      Fontana di Trevi

      February 9, 2020 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

      Rome at Night

      October 20, 2019 in Italy ⋅ 🌙 66 °F

I think I love Rome because it reminds me of the city feeling of NYC but with a million times more rich history and culture! Fighting our way through hundreds of people to see the Trevi Fountain was very NYC-esque but it was worth it to see the majesty that is artwork, especially at night. Hadn't we just watched the Da Vinci Code before we left? Remember how the fortress by the Vatican was featured in that movie? Now we get to say we were there - even if only from the outside!Read more

      Glad midsommar!

      June 24, 2022 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

      Trevi Fountain, Rome

      September 5, 2022 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

While Brad’s favourite site in Rome is the Pantheon, mine has to be the Trevi Fountain. While I usually prefer the lesser known “tourist” sites, for some reason the Trevi Fountain always draws me back. I love how the light plays on the stone and marble, the gorgeous turquoise waters, the colourful buildings nearby and the amazing artistry of the sculptors. It wins me over every time I see it.

And you definitely can’t visit Rome without taking the obligatory selfie in front of it.

      Fontana di Trevi

      September 21, 2022 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

The Trevi Fountain is an 18th-century fountain in the Trevi district in Rome, Italy, designed by Italian architect Nicola Salvi and completed by Giuseppe Pannini and several others. Standing 26.3 metres (86 ft) high and 49.15 metres (161.3 ft) wide,[1] it is the largest Baroque fountain in the city and one of the most famous fountains in the world.

Coins are purportedly meant to be thrown using the right hand over left shoulder.
An estimated 3,000 euros are thrown into the fountain each day. In 2016, an estimated €1.4 million was thrown into the fountain. The money has been used to subsidize a supermarket for Rome's needy, however, there are regular attempts to steal coins from the fountain, even though it is illegal to do so.

      Kurze Planänderung…

      October 23, 2022 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Eig.

      Day 2 in Rome

      December 20, 2022 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

After a wonderful couple of hours in and around the Colosseum and Palatine Hill, we picnicked in the sunshine and made it through the bonkers traffic to a cafe on Piazza Venezia. We then climbed up the staircases of the incredibly impressive Tomb of the Unknown Soldier for awesome views. My vertigo kicked in a bit and Andy and the boys had to go up the glass lift to the highest lookout without me. Thomas refused to contemplate any further movement without ice cream, but suddenly gelato shops were hard to find! We were almost at the Trevi fountain before we discovered one... and then of course there were dozens. We got a bit lost on the way home, via some souvenir shopping.Read more

      Rome

      October 9, 2022 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

Sadly our amazing five weeks in Italy is at its end and we have returned to Rome for one final day before our flight home. What we didn't expect returning to Rome was how busy it was going to be. We are now fully out of "tourist" season and yet Rome is buzzing, flooded with tourist enjoying this historic city.

We chose to spend our last night staying near the Trevi Fountain, thinking it would be less crowded than when we arrived. We were wrong, very wrong. However, we did make the most of our last night in the country my heart calls home. We had our last Italian gelato, our last delicious Italian meal, and our last look and photo at the places we love.

This trip has been amazing, exploring new places and revisiting some of our favourites. It has been relaxing, awe inspiring, breath-taking, and so much more. Italy is where I feel most at home, where I can just breathe, where my heart is. Io amo l’Italia!

      Rome to Home

      October 10, 2022 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

And in a blink of an eye our glorious five weeks in Italy is over and we sadly start the long journey home. This is when I get really jealous of the lucky people who live a hop, skip and a jump away from Italy, the lucky people who don’t have to endure a 24+ hour flight to visit the place they love most in the world. It is obviously worth it as we will be coming back.

      Here is our trip wrap-up:

We visited 14 Italian towns, visited 21 churches, climbed 3 towers and saw so many historic sites. We walked almost 300 000 steps, 200km and 316 flights of stairs.

Most overwhelming cathedral – Basilica of San Francesco d’ Assisi
Town with sites we loved the most – Parma – The Baptistry and Monastery
Towns we want to revisit - Assissi, Pienza

We tried 44 different gelato flavours
Most expensive gelato - Siena but it was delicious
Favourite flavour - Amarena (black cherry) and we had a lot of these
Weirdest flavour - Zucca (pumpkin) We tried this on our food tour and were not fans

We ate way too many pastas and types to count
      Best food – Modena
Worse food – Como (also had some amazing food here too. Just the location of our worse meal for the whole trip - we know we shouldn't eat in the tourist places - lesson learnt)
Best complimemtary snack with drinks - San Gimignano
Most interesting food presentation - Meat "laundry" in Pienza
Fanciest meal - Orvieto at Labirinto di Adriano, a fabulous restaurant with a labyrinth of underground tunnels and caves, and also amazing food
Things to remember - piazza with four toppings is a topping in each quarter. Not four toppings together
      Favourite drink - Hugo

Lowlights – bad weather in Como – changed all our plans of being on the water every day

Highlights – catching up with family in Rome and Milan and seeing Bruno again in San Gimignano

      Prettiest town – Pienza
      Most colourful town – Modena
      Most relaxing town – Arezzo
Favourite town - impossible to pick one as we love all Italy has to offer

Until next time, Grazie Italia, grazie mille. Hai il mio cuore!
