Ouro PretoNovember 7 in Brazil
We decided to move away from the coast to explore the state of Minas Gerias. Unfortunately the bus schedules and sheer size of this country (places that look right next to each other are an 8 hours bus ride away!) meant we only had time to visit one town, so we settled on Ouro Preto. Whereas Paraty was where gold was transported to enrich Portugal, Ouro Prero was a town where it was mined.
It's a beautiful place that even the rain couldn't diminish and we spent most of our time wandering the streets. Now this is harder than it sounds, as at every turn there was a steep hill to content with - a great work out for the thighs!
We also visited a mine, which despite the tour being in Portuguese was very entertaining. Mainly for Kat, as I struggled to get through the tiny passageways. They clearly didn't have miners over 6ft with dodgy knees...
On our second day we were due to get the night bus to Sampa so had the day to explore further. However it was raining heavily and the hostel kindly let us keep our room all day. So... travel planning day it is! Also tight purse-strings Kat had done the maths and we were at risk of needing to re-mortgage the flat if we continued to spend at the current rate, so I wasn't even allowed lunch. Thank god that hostel offered a free breakfast!
Just as we were about to head of to the bus station the owner asked if we were getting a taxi, no way Kat would allow that expenditure, so he offered us a lift in his car. I'm loving this Brazilian hospitality!Read more
