  • My story so far in numbers

    September 27, 2017 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 19 °C

So this sounded way cooler in my head but here's my story so far, in numbers 1 through to 10 😂...hope you like it!!

    1:
Times I have completely unpacked and repacked my backpack (I know, not bad for me right)
Of the seven Wonders of the Modern World visited - the Golden Gate Bridge
Train trips taken (a monster of a train journey at that)
Room keys lost (was bound to happen at some point right)
Phone disasters (forgetting your passcode is so not the one ha)

    2:
Very tired legs (the steep hills in San Francisco are not helping)
Chicken instant noodle pots eaten (don't judge me...they were very tasty and they were free)
Taxis taken (uber is my friend in America)
Lengthy bus journeys (to Kentucky and back to Chicago)
Flights taken (to Iceland and from there to Chicago)
Washing loads done (well technically only 1 done by me lol)
Books read (After Hello and The Alchemist)

    3:
Weeks and one day that I've been away
Weeks and two days until I turn 32 (depress me much ha)

    4:
    Hostels stayed in

    5:
Weeks until I fly to Hawaii (can't complain at that one)

    6:
Different beds that I've slept in (still miss my one at home though ha!)

    7:
Times (ok maybe more) that I've wondered what the meaning of this thing we call life is (what if the Hokey Cokey really is what it's all about 😂)

    8:
Still the number of hours sleep that I like to get a night (haha)

    9:
Weeks and I'll be in Fiji :-)

    10:
Weeks and I'll be in Australia :-)
US states visited or passed through on this trip (Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Iowa, Nebraska, Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, Nevada & California)

  • Chicago Sept 2017

    September 23, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

Hi everyone, it's your favourite travel blogger here :-)

I just wanted to say first of all a big thank you for the love and comments on the first blog, it means the world to me that you're following me on my journey...so thank you and I hope you keep reading!!

Right, where did we get to...oh yeah, so I was on my way by bus to Chicago. Well it's safe to say that after the journey I'm on now, I'll never (ever!!) moan about an 8 hour bus ride again ...as this update comes to you from a 54 hour train ride...yep you read that right! This trip, on board the California Zephyr train, started in Chicago and now I have about 2 hours to go until I get to San Francisco (& yes of course I'm counting ha) !! So we just got a "fresh air" break in Sacramento and it is hot and sunny here in California so that has cheered me up no end. I decided to take this trip because it's 'one of the most beautiful train rides in North America' but then sadly a few days before leaving Chicago I found out that due to track work it was being rerouted between Denver and Salt Lake City. So that's left me feeling rather disappointed, as I think there's a lot I've missed out on seeing. I've made my peace with it now though (well I'm getting there)...I did get to see some amazing scenery and I've met some really great people along the way...plus it's given me the chance to give the legs a rest, read a book (cover to cover too ha), to listen to music and to catch up on some sleep so I'm happy.

Right, I'm jumping back to my five days in Chicago now. So Chicago turned out to be a lot of fun and that was the one place I was a bit worried about, a little girl in a big city and all that but after just a few days there I was navigating getting from where I was staying to downtown Chicago like a pro. On my first day I got out to Lincoln Park Zoo and followed the beaches along Lake Shore Drive...it was beautiful to see a place with the best of both worlds - the beaches along the lakefront and an amazing city to go with. I met a local guy in the afternoon who ended up changing his plans to show me around Chicago...but then a plan to go for a few drinks and dinner turned in to an evening of more drinks, playing pool and one too many tequila shots...I was one hungover Fran the next day ha. So as you can imagine I had a very lazy start to my second day but in the afternoon I got chatting to a girl from Melbourne and we ended up going out to get food and catching a comedy show in the hostel. The Monday was my big 'try and do everything Chicago has to offer' day and so I saw Buckingham Fountain, Millennium Park and Cloud Gate Plaza (the silver bean!), had a drink at Cindy's Rooftop bar, ate a burger at Shake Shack and I went to the observation 'sky deck' at Willis Tower. It was a lot of fun! On the Tuesday I got to go to Navy Pier and an open mic night with a fellow Brit from the hostel and on my last day in Chicago I got on the water taxi from Michigan Ave. to Chinatown for an early dinner - that was yum and then some! So I hope I've done a good job of selling Chicago to you ha 😀.

Right, now I'm off to go have some fun in San Francisco. I have 9/ 10 days before I need to get to LA for my tour of California, which starts on 3rd Oct. More on that to follow...OBVS!!

I'll catch up with you again very soon...

...& l'll be updating more posts with pictures over the next few days :-) ...you lucky things you!!

    Lots of love, me x x x

  • Day 1

    Reykjavik

    September 5, 2017 in Iceland ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

Hi everyone and welcome to the first blog of my travels...sorry for the little wait there ;-)

So as I write this I'm finding it hard to believe that I've not even been away for two weeks yet, it seems like my flight from Gatwick to my first stop in Reykjavik in Iceland was a long time ago now.

So it's been quite the adventure so far and today I'm on a bus (no, not like the ten minute ones we all know and love...this one is more like 8 hours) to Chicago. I did land in Chicago at the beginning of this week but left the following day to spend a few days in Louisville, Kentucky, to see and spend time with my friend Sally...it's been a blast so thank you Sally for having me...& for doing my washing ;-)

So I think I can only add a maximum of 6 photos to each post on here but I'll update several so you can see the places I've been to.

Right, before that, I'm going back to the beginning of my trip now so you can read a little bit about what I've been doing and how I've been getting on...I'm sure most of you are curious, as was I!!...about how I'd feel staying in hostels not hotels, living out of a backpack, travelling around on my own and to not always being able to have an emergency pack of biscuits on me (something I've been caught out with today) to name just a few haha.

So I had a great first week in Iceland...if you haven't been, it's definitely one to add to your holiday list. In the 6 days I was there I met some really great people with some really interesting stories and I got to do five of the 'most Icelandic' things to do there; whale watching, a northern lights tour (but they didn't make an appearance for me...I have a picture that proves otherwise though ;-) lol), the golden circle tour (you can't miss out on this one - though you will need the Icelandic Krona equivalent of £1.50 to go to the toilet - so for those of you who really know me that was one expensive day out ha), a trip to Blue Lagoon and one to a local swimming pool where at both of those places the water is a warm 38 degrees. So I suggest you get to packing and book the next flight there ha.

Right, now the fun bit...how I have been finding it all. So I was lucky enough to have an easy journey to Iceland...I got to watch a film on the plane (Crazy Stupid Love..& it's with big thanks to Ryan Gosling that I was cheered up after an emotional goodbye to Mum & Dad) whilst sipping on a free tea. Then it turned out that I was able to buy a return pass on the plane for a transfer service to and from the airport and the hostel I was staying at (they made it a bit too easy for me didn't they ha). Then as we landed I got talking to a really nice girl from Boston who's going to give me some tips for Hawaii and she took the picture everyone has to have of 'oh look at me having just landed in my first destination' ha.

So when I got to my hostel in Reykjavik I thought, seeing as it wasn't very late, that I'd have my pick of the beds but oh no...in my mixed 6-bed dorm I had to take the only one left, the top bunk right next to the door and when I got back to the room after a wander about town I found the room in darkness and everyone in it asleep. This isn't good, especially when you haven't even got anything out of your backpack and you don't know whether or not you're allowed to turn the light on... but I found a way to make it work...I dragged my bag to the social room that was next door ha. Luckily from there though I found it quite easy to adjust to hostel way of life. I did have to watch though as a girl in the top bunk next to me smacked her head on the ceiling...it looked brutal and I'm glad I escaped that one!!

So then all was going well and it was my last night in Reykjavik! But then at around 10 pm local time a terrible something happened...I disabled my phone by putting in the wrong passcode too many times. Well let's just say it all went a bit downhill from there. I was so busy trying to get that sorted in the morning that I forgot that I couldn't just check out in my own time and when I got back to the room from having a shower my key card to the room didn't work...lovely jubbly. But even though that happened and I felt like I was lost without my phone I realised that I could handle all these little things that were happening just fine! & then someone must've known I needed a little treat because when I got to my hostel in Chicago I was upgraded to a private room...what a result! And with the help of my good friend Sally, I've now got the phone back up and running whoop ;-) hehe!!

Okay so that's enough rambling for now...when I get to Chicago I've got 5 days there to get out and do some exploring and then I'm going by train (oh this one's days not hours) over to the west coast. Watch out California, I'm coming for you soon...

    I'll post again very soon...

    ....lots of love, Fran x x x
