      After some nights in more or less budget AirBnBs' we decided to have one night in a more exclusive place to sleep. So we spend the night in a jungle hotel.

      19.08 - El Valle No. 2

      Heute hatten wir wahrscheinlich das beste, günstigste Frühstück, der ganzen Reise. Und das an einem so abgelegenen Ort wie El Valle. In einem kleinen „Restaurant“, Bistro, Treffpunkt mit Essmöglichkeit gab es sehr gutes Rührei mit Brot, Tomaten, Gemüse & Käse. Dazu Empanadas. Aber auch Phils Joghurt mit einheimischen Früchten sah sehr gut aus.
      Nach diesem Genuss, ging es auf Wanderung. Wir wollten zu einem nahen Wasserfall wandern. Dort angekommen, war er leider trotz Regenzeit ausgetrocknet. Aber halb so schlimm. Unsere neuen Gefährten - die zwei Hostelhunde - genoßen den Spaziergang und wir ihre Gesellschaft.
      Nach dem schweißreichen Gang, gings direkt in den Pool zum Abkühlen. Mit ein wenig Mango im Bauch gings wieder zum einzigartigen, menschenleeren Strand.
      Am Abend kochten wir uns noch ein paar Nudeln und genossen eine sternenreiche Nacht.      Lue lisää

      El Valle

      Two nights in Santa Barbara de Samana, two nights in an Airbnb with a wonderful view of the coast, the city and the ocean ... Two nights with a bar and pool billiard just on the other side of the street. To bad our Airbnb didn't had glass in the windows so there was no noise isolation. Every night party till 3 in the morning.

      Soooo we were in serious need of a more calm and relaxed area for her birthday. 🌿🌳🌧️ We canceled our last night in Santa Barbara and just went 13km north of Samana in the little town 'El Valle'. Nearly no tourist, no mobile coverage and all accomodations in the middle of tropical rainforest and yes we had rain. 😉      Lue lisää

      18.08 - El Valle

      Ausgecheckt, standen wir samt Gepäck am Straßenrand. Keine 10min vergingen und ein Guagua kam vorbei und nahm uns in Richtung Samana mit. Tiefer rein in die Halbinsel. Nach ca 1,5 Stunden waren wir auch schon da. In Samana. Nach einer kurzen Einkaufstour für Früchte und Wasser, suchten wir uns je ein Moto und fuhren mit je zwei Rucksäcken, zwei Mangos, einer Ananas und einem 4liter Wasserkanister auf dem Rücken nach El Valle. Dort wartete schon Panni, eine ungarische Freundin auf uns, die wir in Santo Domingo kennengelernt haben. Der Weg dort hin war jedoch alles andere als kurz und entspannt. Auf sehr „wilden“ Straßen ging es einmal vom Süden der Insel, vom Karibischen Meer, zum Norden der Insel, zum Atlantik. Fahrtzeit ca. 20min. Und wo wir dann waren, war alles andere als touristisch erschlossen. Es war die naturbelassene „Einöde“, die wir suchten. Lediglich ein paar Häuser an der Hauptstraße waren Indiz auf Menschenleben hier.
      Unser Hostel, das Hostel, wo Panni arbeitet, war einzigartig. Schaut euch einfach die Bilder an. Genau, wie der Strand, die Bucht, zu der man innerhalb von 5min laufen konnte. Bloß ein paar Fischerboote lagen am Strand. Mehr nicht.
      Nach einer Strandsession, samt Klippenspringen, ging es auf Kokosnussjagd - erfolgreich. Mit 4 Kokosnüssen ging es zurück zum Hostel. Unser Abendessen war gesichert. Gebratene Ananas mit gegrillter Kokosnuss. Dazu ein bisschen frische Ananas und frische Kokosnuss.
      Zum Sonnenuntergang zeigte Panni uns noch einen Lostplace. Einen Ort, über den Palmen von El Valle. Und dort endete ein sehr, sehr guter Tag unserer Reise.

      Playa El Valle - how locals are fishing

      After a night with heavy rain fall the water at 'Playa El Valle' looked a bit muddy from the distant view of our infinity pool. Nevertheless we went there to enjoy a day at the beach before starting our trip to 'Las Terrenas'.

      Arriving at the beach we saw some local guys rope pulling looking as if the ocean is the enemy. After repeating pulling - let loose - pulling every 15m of the beach a second group arrived at our part of the beach coming from the other side. The ropes there were pulling were the end of a trawl net.
      The whole village came together and worked together to catch the fishs for the day.      Lue lisää

      Sam'mal

      Nein, es heißt Samana und liegt in der DomRep 😅

      Heute ist tendern angesagt. Das heißt, wir liegen nicht im Hafen, sondern haben den Anker geworfen. Mit den Tenderbooten wird man dann an Land gebracht.

      Dort mieten wir uns ein Taxi für den Tag und machen uns auf den Weg zu einem Wasserfall im Dschungel.
      Mir wird leider ziemlich schnell klar, dass ich dort schon mal war 😄 vor fünf Jahren. Und es hat sich einfach nichts verändert 🙈 es sind sicher auch die selben Jungs, die hier den Wasserfall runter springen 🤣

      Dreist ist nur, dass sie hier an jeder Ecke nochmal Geld verdienen wollen. Bei den Kokosnüssen werden auch wir schwach ☺️🥥      Lue lisää

      Welcome to Samaná, Dominikanische Rep.

      Den nächsten, eher kürzeren Stopp machten wir in Samaná (offiziell Santa Bárbara de Samaná), der Hauptstadt der gleichnamigen Provinz im Nordosten der Dominikanischen Republik. Da uns hier keiner der angebotenen Ausflüge zusagte und die Liegezeit sowieso recht kurz gehalten wurde, entschieden wir uns, auf eigene Faust loszuziehen - was scheinbar viele Mitreisende genauso sahen.

      Mit dem Tenderboot ging es gegen 09:00Uhr zum Hafen. Dort folgten wir der Uferstraße linkerhand, wimmelten alle Einheimischen ab, die uns einen ihrer Ausflüge und ihrer Souvenirs andrehen wollten und liefen zur Puente de Escondida, dem Wahrzeichen der Stadt. Dabei handelt es sich um eine etwa 60m lange Brücke, die das Festland mit den kleinen, unbewohnten Inseln Cayo Linares und Cayo Vigia verbindet. Da außer uns kein weiteres Kreuzfahrtschiff an diesem Tag vor Ort war, konnten wir den doch recht anstrengenden Weg treppauf und -ab bei wenig Besucheraufkommen genießen.
      Auf dem Rückweg zum Tender-Hafen schlenderten wir vorbei am Waldenkmal und -museum (im Januar/Februar soll die Stadt voller Touristen sein, die Wale 🐳 auf dem offenen Meer beobachten wollen) und bunten Häuserzeilen - ein eher verschlafen wirkender Ort, an dem die Uhren noch anders zu gehen scheinen.

      Nach dem obligatorischen Cocktail des Tages 🍹 fielen wir müde ins Bett, an den nächsten zwei Tagen stehen weitere Landgänge und Ausflüge an.      Lue lisää

      Segeln und Schnorcheln in Samana ☀️

      Heute haben wir uns gegen die Bacardi Insel und für einen Ausflug mit dem Katamaran entschieden- zum Glück!! Die Bacardi Insel war mit mehr als 200 Touristen überbevölkert während wir auf dem Katamaran eine kleine Gruppe waren und neben dem Schnorcheln 🤿 auch noch Bachata und Merengue getanzt haben 😊 nach einigen “Vitaminen” (lokaler Rum 😉) konnte sogar mein Schatzi seine Hüften locker machen ☺️🕺

      Achja, den traumhaften Sonnenaufgang 🌅 heute Morgen konnten wir vom Balkon unserer Kabine genießen 😊      Lue lisää

      Wind meter dies

      Another magical day at sea even though the wind died down (not forecasted) and we had to turn on the engine. We changed course so we are not directly downwind but a wind angle of 125 (and bearing of 273).
      With the light winds we decided to experiment with the whisker pole again and unfurling the geneoa through it. We lounged on the deck for awhile, chatting about past and future sailing plans.
      Then decided to do some naked sailing as it was so hot and no wind! We put out the fishing pole and we’re getting ready to cool off with a bucket bath when a fish jumped on. I reeled the MahiMahi (also known as dolphin or Dorado) in my birthday suit, then proceeded to pour rum on the gills to kill her, and under Brian’s tutelage I cleaned and and fillet the fish. So much meat… and we even preserved the roe.
      After all that we finally took a bucket shower. The winds were starting to get swirly and I was questioning whether the wind indicator was working as it was not reading the same as the vain. Our wind speed indicator had stopped. We still set the sails to the wind indicator, but could not get wing on wing, so gave up.
      We had a beautiful MagiMahi meal with quinoa salad and decided to sleep soon after. The wind had died considerable and we were only travelling at 3-4km it’s, making our ETA 2-3am.
      Instead of taking shifts, we set the radar and AID alarms and both slept, waking every hour to check on the situation.
      When we hit the waypoint, we still had another 5-8miles to travel, and follow nav bouys into our anchorage, just outside the marina.
      The first time we dropped anchor, I felt (only using a flashlight) that we were really close to shore. We lifted and went another 100feet out.
      Once settled we headed to sleep. Brian was out for much longer then I was.      Lue lisää

      Marina Puerto Bahia

      Coffee was ready by the time Brian got up and we decided to contact the marina and make our way there tout suite.
      Not knowing what to expect or which side we would be coming in on, we got lines ready on either side and Brian walked me through the process…. He also asked for dinghy help. As we came in, a worker came aboard and took the lines and made the process easier.
      Once docked and settled, we got some food and proceeded to start the checkin process.
      You have to clear through immigration, coustoms and Navy (who boards the boat). I was a bit concerned as we didn’t check into Puerto Rico as we were supposed too, but it wasn’t questioned or a problem. Shepard (navy guy) came aboard and played Brian’s guitar and chatted (he spoke English too… which many do not). I connected the power and then Brian checked and added the second unit.
      We explored the premises and were going to do laundry but there were already loads going. We went back to the pool area but decided to jump in the ocean. We swam to the dock and to the water trampoline, then to the net which goes all the way down to the bottom…. Knowing that it likely means to keep certain sea creatures out…. We took a look and decided to proceed beyond it, to the small beach around the corner where Flamingo’s 🦩 in all there regality pranced about. They left the area when we emerged onshore, and we sat on a branch and watched them, marvelling at our privilege to see an experience such sights.
      We walked to the dock, and then jumped off, swam back to the pool area where we had left our things unattended, took a quick outdoor shower and headed back to the boat.
      There are three restaurants on the premise, and we went to the one attached to the building on the main floor. It was a challenge to make them understand Celiac, but Brian talked to the chef and we were able to order a meal, although not something I would get again (steak on top of coconut lentils) and salad.
      We chatted about how to get a new wind instrument (Brian called a place that had it, but not sure it would ship it in time - Sea Wire)….. bed early to catch up on sleep.      Lue lisää
