    Ein Zwischenstopp...

    April 24, 2019 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Read more

    Monteriggoni, vissza a kozepkorba

    July 14, 2017 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

Day 6: Florence & Tuscan wine

    October 14, 2017 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

What a wonderfull beginning, the view, in this city and the awesome breakfast in the sun on the street. Better even tht we stayed one more night here, ideal since you can leave your stuff and have no deadlines at all. Well we had this wine tour booked and planned today. So after seeing a few wonderufll sights in Florence we moved on the the train station where the bus would be leaving for a few stops in Tuscany. The stops would include tasting some wines, something to look out for since it could be tasty ;-). We visited 2 wineries on beautifull farms and we tasted (I would say countless) but I guess 4 wines every time. Every taste was almost a glass half full, that became very gezellig (funny also). I am a very shy person normally :p and after the first winery there were no boundaries anymore ;-). The gate was from the dam :p and the group from the bus picked it up equally. So with this mood we finished the tour and went for diner. Needless to say this was a lot of fun walking back to the centre and on the same pace as those cool Canadian's. When we found the restaurant and ordered more wine the waiter already felt the mood and helped out wonderfull. It could be the wine but I ate the best Pizza ever that night. It was just perfect the 'Il Duomo' and with that this day couldn't be better thanks to Mariska since this was her idea... off course.... it was the wine.Read more

Monteriggioni - Day Tour from Florence

    September 25, 2018 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

Today we booked into an all day tour of the Tuscan region including a visit to Monteriggioni, San Gimignano, Siena and wine tasting in the Chianti area. First stop was the walled fortress of Monteriggioni.

Monteriggioni is one of the most important walled castles in the territory and has an incredibly well preserved intact structure, almost as if time had never passed. The castle was built by the Sienese between 1213 and 1219 for defensive purposes and its position on the hill overlooking the area made it the perfect lookout for any armies approaching Siena.

The current structure of the village is essentially the original one, with the only changes occurring in the 16th century when the towers were lowered. The intact fortified wall consists of 14 towers along which the guards used to walk and patrol the walls, and two gates, one called the Franca or Romea Gate which faces Rome and the other known as the Florentine Gate since it faces Florence.

Due to arriving at Monteriggioni so early a lot of the little shops and cafes weren't open and the town was still fairly empty, which was a pity because it is the type of place you want to spend some time wandering in and out of stores, enjoying a coffee sat in the courtyard in the morning sun, soaking up the feel of the place. Unfortunately we only had half an hour at this stop so we had a quick wander around. We did manage to find enough time to pop into a jewellery shop and purchase a beautiful ring for my birthday. It is lovely having a one of a kind piece made by a local Italian lady.

We loved Monteriggioni and just wished we had more time to enjoy this beautiful Italian town. It is on our list for our next visit to Italy.

I forgot to take a photo, again

    March 24, 2017 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Bar dell'orso (bar of the bear). Yummy food. Heather had pasta with radicchio and Gorgonzola. Gordon opted for comfort lasagna. Tirimisu and ricotta torte slathered with chocolate for dolci.

    September 18, 2017 in Italy ⋅ 🌧 14 °C
