      Yogyakarta - cultural center of java

      After the almost ten hour bus drive to Yogyakarta I arrived at Laura’s Backpackers hostel. Went to see the Malioboro Street in the evening (of course it was raining) - so many people in the street were trying to convince me to come to „an extraordinary exhibition“ or an „awesome art gallery“. Luckily I was told that this was going to happen, unfortunately it is very common in Yogya that people are trying to scam you. It is the cultural art center of java, the place where Batik art has its origin and some people take advantage of it. They bring tourists to questionable places where they talk them into buying batik art (or even force them to).

      At the free dinner in my hostel I got to know Denise from Austria, we started talking and she asked me whether I want to join her to visit Borobudur Candi (temple) next day. In the end one of the Indonesian tour guides „Wanwan“ asked us whether we want to book a tour with him to see some more things than only the Borobudur temple on the next day. We convinced also Zoé and Jonas to join us and so we got up at 3:45 am next day to start our tour and to see the sunrise at a view point where you are supposed to see two vulcanos. Unfortunately it was too cloudy to see any of the sunrise 😃 but at least we saw the vulcanos after a while. Went to see the ancient buddhist temple Borobudur, which was build in the 9th century. The temple is designed in a way that you can only go up the temple but not inside and at the moment it is unfortunately not even allowed to go on top of the temple. But still I found it very impressing to see how they built the temple (especially the background information a local tour guide gave us about the diffrent floors of the temple).

      Our next stop was Chicken Church - a building (in a shape of a 🐔) which was originally built for people with diffrent religions to pray together, but it is unfortunately not used for praying and now more of a tourist attraction than a religious building. But we had a nice view (out of the beak of the chicken haha).

      One hour later we arrived at the waterfall we wanted to visit. We were so happy that Wanwan drove us with the car because it was raining sooo much all the way and also when we arrived there. Because of flooding we couldn‘t walk to the waterfall and could only see it from a viewpoint (where you are also supposed to see a vulcano in the background, but it was too cloudy 😞).

      Very hungry, even a little bit cold and to be honest also frustrated we went to a nice restaurant, which had so many variations of mushrooms instead of meat (reminded me of the amazing food at the teacher Training in Thailand 😍). Best thing for me was to try the mushroom Sate with peanut sauce - which is originally from indonesia, but naturally made out of chicken.       Czytaj więcej

      Borobudur

      Es geht heute mit dem Scooter zum Borobudur, dem grösten buddhistischen Tempel in Südostasien.
      Nach einer kurzen Unterweisung durch die Hotelmanagerin machen wir uns vorerst mit zwei Rollern auf den Weg, mit der Absicht unterwegs einen dritten zu finden. Am ersten Ort, wo wir das versuchen, bemerken wir aber, dass wir unseren Sitzflächen-Stauraum nicht mehr öffnen können. Da sind unsere Handys und Portemonnaies sogar vor uns sicher. Da wir nach so ca. 10 Minuten wohl ziemlich verzweifelt aussehen, wendet ein hilfsbereiter Local sein Motorrad im Verkehr um uns zu Hilfe zu kommen. Und beim ersten Versuch öffnet sich das Schloss wie von Zauberhand. Etwas verdutzt bedanken wir uns, und die nächsten Versuche klappen auch bei uns prompt.
      Nach vermutlich 4 Motorradhändlern, findet sich an der Touristrasse ein Motorradverleih, sodass nun jeder mit einem Scooter ausgerüstet ist.
      Auf unserer 90 minütigen Fahrt gehts entlang malerischer Reisfelder, plätschernder Flüsschen und über holzbeplankte Hängebrücken. Und als der fast schon obligate Regen beginnt, werfen wir uns eine Pellerine über und fahren alsbald weiter.
      Am Tempel angekommen, brauchen wir als erstes eine kleine Stärkung, denn so eine Tour hat es in sich. All die Leute, die uns während dem Essen Ramsch anzudrehen versuchen, ignorieren wir mehr oder weniger gekonnt.
      Der Tempel ist in einer grossen Anlage untergebracht, auf der auch eine Schule steht. Und für den Englischunterricht suchen die Schüler Touristen, mit denen sie ein kurzes Interview führen und ein Foto schiessen können. Und für so etwas erklären wir uns selbstverständlich mehr als gerne bereit.
      Leider kann man das Innere des 1200 Jahre alten Tempels wegen der Abnutzung durch Touristen nicht mehr besichtigen. Deshalb können wir nur um den Tempel herum schlendern (was wir sehr andächtig tun). Neben dem Tempel selbst beherbergt der Komplex auch ein Elefantengehege und einen kleinen Hügel mit Aussicht.
      Bevor wir uns auf den Heimweg machen, haben wir noch ein langes Gespräch mit dem sehr freundlichen und redseligen Herrn, der unseren Parkplatz betreut. Wir erfahren, dass er selber oft Touristen bei sich zu Hause aufnimmt und hofft, dass wir bald wieder zurückkehren. Nach solchen Worten fühlen wir uns sehr geehrt.
      Auf der Rückfahrt schlagen wir den Weg zu einem bekannten Wasserfall ein. Dachten wir zumindest, denn die Wege werden immer schmaler, weniger befestigt und schwerer befahrbar. Dies verleitet zur Annahme, dass der Wasserfall wohl doch nicht so touristisch sein kann. Da es mittlerweile ohnehin eindunkelt, machen wir uns dann unverrichteter Dinge wieder auf den Heimweg.       8:30 a.m. - I got the free breakfast in the hostel and kinda planned the day.

      9:30 a.m. - Brian, Robin and I left into the direction of Borobudur.

      10:30 a.m. - On the way was the Grojogang Watu waterfall where we made a little stop for some shot’s with the drone. Afterwards we continued to Borobudur and somehow we endet up in some kind of motorbike gang. All these kids were blocking the streets, screaming and honking.

      11:30 a.m. - Anyways we arrived at Borobudur. Brian tried to get in with a already expired ticket but obviously it didn’t work out. So he waited somewhere else. Robin and I met up with Jakob inside and we got a guide to learn actually something about the history. Luckily we had a good timing because it was almost empty. The guide told us thats because it was Friday so there are no school classes and everyone else is in the mosque for prayer. We learned a lot about the history of the temple, how it was build, restored etc. It was very interesting but to be honest I didn’t understood everything the guide tried to tell us. Furthermore I was melting because all the volcano stones reflected the heat.

      2:30 p.m. - After our tour we met up with Brian again. He went into a local café where he talked to some locals and we joined. Planned was to just stay there for a coffee and a bit of rest and go then to the Chicken Church but unfortunately it started to rain again. So instead we just chilled there, got some nice shots with the great rice field view, tried some coffee cherry wine kind of drink, and got really nice fried tempe. Robin and I booked a cooking class for the early evening but we didn’t wanted to drive 1:30h back in the rain. Apparently we had no choice but the way back was very beautiful and adventurous. We drove a smaller street through the mountains and the further we got back to the center the less got the rain.

      5 p.m. - We were a bit late for the Via Via cooking class but Lala out Chef wasn’t mad. In total we were three people and we cooked two and a half dishes. One dish was a fried tuna with a sweet and sour sauce + rice, the second one was a classic vegetable curry and we also made some caramel tempe. I got all the recipes to cook it at home also except of the caramel tempe. I really enjoyed that we were such a small group and I had a lot if fun + the food was amazing a bit much for three person but we almost ate everything.

      caramel tempe:
      fried garlic, fried shallots, soya ketchup, chili, palm sugar, lime leaf, 1 tl sugar, 2 tl water -> caramel sauce + fried tempe

      8 p.m. - We got back and I took a shower, packed my stuff and had a call with my mom.

      Borobodur

      Leider durften wir in Borobodur nicht auf den Tempel rauf, was ihn einigermaßen unattraktiv gemacht hat, weil die filigranen Reliefs von unten nicht gut erkennbar sind. Das ist gerade jeden Tag anders und man kann im voraus nicht wissen, ob man rauf darf oder nicht. Kombiticket für die beiden Tempel Borobodur und Prambanan ca 40€ pro Person. Das erste Mal, dass uns etwas teuer erschienen ist in dem Urlaub. Ah ja und aus irgendeinem Grund gibt's dort auch ein Elefantenhaus. Czytaj więcej

      De tempel prambanam is de grootste Hindu tempel in Java, tot vandaag zijn ze nog steeds bezig met het opbouwen van de tempel nadat deze was verwoest door een aardbeving in 2006.

      The legend tells the story about Prince Bandung Bondowoso, who fell in love with Princess Rara Jonggrang, the daughter of King Boko. But the princess rejected his proposal of marriage because Bandung Bondowoso had killed King Boko and ruled her kingdom. Bandung Bondowoso insisted on the union, and finally Rara Jonggrang was forced to agree to a union in marriage, but she posed one impossible condition: Bandung must build her a thousand temples in only one night in.

      Beautiful ! We were first in the row at 06.00 hr, to be sure we had a ticket. Since several months they are working with time slots and occupancy per day is very limited. (Only 1200 people are allowed per day)

      Temple Borobudur I

      Wiki: Die kolossale Pyramide befindet sich in Magelang, rund 25 Kilometer nordwestlich von Yogyakarta. Borobudur wurde 1991 von der UNESCO als Weltkulturerbe anerkannt. Er gilt als das bedeutendste Bauwerk des Mahayana-Buddhismus auf Java.
      Gebaut wurde der Stupa vermutlich zwischen 750 und 850 während der Herrschaft der Sailendra-Dynastie. Als sich das Machtzentrum Javas im 10. und 11. Jahrhundert nach Osten verlagerte (vielleicht auch in Verbindung mit dem Ausbruch des Merapi 1006), geriet die Anlage in Vergessenheit und wurde von vulkanischer Asche und wuchernder Vegetation begraben. 1814 wurde sie wiederentdeckt; im Jahr 1835 brachten Europäer sie wieder ans Tageslicht. Ein Restaurierungsprogramm von 1973 bis 1983 brachte große Teile der Anlage wieder zu früherem Glanz.
      Insgesamt neun Stockwerke türmen sich auf der quadratischen Basis von 123 Metern Länge. An den Wänden der vier sich stufenartig verjüngenden Galerien befinden sich Flachreliefs in der Gesamtlänge von über fünf Kilometern, welche das Leben und Wirken Buddhas beschreiben. Darüber liegen drei sich konzentrisch verjüngende Terrassen mit insgesamt 76 Stupas, welche den Hauptstupa von fast 11 Meter Durchmesser umrahmen.
      Was Wiki nicht erwähnt ist, dass Grosteils Europäer von den 500 Buddhas knapp 300 die Köpfe geklaut haben (die ganze Figur wiegt 500 Kilo und war zu schwer). Auch der Goldene Buddha aus der Stupa ganz oben wurde entwendet und verschwand in einer privaten Kollektion.

      Wiki: The colossal pyramid is located in Magelang, around 25 kilometers northwest of Yogyakarta. Borobudur was recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1991. It is considered the most important Mahayana Buddhist building in Java.
      The stupa was probably built between 750 and 850 during the reign of the Sailendra dynasty. When Java's center of power shifted eastward in the 10th and 11th centuries (perhaps in connection with the eruption of Mount Merapi in 1006), the complex fell into oblivion and was buried by volcanic ash and overgrown vegetation. It was rediscovered in 1814; in 1835 Europeans brought them back to light. A restoration program from 1973 to 1983 restored large parts of the complex to its former glory.
      A total of nine floors rise on the square base, which is 123 meters long. On the walls of the four tapering galleries there are bas reliefs with a total length of over five kilometers, which describe the life and work of Buddha. Above it lie three concentrically tapering terraces with a total of 76 stupas, which frame the main stupa, which is almost 11 meters in diameter.
      What Wiki doesn't mention is that also Europeans stole the heads of almost 300 of the 500 Buddhas (the whole figure weighs 500 kilos and was too heavy, that’s why only the head).       Temple Run

      After a quick test drive of my bike and fuel stop last night, I was ready for my first Indonesian road trip and was 60% confident that I wouldn't die. The ride to the first temple was around an hour and a half and I had my ticket booked for 8.30 so I left at 6.30 to give myself some extra time to get there. Thankfully there was a holder for my phone on the handle bars and google maps worked perfectly so I only had to navigate the gizillion bikes and cars on the road but luckily it was a straight enough road with few right turns!

      I arrived at Borobudur Temple and struggled to find the entrance but got in eventually. It was a guided tour up through the 9 levels of this Buddhist temple. The guide was extremely friendly and as there was a large Polish group where another person was translating, we were provided with the information slowly and the translator had lots of questions so it was great for learning a little bit more about Buddhism. At the top level are the stupas (bell-like shrines with Buddhas inside) that the temple is famous for and it was cool exploring in and out of them.

      Afterwards I escaped up the hills for a mountain view lookout and also visited a paddy field for a drink and a rest from the midday sun.

      Next up on the temple safari was Prambanan which was another hour and half ride away. It rained a little on this ride and the big rain drops really feel like hail or bullets hitting you on the bike. My arse was also partially, if not completely numb by the end of the journey; those bikes don't stay comfortable for long!

      Prambanan was a little bit more relaxed compared to Borobudur. It's a Hindu temple and it wasn't a guided tour this time so I was free to explore. I got there around four in the evening so that I could enjoy the sunset there. There was a haze around the temple but the sun was shining through in the background so the grounds had an ethereal feeling. There was no spectacular sunset due to the haze, just encroaching darkness which meant it was time to head back to Yogyakarta to get some food and chill before getting my first night train.       Auf zwei Rädern zum Borobudur

      Nachdem wir uns in den letzten Tagen kaum aus der Stadt bewegt haben, stand heute eine der beiden alten Tempelanlagen aussehalb von Jogja auf dem Programm.
      Da wir keinen Bock auf Busfahren hatten nahmen wir den Roller und fuhren damit zum 1.5h entfernten Tempel Borobudur. Die hinfahrt war dank Goggle unterhaltsamer als gedacht. Erstaundlicherweise sind hier aber fast alle Strassen in einem super Zustand und Schleichwege meist okay. Ausser, wenn man plötzlich über eine provisorische Bambusbrücke muss. 🤣 Allgemein hatten die Einheimischen wohl mehr Spass an uns als wir an der Fahrt, zwei Europäer auf einem Roller sind hier eine Seltenheit.

      Beim Tempel angekommen zahlten wir erst mal rin kleines Vermögen für die Tickets. (Sogar für europäische Messwerte war es teuer). Immerhin können wir kostenlos eine kleine Audio-Guideapp runterladen. Ein paar Minuten später stehen wir (und ganz viele Asiaten mit Schirmen) vor der riesigen Tempelanlage. Sie wurde vor 1200 Jahren erbaut und soll früher mal farbig gewesen sein. Borobudur ist die grösste buddhistische Tempelanlage der Welt. Mit viel Schweiss bezahlen wie für den Aufstieg auf die Pyramide. Da wir ja auch genug bezahlt haben schauen wir uns jedes Level der Pyramide an. (Natürlich im Uhrzeigersinn, wie das die Tradition verlangt) Die Anlage ist sehr eindrucksvoll uns lässt einem sehr klein wirken.
      Nach der Besichtigung informieren wir als einzige Besucher noch kurz im Museum über den Aufbau der Anlage.
      Durch den Feierabendvehrkehr geht es dann zurück nach Hause. Morgen werden wie uns die zweite Tempelanlage im Osten von Jogya anschauen.       Czytaj więcej

      Die größte, zusammenhängende buddhistische Tempelanlage der Welt - der Borobudur-Tempel - war besonders beeindruckend: Eine 2500 Quadratmeter große Anlage erstreckt sich majestätisch in einer eher ländlichen Gegend etwa 25 Kilometer entfernt von Yogyakarta. Sie gehört genau wie der hinduistische Prambanan-Tempel zum UNSECO-Weltkulturerbe, ist allerdings nur mit einem Guide begehbar. Durch unseren Guide konnten wir auch eine Menge über diese alte, religiöse Stätte erfahren. Die Anlage wurde aus Vulkangestein des Vulkans Merapi ganz ohne Zement gebaut, wurde allerdings an einigen Stellen mit im Nachhinein nachgelieferten Gesteinen renoviert. Insgesamt hat der Tempel 9 Etagen, wobei die ersten 7 Etagen die irdische Welt darstellen, und die letzten 2 Etagen die überirdischen Welten. Bis zur 7. Etage befinden sich unzählige Reliefs über Geschichten von Buddhas und Bodhisattvas, sowie von Buddhas Schülern. Außerdem kann man viele Buddha-Statuen mit unterschiedlichen Mudras entdecken. Ursprünglich beherbergte der Tempel ganze 504 Buddhas, welche teilweise jedoch durch Verwitterungen oder Vandalismus über die Zeit hinweg zerstört wurden. Um den zentralen Dom auf der 9. Etage in der Mitte des Tempels, welcher das Nirvana darstellen soll, sind ebenfalls Buddha-Statuen in Stupas verteilt. Diese Buddhas der 8. und 9. Etage zeigen alle das dharmachakra-Mudra, ein Smybol der Lehren des Buddhas (Dharmachakra) oder der Unendlichkeit auf einer metaphysischen Ebene.

      The largest Buddhist temple complex in the world - the Borobudur Temple - was very impressive: a 2500 square metre big complex stretches majestically in a rather rural area around 25 kilometres outside of Yogyakarta. Just like the Hinduistic Prambanan Temple, it is a UNSECO World Heritage Site, but can only be visited together with a guide. Our guide also told us a lot about this ancient religious site. The complex was built from volcanic rock from the Merapi volcano without any cement, but was renovated in some places with stone that was brought there later. The temple has a total of 9 floors, with the first 7 floors representing the earthly world and the last 2 floors the supernatural worlds. Up to the 7th floor, there are many reliefs depicting stories of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, as well as Buddha's disciples. You can also discover many Buddha statues with different mudras. The temple originally housed a total of 504 Buddhas, some of which have been destroyed over time due to weathering or vandalism. Buddha statues in stupas are also scattered around the central dome on the 9th floor in the centre of the temple, which is supposed to represent Nirvana. These Buddhas on the 8th and 9th floors all show the dharmachakra mudra, a smybol of the Buddha's teachings (dharmachakra) or infinity on a metaphysical level.       Czytaj więcej
