Back in Croatia. Spending the night in Trogir just north of Split. Traffic was very intense, couldn't get the GPS to work properly and the GPS voice yelled all the street names at us in Croatian😡but finally found where we are staying.

Trogir is set within medieval walls on a tiny island, linked by bridges to both the mainland and to the far larger Čiovo Island. I have included an aerial photo of Trogir which shows it off really well. There are about 10 churches and numerous buildings from the 13th century, the city walls are 15th Century, the Fortress Kamerlengo 15th Century, Duke's Palace and Cathedral 13th Century!
This is obviously a party destination for a lot of the 18-35 year olds cruising along the Dalmation Coast - the harbour is full of huge power yachts which are full of young party animals dancing the night away. Once the restaurants start to empty from the dinner crowds the lights along the harbour dim and the party music starts. Oh to be young again 😆 Tomorrow we head to Zadar.Read more

    June 10, 2017 in Croatia

So on our last day in Kastela, we visited Trogir, another UNESCO World Heritage site a bus ride in the other direction.

Whilst I run the risk of sounding spoilt with lovely places - I am - the main attraction is the Old Town. To my uncultured eye, this is a lot like both Dubrovnik and Split. White marble roads, attractive stone buildings, by the sea and maze-like small streets.

Both the highlight and the lowlight was climbing the Cathedral Tower. It gives you a "sweeping view" of the town, but I couldn't experience these as I developed some kind of height fright half way up the bell tower so let Stuart continue whilst I held the handrail in a vicelike grip.. If you look at the photo he took you will see me in the corner holding on for dear life!

Also the Cathedral has a ornate door featuring Adam and Eve, who I am copying. Also in the Chapel - dedicated to St John of Trogir - there is a man popping his head out upside down and for all the googling I cannot work out who he is or what he is doing.. too cheap to buy a guidebook :)

So possibly good timing to be moving on tomorrow to see some different sights altogether!

    Farewell evening in Trogir

    June 29, 2017 in Croatia

After paddling back from Zlarin island we had just a short drive to our hotel at Trogir, a UNESCO-protected city. The city was founded by the Greeks around the 3rd century BC. The oldest structures there now date to the 13th century, and some parts of the medieval city walls are still there, along with its fortress and a beautiful church. We gathered together for our last group dinner at the open air restaurant at our hotel.Read more
