treffen ist es, als ob wir uns erst kürzlich gesehen hätten, denn der Gesprächs- und Diskussionsstoff geht uns nie aus. Und feiern tun wir auch ganz gerne gemeinsam.
      Für solche Freundschaften, wie mit Doro, bin ich sehr dankbar und freu mich schon auf die nächsten Jahrzehnte. 🥰      Read more

      Took advantage of the less good weather to travel a couple of hours westwards. Initially planned for somewhere in France but put off by the news of riots. Now near Tournai which we plan to explore tomorrow. Pitched at a near perfect Aire, La Ferme du Vert Marais, unusual for an aire as it has large pitches with hardstanding and grass.Read more

      Now that I've crossed over the border into Belgium, I think I can safely say, "God save the King, and down with the Republic." But honestly, although I do enjoy a good stab at the French, everyone I met in Northern France was absolutely lovely, even though the terrain was truthfully a little uninspiring. But can we hear it for England by the way. In my experience, Brits are often far too quick to dismiss our own country; either it's boring, it's expensive, or it's just plain not worth an adventure, especially outside of national parks. Personally, I love hiking in middle England; terrorising golf courses, touring battered castles, and grazing the diverse nature of the English countryside will forever be my jam. There's adventure to be found everywhere in life, and that even includes the pancake flats of Hauts-de-France. Adventure is a mindset, never a place. But back to today; the journai to Tournai was honestly a very easy one, and I barely feel like I've done any walking the past 3 days at all really. I shan't complain though, this evening I've enjoyed exploring the moody, cobblestoned gothic streets of Tournai, a very picteresque city steeped in history, which has also treated me with a monster kebab and a hostel for the night.Read more
