      Radtour Dordogne

      March 16, 2023 in France ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

      Siege!

      September 2, 2023 in France ⋅ ☁️ 27 °C

The castle at Castelnaud-La-Chapelle was for centuries considered nearly unassailable. It was built on bedrock so it could not be undermined. There were steep cliffs on 3 sides. Its defenses oriented to the other side . It had a well in a deep water-table so it had ample supplies of water. It just needed to have enough food on hand.

One thing we learned today is that castles were rarely destroyed in a siege because they were considered too valuable. Each side weighed its strength against the others then if the defenders thought the castle could be taken they would surrender it in exchange for their lives and some cash.

The trebuchets are full size replicas created from various sources as none survived very long.

OK that part was written by Dan and now I'm taking over ...

The castle changed hands 7 times during the Hundred Years war between the English and the French. It finally ended up in French hands during the seige of 1442.

Dan really enjoyed this place especially the demonstration of how the catapult worked. And what about me? I enjoyed the wine I had as a reward for enduring this!

      Canoë et Vélo

      September 6, 2023 in France ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

One of the activities that we really wanted to do during our time in Souillac was to see some of the castles built into the cliffs above the Dordogne river by kayaking or canoeing along it.

There was a kayak provider right next to the campground however they were starting to wind down given the summer season was finished and they no longer offered their service along the part of the river that we wanted to see. We searched for other providers and came across one in a nearby town called Roufillac. We managed to find a local bus that went to Roufillac and decided to head there to try to book a canoe for the following day, and maybe hire bikes to ride back. We were glad to see the bus, albeit 15 minutes late (considered on time in France), as there was no live departure info and we were worried it was going to show at all.

Twenty minutes later and we had reached Roufillac. We stopped for a quick cold drink at a cafe then went to the canoe and bike hire location. There we met a very friendly French guy who told us a good canoe route for the next day and allowed us to hire some bikes. He also chatted with us about his time in New Zealand on holiday a few years back. Equipped with bikes, we rode the 15 kms back to the campsite, stopping for a swim in the river along the way to cool down.

The next morning we woke early to ride back to the canoe and bike hire place in Roufillac so we could spend the day canoeing. The ride back was much nicer in morning while it was cooler. After dropping off the bikes, we were given some quick info and told that we would be picked up at La Roque Gageac, six hours downstream, at 4.30pm. It was another beautiful day and canoeing down the river was a great way to spend it. As we made our way along the river, we crossed several bridges and eventually the grassy river banks made way for rocky cliffs. Into some of these cliffs were built castles and homes, a truly incredible sight. Although hot and tiring at times, we stopped for plenty of swimming breaks and it was really cool experience overall.

After reaching La Roque Gageac, we met the driver who loaded the canoes onto the trailer (H: after getting the location wrong once which was a little stressful when you’ve been canoeing in 30+ degree heat all day!) and drove us back to their base in Roufillac. We caught the bus back to Souillac and made our way back to the campsite. After a long day, we decided we didn’t feel like cooking and had a great meal at the restaurant located at the campsite including a pizza with local Rocamadour cheese. -V

      Dag 8

      August 14, 2023 in France ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

      May 9, 2022 in France ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

      Dag 9

      August 14, 2023 in France ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

Read more

      Von Lyon nach Sarlat

      May 15, 2022 in France ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

Read more

      Sarlat

      May 16, 2022 in France ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

    • Day 14

      Sarlat, Beynac, Castelnaud La Chapelle

      October 14, 2022 in France ⋅ ⛅ 61 °F

Today was a very busy day. I am feeling pretty good, but still not a lot of energy. First order of business was to stop at a patisserie/boulangerie for a French breakfast and a baguette to go for later! Last night we had driven to the “old town” in Sarlat and wandered a little, so we were definitely ready to see more of the old area. Sarlat seems to be so much bigger and busier with more people than all the other places we have visited. Funny, but the population is only about 10,000! It is definitely more alive than the other villages we’ve visited. Suffice it to say, it’s an enchanting and quaint medieval town that’s actually divided into two with one side more aristocratic and the other more “common”. It’s fun to discover little arched passages and lanes that lead to new treasures to see. I must say that “duck” is what it’s all about here…everywhere! Foie gras and duck dishes are on every menu and many stores are devoted to duck products. There are many duck farms in the area, too.

After stopping at La Belle Époque for French onion soup, we decided to drive to nearby villages voted as “Most Beautiful Villages” that border the Dordogne River. In the villages of both Beynac (pop 552). and Castelnaud La Chapelle (pop 471) there is an imposing chateau perched at the top of steep cliffs and rocks that seem to reach to the sky with a tiny village built directly below it. Let me tell you, we were many narrow switchback roads, but I don’t think that I scared Elizabeth too many times…she did jump in her seat a few times! I don’t know why? Do you? Just enjoy the photos even though they can never truly capture the scene. As we drove through the countryside we spotted many smaller chateau high above the Dordogne River.

We returned to Sarlat for a drink before dinner and to work a little on our journals. I was sitting in a café with a glass of wine listening to the young staff laughing and singing to French songs being played loudly on the speaker. And I was in heaven! I was moving ever so slightly with the music and living in a moment of true joy and thinking… I AM IN FRANCE! The young waiter came over and asked if I wanted another wine. I told him in French what I wrote about them singing and laughing and how I was enjoying it so much. He very gently kissed my hand and treated me to a glass of wine! He came over again and asked me to dance…I passed! Hadn’t had enough to drink! It was all truly innocent, and they were at the end of the shift just enjoying their free time. I’ve never had such sweet attention! We closed the place down!

      Dag 11

      August 13, 2023 in France ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C
