Travel day in the Greek Islands

      1. august 2022, Hellas ⋅ ☀️ 88 °F

      Miles: 3.7 Steps: 8538
      Flights stairs: 7

We traveled today! We hung out at our pool after check out and enjoyed a couple last hours of swimming and relaxing. We then took many forms of transportation to get us to the island of Crete!

We walked 30 min (with our packs) to catch a city bus which drove across the island to the port. Crazy drive where we did switchbacks all the way down the side of the caldera to get us to the water.

The port is a chaotic crazy place with ferries coming and going, huge ferries! And hundreds of not thousands of people coming and going. We got there a few hours early so sat at a cafe and had lunch, enjoying the food and people watching.

We eventually boarded the ferry and took off across the Mediterranean for a 2 hour ride. It was beautiful on the deck - warm breeze.

The ferry took us to the city of Heraklion - we somehow walked to the city bus station where we bought tickets to drive us another 2 hours down the island of Crete to Rethymno - where our hotel is! We finally made it in around 10:30pm and we’re grateful for our own room. Going to be here a few days just relaxing by the pool/beach. Can’t wait to do … nothing. 😂

      Nothing but relaxing

      2. august 2022, Hellas ⋅ ☀️ 84 °F

      Miles: 1.0 Steps: 2556
      Flights stairs: 5

We’re in Crete - I booked an all-inclusive hotel on the Mediterranean just to relax at for a few days. We’re doing and seeing nothing … nothing historical, nothing ancient, nothing … just either laying by a pool, or the sand of the Mediterranean, eating or drinking. That’s all that’s on the agenda for a few days. One, we needed as jordan says “a vacation from our vacation”, and two, it’s just so beautiful here we had to stop and enjoy it for a bit.

We spent the day at the pool today, and only walked to the beach in the late afternoon to check it out. Tomorrow hoping to spend the day on the beach.

The hotels not as nice as I’d hoped, but is good enough. Hard to book things online - easy to be “fooled” into thinking you’re getting something better than you are. It’s nice they supply all the food and drinks tho so we literally don’t have to even leave at all. A much needed break from always moving.

      Day on the beach

      3. august 2022, Hellas ⋅ ☀️ 82 °F

      Miles: .86 Steps: 2097
      Flights stairs: 3

Spent the day laying on the beach. Perfect temperature in the water and the air. The surf got way too big eventually (I can attest it was scary - got knocked on my butt a few times) and eventually no one was allowed in the water but still awesome just laying there all day.Les mer

And back to the pool …

      4. august 2022, Hellas ⋅ ☀️ 82 °F

      Miles: .5 Steps: 1140
      Flights stairs: 2

Another gorgeous day at the pool … I think it was the lowest mileage day of the trip so far. Didn’t even break a half a mile. 😂 All rested up tho and ready to move on tomorrow …. ✈️Les mer

      The Minotaur (by Lewis)

      9. september 2022, Hellas ⋅ ☀️ 82 °F

We visited Minos’s palace, but couldn’t find the maze. Visiting inspired me to write this, and I hope this inspires you! The Minotaur is a Greek myth that is half bull, half human. The Minotaur’s name means “the bull of Minos.” Minos was king of Crete when the Minotaur was born. The Minotaur was kept in a maze. It killed all visitors. The Minotaur was slain by Theseus with a sword in the neck. Theseus cut off its head as a souvenir. The Minotaur is a scary creature!Les mer

      Mount Psiloritis on Crete

      12. september 2022, Hellas ⋅ 🌙 72 °F

We’ve had a pretty chill time in Crete, getting into a bit of a rhythm with a bit more home schooling, increased relaxation/down time, realizing we have a bit too much relaxation and need to be more active, and continuing to eat lots of delicious foods. We’ve been staying at an ecovillage/farm in the mountains. While it’s pretty magical in terms of a stunning natural landscape that is incredibly healthy, eco-friendly, delicious and relaxing, we are realizing that we enjoy being able to walk to destinations vs. driving.

A few things struck us about the mountain areas of Crete:

      (1) Edible nature: every tree and plant seem to produce an edible fruit of some sort. Every plant was one of an olive, fig, pomegranate, apple, walnut, orange, mulberry, blackberry, grapes, or prickly pear/cactus. I’m not sure how one could ever go hungry with fruit plants growing out of sewers!

      (2) The roads: we thought the roads in the Dolomites were fun, but they’re nothing compared to the un-barriered, hairpin turns with no shoulder or parts of the asphalt (if there is asphalt) starting to erode down the cliff. We were all really grateful to have had Rob at the wheel to navigate the erratic roads in a manual, gutless rental.

      (3) Google maps: doesn’t always accurately reflect where there are actual roads. We spent about 20 minutes traversing a steep downhill dirt road that quickly turned into a glorified goat path and then disappeared altogether. We then had to find a spot to turn around and head back up this steep, eroding hill. I wish I had pictures, but I was all together a bit too nervous to take any.

      (4) Traditional gender roles: many of the women we met shared that they are expected to do traditional women’s work in addition to working for pay. They often go home midday from work to make food for their husbands who are shepherds and farmers. There does seem to be a mutual respect for both genders’ roles, but even Lewis and Andrew are surprised by the number of gendered comments we have heard on Crete.

      (5) Traditional, hard and beautiful way of life: many of the products we eat and enjoy are made from scratch by hand without modern conveniences. While this way of life is very appealing to us, it’s also very hard. Our favorite server, Aphrodite, shared that she gets her eggs and chickens from her mother, all her vegetables and fruit from her mother-in-law who has a small farm and she and her husband provide all the yogurt and cheese, which she makes by hand, as well as the milk and meat from their sheep and goats. She shared that her 26yo daughter does not want to return to their village as life is too hard. While it does sound like an incredible amount of work to put a meal on the table, it also sounds very rewarding and natural!

      Tag 5

      22. september 2022, Hellas ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

      Tag 8

      26. september 2022, Hellas ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Letzter Tag in Agios Nikolaus.
