Lagoons 🦩

We were picked up before sunrise in a minibus and headed to the Chile Bolivia border. We got there a full hour before the border opened, but it soon became apparent by how many vans were behind us that it would be a slow process. We got out of the parked bus to have breakfast as the sun came up. It was freezing cold due to the 4,700 meter elevation. We chatted to a German woman in our bus who unfortunately was feeling unwell due to the altitude. Finally about two hours later we exited Chile. We drove through no man’s land to the entrance to Bolivia, which involved another queue. At this point our stuff was transferred to the jeep that we’d be in for the next three days, along with the German woman Claudia. Our driver does not speak English but speaks Spanish slowly and patiently.
We set off in a convoy of 4x4s across landscape that looked like Mars. There wasn’t really roads, just paths in the dirt, and it was a very bumpy ride. Claudia had gotten worse and was really struggling with headache and nausea. We stopped at a lagoon made white by borax and other minerals in the water. You could feel how thin the air was and walking took a lot of exertion.
The next lagoon was green and then we stopped in an area called Dali’s desert because of the landscape’s resemblance to a Salvador Dali painting. Then we got to swim in a hot spring. We talked to an Australian couple. Unfortunately at this point Claudia was unable to get out of the car. We felt terrible for her and also bummed that we weren’t experiencing the social aspect that it seemed many other cars were. We had lunch with our guide and continued to some geysers. Our final stop was at the famous red lagoon that had loads of flamingos in it.
We stopped for the night in Villa Mar. The hotel was basic but we were surprised with a private bathroom which was nice. There was one other car from our route staying there— the other cars must have dispersed throughout the town. We tried to chat with them at dinner but the hotel staff wouldn’t let us sit with them, for unclear reasons.Read more
Traveler Yikes! I know a tiny bit about altitude sickness and just reading this makes me worried about Claudia. I hope all was well for all of you and you were able to enjoy what sounds like a fairly intense adventure.
Traveler She was very ill, I was very concerned she would need hospital treatment. But she improved the second day!
Traveler You were right to be concerned. So glad she improved. Phew!
