      Oct 5 - Osijek, Croatia

      October 5, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

Our activity for today was a walking tour of Osijek (AH-see-eck) which is the fourth-largest city in Croatia, with a population of about 100,000. Our guide for today was Dora – she’s the best guide we’ve had so far. The drive was about 40 minutes. We remarked again at how incredibly flat the countryside is. Friends from Windsor say that it feels like home for them!

Our first stop was at a rather non-descript church, the Church of Our Lady. But inside, it is an explosion of Baroque design. Fortunately the church survived with only minor damage being sustained during the War of the Homeland in the early 1990s. We were treated to a short concert by a young lady, Martina, who played the piano and thrilled us with her exquisite voice.

A giant fortress was built in Osijek in the early 1700s by the Austrians. The fortress was like the Citadel in Halifax or the one in Quebec City, designed like a starburst with very thick walls. It had just four gates over a moat. The city sits on the Drava River, one of the main tributaries of the Danube River. The fortress would have held a small city of people within its walls.

Our tour concentrated on the part of Osijek located within what would have been the confines of the old fortress. It now holds a few residential buildings, but mainly high school and university buildings, administrative offices, museums, and lots of pubs and coffee houses.

Only one gate remains – the Water Gate – so named, because it was the one closest to the Drava River.

Trinity Square is surrounded by Baroque buildings in the nice, light colours that we have come to appreciate. The centre of the square is dominated by The Plague Column, a statue to the Holy Trinity, giving thanks for an end to the scourge. Turns out, that weasels (aka martens) finally killed off all the rats that were spreading the disease and that’s what brought about the end. No monuments to weasels.

We jumped back on the buses and went to Erdut where the war of independence finally concluded in 1995 with the signing of an agreement. We broke up into two groups for lunch. Our group enjoyed a lovely lunch made by Zlatica who runs a little restaurant and a B&B. She was widowed when she was just 46 years old. The property has been in the family for 350 years. They have been able to hang on to it despite all the political turmoil and fighting that the country has seen.

Lunch was fluffy rolls, garlic soup, noodles, chicken and chocolate cake, all washed down with wine, cherry brandy and Croation moonshine (slivovitz and wine).

Back to the ship – see the footprint about Aljmaš for the rest of the day.

      Kassel

      July 1, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

      for 41 €
Morgenmad var sædvanlig buffet med meget lækkert.
      Morgenen var dejlig og solrig.
      Nu afsted til Frankrig.

      June 13, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

      May 18, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

      November 11, 2022 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

      Ich sitze in der Bahn....

16 kg Last minute zusammengepacktes Gepäck dabei.

      July 16, 2021 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

      Finally in Tiberius

      February 28, 2018 in Germany ⋅ 🌙 14 °F

We finally arrived at the hotel at around 11pm. It was definitely a looong trip. The hotel had cold plates in our rooms. The rooms are nice. I am glad I don't need a hairdryer, because the one in our bathroom doesn't seem sufficient to try anyone's hair. Marian and I are all unpacke and ready for our first full day with Holy Land. Breakfast is at 6:30 am and we leave at 8 am. Tomorrow we visit Caesarea, Megiddo, Nazareth and Cana. It is after midnight and I need to go to bed so I will be ready for the day of touring (Marian is already asleep).Read more

Docked at Speyer and since it was Easter Sunday the guide led us to the Speyer Dom, which the world’s largest surviving Romanesque Church. Beautiful structure out of pink sandstone with unique crypts of German Kings and Queens. The carrolan rang for 10 minutes as the choir, congregation and church clergy arrived. After some photos we moved onto the Technik Museum with all kinds of transportation examples, like old cars,, airplanes, trains, etc.

On to Heidelberg and a long drive up the hill to the Heidelberg Castle and the town of Heidelberg- more later.

      Mosel Valley, Germany

      July 8, 2019 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

The Mosel River runs from France, through Luxembourg and then winds its way 195km from Trier to Koblenz in Germany. Our stay at the Triolago motorhome park, just 15 minutes from Trier, proved to be a good choice for visiting the 'mittelmosel/middle mosel' area and sampling the famous white wines.

The river is a working river with long barges moving goods and people around. The barges are so long and narrow that it seems impossible for them to manouvre but they manage it with ease. We sat and watched the boats while sampling some of the local white wines at a Weingut (wine tasting) bar on the waters edge.

A trip on the bike to the pretty town of Bernkastel-Kues took us along the edge of the river, surrounded by steep hillsides covered in vines, and through small, rural villages, all very tidy and well kept. Bernkastel itself, on the eastern bank, was a feast for the eyes with half-timber, stone and slate buildings at every turn along the cobbled streets. In the market square there still exists the iron handcuffs, to which criminals were attached, on the exterior of the Town Hall dating from 1608. The bridge across the Mosel brings you to Kues and the historic St Nikolaus Hospital complex where you can taste from a list of over 160 local wines in the Vinothek. Unfortunately, as we were on the bike, all we could was admire the bottles!
