      Au revoir, Biarritz! 🇫🇷

      May 10 in France ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

Yesterday was our last full day. We had a lovely breakfast at the hotel. Fresh raw salmon, croissant, De Gateau Basque (it’s kinda like a custard and cake pie, very good) fresh juices cappuccino and fried eggs the French way. I mention the breakfast because it was very different than what I would get at hotel in the states.

We took a walking tour with Allan, a local Basque man. He explained a little history and climate change.

I left the tour before it ended to enjoy a massage at the hotel, saltwater pool swim and hot steam sauna.

Afterwards, I walked up the coast to see the view and thought I could get a good snack. However, I didn’t realize that every restaurant & cafe is closed at 2pm and doesn’t re-open until 7:30pm. I walked around and found the cafes full with people slowly sipping a glass of wine or lemonade bubble water and no food served.

As the clouds and fog lifted I saw the Pyrenees mountains in the background of the gorgeous views. I thought about what that will be like walking up those big beasts. I said don’t think about it just do it. Zoom in on the pictures and you can see the mountains.

Some of the places I stopped on my walk were the church Sainte-Eugénie Church of Biarritz. It is big and beautiful.

Plage du Port Vieux, an ocean pool where sunbathers come to relax with out having rough water if the open sea.

Playa De Biarritz. A swiming and surfing beach.

I was pretty hungry by the time 6:30pm and found a small custard dessert shop that sold these tiny custard balls, a tiny store that sold wine, chorizo, cheese, bread and canned pate’. I bought it and brought it to the hotel for a snack before dinner. Food is non-existent during the closed hours. I focused on the scenery and found the oasis of the dessert shop and small neighborhood store.

Met up with Amy and walked back over to the warf and had a nice dinner for sunset with some local oysters and razor back clams and local white wine. The sun set around 9:45pm.

We stumbled on a tiny nightclub about 1,000 sq ft. Had one drink and danced to Crystal Waters - gypsy! Fun!

Earlier in the day Allan our tour guide spoke about desire. He said if you desire what you don’t have you will always suffer And if you do get what you desire, it is only temporary. Attachment is not the way to live life. Detachment with love, appreciation and gratitude is to live life. Be here in the now and desire what you have.

On our last night in Biarritz I started feeling loss. Feeling how sad it was we were leaving this nice “ comfortable “ situation. I was attached to the comfort and certainty of this situation. Resisting what was ahead and unknown. Then I went and remembered the conversation with Allan and shifted my thinking to how great it was that I got to spend three days here and take care of my body with Sauna and pool. Sample French & Basque culture. Swim in the ocean on the other side of the world.

No loss, no sadness of leaving this place. Only happiness I got to experience it.

Today we pack up and head to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, France 🇫🇷 to prepare of our walk on the El Camino De Santiago. I squeezed in an ocean cold plunge, hot sauna

      Pintxo Eguna

      May 4 in France ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

      PAVILLION DU PHARE

      May 8 in France ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

We made a 15 minute walk up to the Biarritz lighthouse Phare for panoramic views of the bay. Swam in pool to loosen up muscles and hot sauna. Ordered a lovely crepe and sunset walk. Walked along the bay to take in the scenery. The days are super long. Sunrise is at 6:48AM and sunset is at 9:20PM. My body is starting to get adjusted to time change and jet lag.Read more

I see the light Phare de Biarritz

      May 8 in France ⋅ ⛅ 61 °F

Tina and I have been enjoying our visit with a great breakfast, a spa circuit in the sauna, pools, and hamam. Our philosophical history basque tour was cancelled, so we walked up to the lighthouse, complete with a hilltop bar to enjoy a few drinks overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. It's a beautiful sunny day and life is good!Read more

      Hul i teltet

      May 5 in France ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

      Roncesvalles

      May 15, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

OUT!

      Day 3

      August 26, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Well… payback for saying “ I don’t care what happens on day one as long as my flight isn’t cancelled “… Mmmm.. day one.. gorgeous views crossing the Pyrenees.. I think not!! Very wet and foggy.. but .. YES.. I’m so happy, felt ace, was worried I’d started too late as I thought I ought to have breakfast on the first day so didn’t set off until 8am…passed soo many people, no idea when they must have set off!!
Sun cream definitely was the priority.. it was damp to start, but then very wet and foggy 😶‍🌫️.. a bit cold, but too wet to add anything .. massive thank you to Hannah for my amazing jacket ❤️
Basically, I really enjoyed the whole walk, but would love to have seen the amazing views that there must be fog free.. I overtook people the whole way which was unexpected, but getting to Ronscesvslles by lunchtime means I know I don’t need to start any earlier.. one lady asked if I’d been running.. how rude!!!
Hotel found, shower, Kip ( I’m old ok !! ) Big girl pants on and off for a beer on my own I go…

    • The Second Day Was Tough!

      August 31, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 61 °F

It was a tough climb, the descent was tougher. The steepness of the descent propelled you forward, and the weight of your pack pulled on your balance. Going down sideways, as well as traversing back and forth were very helpful tips from one of my newest Camino friends, Ali!

The other challenge that complicated the descent was how wet the leaves and rocks were. Concentrating on not falling took a great deal of energy! I am so happy we all made it safely to Roncesvalles, Spain! 🇪🇸

After dinner, I attended the Pilgrim Mass! I have attended all the Pilgrim Masses thus far. It is so beautiful after mass, the priest calls all pilgrims up for a special blessing!

I thanked God for a safe descent!

Day 14 SJPP to Roncesvalles, 25 kms

      October 14, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Today’s path on the Route Napoleon over The Pyrenees, from France to Spain, can only be described as glorious.

It’s a long climb up to 1450m and then a steep descent. And after the first 8 kms there are no facilities. The weather can play a factor and can change quickly, for the worse. That’s what we had in 2014 - rain, icy winds and, finally, hail. It was challenging and we saw nothing.

Today, thankfully, a very different story. We left SJPP at 7am, and arrived at Roncesvalles at 2pm. We started early because rain was forecast for the afternoon. But our weather angel took care of us and the rain did not arrive (until this evening) and we walked in to Roncesvalles in sunshine.

I don’t think the photos (and video) can do justice to the feeling of walking on this stunning path. But … can give an idea at least.

      Over the Pyrenees

      April 3 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 45 °F

Wow. Did not expect today’s initial hike to be so hard. It was 15 miles and took 7 hours… it was like setting your treadmill on 15 for the incline and doing that straight for 8 hours. Tough day!!

I know three things about this Camino journey: 1) I’m going to finish in better shape than I started. 2) I’m going to have to get comfortable being in my own sweat all day long (gross!) & 3) I will be sunburned even though I’m being careful (applied sunblock 4 times today)
